6000 RPM fans while idle, normal?

Hello friends,
A few days ago my MBP started spinning up the fans like I was doing something really intensive.  Only I wasn't.  I installed smcfancontrol and it reported both fans at close to 6000rpm (5899 is the highest I've seen it) and a cpu temp of 75 c - 85 c while idle.  iStat Pro reported the same. No apps running after a reboot and the fans instantly spin up and the cpu temp hovers around the 80 mark.  I'm of the understanding that 50 - 70 is considered normal with the fans in the 2000-3000 rpm range. Yes?
Heres a screen cap with only Activity Monitor running. You can see the most intensive process is 3.5% and the temp and fan speed can be seen in the upper right.
Never had any issues before, just out of the blue.  I did swap out the HDD a few months ago, but the problem JUST started.
I've reset the SMC per these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US  but didn't change anything.
Thanks as always for any insight.

The simplest (but not quickest) route would be a reinstall of the OS.
Although, if the problem doesn't appear in safe mode, you could check the differences between safe mode and a normal bootup:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
The most important things are:
- disables all login and startup items (you could test that by adding another account)
- loads only required kernel extensions
That last one is somewhat trickier. On the commandline, you can check what 3rd party kernel extensions are installed, check out this article:
http://osxdaily.com/2010/08/03/list-all-third-party-kernel-extensions/
For instance, when I type the command mentioned in the article, I get the following output (edited for brevity):
$ kextstat | grep -v com.apple
Index Refs ... Size       Wired      Name (Version)
  114    0 ... 0xc000     0xc000     com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge
  115    0 ... 0x4000     0x4000     com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic
  118    0 ... 0x7000     0x7000     com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect
  119    0 ... 0x4e000    0x4e000    com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor
  120    0 ... 0x4000     0x4000     com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook
  122    0 ... 0x1a000    0x1a000    org.pqrs.driver.KeyRemap4MacBook
  123    0 ... 0x4000     0x4000     org.pqrs.driver.PCKeyboardHack
$
So obviously, I have Parallels installed, as well as KeyRemap4MacBook and PCKeyboardHack. Removing the software for these 3rd party kernel extensions could perhaps solve your problem.

  • Fan speed always 6000 rpm

    Hi!
I got early 2008 MBP , and both fan speed is around 6000 rpm. They work such way all time.  GPU temp in fan control is 0 , other temp is ok. In program (Temperature monitor) i can see a temp of Graphic Processor Temperature Diod, is it a temp of gpu? I try to run hardware test, but i haven't got install DVD and holding D when starts doesn't help.

If your GPU temperature is 0, that suggests a problem.  It may be that the fan controls have set to a default level and thus the 6000 rpm fan speeds.  I think that you will have to take it to a repair facility for evaluation and repair.
    Ciao.

  • CPU fan speed - is 6000 rpm at 41C normal?

I have asked about this before - haven't found a solution yet - -- just want to know how fast a bog-standard retail fan for the 3800+ should be going ...mine hit about 6200 rpm a short while ago when the CPU temp was 41 C, and sounded (as someone else describes it "like a Dyson") ... it is now at 36 C and has just dropped below 5000 rpm ... I can hear myself think now ... I have Speedfan but haven't a clue as how to get it to "control" the fan speed - 6000 rpm seems somewhat high for 41 C!!
If I would be better using a different CPU cooling solution ... what "fan" would anyone recommend? ... with a price limit of around £20 ....
    JLP

Keep in mind that each CPU will operate at different temps depending on which core you have, the Ambient temp and the case temp as well as what your using as cooling and what case fans you have. Just because one person gets a good temp does not mean you will get the same.
For instance a computer in a hot room will end up with ahigher temp than one in an airconditiooned room. A Computer with dual 120mm case fans can usually be cooler than one with 2 80mm fans and so on.
Also note that it can depend on how you use your computer as the heavier the loads the more heat will build. Bigger Vid cards in the system will produce more heat than a small and cool vid card. So it stands to reason that the componants also play a part.
Cool and Quiet will also be a factor as it is meant to keep the CPU slow and cool when there is only small loads on the system.

