60 fps / 30 fps frustrations
just bought a canon t2i and it takes video in the following formats;
1080p 30fps
1080p 24fps
720p 60 fps
640 - who uses standard def anyway
all video files are h.264
If I were to shoot something at 720p 60fps what is the best way to make it 30fps without loosing quality, and give it the slow mo effect (10 sec. clip becomes 20 sec.) not just deleting every other frame as I understand some converting does. or even better would be converting it to 24fps
part two is if I were to make a short film and shoot it at 1080p 24fps, and I wanted to do a slow mo clip within the short (shoot it at 720 60fps) to add some drama to a chase. what would be the best way to integrate these two different resolutions in one timeline.

Did what you said, at first glance the quality didnt seem to be compromised which was great. but the exported file didnt have that "high speed camera" look to it. in fact the new .mov file was 10 frames shorter than the original. Im looking for it to double in length... right? Any thoughts?

S16 24fps - DVCPro HD 25 fps - 24 fps editing and output?
I'm new on this forum so "hi everybody!"
We're about to shoot a short feature on S16 film and I'm in charge of postproduction.
Last feature we made was shot on S16@24 fps -> HDCam SR telecine -> Betacam SP -> 24fps edit on Avid Film Composer -> EDL -> HDCam SR conformation, color grading and titling -> 35mm shoot.
The thing was, finding for free a HDcam SR deck and an Avid for conformation, color grading, titling etc... was really painful.
So now that we have less money than last time and that HD technologies evolved, I'm considering DVCPro HD instead of HDCam SR.
If the movie is good enough, we may get more money to go back to film on a 35mm print but nothing's sure right now. If the film isn't good enough, we'll stay in DVD/BluRay world.
The big question is "24 fps or 25 fps shooting?" (24 being the standard for film and BluRay/HD-DVD (ok, HD-DVDead) but can be an issue in my post production process)
I know for I can only make 25 fps DVCPro HD tapes in my Pal world (talking "1 film frame for 1 TC frame").
I know I can transfer 25 fps DV on FCP and edit everything at 24 fps with Cinema Tools.
But can I transfer 25 fps DVCPro HD to FCP with Cinema Tools (online editing), edit them at 24 fps and output a "BluRay quality" 24 fps video file? (for the 35mm shooting part I'm not affraid as I'll need TGA/Tiff frame sequences so one frame is one frame, there's no footage speed or anything involved)
I'll need a good 24 fps video file for the audio post part...
The goal is to stay in the digital domain after the telecine, and never use the original negative again (juste like we did for the last short feature we made). So no keycodes/flex or anything.
I know DVCPro HD is not as good as HDCam SR or even an original negative cut scan, but we won't have enough money for that and I was pretty impressed by the DVCPro HD->35mm footage I've seen so far.

I just discover that I have a movie made in 25 FPS (960x540) with a source 30FPS (640x580).

What can I do to fix with minimum damage?
It seems that this sony cameras and everything today is made in NTSC. Will never again touch the iMovie config

Message was edited by: Pedro SantosYou need to verify how iMovie changed frame rate from 25 to 30 in the first place. Most likely it just did a frame duplicate at regular intervals. This would explain why you experience slight freezing.
Easiest is to single step through your movie using either MPEGStreamClip (free) or Quicktime Pro. Just note the pattern for the frame duplication and then go back to JES Deinterlacer and check the "skip frames" box in the input settings. Adjust the interval and try again.

