600 and 600e modem problem, and BIOS update

I hope I can find the answers to my 600 and 600e problems here. I've looked over the whole community and can't find the answer to my problems.
BIOS Problem:  For some reason I can't update the bios on either machine. I am upgrading from 98 to 2000. I believe I need spsdib54 as a BIOS update. I find IBM laptops rather difficult to update. I have worked on a few computers in my day, but never IBM until now, and the learning curve is hell. I have a floppy drive but can't get the laptop to allow the spsdib54 file to open. I get a remove media message and then hit any key to continue. I'm lost here.and theIBM instructions are no help
MODEM Problem. I am trying to use AOL dialup. I install 2000, and can test my modem on both machines. I install AOL with no problems. Both laptops will dial out and get the correct Phone numbers. When I let AOL use smart connect and try to proceed, I loose all modem activity, and can't get it back even with the Modem upgrade which I have done. ....help

I. Create a System Program Service Diskette:
Download spsdib54.exe (TP 600E: spsdih47.exe or spsdin36.exe - find out here) to your desktop.
Insert a high density floppy disk into the diskette drive.
Double-click the downloaded exe and follow the instructions on the screen.
II. Follow the "Installation Instructions" in spsdib54.txt to update the BIOS:
Installation Instructions
Notes: - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update
              the system program.
            - If your computer is attached to any kinds of Docking station
or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it
              before proceeding.
            - Make sure the SPSD diskette is write protected.
1.  Print these instructions or display on another computer.
2.  Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3.  Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive
     and turn on the computer.
4.  Select Read this first from the menu and carefully read the
     information that appears.
5.  Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
6.  Select Update system program and follow the instruction on
     the screen.
Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update
has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE
COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE
SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
After the update has been completed, do the following to make the
changes effective.
7.   Make sure the System Program Service Diskette is removed from
the diskette drive, then turn off the computer.
8.   Press and hold the F1 key, then turn on the computer. Hold the F1
key until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
9.   If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
10. Select Config, then select Initialize.
11. Select OK to initialize the system.
Run the diagnostics to make sure that the computer runs with no
errors:
12. Turn off the computer, press and hold the F1 key, then turn on
the computer. Hold the F1 key until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
13. Select Test, then select Start to run all the basic tests.
Various test patterns will appear on the screen.
An OK will appear for each device that passes the test.
14. Verify that OK appears for all of the devices tested.
15. Press the Esc key to exit Test and turn off the computer.

  • [Solved] Mouse and Keyboard Dont Work After BIOS Update

I spent the last few hours in windows 7 trying to prove to the guys over at MSFN that my problem wasn't driver or bios related by updating to the latest drivers and upgrading my bios to the most recent version. After I was finished I decided to boot back into arch to work some more on my custom kernel (since oddly it had the same problem before the bios update, the mouse and keyboard worked on one boot but once i rebooted into it again they no longer worked) and found that the keyboard and mouse no longer worked, thinking I had rebooted into the custom kernel by accident I rebooted and selected the default kernel once again only to find that the mouse and keyboard still didn't work.
Any ideas on how to fix this? I really don't want to reinstall since I just installed it last night.
Edit: Another silly mistake, i had renamed the original xorg.conf and never put back when I was finished. This makes me wonder why KDM even started up at all though.

Hello base76, welcome to the HP Forums.
It appears that the mouse and keyboard aren't working correctly. I will try to assist you with this.
To start could you please provide the following:
Model and product numbers for you notebook.
    Currently install operating system.
Were these working previously? If yes, were any changes made prior to them not working?
Have you attempted any troubleshooting? If yes, what have you tried so far?
I look forward to your reply.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • Encore 2 Write (WT10PE-A) and 64GB SDXC card after BIOS update

Two days ago I got two updates through the Toshiba application, one was the BIOS (to 1.40 version) and the other was the wifi driver. Now I can't access my sdxc card, which I was able to use and access since I bought the tablet. The card is working okay with any other laptop/computer I've tried, it's the tablet the only one with a problem. My guess is, the BIOS corrupted something in the system. Is there a way to go back to the previous version? Or to contact Toshiba and report the problem with the sdcard so they can fix it for the new version? By the way, I'm still in Windows 8.1, as I need to finish some work and don't want to risk it updating yet

    Hi
As I remember the BIOS supports an option called PC Card Controller Mode and the Configuration Device Config.
Here you can change the setting to Setup by OS or All settings.
Using All settings you could change the PC card Controller mode to Auto selected or PCIC compatible or Cardbuss/16-bit.
Check this settings and play little bit around. Maybe it helps.

