60 HOUR Movie! Can Final Cut Pro Handle My Movie??

Hi,
I'm currently working on an art film, which when completed will be around 60+ hours. My assumption is that I'll have to get an enormous external hard drive to store all the files + playback. I planned on playing the film off of the external drive through a laptop and then to a monitor. My question is can Final Cut Pro handle a film of this length if I have the storage, and can anyone see any issues I may encounter with the mentioned setup? Any advice, or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

You aren't going to need an enormous external hard drive as in one - you are going to need several external hard drives. If you work with just about anything over DV you will need plenty of space.
FYI, we edit classes captured over the course of the semester. It is 40-50 hours of video captured in DV-NTSC format. It requires around 400-500GB of storage space per class. If you work in any format larger than DV-NTSC you will need much more storage space.
As per your question, Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 timelines only go up to 12 hours of video (or 6 hours for sequences with high audio rates). There isn't generally much of a need for anything more than that.

What is wrong? All the sudden.

    We need info, info, info!
    What version of FCP X?
Did you render? what are the project specs? do you use many compound clips? how much ram, hard drive space, how is the hard drive connected?
It looks like your mac can't keep up. Maybe the bottleneck is the hard drive, or something else.
Try exporting a master file and see if the video is ok.
Also, keep Activity Monitor open and see how much memory pressure you've got.

  • I have an hd movie on final cut pro x; i want to create an sd disk of that movie. compressor created 2 files: dolby.... and mpeg2. How do I get these files burned to disc to create my sd movie?

These are elementary streams and they would be used by DVD authoring apps that use them for reasons like foreign language capability. Examples would be DVD Studio Pro, Adobe Encore, Toast.
The most straightforward way to burn your DVD is either to use the Share feature in FCP or the Batch Template feature in Compressor.
If you can find a boxed copy of iLife (try Amazon), it should have iDVD as part of the suite of apps. iDVD offers far more complete authoring capability than FCP or C4. iDVD  doesn't work with elementary streams; you'd just drag in your HD movie and you'd be good to go.
    Good lluck.

  • Can final cut pro x remove vocals on mp3?

I want to Karaoke 'Try' by Dolly Parton on Blue Smoke as there are no available karaokes of it commercially, so I want to remove the vocals on the song but keep the musical arrangement.  Can Final Cut Pro X do that?  Thanks, GoDeAn

I don't know anything that can do that. If you find one can you let us know?

and how do I found out if it is intel based?
I am trying to sell my mac and there are people asking me very complex questions.

A G5 is a PPC processor, NOT Intel.
Final Cut Pro 5 will run on a Power Mac G5.
Yes, your tower will run it.

Open the movie in the QuickTime player and report exactly what it says in the movie inpstecor. It's probably not in a spce that FCP supports.

  • Can Final Cut Pro 7 be run on the New MacBook Air

Can Final Cut Pro 7 be run on the New MacBook Air (just for looking at footage and assembling a rough cut) or is the graphics processing inadequate? Also wondering the same about Photoshop CS5 and Aperture 3.1.3.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

You can install on (1) Tower and (1) Laptop, as long as they are both used by you, and NOT at the same time.  This is for when you edit on your tower, but then need to edit at home, or on the road.  You cannot use one copy of FCP on multiple machines at the same time.  You need one copy for each machine you intend to use at the same time.

  • Can final cut pro X handle xvac-s format?

I am trying to find out if Final Cut Pro X can handle xvac-s format?

This is one of FCP X's best features - it's unbelievably good for syncing multicam - just remember to give each clip a different Camera Angle Name (do this in the Inspector) and the App sorts the rest out.

  • QT 7.1.5 can't play QT movie from Final Cut Pro 5.1.4?!

I am editing a film in Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 on a PowerBook running 10.4.9.
But when I moved a QT movie from FCP's "capture scratch" onto my Core 2 Duo MacBook, QT only showed me a white screen and asked me to search for third-party updates/plugins.
To make things even stranger, I loaded the file into my MacBook's Final Cut Pro 5.0 and it runs in there flawlessly!
Since this file is a pure FCP Quicktime video, in HD (Codec: HDV 1080i50, Integer (Big Indian), Timecode), I am very surprised that Quicktime won't play it - and that FCP will...
Is this perhaps due to the fact that my MacBook doesn't have the Universal binary FCP 5.1.4 installed?
I'd appreciate any help I can get.
    Thanks!