  • Macbook Pro fans stuck at 6000 RPM

    Hello,
I am using a 2006 MacBook Pro, 2GB RAM, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo with a 500GB HDD that has 450 GB free.
About a month ago the left and right fan started cranking up to 6000 RPM (which is apparently max for this model) upon startup. Most discussions I've read while looking for a solution suggest resetting the SMC, which I have tried a few times to no avail. CPU and RAM usage are normal, nothing taking up tons of processing power on activity monitor and temps are around 35-40 degrees Celsius. I saw a few boards talk about a stuck print job which I checked for as well, but there was nothing. I tried downloading and using the smcFan Control app and setting the preferred fan speed to as low as possible but the app still registers speed at 6000 RPM and they have not slowed down.
Unfortunately, I bought this MBP from a used dealer (had it for a few months before this started), so I do not have the original OS disks to perform a hardware diagnostic. It came with 10.5 on it but I have since upgraded to 10.6.8
I'm not experiencing any problems with operation but the fans at this speed are extremely loud and annoying; is there anything further I can do to try to fix this? I'm a bit new to macs, is there a program that gives you more powerful fan control than the one I downloaded? How much would something like this cost to get fixed by Apple? Thank you in advance for any advice.

You likely have blocked vents inside or a hardware issue, like a failed sensors to trigger the fans at default max warp speed.
If your adapt at opening it up, you might want to take a look at these videos and get yourself a can of air spray + tube and blast out the obstructions out from the inside.

  • Fans going at 6000 rpm with little cpu usage--computer too hot?

    Hi,
I am not sure what normal temperatures are for my computer, but often the fans are running at 6000 rpm when the computer doesn't have all that much going on. When I am trying do anything actually demanding, the fans are running non-stop. I've also noticed that things have just been running rather slowly, with lags in mouseclicks and typing. I am not sure if these are related, or why the computer might be working so hard to complete simple tasks. Here is a picture of iStatPro showing what's going on--CPU is 95% idle and the fans are at 6000 rpm. Does anyone know if the temperatures shown are normal or what I can do to improve the situation?
    Thanks!
    Laura

  • Will fans running at 6000 rpm hurt my macbook pro?

Whenever I run certain programs the fans will run at 6000 rpm after 20 mins or so.  The actual temp of the computer will reach 80C max but the fans seem to be working very hard. Will this harm my computer?

Yes and no. The fans are spinning at that speed to try and keep the system cool. That is normal. But the excess heat being built up from that program will cause parts to ware faster than less heat.
Will it cause the system to fail sooner than later? Maybe then maybe not. Each computer is different, even of the same exact model. Some last a long time, other don't no matter how they are ran or treated.

  • Fan buzzing noise at 6000 rpm.. Sound worst when tilted on any axis...

My macbook been overheated since the Snow Leopard upgrade but what really anoy me the most is that the fan make a buzzing sound over 6000 rpm and when I pick up the MBA is tilt in any axis it make a noise like a fly is right next to your ear and it also feel like the fan is loose or somthing. Is that fan sound normal for those who got a macbook pro. Try tilting the laptop a little and does it make a weird sound? I keep thinking is a defective fan or something is loose that relate to the fan.
Does this happen with your guys macbook air? Is this normale of should I bring it in and see if I can get my fan replace.
I can barely hear it at 2000 rpm but at 6000 is really anoying to work with the computer for me...

I would get it check out. It might be the blase hitting or a motor bearing.

  • Can putting your fans on 6000 RPM cause damage?

Whenever I play world of warcraft on my macbook pro retina gets pretty hot ,but when I put the fans on 6000 RPM it stays pretty cool so I was wondering if putting the fans on those setting can damage my computer/fans?

Only to wear out the fan motor faster than it would left to run at its normal speed depending on the heat generated.

  • HELP ME !!!! My MBP fans are stuck on 6000 rpm

I recently cleaned the right fan on mbp because it was making a grinding noise . I then ran smc fan control to make sure that my fans were running well , now everytime i switch on my mbp the fans rev up to 6000 rpm and stay even if no programs are open. My temps are averaging around 35 celcious . I have tried everything , smc reset , pram reset , osx complete reinstalation and also tried to do a firmware restoration . None of these things have worked . Please help me

Have you tried running the Apple Hardware test? I'm wondering if a thermal sensor may have become dislodged or unplugged, as that would also cause the fans to run all out.
Also, have you checked in Activity Monitor to be sure you don't have some hung up process hogging the CPU and causing the fans to run all out? Be sure to select "CPU" on the bottom bar and "All Processes" on the top.
    Good luck!

  • Fans always running at 6000 RPM.

I have had this problem since my friend gave me his old macbook pro. The fans are very loud and running very fast. First I thought dust might be stuck inside but I checked and nothing was there. Nevertheless I cleaned it. When I powered on my macbook it was still very loud so I checked with SMCFanControl and it was still running at 6000 RPM. I have tried resetting PRAM and the SMC without any success. Also software like SMCFanControl and iCyclone won't let me change the speed even though the CPU is at 40C most of the time. I don't really want to take it for repair at the apple store because they will probably charge me a fortune. It is a MacBook Pro Late 2006 model. Thank You.