  • K8T Neo FIS2R and AMD DTR 3400+ compatability - Bios Update ?

As title , trying to install AMD64 DTR 3400+ cpu on mobo with no luck.
Currently running AMD64 3200+ on board with no problems. Install this cpu and no boot up can get as far a Bios set-up where i choose default optimal bios but then the system just hangs.
Have never updated bios , so i assume i'm still using V.1 ( had this set-up for almost 2 years )
Tried CMOS clearing , no luck.
    As last resort ( after reading tales of disaster ! ) I tried to flash Bios to V 1.9 ( as reccommended for old clawhammers ) but didn't work ;
    Created dos start up disk
at a> prompt , followed instructions to the letter , but kept getting "invalid drive" error messages.
    So still using bios v.1
    Any Help ??
    Thanks,
                Mark

Do you still have the old CPU? If so pop it in and run Live update and do a Bios Update. Do not let it do more than create the Flash disk and instyall the files on the flash disk. Shut down Live update at that point and take the 1.9 imge that you have and rename it to AMIBOOT.ROM and copy it onto the new floppy you made.
Shut down and go into Bios. Turn off Boot Block Virus protection and set the 1st Boot device to Floppy. Pop in the new floppy you made and reboot. Follow the instruction that come up on the screen. turn off the machine after the flash is done.
Go back into Bios and reset Optimal Defaults. Save and exit and then shut back down.
You should be fine at this point to install that new CPU.

  • Satellite A660 - USB boot problems after BIOS update

    Hello,
I own a Toshiba Satellite A660 and recently have update the BIOS to the latest version (1.80). Since then the notebook will freeze on the boot screen (the one with the Toshiba logo) whenever a USB flash memory is attached.
It works without the flash memory connected and also if I connect it after I enter the boot menu or the BIOS setup. I can even boot from it like this.
As far as I am concerned this is a serious regression. Is there any way I can downgrade the BIOS version, or any other way to fix this issue ? I rely heavily on external USB drives.
    Regards,
    Claudiu.

I too am having problems with my A660 since upgrading to 1.80 bios - the HDD/SD utility, the pc health monitor and half the other toshiba utilities no longer work because they can't recognize the bios and actually tell me this... I get an error message telling me ''can't get bios type''...
On top of this I get the boot problem as well - I have to unplug half of my USB devices to get the laptop to boot properly...
And now - one month into owning my new A660 - after a hard drive failure, a problem with the Broadcom internal wireless adaptor I now have the internal TV tuner no longer working and have no idea how to fix it...
My gut feeling is that the sooner I can downgrade to the original factory bios the BETTER - and wait for another bios update to come along that is not faulty/buggy...
HOPE someone can help me with this...
    John.

  • Problems after BIOS update on DKA790GX Platinum

    Hi,
I have set up a pc with the DKA790GX Platinum (MS7550). The config:
    - Phenom 8750
    - Silverstone 400W PSU (fanless)
    - 2x2GB Crucial PC5300
    - Pioneer Blu-ray
    - Seagate Momentus 5400.4
    (this is a HTPC setup...)
The pc started up fine and I installed the OS. I had the board connected to my monitor through HDMI.
After updating the BIOS the board went all black on me. I tried connecting a floppy-drive to recover to a older BIOS-version, but could get the board to do that. I then tried different monitor-connections, but nothing.
I then installed a Gigabyte Radeon HD 4870 1GB-board I had laying here, and board seems to boot somehow - all graphics are messed so I can't read whats on the screen, but at least I get some kind of image. A little unsure on how the PSU handle that videoboard.
Anyone know if the 1.2 BIOS-update maybe is set to <swearing removed> the integrated video by looking for a videoboard in the system? Have a Asus 9800GT Matrix-board in a another pc here - maybe I remove that and try it in the new pc, but... argh..
This ain't funny at all anymore. I had a P45 Platinum dying during a BIOS upgrade. I had a P45 Diamond that dosn't want to boot anymore, and now this... MSI-motherboards really don't want to be friends with me at the time  :-|