HD Scaling to 960x540@30 fps or 1280x720@24 fps?
Wondering what the best way is to get source material (1080i or 720p, 60 fps) onto the ATV with the least quality degredation, two target file options being 960x540@30 fps and 1280x720@24 fps. Based on a little bit of fooling around, seems like former maybe looks the best (my display a large 1080p), latter has better resolution, but picture is a little jumpy, presumably from the reverse 3:2 pulldown that I suppose is happening. I am working with source material from EyeTV, if anyone thinks that makes a difference. And actually, exporting from EyeTV to 24fps might give a smoother result than exporting at 60 fps and doing the 24fps conversion with Quicktime. Not a lot of good information on this stuff out there, which I find surprising. Maybe an opportunity for someone!
Changing frame rate wouldn't be something I would do, but I have compared 720p and 540p at 25 fps, 25 fps is our native frame rate in PAL land and unlike 30 fps is accepted by the tv at 720p.
See my comparisons.
I suspect the fact that 540p is exactly half the vertical resolution has a great deal to do with things, but any difference there is, isn't worth the additional work of applying manual settings in my opinion, indeed I'm not so sure the slight difference is in favour of 720p anyway. -

Hello, I'm having a lot of problems with my cpu temperature being high especially when gaming and this results in getting intermittent FPS drops when gaming. My fps when gaming drops to about 10fps (this doesn't necessarily happen when I'm in a particular FPS intensive condition either, could happen when I'm just walking around in the world). I've noticed my CPU temperature is close to 90 degrees when this occurs (I realize it's due to the core temperature being too high). It shouldn't matter what game since I should not get these FPS problems with a laptop like this but the game I play is a MMORPG called Rift.
After playing Rift for about 1 hour and a half mainly in pvp battlegrounds (15 players per team in the battleground so a total of 30 players), my core temp for my cpu reach the high 80 degrees and I’ve received 4-5 massive fps drops while playing during this time. I was able to screenshot my FPS during the FPS drops and I obtained a few screenshots while playing in game. See screenshots below.
NOTE1: CPU core Temperature is shown in the upper right of the screenshots, the running processes from the task manager is also shown in most of these screenshots.
NOTE2: I play with the native resolution of my laptop 1920 x 1080. I normally play windowed full screen but I include the CPU core temperatures & Task Manager so it wasn't window full screen. Also, I did not have the Turbo and the Nvidia Overclock Tool activated but I've tried both in the past and have not noticed a noticeable difference in my FPS drops while using them. (I also get FPS drops while using the Turbo and Nvidia Overclock Tool).
NOTE3: I play the game with medium settings to try to alleviate this FPS problem but I've had FPS problems still happens even in low settings.
After restarting my computer my idle temperature on all my 4 cores according to core temperature sits around 45 degrees (fluctuation + / - 2 to 3 degrees) with practically no processes running (close to 100k memory in the task manager processes).
When loading up Rift and being IDLE in town my cpu temperature fluctuates between 50 and 61 degrees. CPU usage in task manager fluctuates between 10-16%.
My Normal FPS in a combat environment playing Rift (fluctuates a little obviously but it's usually in the 25 FPS range), FPS can be seen on the bottom right of the Rift client (performance area)

I also took a Screenshot of my core temp about an hour after I stopped playing, My CPU temperature was constantly fluctuating between the low 60's to high 70's when my computer only had a few processes running.
I've looked around for a solution for this problem but I can't seem to find one. I haven't physically opened my laptop to check if there's an issue inside but I've only started having this FPS problem since about 2 months. I had no FPS problems until recently.
Not sure if it matters or not but my NVIDA driver version is 296.10. I've tried reverting to the previous driver to see if this latest driver update was the problem but it didn't change anything. Other things I've tried is changing some settings in the NVIDIA control pannel but this has not worked either. I've even tried playing my game on the lowest settings and still had intermittent FPS drops. I've browsed through the forums and some people have suggested flashing the BIOS but I'm a bit skeptical to do that. I also attempted to call MSI customer support and left a message but they have not returned my call yet. Anyone got any suggestions to fix this problem?The simple solution is to open the bottom and blow out the air through the center of the fan with canned air. The vents arent plugged but the fan itself probably looks like a fuzzy mop. Shoudl fix your problem and will not void your warranty.
The ideal solution is to pop the heatsyncs of the CPU and GPU, replace whatever crap their using with artic silver and appreciate a refined machine. Not only will you not have overheats but your machine will use its fan less and thus be quieter. This WILL void your warranty... but its worth it. Just dont do it unless you are savy.
Other then that. Lifting the laptop off the ground is ESSENTIAL. Look at the bottom. It has vents. Ask yourself.. "Self.. what could these vents possibly be for?" Self will hopefully reply "Well Self, I would say they are there for cooling." "SO self these vents have a purpose???" "Yes, self, they do. Their purpose is cooling and airflow" "Well then why do we not have airspace allowing air to actually get into these vents?" "Because self.. we like it flat.... Like a tire thats soon to be on fire..." Hopefully after that your enlightened self will go get a stand. If you want the lowest profile you can get you need a thin cooler system, if you dont care about that just buy a stand that permits airspace and flow. I mean your running an advanced gaming rig. In a normal box these components may have 4+ fans... Your laptop has one. Help it out.
The good news is perhaps cooking your cpu will have a burn in effect and make it clock to higher speeds... However I doubt it. Chances are you are cooking everything from said chip to your HDs and you should stop, because that MIGHT void your warranty. -
Error adding fps controller filter

