60W charger for 15 inch Macbook Pro?

Hi, it is finals time and my 85W Macbook Pro charger has just decided to quit on me. My friend is selling her 60W charger that she uses on her 13 inch Macbook Pro...can I buy it and use it on my 15 inch one?
Thanks!

Hi collegegirl,
The earlier MBPs, like yours, have a separate Graphics Processing Unit that adds to the power draw when compared with the current "base model" 15" 2.53 model that comes with the 60W power supply. The newer computers also have a reduced power load in other areas, too.
I've run my own older SantaRosa 15" on 60W power adaptors on various occasions (more by accident than deliberate decision - we have several of both varieties in the house) and nothing untoward has happened, but they are likely to heat up a little more than an 85W when used on an "85W" computer, and your battery may also be "called on" to supply extra power on occasion, even when the charger is connected.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2346 has some advice, and lists the adaptors appropriate for different MBPs.
So, in short, though the solution probably seems appealing to you both, it is not really a good idea, I'm afraid.
Cheers
Rod

I searched for docs and specs but can't seem to come with anything. Does the wall charger for a 17" macbook pro work on my new Macbook Pro?

Well, obviously you have NO faith in me or you wouldn't ask.
Go to the Apple Store online. Search for laptop power products and look for Apple's replacement AC adaptors. One is the 60 watt model for MacBooks. The other is the 85 watt adaptor - now read this very carefully because it's in smaller, lighter print - which says for 15" and 17" MacBook Pros. Will you take Apple's word?

  • Charging Time for 15 inch MacBook Pro Retina

If I were to use a 60 watt charging adaptor that comes with the 13 inch MacBook Pro with Retina display instead of the 85 watt adaptor that comes with the 15 inch model to charge a 15 inch model, how much longer will it take to recharge the computer, and, will it both recharge and power the computer while it is recharging?

There are a number of 12V chargers available for the MBP but I prefer to use a 12V Inverter which allows me to use the provided chargers for my laptops and IOS devices both in-car and whilst out sailing.

  • Transparent Hard Case For 15 inch MacBook Pro

OMG this is so cool, im going to get one for my other lap top :D!
    http://gavilan1010.wordpress.com/2006/10/14/transparent-hard-case-for-15-inch-ma cbook-pro-2/

    Hi Everyone,
I am one of the engineers at Speck involved in designing and launching the MacBook See Thru Case. Thank you for your interest and feedback regarding this product. However, after reading through this discussion page, I feel it is necessary to dispel some misconceptions about this case. We are a case company that has been designing, engineering and selling cases for years. I'm not sure which Agent 18 case (great cases by the way) is being referred to in the previous thread, but without knowing the exact case, I am assuming there are inherent differences in the mounting system used. Specifically the following:
    1. The "Sandpaper effect" occurs when two surfaces rub against each other. In the example with the ipod case, I believe (and because I don’t know which case it is, I can be wrong) that the scratching was a result of the ipod sliding into the case, or sleeve. Typically hard PC cases have tight tolerances, which leave a minimal amount of clearance. Because of this, the ipod is more likely to be scratched when inserted into the case. However, unlike the ipod case example, the Macbook case clips onto the MacBook. Instead of a sliding motion, the MacBook See Thru is a snap on and lift off system. Also, because the See Thru is clipped onto the Macook, it is a static system, thus no surfaces would be moving against each other.
    2. More importantly, we designed the MacBook See Thru with small spacers that keep a minimal distance between the surface of the See Thru and the MacBook. This means that unlike the Ipod case that sits against the surface of the Ipod, the MacBook See Thru maintains uniform clearance.
Lastly, from a consumer standpoint, and user of many, many different CE devices, I am always hesitant to use adhesive films on my products. In my experience, they tend to leave a residue, which is sometimes difficult to get off, and makes your device have a higher affinity for dirt. This is not to say that all films are created equal (because there are some companies that have engineered them not to leave as much of a residue). Also, films tend to scratch and rip easier. Please remember that there may be some bias in my comments (being a Speck engineer that has been so involved in this project), so take them at your own discretion. But don't take my word for it, go out to the Apple Store and check them out for yourself. I think you won't be disappointed.

  • 3D Modelling Capability for 13-inch Macbook Pro

In the fall I will be attending University for Nanotechnology Engineering and am looking to buy a new laptop. This program will have basic to complex programming, as well as 3D modelling and simulations. Is the Iris graphics GPU, and the intel 2.6GHz CPU good enough for these tasks?

