6110 notes: Route 66 and Nokia Map (Smartogo) in a...

Hi,
Just sharing some observations after trying out the two maps for navigation in a city.
a) Responsiveness: Route66 is definitely more responsive in re-routing once you drive off the recommended route. It typically provide new directive immediately, whereas Nokia map will take a couple of seconds for recalculations.
b) Quality of re-route: When a route is missed, Route66 seems to provide more 'human-like' new route. Whereas, Nokia Map seems to work on partial re-route, and try to find the "next possibility" with the objective to make a "U-turn" to get back to the previous calculated route. The difference is important in real life, since making U-turns in an un-familiar location can be dangerous, but more importantly, can dis-orientate most people who are not adept in navigation in the first place. So, Route66 seems to be smarter than 'smartogo' on this respect.
c) User interface: Nokia Map (smartogo) seems to be lacked of the short-cut keys that Route66 already provice (such as key 5, 6 etc). Also, the satellite info page seems rudimental.
However, the screen layout of the Nokia Map seems more useful than Route66, but Route66 has more fancy graphics. So, it is clear that Route66 has been optimised for novice in navigation, making it as easy as possible.
d) Voice navigation: Route66 seems to be straight-to-the-point, i.e. clear instruction. Nokia Map tends to be a bit more chatty and delayed. For example, quite frequently, it would say "next possibility", which is useless, except seems to project to me that it is not sure. Also, by the time it finished saying 'possibility', you already missed the turn out.
When one is on the road and decide to rely on the voice navigation, just tell me what to do at the right time, cut out the sweet talks.
e) Landmark management. This one, Nokia Map is definitely one up.
Well, it seems that Route66 is the way to go at this point since it seems a more mature product. However, I think Nokia Map has many tricks up the sleeves, it seems, especially in terms of integration with other applications.
I still love google map for the satellite view, nothing can beat having a preview of the terrain of the route one selects. However, this is not for everybody, I admit.

I find Route66 also tends to keep trying to send me back to the route it initially calculated for far too long after I've diverted off - usually to avoid traffic jams.
The one feature I would really like on Route66 - and which I always assumed would be in any routing software - is a "find me another route that avoids this road" option. Can't understand why that one isn't available as the code that handles the real time traffic data could easily be adapted to do it.

  • Ovi maps and Nokia Maps

I have recently downloaded the ovi maps update for free navigation on my 5800 however now I seem to have 2 programs in my installed apps menu, Ovi maps and Nokia maps. This is causing me some problems as my phones built in memory is now completely full and I am unable to do some things as I have ran out of on phone memory space. Which one is the main map software? And also can I uninstall one? If not then can it be installed on a MSD card and if yes how?

As far as I can determine Ovi maps is the mapping software (program) which installs to C (phone memory) and Nokia maps is the map data that you have loaded which I believe are installed to E (mass memory).
I can confirm that you do need both installed.
The problem as far as I can see is that the previous maps versions 3.01 is built into the current firmware (v20 for N97 - not sure for 5800) and installing maps 3.03 does not remove or overwrite the earlier version so you end up with both versions installed and thus the extra memory footprint.
This will remain a problem until a newer firmware is released which will hopefully have maps 3.03 (or later depending when next firmware is released) thus reducing the extra 9 megs or so used.
    Hope this answers your question

  • N97 FM Transmitter is not working in nokia maps

Hi. I don't know if this topic was already discussed here. I didn't find it.
If I have activate the fm-transmitter in my car and nokia maps is running as well, the output of the music comes over the radio, but the output voice of nokia maps comes over the phone. If any advise comes from nokia maps, the connections interrupt via fm-transmitter completly. During the time of the nokia maps advise both, music and nokia maps, sending the sound via phone. Is there any possibility to avoid that problem? Thanks for any help.