The encoder is working fine untill I enable the sound then I get the above error.
I have tried two sound cards but the error remains.
It seems a strange error as fps I presume is frames per second what has that to do with sound.

The audio card is a dell sound blaster ct5807 / 0088 gf pci
My computer uses a amd athlon xp2600 1.92ghz with 512mb ram

Reducing fps raising the kbps?!
hi all,
i'm using the fmlecmd.exe file also fmle 3.2 windows version (tried 3.1 too) to publish my video from a windows 7 os.
the video source is a MediaLooks video mixer, which use a Panasonic DV camera as a source (camera -> mixer -> fmle)
currently the mixer output the video at 25 fps, but in the fmle there are more choices.
now setting the fmle to 150kbps at 25 fps creates (measured by netlimier or perfmon) a 20000 Bps stream (more or less 150kbps)
setting the fmle to 150kbps at 15 fps creates a 32 kBps stream (more or less 250kbps)
setting the fmle to 150kbps at 30 fps or higher make the stream just a little lower at 19.5 kBps.
setting the mixer to output the video at 15 fps will make the fmle :
set at 150kbps and 15 fps to publish at 20000 Bps (~155kbps)
set at 150kbps and 25 fps to bpush at 19,500 Bps (~150kbps)
set at 150kbps and 10 fps to publish at 28000 Bps (~215kbps)
in simple calculation when the fps is lower the published video uses a <setted birate> / <target fps> * <origin fps> instead of (in my understanding) using the same bitrate and sending less frames (so the quality will be better)
from my understanding thats an unexpected result.
i read here in some other discussion that the fmle doesn't really know to change the source (which is the mixer here) fps, is that true? even so why is the bitrate going up when lowering the fps?
Any help is appreciated!I would recommend going to 15 if you are going to play with frame rate.
If you want to know how data rate effects the size
double-click the setting for your movie
look at the inspector
Under the summary tab compressor show you how big the file size will be at _ data rate etc.
Changing the data rate will be reflected here.
When a client doesn't want a file over 15mb I use this tool to know and understand how data rate and other settings effect the overall file. This works for h.264 but may not be the same for every setting. -
I have a kodak easyshare camera and when I put the videos from my camera on my computer it goes to MOV format. When quicktime is trying to play the video it plays very slow and choppy. ANd you really can't watchit that way. I don't know how to fix this. My camera records in HD, i don't know if that makes a difference. How do I play my videos on quicktime? Or how do I make it so I can play it on something else? Media player does not recognize the MOV format.
I'm having a similar problem on a PowerBook. I noticed the problem after downloading the QT security update. After experiencing the problem, I opened the same .mov files in RealPlayer and did not experience the same problem. It appears to me that QT is not playing the files at the proper FPS rate. Frustrating.

