60G iPod 'Resets' itself sporadically... What's Up with that?

I have a 60G iPod that has about 2800 songs loaded (+ about a dozen jpg images). Loaded from a WIN2K based PC using iTunes 6.0.4.2 and the latest iPod Update software.
When playing, the unit will sporadically 'Reset' itself (Run through shutdown/startup while displaying the Apple Logo) with no button pushes or any other contact. It's to the point now where it is never a matter of "IF" it will do it, simply a matter of "WHEN" or "HOW SOON" it will occur... very, very frustrating!!! Sometimes I can run about 30-45 minutes before it happens, sometimes it happens on the second or third song (5 or 10 minutes).
I have Reset the iPod, Upgraded the iPod to the latest OS, Reinstalled OS and consistently upgraded to the newest iTunes version, and Restored the iPod to factory level Zero and then reloaded all 2700+ songs and 13 photos... no changes... still dumps whenever it decides to.
Oh yeah... it sits in a BOSE dock, charging every night so the power should be adequate.
Any ideas or insights from ANYONE? Thanks in Advance for your reply/response!!!
I'm getting exceedingly frustrated, especially when I see my wife's 30G operate absolutely fine. Don't know if song count makes any difference but she doesn't has barely begun to load any real quantity of material yet...
iPod v5 60G   Windows 2000

Here is my 'tech/test report' for the day:
I plugged in the iPod to my work computer, same as yesterday. No songs in library, etc, etc.
Using the iPod as the song file source, and playing the songs using iTunes as the controlling interface, this thing played all day, hour after hour, with no resets, no issues of any type.
After ejecting the iPod and playing it on the way home, I was able to get approximately one (1) hour of play time before the iPod went into the 'AUTO-RESET' mode, by rebooting itself with no contact.
I believe we state with a high level of assurance the issue is neither MECHANICAL (i.e. a bad or tempermental hard-drive) or due to bad files. The iPod did what it was supposed to do for hours when using an external (i.e. Workstation) user interface (iTunes). Although possible, I still doubt the RESET issue stems from a battery/power triggered event.
I tend to believe the issue lies somewhere within the UI or OS on the unit itself. Perhaps some memory cache that fails to clear and eventually fills and forces a reset?
Still searching for THE solution...
Ps: I WILL NOT BE UPGRADING TO 1.1.1 ... those issues look REALLY UGLY!!! Atleast I still get to listen to SOME songs before it bites the dust!

  • Why did my iPod  reset itself when I was trying to watch a video?

    Hi Everyone,
I was watching a video on my ipod and I got halfway through the video and the Ipod reset itself. My iPod is okay after it reset itself. I was wondering has this happened to anyone else and what can I do to fix it?
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    lizabler

    Hey lizabler!
I personally haven't experiened this specific thing myself, by I have certainly read issues like your quite a few times on the Discussions.
When your iPod resets itself in this kind of case, this happens usually because, while you're playing a video on your iPod, it's not being able to continuouly load and play that video fast enough to actually play the video at a normal speed.
This can be caused by the iPod's battery.
How charged/discharged was your iPod around the time when your iPod reset itself? Try letting your iPod's battery fully die, then let it recharge for a full 3 hours, and see if this ever happens again.
Also, if this ever happens again, have you tried resetting your iPod several times? (holding the "Menu" and middle buttons together for 10 seconds)
Sometimes your iPod resetting itself can also be caused by your iPod's memory being highly used. For example, if you have a 60 GB iPod, and you've used up 54 GB of it already, this can sometimes somehow bog up the iPod, causing it to act strangely.
If this iPod-resetting-itself behavior recurrs, and resetting the iPod several times doesn't help, try restoring your iPod to factory settings -> How to restore your iPod
I hope that info helps you.

Thanks.  The reason this has become an issue is that I recently bought a new Macbook Air that the iPad is not synced to.  The one is was synced to was stolen.  If I want to sync this iPad to the new Air, won't it be wiped before I'm able to copy these films or am I wrong about that?

You need to do the basic troubleshooting steps described in the User Guide, Appendix B.
    Restart phone
    Reset phone
Restore in iTunes using a backup
Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup
If restoring as new doesn't help, there is a hardware failure in the phone that needs evaluation by Apple.

I have the exact same issue. I also tried resetting my password. I can log in to iTunes on my laptop with the new password, on to my iPhone iTunes, but my Apple TV says it cannot recognize my password. I just did an Apple Tv software update a few days ago.
I am able to log in to Netflix on my Apple TV just fine. I did not have to re-enter my password for that.
Very frustrating. I hope Apple can figure this out soon and post a fix.
    Thanks for any advice.  Cheers.

  • Replacement fee for built-in MBP batteries  - what's up with that?