This feature is not currently supported by Nokia Maps. (despite it being included in the previous versions of Ovi Maps)
Many Betalabs Users have been requesting this feature for a long time.
To add your support, please join nokia beta labs (if not already) and support the following post:
    http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-maps-suite-2-0/suggestion/48288/voice-navigation-over-fm-transm...
It is interesting to note that somewhere in the Nokia chain this request has been denied. I have suggested a petition from us (users) may give the Nokia development team the support they need to gain approval for this.

  • Why have not pre-installed Nokia map in my nokia 5...

    Hi everybody:
I come from Taiwan. I bought a nokia 5220 in my country but I found my phone have not pre-installed Nokia map. It's look like usually in my country. I browsed many websites they mentioned that Nokia 5220 has pre-installed "Nokia map" in the device in Europe. Does this application disabled in my country or something else?
ps. I have checked Menu > Organiser > but it doesn't have "Maps".
    ps2. device informations: software v4.86
    RM411
Can anyone suggest me how to lanch it or install it? Thanks a lot! "

You can install the portable Firefox 3.6.x version, that comes with its own profile, to access websites that do not work with Firefox 5+.
    *http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable/localization#legacy36
You probably need to create a new profile because the SQLite version used in Firefox 3.5 is not compatible the the SQLite version that is used by current Firefox versions.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Transferred route from Nokia Maps to phone not the...

I planed a route on the Nokia Maps site with a couple of waypoints and some options (no toll roads, no motorways) to get it the way I wanted.
Then I did the synchronization of favorites on the phone and the route was there. But when I tried to open the route on the phone the "Calculating route" message appears and the route that shows up is COMPLETELY different from the one on the Nokia Maps: different roads, strange ways to get to the waypoints, ... In short I can not use this route on the phone as I would like.
Is there a way to transfer complete route AS IS from Nokia Maps to the phone Maps application?

Well I don't get it - why is there a need to do the route calculation twice? I would expect that once the route is calculated on a PC (including the directions) it would be transferred in some kind of way to the device as is (like transferring gpx files to the GPS device).
Anyway, even if it is so that the device recalculate the route once again I really don't understand why the same route gets completely different shape on the device then on the PC/Web. One would expect the calculation from the same provider (Nokia Maps) yields the same results regardless of where it is executed.

  • CK-300 CarKit , CarMenu and Nokia Maps 3.0 on New ...

I'm going to post here as someone may be able to suggest something....
There are so many threads on the CK-300 and this is yet one more to cover latest software releases.
    Here is the setup:
    1. I have the CK-300 CarKit with latest v1.5 CarKit software flashed.
    2. I have the CarMenu with the latest v2.6 software
    3. I have the latest version of Nokia Maps 3.0 installed on the new 6710 Navigator.
    Here are the problems:
    Problem Number One
I cannot get voice guidance when Nokia Maps is running. The ONLY way I can get voice guidance to come through the CK-300 CarKit is by selecting "Music Player Mode" in the CarMenu application and starting a music track playing (or paused).
    > Does anyone else have this issue?
    > Is there something I am missing?
Events are set to ALL in the CarMenu settings!! As discussed in other threads.
    Problem Number Two
The volume level of Maps 3.0 Voice Navigation through the CK-300 is Very Low despite the volume turned up to maximum in the Maps 3.0 application. If I play a track in "Music Player Mode" in CarMenu the volume through the CK-300 is just fine (and MUCH louder). There is an in-balance in volume between the two sources of audio.
    > Is there a way to further boost ONLY the voice navigation volume when navigating with Maps 3.0?
This difference in audio volume is quite annoying if you want to listen to music and voice navigation at the same time.
Any help much appreciated as ever. Hope this makes sense.
    Jon