Hi have exactly teh same problem,
On Dec/2008 I have set up a PC with DKA790GX Platinum (MS7550 ver 1.2), Phenom 9750, 1 120GB hd, 4 MB corsair xms2 ddr2 800mhz, psu 500w. I installed the win xp pro OS. I had the board connected to my monitor vga. After updating the BIOS (with live update utility) the board went all black on me (the fan, PSU, hd starts normal). I test the PSU, HD and the memory, but the problem still continue.
Two days after, the PC start normal, but I don't know what was the problem.
Aleatory when try to start the PC, sometimes I get exactly the same problem, but, Yesterday, I try again to work with me PC and now i have the same problem.
What can i do to fix this problem?

  • CMOS/Boot Problems after BIOS Update

I just used Live Update (two weeks ago) to update to all the latest utilities, drivers and BIOS on the following computer:
    MSI 865PE Neo2-FIS2R
    Pentium 4 2.4ghz / 800mhz / HT
    512mb PC3200 (1 DIMM)
    ATI Radeon 9600 128mb 8xAGP
Two WD 120GB/7200RPM ATA Harddrives - mirrored
    FSP350-60PN Power Supply
    Pinnacle PCTV PCI Card
Windows XP Pro - fully updated
The boot up screen now identifies BIOS as A6728 IMS V2.2 051904.
Since the update, the computer does not allow the operating systyem to shut it down - and the boot up process has been problematic (to say the least).
After the BIOS update, I set the BIOS settings to "performance defaults" - and everything seemed fine for awhile.
But then the boot up problems started - and I was once confronted with the message that "dram timing was too tight".
I reverted the bois settings to "default" - to no avail.  The problems are continuing - and I am getting somewhat fearful that the system will not boot at all pretty soon.
After about 20 power on/off cycles where I got nothing but a blank screen, the system is now booted to a screen that is telling me that the CMOS settings are incorrect - and I have the options to run setup or load defaults and continue.
I know that I want to run setup, but what do I do to get this to stop happening?
    Tahnks,
    Bob99

As is usual, at least one mistake is made when building a PC.  Rather than getting name-brand memory, in a moment of weakness, I ordered the generic stuff:
    http://www.mwave.com/mwave/viewspec.hmx?scriteria=BA08583
I looked for documentation on RAM voltage, and found the MSI information on the MOBO product page:
Due to the High Performance Memory design, motherboards or system configurations may or may not operate smoothly at the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) standard settings (BIOS Default on the motherboard) such as DDR voltage, memory speeds and memory timing. Please confirm and adjust your memory setting in the BIOS accordingly for better system stability.
    Example: Kingston HyperX DDR500 PC4000 operates at 2.65V, 3-4-4-8, CL=3.
For more information about specification of high performance memory modules, please check with your Memory Manufactures for more details.
I also saw a couple of articles that said to be "very careful" with this setting as you can fry your memory.  But I haven't found anything to help me learn about what the settings mean -  or where I should start (2.65?).
Should I call Mwave and as them for the specs?
BTW - The computer is my son's - and he is moving back to college.  I was giving it a tune up (driver's, etc.) - and noticed the ATI issue.  Since I won't see it for 9-10 months and who knows what he will want to add to it, I thought it would be a good idea.  I am a previous user of ASUS and my experience with them is that it takes about a year of BIOS updates to actually stabilize all the features.
    Thanks for your help...

  • Tecra 8100 problem after BIOS update

    Greetings
    I have a tecra 8100, 700 mhz with 256RAM,
and it works a treat, until I decided to update the BIOS, the date of the previous version was 1999!
As I run a linux OS on this device I downloaded the a boot image of the current Bios version and loaded it at boot, it reported update success.
My problem now is the system boots fine but runs exceedingly slow,
it takes 15 minutes to boot, and is virtually unusable.
I have run many tests for benchmarking and memory tests from Hiram's boot CD and the only problem to report was my 700 CPU is running at 114.82. And of couse running, the CPU is running at 100%.
I have cleared the cmos data and restarted using default BIOS settings.
Searched extensively on the net, and cannot find an answer.
    Please help.

    Hi
I have visited the Toshiba European driver page and found the newest BIOS version which is 2.50-WIN.
    Do you use this?
This BIOS can be updated only running windows OS! Therefore Im very surprised that you were able to update the BIOS running the Linux OS on this machine.
Try to download the newest BIOS version and update it like described on the BIOS update help page.