My son just got back from the Southcenter Seattle Apple Store after they replaced a VERY dead 13 inch MBP battery under warranty (down to less than 600 mAh in 140 cycles!!). Other than it took 'em rather longer than the oft-repeated-here time of 10 minutes, he also got a receipt with a charge of $214 on it! This included $85 for replacing the battery plus the cost of the battery itself.
He didn't have to pay it - it was a warranty replacement - but was told that that's what it would have cost had it not been under warranty/AppleCare. What's up with that? When they came out with the built-in batteries we were told by Apple that replacing them would cost the same as if the battery WERE replaceable by the user (such as on my 12 inch PB on which this is being typed).
I was seriously considering replacing this PB with the new 13 inch MBP, but I don't like being lied to about the battery replacement.....or was someone in the store just "confused"?
I see lots of others who have had short battery life and replacements here - anyone else get a receipt with a "repair charge"?

I am one dissatisfied owner of a 15" Macbook Pro. I called Apple Germany and complained of my battery issues over 3 months ago and was told well its normal with batteries to last for 2 hours maximum with normal usage. That wasn't what I was told when I being talked into buying a Macbook Pro by the Apple sales people. Little did I know that the person I was on the phone with was just playing for time so that I get over the 1 year warranty period and get screwed. Now I'm being asked to get a battery on my own reasons being my Mac is 14 months old but hey, I called the guys when when I realized how phony my battery was over three months ago. I'm just not satisfied with this sort of service and why doesn't Apple come clean when pitching a product to clients. I should have understood if I was told "hey dude, this battery will run out in about 10 months so you'll need a replacement on your tab". But instead I was told how green it was and 5 hours on each full charge. God knows I've never had even 4 hours of battery life no matter how hard I try ( reduce contrast, deactivate backlight keyboard etc.) I mean, that's not how you treat clients. I called and complained about it way back and was told its normal and that the 5 hour battery life is just a marketing pitch. I'm not even mad of the fact that my AppleCare Protection plan is of no good at this moment but the fact that folks at Apple told me what I wanted to hear just to buy some time to leave me in the cold. No I'm stuck with a battery that last for 20 minutes max after a full charge. So much for great customer service.

  • My internet connection is intermittent with my MBP but it's fine with my iPad. What's up with that?

My internet connection is intermittent with my MBP but it's fine with my iPad. What's up with that?

Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.4 or later, run Wireless Diagnostics and take the remedial steps suggested in the summary that appears, if any. The program also generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. Continue if you find that Wi-Fi is faster with Bluetooth disabled.
From that same menu, select Open Bluetooth Preferences. If the box labeled Discoverable is checked, uncheck it. Click the Advanced button, and in the sheet that opens, uncheck the top three boxes, if any are checked. Click OK. Enable Bluetooth and test again.
If the application called "Bluetooth Setup Assistant" is running, quit it.
    Step 4
This step will erase all your settings in the Network preference pane. Make a note of them before you begin, and recreate them afterwards. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

What if I do not want to use IMAP or Exchange?  I do not like being forced to use technology I do not trust.
No, it is not a bug. It is working as designed. And there is noting in the manual that staes you can create folders for a POP account.
You do know that any email sent through a POP account stays on the provider's server (often for years) even if you delete it from your inboxes, right? Completely beyond your control. Refusing to use an IMAP service doesn't protect you from anything.

What really cheeses me off here is that Apple isn't allowing users enough customization.  With each update of iTunes (and the OS and iOS) we're forced to give up something that worked well for the way we want to use the app and make do with fewer (and lamer) options.  If Apple keeps this up, they're going to start losing customers fast.  I mean if this isn't fixed soon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on iTunes, and then I'll probably go ahead and get a Galaxy when I need to replace my iPhone.
What I don't understand about how they won't let users delete the list of available podcasts now is why?  How is this making it a better program?  I can understand that not all users are capable enough to right-click on a feed and select "Show all available episodes", so I can see why they want the complete list to be the default (and, surprise, it already was).  But to not give users the option to delete that list?  It's inconsiderate because it makes navigating feeds with a large back catalogue really frustrating.  I'm flabbergasted that no one at Apple considered all the podcast feeds that keep hundreds of episodes available when they removed this feature.  It smacks of rank incompetence.
What improvement were they trying to make here anyway?  There was nothing wrong to my mind about how podcasts were managed in previous versions.  Whatever improvement they were trying to make here, they should have realized that many users would at least want the option to keep things the way they were.
And reverting to a previous version is no solution.  I can't sync my iPhone with the new iOS without this update, and (while I do have some issues--specifically how you can't play podcasts in the Music app anymore) I do like the new iOS.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