In iLife08 what is best setting to convert avi 720 and digital video 1080i
What is the bottom line for best quality for 720 p TV.
1.) My import is digital video 1080i to i Movie 08 (full quality)
What should I use for sharing on AppleTV
- the preset Large (which is 960x 540)
- or some custom setting 25 fps at 1220x 720? ( H.264 display dimensions at 24/25 fps is 720p (1280x720) ) - or what should the setting be??
2.) Have Windows avi older 720 *480 video, what is best setting to convert this for Apple TV? The 640 setting on QuickTime premium is not very good
Thank you so much. PeterYour best option if you are using NTSC footage in imovie is the export to/movie large (960 x 540) at 30 fps, the resolution won't go any higher and still work on the tv. Don't even think about changing the framerate to 24/25 fps, even though you'll be able to export to 720p (1280 x720) changing the framerate will make your video jerky.
If you are using PAL then yes you could export to 720p (even though the specs say 24 fps, 25 fps does in fact work as well), you could try a few tests yourself but I've already done them and IMHO there is so little difference between 960 x 540 and 1280 x 720 that it isn't worth messing about setting up and trying several manual exports to get the best results when you can click one button and be done.
So far a AVI conversion is concerned, I'd try mpegstreamclip, but saying that I can't really be sure. AVI is a container not a codec and I would need to know what codec is actually used inside the container to answer your question properly (Quicktime may tell you though). The problem with AVI is that it is simply so old (even microsoft abandoned it over 10 years ago), unfortunately in a small number of cases some of the codecs that were used in AVI are simply no longer able to be converted. Probably not so likely but at least you are warned. -
Spry Collapsible Panel problem when previewing in web browser
Hello.
I have inserted a spry collapsible panel into my website, made ZERO adjustments to any of the scripting or even css styling, and previewed the panel in my Safari browser. It does not seem to be working correctly. I've attached a couple of images showing what the panel looks like in the browser. My site is not published yet, so I cannot give out the url.
Is something wrong with the js file? I tried the panel earlier on a different site on the same computer and it was working fine.
the "Tab" menu text does not fit inside the grey box. Everything collapses fine, however, the gray box is too thin for the text. I've tried adjusting it in the CSS sheet, but it doesn't seem to change anything.
This is the panel in the collapsed state. It looks bad. I know it's not supposed to work like this.
When I preview the site in "live view" everything works fine...

That is good, that means that I have a local copy of the scripting and css files eliminating the need to attach the code to a post.

The fact that it works on a different site means that something is correct. My assumption is that the scripting and css files are doing their job correctly and to answer your question regarding the js file, no.
Having eliminated the Spry original JavaScript and CSS files as being the culprits, there must be a problem with the rest of the site, incorrect HTML, other interfering JavaScript or CSS.
I can keep guessing, but only those persons that are privy to your code can give you any positive input. Please find a way to upload your files so that we can see the code in context.
To this end, screen captures do not assist in solving the problem, they only add to others' amusement at seeing the problem.

Problems with Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder 3.1
Hello I use a version of Adobe Flash Media Encoder (3.1)
Recently doing a recording, we had the following problem.
After the recording lasted for 1 hour at 1:30 minutes, the generated video produced only 30 minutes!
Checking the video appears in the log as complete and the right length, but the final video has only 30 minutes.
Can someone help us?

Did you ever get this to work? I have been using, with a qualified degree of success, taking the HDMI output from a Canon Vixia HV30, to an AverMedia Game Boradcaster C127 to FMLE.
The qualification is: When the card is installed on an ITX board (GigaByte Z-77), in the single PCI-e slot, yes. In fact, I'm using it weekly now on my show.
Now, if I put the same card on an Asus Z77 Maxiumus Gene board, with or without an installed video card (GTX 660), and regardless of the positioning of the C127 in the first long PCI-e slot and the GTX 660 in the next one over, or pin the PCI-4 slot, I get "No Signal AverMedia" on the screen. Then I put it back on the ITX board (I5-2300 on there and 8GB RAM, using HDMI or DVI vidoe for the local monitor), the card then works properly.
I made sure I had the DirectShow codecs installed...and it didn't work on the larger board (plan was to be able to handle two capture cards like this in one "box" and still have a GPU in the main slot to help processing.

