60.0.003 for 5800 XM RM-428

Dear Nokia,
It's been MONTHS since the 60.0.003 firmware update was released for the RM-356. Yes, months!
Will the update come for RM-428? I'd love to have it in this lifetime. Else,  Android is calling me.
Thanks

Me too. I have an RM-428 with software 51.2.002 from September 2010. I bought it unlocked while living in the US,  and now live in Europe.
Nokia's website crows loudly and proudly about it.
Latest software release for Nokia 5800 Xpress Music is 60.0.003
To check for updates, on your phone, select Menu -> Applications -> SW Update
But when I do that, my phone shows me that there are updates available for Mail for Exchange, Nokia Messaging and Facebook, nothing for the main software.
When my two kids wanted something than the old Nokia 3310 or 1110 that I had lent them, I got them Android phones. I loved my 5800 when I got it, and for most of the time it is still a good phone. Nokia had a technologial lead over the other companies, but really dropped the ball after 2009.

  • 5800 (NAM RM-428) v40 available via NSU

Saw the other thread which indicated that v40 was available via FOTA.
Now v40.2.005 for 5800 XpressMusic (NAM RM-428, product code: 0577454) is available via NSU as well.  132MB download went quite smoothly.
Firmware is dated Mar 17, 2010 & I'm not sure when it became available via NSU...I haven't been checking lately.  Even though I've registered with Nokia for updates, I never actually get email when an update is available.  I do get their occasional "newsletter" email though.

    Howdy.
Phones in US apparently don't get shipped with a server configuration for software updates, which is weird.  Call Nokia support to see if they will give you the configuration.  I tried the info that's posted on these forums (search for server update).
What I do is use NSU, which stands for Nokia Software Updater, a package you have to install on your PC.  Do you have either PC Suite or Ovi Suite installed?  If so you NSU should have been installed.  Connect your phone and run that.  Heed the warnings about making backups before updating!
    [Update]
Saw in another thread that you may be using a Mac? In that case I don't know about NSU availability on the Mac.  In case you're in an area where there's a Nokia Care Center (I believe that's only NYC and Chicago in the US, though I haven't checked lately), then you could go to them & have it updated, or find a PC where you can install NSU for updating your phone.
You might want to put your phone model and firmware in your signature so people can tell which 5800 you've got.  Also if it's T-mobile branded, you may want to check with them about the update.  My phone was unbranded and v40 is available via NSU.  I'm now looking forward to v50.

Ovi Store is what you want, it's Nokia's answer to the iPhone app store.
It's opening very very soon, some time this month apparently. You can register to get updates on when it will open at the Ovi Store site:

  • Firmware for 5800

Hey guys is it true that a new 20v firmware is availbale for 5800??i tried both OTA and pc search for new FW but it says no updates.
could you tell me how to udpate?

It is true but it isn't available for all countries and product codes yet.
It can take up to a month before it's available everywhere.
All you can do is be patient and keep checking OTA and using the nokia software updater.  It may appear on one and not the other.
No one can tell you when it will be available for your specific product code.

  • Video converting for 5800

What could I use to convert rmvb files for use on my 5800? i'm only using the default player and the real player installed on the phone when bought. The real player on the phone could only play the audio but not the video of the file. If possible please suggest freeware. Thanks.
If you find my post helpful please click the green star on the left under the avatar. Thanks.

karled, I also found it is rather simple to use the mass storage mode though I am now quite satisfied while the phone is in PC Suit mode, the data transfer processing is much faster compared to 3-4 year's ago version of PC S.
As loco recommened the free/shareware converter programs, I would also like to mention not to use the H.264/AVC codec to convert video files for 5800  XM as it is currently having issues with series 60 5th edition phones. Also, there are some bitrate limitations for the devices, once I used (unnecesarily) huge bitrate to convert to MPEG4/AVC, but it would result in "only audio" playing.

  • Availability of V60.0.0.3 Firmware for 5800 Xpress...