    Dear jonphelps,
firstly, may I guide you to CarMenu version 2.8 beta which is actually the latest. (Maybe, it is not so clearly stated on our pages.)
You will also find it also on CarMenu (below sections concerning version 2.6) and Nokia 6710 Navigator has been tested compatible (apologies if it not yet mentioned there).
Moreover, may I ask how your car kit is connected to the car stereo system? We recommend the following:
Use CK-300 with CarMenu and connect music output of hands-free unit to AUX input for car stereo system.
    - If music player is not running on phone than navigation prompts are routed to the telephony line, i.e. depending on settings (see below) the CRM (Car Radio Mute) will be activated to make navigation audible through the stereo system.
    - Setting in CarMenu should be set to "All audio events" to activate CRM for phone calls, SMS indications and navigation prompts.
    - In case music is played on phone assumingly AUX is connected, too; i.e. in this case navigation prompts are routed to the music output; assuming that AUX is selected to listen to music from mobile device navigation prompts are also audible.
    I hope this helps further.
    Best regards,
    smarty

  • Ovi Maps and Nokia Maps - do I need both?

I am sure this question has been asked already but I cannot find it having spent some time doing a search.
The question is do I need both or can I dispense with one? If so, with what consequences?
The position is that I tried to update Ovi maps but couldn't because there was insufficient space on drive C, so I thought I would delete it and then I would be able to install the new version. Unfortunately wrong again - still insufficient space on drive C. Hence my question - do I need both maps? Life would be easier just with Nokia maps in the circumstances.

Thanks. Can I take it that Nokia Maps is pre-installed? Would I be correct in concluding that I can delete Ovi Maps to save space and just update Nokia Maps from time to time?
If Nokia Maps is not updated from time to time I would need to install Ovi Maps to keep up-to-date?
I have I think deleted Ovi Maps but I still have Maps. In fact I am fairly certain I have all the maps I downloaded from OVi Maps. When I run Maps the screen refers to "Ovi Maps". Perhaps I haven't uninstalled Ovi Maps at all although the programme said that I had! Perhaps it is Ovi Maps that is pre-installed.
Sorry but I remain confused and hope I can through this tread clear it up once and for all.

  • Big Headache with N70 and nokia maps

I have recently come accross nokia maps and i think it is such an excelent idea. But when i was following the steps on how to get downloaded maps on to my n70 i hit a big brick wall. Suposedly i need to put my phone into data mode, and as i have found that is not an option. I also know that i would work if i had a mmc card reader. unfortunately i dont.
so is there any type of work around for this problem.
plz help as i am not the only 1 with this problem

or even better intergrate this into pc suit so that no matter how it is connected. you will always be able to use maps. Nokia have an excelent idea here but they havn't quite got it right. SO TO THE NOKIA PEOPLE OUT THERE, ANSWER THE EMAILS I SENT YOU OR POST SOMETHING ON THIS TOPIC plz

  • CityExplorer (Guides) not available in Nokia Maps ...

    Hi,
I upgraded my N95 to Nokia Maps 3.0.
Downloaded the latest Nokia Map Loader (3.0). But there I can't download any Services as in the old Map Loader.
There are no Global guides from Lonely Planet, Michelin, and WCities possible to download, as described in on the Nokia Maps homepage.
    CityExplorer Services
I have purchased a 2 years licens for CityExplorer. But anyway, it's not possible to download with Noka Map Loader 3.0.
Downloaded Nokia Map Loader 2.0.2 instead, there the folder "Services" is still available. But when I click on that, it always tells me:
Connection to the map server has been interruped. Make sure your Internet connection is working and retry. If you are still unable to download, try again later."

All right. So with POI you mean for example the petrol stations, restaurants, or shopping centers near my position?
I find them when I select "Explore" in the Map 3.0 menu.
Also, when I click on "Show Detail" at my current possion, or at one of the POI's I can select, and I have the internet connection online at that moment, then I will see the actuall weather information for this place.
The same when I click on the places I have saved under "Favorits". When I click on "show details", then I see the weather information about this point. (when Internet connection is on). - Nice!
But anyway, I'm missing the "Lonely Planet & Michelin" guides. Also I haven't found the "WCities entertainment" yet, described in in the link I posted in my previous post. Maybe it's only available for a few cities.

  • N80 and Nokia Map...

    Hi,
Any body knows if Nokia Map services are intended to be available for N80 in the nearest future?