the graphic rendering thread DOESN'T sleep.
Here's my problem. I have a bad trade off. In fullscreen exclusive mode my animation runs <30 fps and jerks when rendering. i.e. stop and go movement (not flickering/jittering just hesitant motion) when the animation is running. I solved this problem by raising the thread priority of the rendering (7-8). . . this resulted in latency/no activity for my input events both key and mouse. For instance closing the program alt-f4 will arbitrarily fail or be successful when the thread priority is raised above 6.
How does one accomplish a >30 fps and Instant event handling simultaneously in Fullscreen Exclusive Mode?
Is there a way to raise thread priority for event handling?
Ultimately I want to be able to perform my animations and handle key and mouse input events without having a visible 'hiccups' on the screen.

I solved some of the problem after posting this thread. . . .
I inserted a thread.sleep(1) and my alt-f4 operation worked unhindered with the elevated thread priority.
I haven't tested it with mouse event or any other key event but at the moment it looks I may have solved the problem.
If so, my next question will be is there a way to reduce the amount of cpu power needed to run the program.
I'm afraid that the other classes that I'm adding will actually become even more process consuming than the actually rendering thread.

Quicktime will not allow playback of .mov files (format DVCPRO HD)
hi
i'm unable to play .mov files with quicktime application. i am using mac 10.4.11 and have the latest version of quicktime 7.4.5.
when i click the files the screen shows only white, and sometimes only audio, no images.
i am unsure if upgrading to quicktime pro would solve this, or if i need to download additional plug ins to support .mov playback.
i have opened to the movie inspector page and it does not tell me what plug in is needed - it lists the source, format, fps, playing fps (when available), data size, data rate, current time, duration and normal size.
how do i find which plug in i need?
thanks for hopefully helping. saraI actually found a link to download the missing components that you listed. i installed the package and it now shows under hard drive / library / quicktime but the HD files will still not play in Quicktime.
could this be because i do not have FCP?
I do not need to edit with the clips - merely to be able to playback to review.

I have a question for you video compression gurus out there: I am living in Norway, and we always make video in 25 fps (PAL) or 25 fps/50 fps (HD). I have created several animations with the excellent software ArtMaticPro (from U&I Software), and I have chosen the format 1280x720 25 fps with no compression (Animation). - And here is my question: When I compress these animations with either Compressor, QuickTimePro or VisualHUB to MPEG4 H.264 25 fps, some of the animations are stuttering. If I open the compressed MPEG4 file in QuickTime and use the cursor to move one frame ahead at a time, I can see that the same image has been used in two continuos frames a few places. When I play back the H.264 file on the AppleTV, this freezing effect is very visible and of course irritating! I have to mention that I have set the max datastream below 5 mbps (as is required), and there is absolutely no timecompression used.
In Apple's podasttechspecs it is stated that the format for the AppleTV should be 960x540 and 30 fps when the source video is 1280x720 and 30 fps. There is no specs for my source video (1280x720 25 fps). - What should I choose? 960x540 and 25 fps? Someone suggested that I should keep the frame rate no higher than 24 fps, but I don't understand this argument.
What I am really looking for, is a professional guide that I can use in order to get the most out of the source material (1280x720 25 fps Animation) when converting to HD and the AppleTV.

However, the problem must be in the conversion process. My problem goes a little deeper, because I need to convert my animations videos before I import them into FinalCutPro6. FCP6 is not able to play back video in Animation (no compression). Most them are not even visible in FCP6 (only black image in both Browser and Canvas). However, if I play them back in QuickTimePro, they play perfectly for three-four seconds, then the data rate is obviously too big for my MacBookPro 2.33 Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 Gbyte RAM, and the image will freeze. - I am looking for a method to convert from Animation to a compressed format that I can use in FCP6 without loosing too much of the quality. Any suggestion?