I have a 5800 XpressMusic Phone with Prodcode: RM356 , i live in Singapore. It seems to me that the V60.0.0.3 Firmware for 5800 XpressMusic is not available either FOTA or OVI SUITE or NOKIA SOFTWARE UPDATER or NOKIA SUITE. I have visited all Nokia sites and it seems that all the Nokia sites, even the europe one mention v52.0.0.7 as the latest firmware version for 5800? This is obviously not true, it seems that Nokia is not updating their database? And has anyone with my prod code be able to obtain an update?
    From a sad guy...

1st we have to thank Nokia, cos they've released major update for their 3 years old device. But still i haven't got previous update (v52). Hope will get this one at least. (my phone is german country variant blue)
    Glad to help

  • 21.0.101 is out for 5800

This firmware, 21.0.101 is out for 5800 but only minor changes and ONLY available for HK after 1 week after release!!!!

Updates are released either by NSU or via FOTA, or both. There's no rule that says that if it's released by one system then it'll also be available via the other. The update from V11 to V20, for example, was available only through NSU.
The 5800 has UDP so your data etc. should be preserved. You should still do a backup just in case. Belt and braces...

  • Windows Live Messenger for 5800 problem

    Hi,
I installed the new FW 40.0.005 for Nokia 5800 and then Windows Live Mesenger and Hotmail disappeared.
I went to Ovi Store to download it again (Ovi Store) but now it says "Sorry, this item is not available for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.Browse ...
    Any idea?

FWIW, when I searched on store.ovi.com for Windows Live Messenger, there were no results.  Maybe it's just been pulled back for an update to be compatible with the new firmware?
It doesn't even show in "My Stuff" download history...maybe it wasn't isntalled through OVI but App Updates instead?  Try that...
You may also want to try the home site from your 5800: http://mobile.live.com

  • Suitable external monitor for 5800?

Love the SatNav on my 5800, but I'm getting old and the screen is too small.  This isn't helped by the fact that I'm slightly colour blind and the colour are sometimes less than helpful.
Anyway, the question is does anyone use this phone with an external screen via the video out and if so, does it work OK and/or can you recommend a monitor?  I was hoping to find a small (5inch?) monitor which was high enough resolution to use with the phone but not that big that it gets in the way.

The phone should work ok as it supports TV out but perhaps now may be the time to invest in a new phone instead? It's difficult to recommend a specific monitor as we don't know what's available in your country.
Nokia's Lumia range features phones with 4.0, 4.3, 4.5 and 4.7" screens and all have great sat nav on them. Also due to the increased resolutions of the screens they are very easy to see. The Lumia range is also very easy to use and features a high contrast mode for those that have difficulty with colours.

  • Best view for Video for 5800

Kindly let me know in which resolution should i convert video for Nokia 5800 so that it can be viewed perfectly.
    e.g.: 320 x 240, 320 x 480, 320 x 200, 240 x 180.
Also audio quality in what Kbps ? shouls i keep while converting.
I had converted 1 video it seems video is stretch.

The 5800 records video in VGA 640x480, so that ought to be your benchmark. The 5800 screen is 640x360 pixels in landscape mode, effectively therefore widescreen, but when I tested this model I had no issue watching videos that I had converted to MP4 using WinAVI so the screen should not be causing the distortion.
I'm not a video expert and I have my software on standard settings so I can't offer much further advice on conversion configuration.

  • No T-Mobile 3g connection for 5800 US version....?

I recently purchased a nokia 5800 US version. It is 3g+ capable, but does not work with the Tmob 3g network. The frequency for Tmob is 2100 or 1700. Is there a way to fix this issue? It works fine with AT*T thought. I am disappointed in light of this matter.

If T-Mobile is 1700 or 2100 and the US version of the 5800 is 950/1900/2100, you will only get 3G coverage in areas where T-Mobile is broadcasting on the 2100MHz band.
Thank T-Mobile for not using a standard frequency in your country!
If you want full 3G coverage then you have to use a phone supplied by T-Mobile because they have them manufactured specifically to work on their oddball frequency bands.