  • P4N Diamond SATA Problem after Bios Update HELP!

I updated the bios correctly & now my SATA harddrive won't recognize.I put the drive in another pc (with the exact same setup..a p4n diamond etc) and it works no problem. The bios settings are set exactly as they were before the flash as i wrote them down!.
I have noticed there is an extra setting added in the bios ,something in the cell menu named CPU ratio unlock.
I have also noticed that my other pc (the working one) will no longer connect to the net if my network cable is plugged in my router from the pc with the bios update. As soon as i unplug the cable it connects.
I got the latest bios for the board is there something different in the bios from previously i need to do?
Like i says the bios settings i have put exactly the same as they were before the update. My windows (on the SATA drive) booted fine before the update and now it won't.
I updated the bios correctly and cleared cmos afterwards.Everything i should have done i am guessing i done.
Can somebody please help me on this.
    Thanks
Decided to reflash the bios to version 1.4
Now the harddrive is recognised but windows will not boot (blue screen before it boots with the usual to prevent damage to your computer etc etc)
I am now formatting the harddrive & reinstalling windows. It seems MSI have issues with bios updates for this board which they should maybe bring out a new bios fixing this problem as it sure is a problem.

RE flashing the bios.I did this to try and fix a problem with windows not turning off when shutting down.I pc does the other does not & both have the same board and now the same version bios & also a freshly installed windows.I noticed power options in windows are not the same. How can this be.The boards are the same.
Anyway here are the specs of pc1 & pc2:-
    pc1 (the working fine pc):-
    P4N diamond bios ver 1.40
    P4 SKT 775 Prescott 3.6ghz
    2gb kingston ddr2 (dual channel)
    1x 200gb maxtor IDE hd
    2x 160gb maxtor SATA hd
    Ati Radeon x600 gfx
    pc2
    P4N diamond bios ver 1.40
    P4 SKT 775 Prescott 3.4ghz
    512mb crucial ddr2 (1 stick single channel)
    1x SATA2 16mb cache hd
    nvidia quadro gfx
As you can see,not much difference between the 2.

just reporting back on my finds!
thanks to u 2 guyz and the info u gave me i was able to look deeper into the situation, and managed to get wat i wanted!
well the guy on live chat couldnt even type in english very well never mind help me so i phoned them up and the guy was very helpful and forwarded me to:
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8NGM2-L&class=mb (which i previously looked at but wasnt quite following)
the board is OEM BUT! the bios was designed with future developement in mind for processors and the
K8NGM2-L MS-7207 motherboard is compatable with:
    Quote
       CPU
    •    Supports 64-bit AMD® Athlon™ 64FX/64 processor (Socket 939)
    •    Supports 3000+, 3200+, 3500+, 3800+, 4000+, 4400+, 4600+, 4800+, FX53, FX55, FX57, FX60
which is nice to know, only getting the FX series will be brought down by the ram being only DDR which is a shame but if u are thinking of upgrading ur mother board soon the FX series will work with the K8NGM2-L until u get a more powerful board
so for this board the 3800+ or 4000+ are the ideal chip for this board, anything high i would suggest getting a better board.
so i hope this helps others out with the same problem or questions!

  • X79a-GD65 (8D) (MS-7760) - Problems after BIOS update

Long story short, I updated my BIOS the above stated board and after updating found that the board would no longer boot, I followed the instructions provided on this site to recover the failed BIOS (switched to 2nd bios, booted, entered bios update, switched over to failed bios, updated bios with good bios file). This recovered the board/bios however the machine now prompts each time stating "Something has changed, press F1 to enter setup or F2 to accept defaults". If I enter the bios I find everything is configured as I set it, even try changing something simple and saving but still getting the prompt each time. I can switch over to the other BIOS but obviously want to address this issue.
What do I need to do to get the BIOS fully restored/not prompting me every time?
    Thanks in advance,

Your issue might be similar to this thread.
Can you try to disable UEFI by:
    1. Booting into the BIOS (press F2 after you turn the computer ON)
    2. In the Boot Tab, set UEFI to disabled or legacy mode and press F10 to save and exit.
    3. Try to repair your Windows installation and observe.