Same situation here - the only update: it started to happen after I replaced the palmrest, screen assembly and installed SSD Intel X25M drive. First, at startup fans are quiet, and then slowly going to higher speeds. Since I did upgrade everything at the same time I did not catch what was the source of this issue. First I blaimed SSD since it's not getting any warmer (as oppose to standard SATA drive) and that might have confused the Mac's fan control. The other thought was the SSDs have a different SMART reporting method... Well, all kinds of resets (SMC and PRAM) did not help, neither utilities like smcFan Control and others. BTW, smcFan control shows temps from 35C-37C and 5200-5500 RPM. Fans are blowing a cool air, no signs of overheating at all.
    Bad temp sensors?
    Any thoughts?

  • Lenovo U400 with Ubuntu 14.04 overheating with fan being idle

I've had Ubuntu 14.04 on my Lenovo U400 laptop for a year or so and everything was fine. Suddenly yesterday I noticed when I was working on it, that it was running really hot, almost burning my left palm. It's been quite hot in my area for a couple of days so this might have triggered the temperature, I thought. However what surprised me was that the fan was really slow. In the past it used to spin really fast whenever the computer was heating too much. I installed `lm-sensors` according to the Ubuntu manual. Here is the output of sensors-detect.This is the output at normal load: szymon@lenovo:~$ sensors

This sounded quite alarming to me, so I tried to figure out how to control the fan manually to make it spin faster. I found no such option in BIOS. Then I installed `fancontrol` also according to the manual. Unfortunately, when running `sudo pwmconfig` I got the following error: /usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed I tried fixing it with this hack, which consisted of adding `acpi_enforce_resources=lax` to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT. It didn't work, nothing changed when running `sudo pwmconfig` after updating grub and rebooting. I also tried to turn off the switchable AMD graphics following these instructions, but it didn't reduce the temperatures. Do you have any idea on why the fan isn't spinning faster at such temperatures or how to control it manually?

Did you get a kernel update recently?

  • 2013 MacPro is quite hot while idle

I have noticed previously that my 2013 MacPro is significantly warmer than others while idle. Just placing my hand on top reveals it to be quite warm, while the store models and my friend's machine (which is identical to my own) are quite cool (barely noticeable heat).
Checking iStat menus, my "PCIe Switch Diode" is currently sitting above 80°C, and has been for the recent history. See attached graphs.
Is this... normal? My machine is essentially doing nothing (<2% CPU usage, <2fps from the D700s).
The rest of the sensors currently read:

I do not know what those numbers should look like, but I am surprised by seeing things called "12V High…" at under 12 Volts. It has been a tradition to run the 12 Volts at higher than 12V, then regulate it down for actual use.
Are you getting "noises" out of the power supply? An annoying humming sound? Some Users had noises that drove them crazy and their Macs worked much better after Apple replaced the supply (under warranty).

  • Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing randomly in mavericks while idling, using firefox, transferring files, etc.  Reformatted and reinstalled everything from scratch after 15 plus crashes a day.  Crashes now only 4 times a day.  Help!

Brand new imac 27" keeps crashing.  I'm running 10.9.2 with all software up to date.  It will crash on file tranfers to/from/between external drives, web browsing, word processing, video editing, and even while idling.  It used to crash every 15 minutes when I first got it but I reformatted and reinstalled all software.  Now it it still crashing albeit less often.  This is extremely frustrating because I have no idea what I can do to prevent it from happening!
Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm thanks for the input.  Alright. I uninstalled Avast.  Was good for an hour or so.  I was doing some file browsing and crashed again.  Got this message.

My iphone is draining like crazy. i gets completely empty within 06 hours while idling... i am baffled.. please help

There's an app on the phone that is stuck sending data, or trying to send and failing, and in an infinite loop. Mail can do this if you have an Exchange account or iCloud account. Sometimes a corrupt calendar entry or contact can cause this.
But first, if you have either type of account go into Settings and turn it off, then reboot the phone (hold HOME and SLEEP until an Apple logo appears). If the problem goes away you have identified the culprit. If you turn the account back on and the problem does not come back no further action is required.
If this doesn't fix it you have to find the app. Any app that exchanges a lot of data (Facebook, Whatsapp, etc) is a possibility.

    Hi ,
My MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2010) switches on but internal display remains off/black .There is no start-up sound and the fan starts off normal but after about Five minutes begins to run even faster as if the machine is running a heavy load.It displayed a question mark some time back then a friend borrwed it ,he flashed the system and put windows 7.Then a few days pasted and now it wont display as stated.I have tried to Reset SMC and the Command + P + R + Power but still no response. Please assist?
    Regrads Josh

I think your "friend" caused a problem (or two).
I do not know what "flashed the system" means......
Based on what was done, I would probably erase the HD and restore the system from a backup before the software changes were made.