Great! Thks David..I have not come up against this prob yet,but as I am progressing along a long edit,no doubt,I will..Your tip is extremely helpful. Thanks again from Australia.

  • Can you import Quicktime movies into Final Cut Pro X

I have a one week old Macbook Pro retina which replaces my old iMac 24 with Snow Leopard. After my purchase, I found out that Mountain Lion will not support FCE 4. The problem is that I have a lot of unfinished FCE projects and a lot of video clips that were imported using Final Cut Express 4 "Log and transfer" on my external drive. I was going to purchase Final Cut Pro X and edit them on  my new computer but first I was going to convert them to Quicktime videos. So my question is, can I open Ouicktime movies for editing in Final Cut Pro X? Or perhaps someone has aneasier way for me to achieve what I am trying to do.
    Thanks in advance........

all of the videos that I imported using "Log and transfer" will only open in FCE 4.
Do you mean the media in the capture scratch folder? These don't open in any other application? Not in the QuickTime player?
If you mean the FCE project files, that's correct they will only open FCE4 or FCP7.

  • I made a movie in Final Cut Pro, it is about an hour long. Now that I am finished with the editing, I need to export it. However when I go to export ("Share", then "Export Using Compressor...") nothing happens.

This movie is for a TV show, and this problem is very urgent. Help Please.

I am having a similar problem.  I cannot export a 4 min. video of to imov or DVD, Youtube, ext. under Share.   Under imov. it takes about 3 hrs to finish then I get a message File Cannot Be Opened.  It leaves and imov icon  but when I select it, a message reads File May Be Damaged.  Under DVD it says The File Is To Large For Disk.
If I need to reinstall Final Cut Pro X how do I go about doing that?
    Thanks

  • Import movie from final cut pro x in pinnacle studio ?

today i make movies with pinnacle studio (windows)
i have pc with blu ray burner in pc (built in)
i would like to buy mac with final cut pro x
is it possible to make movie (high definition) in finacl cut pro x and export to a format which can be imported in pinnacle studio (version 14) without loss of quality
then i would like to burn blu ray on my pc with pinnacle studio
so : make movie with mac and burn HD movie on pc ?

It'd be easier to get Toast 11 Pro and author/burn Blu Ray on your Mac.
BUT, that's extra money you may not want to spend.
Pinnecle, does it import XML files?  Well, that may not work anyway.
You'll have to export a QT movie in FCP X that Pinnacle will read.

  • Is it possible to export Final Cut Pro X or .MOV to DVD Studio Pro (Final Cut Studio)?

Is it possible to export Final Cut Pro X projects or .MOV to DVD Studio Pro (from Final Cut Studio v.3)? I'm using the free trial of Final Cut Pro X and later acquired a copy of Final Cut Studio (FCP 7, Compressor 3.5, DVD Studio Pro 4, Color 1.5, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 2).
I don't like the default DVD export in FCPX, so I would like to do it on DVD Studio Pro. Is it possible to export the project or the final .MOV file to DVD Studio Pro?
Additionally, can I use unfinished FCPX projects on FCP7?
Is it possible to export from FCPX to Compressor 3.5 (Final Cut Studio)?
Feedback would be greatly appreciated. As of this post, I have about 13 days left on my FCPX trial. Or would it just make sense to just use Final Cut Pro 7, since I have a permanent copy of it?
    Thank you.
P.S. Where would be the best place to store projects or any other file related to Final Cut Studio or Final Cut Pro X? My MacBook Pro has 320GB built in storage (only 60GB available), and I have a 1TB external hard drive.
What is best to store on the Macintosh internal hard drive?
What is best to store on the external hard drive?

Yes you can make DVDs in DVDSP using video exported from FCPX.
There are some apps that will translate between X and 7- that said I would highly recommend not going back and forth as the translations are not 1:1 perfect.
I would recommend storing all Events and Projects on the External drive.
Compressor 3.5 will not accept exports directly from FCPX- you'll need Compressor 4 which is $49.
Totally up to you whether you want to make the jump to X. 7 is an EOL'ed program, meaning there will not be another version of that application. Final Cut Pro X is the version being actively developed now.