You can use Nokia Maps for N73 on your N80. Download from here: http://europe.nokia.com/A4509291
That will only give you the map application and NOT location information. To get location (GPS) information on the N80 you will need to purchase and external GPS receiver. I use the Nokia LD-3W for my N80.
I'll interest why N73 is compatible with N80?
I have a N80 and HOLUX M-1200 GPS. This GPS worked with some apps but not with my version of Nokia Maps, I will try the N73 version.
I tried various apps, with different results (N80 talking to the GPS):
LOCR: N80 OK to start, then stops talking via BT.
    TrekBuddy: Works OK.
NavFun: N80 OK to start, then stops talking via BT (restart BT).
    etc

  • N95 v12 and Nokia Maps.

    Hi.
I made a "mistake" just after I got my N95 and updated the Maps program. Not the entire firmware since it's not avaliable for my phone yet, just the maps program.
Now I've understood that I used to have the tracking feature before I updated, I don't have that now.
If I run the 12.0.013 update again, will I get the original version of Maps with tracking back?

  • N78 FM-Transmitter and Nokia Maps

Should FM-Transmitter also be used with Nokia Maps driving instructions?
I'm a bit annoyed when FM transmitter stops when Nokia Maps has something to say. I listen to audio books quite alot and this produces some skips that I would not want.

Nokia N78 has FM Transmitter Antenna fixed at the inside of battery cover (back cover). If this battery cover is not placed propperly the antenna will not come in contact with circuit points .So do following tests
    1. Open the back cover and check if the antenna is in tact . You can find the antenna mounted inside of the back cover. This antenna is so thin that it is covered or sealed with a film for shilding purpose. So it usually does not
get spoiled unless we dont play with it.
    2.Replace the cover back.
3.Switch off the phone and restart
4.Check if it  shows transmitting at frequency--and a small transmitting icon is displayed at the right top corner .
    5. Still if you are not getting the transmission then you may  have to replace the back cover with orginal one.

  • N73 and Nokia maps/smart2go

Wondering if anyone can shed any light on this! Loaded nokia maps on my N73 no problem - get the loading globe, gets to 100% then get a blank map screen - just all yellow with no map loaded on. The data transfer in the bottom left gets up to about 20mb then I give up - how much data can it take to transfer the first map?! any ideas?..... don't have a gps device connected to it.

once u have the maps application on ur fone you can then download the nokia maploader to ur pc, that in turn downloads the maps to ur pc then u transfer it to ur fone to save on data costs
if you download a map using the map loader on your pc once u have the map on your memory card then it is there permanently, unless u delete it! but if u dont download the map to the memory card, every time you open the map application on ur handset the map needs to re-download via GPRS/3G which incurs huge data costs
if you do it the latter way you will find the map will stop downloading when it reaches a certain level, press the zoom in buttom and and it will download more detail, the further u zoom in the more will download
if you zoom in and nothing happens then u need to enable the data to allow it to download the maps
You do not need a GPS device to use it purely as a map, u only need a GPS unit if you want full function navigationMessage Edited by tweets on 06-Aug-200710:58 PM

  • E71 and Nokia Maps

I am trying to compare the 2 Satnav systems on my phone......
Vodafone SatNav gives me 18 month subscription with voice navigation
Nokia Maps giives me 3 month subscription withOUT voice nav. (I am only a week or so into the 3 months)
If I go to download voice it prompts me to pay but doesnt say how much ??
Isnt there voice trial ubscription ??

The next time you try, when you get the prompt to pay, just click on the update option. All Nokia Subscriptions come with voice and so should yours. ALl you need to do is to update your license details by clicking on the update option.
You have to be online to allow Nokia Maps to access the license server when doing this.

  • N8 default photo viewer and Nokia Maps

With the E52, I can view a photo (with geotag) with the default photo viewer. Select "Option/Show on Maps" and it will automatically opens up Nokia Maps showing where that photo was taken. And to navigate to that place.
With the N8 photo viewer, there isn't any such option. Is there any apps that could do that? Thanks

Seems it works the same way that on Nokia 5800xm as mentioned here ...