Whichever backpack you get make sure:
    1. The computer is padded with at least an inch of foam padding on all 6 sides.
    2. The straps are set so that not matter what you put in your bag, your back does not hurt lifting it up.
    3. Test your bag with some books of a typical weight to see if it might get too heavy.
    4. Make sure the books and power adapter are OUTSIDE the foam protection.
    5. Make sure that the screen has no chance of jamming into the keyboard.
    6. Shut down your Mac before transporting it. There have been reports of closed lids still resulting in a Mac waking from sleep, and overheating the Mac. Also the potential exist that a jarring action if it is awake unknowingly to cause a hard drive head crash. While normally it shouldn't happen since the sudden motion sensor can prevent such things, it isn't a perfect means of preventive medicine.
    7. Don't let any loose filaments or pencil lead, or other small particles get inside the foam cover. Clear it carefully of all debris when removing the notebook.
    8. Always lay the backpack so that the computer is on top of any books, and not underneath them, as the pressure might be enough to get through the foam, and hurt the computer.
    9. Make sure the bag is never left unattended for even a second, unless you are in a secure place that only you have access to. Same with the notebook.
    10. Don't make it obvious that it is a computer bag. Black bags are especially obvious.
    Good luck!

  • What is best non-apple display for 15 inch macbook pro with retina display?

I am looking for a good and reasonably priced monitor to use with my MBP retina.  I prefer one that rotates 90 degrees for portrait viewing. Any suggestions?
What adapter is needed to get good quality?  Is the dual link adapter worth $100?  Is it very much clearer than DVI?  How does the HDMI connection compare?  I've heard that HDMI only works as an external display in clamshell mode (computer closed).  Does HDMI transmit sound and video or would I need two cords?
    Thanks for any help!

The dual-link adapter is needed only for resolutions over 1920 x 1200.  It won't improve the picture of lower resolution displays.
HDMI carries audio and video (up tp 1920 x 1200).
DVI (single or dual-link) is video only.
Mini DisplayPort (or DisplayPort with an adapter cable) is audio and video (up to 2560 x 1600).
All will give the same picture quality.

  • Do Apple still sell batteries for 13-Inch Macbook Pros?

Macbook was purchased in Mid-2010 and has finally died. Can I buy a new one or do I have to go to a genius bar to get it replaced?

You can buy from Apple if you want an Apple "branded" battery, or you can buy one and install it yourself from sources such as ifixit, PowerbookMedic, or OWC.
    Good luck,

Oh ok didn't know that. In that case if you really want anti glare screen you can get an anti glare film which you apply on your screen. They're not that expensive, take a look on the internet (http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/backstage/comments/matte-your-aluminum-macbook- 13-screen-a-matching-macbook-stand/)

  • Macbook Pro 60w charger for 15inch

I am using my 2011 15 inch Macbook Pro right now, left my charger at home and am not able to retrieve it right now. I have to get some work done so I am using a friends 60W charger that they actually use for their late 2008 model 15inch Macbook Pro. I have read that it will work but the charging takes longer and it may not charge it fully. But I just want to make sure that it wont be doing any serious damage to my laptop. This thing cost waaay too much money to just let it get messed up over something so small. If anyone has had any experience using a lower wattage charger on a higher wattage machine please let me know your experience. I see it as not doing harm as its only under powering the machine, not over powering. Where I would feel unsafe using a 85W on a 13inch that takes a 60W charger as you could fry it from overcharge. Thanks in advance.
    -Brandon

There's no danger charging your 2011 MBP with a 60w cable. You won't fry your laptop, but charging will take longer. Doing the other way around has far greater risks, however.
If you're bullish about safety, why don't you charge from the MagSafe charger, and use the MBP using the internal battery?

If you're unable to turn it on, let alone even charge it then it definitely sounds like a battery issue to me. I'd wait for someone else to reply just to be sure but I think somehow the battery by the sounds of it must have died. However, I could be very wrong.
If you're still under applecare which you should be then it should be an easy free fix. Hope this helps!

  • Can anyone recommend a case/bag for a 17-inch Macbook Pro?

I just received my 17-inch Macbook Pro (the latest model) last week and I am now looking for a carry case or bag big enough to fit it in.
    The case/bag must have/be:
    Waterproof.
    In a style for men.
Have an over the shoulder strap (or hooks for one).
No indication that the bag contains a Macbook Pro (which would be an advertisement for thieves).
A pocket big enough for at least the charger.
Available at a UK based store/website.
    Thanks in advance!

Picked up my bag shortly after I purchased a 17" MacBook Pro.
Swissgear Ibex.  Quite literally one of the best made laptop bags I have ever seen, truly reflects quality with eas of use, price wise a little on the high end, but if you intend to move around with a £2500 macbook, this really is a great option.   Slightly bigger than just a laptop / charger, but with empty pockets its really not that big at all.
--- As I was typing this I checked amazon, price has come down drastically since I bought my bag, now around £50. Bargain.
