6140 Firmware Best Practice

Hi,
We have a pair of 6140s with volumes mirrored by Veritas and have a requirement to upgrade the firmware to the latest version. Both are live and hosting mission critical application data. Ideally we want to keep the application running.
I have conflicting advice as to whether to quiece I/O to the storage. I have upgraded firmware of other vendors storage with only a proviso of minimizing it not stopping it. Service advisor is vague to say the least :)
Is there a best practice document detailing best practice/procedure for a 6140 firmware upgrade or can anyone give their experiences of upgrading live arrays?
Thanks in advance.

In summary:
Controller FW: online upgrade
IOM FW: online upgrade
Drive FW: offline upgrade (which means, IO have to be stopped at 100%)

  • Firmware Best practices

Any suggestions on best practices for firmware upgrading. Currently using a combination of SF200 switches (SF200-48, SF200-24, SF200-24P, SF200-24FP), WAP561, and WAP321. The question is should I step the updates from the current to the most recent or can I just update to newest release?

    Hello,
For the switches please bear in mind the following upgrade steps:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/12321266/firmware-upgrade-troubleshooting-300-and-500-series-managed-switches
Please note that with boot code 1.3.5.06 there are quite important change in file system so before proceeding to 1.4.0.88 you will have to upgrade switch to 1.3.7 firmware not boot code 1.3.5.06.
For the access points it is not the same case however please always check release notes of the latest firmware for special instructions.

  • Best practices for network design on WLC 2504 and 5508

    Dear all:
I'm looking for some recommendations on WLC 2504 and 5508 about the the following:
Maximum amount of AP per port
The scenario when to use all ports in both WLC
Maximum number of clients(users) per port
Bandwidth comsumption of  management vs data in order to assign one port for management
    I've just found this:
Cisco 5508 controllers have eight Gigabit Ethernet distribution system ports, through which the controller can manage multiple access points. The 5508-12, 5508-25, 5508-50, 5508-100, and 5508-250 models allow a total of 12, 25, 50, 100, or 250 access points to join the controller. Cisco 5508 controllers have no restrictions on the number of access points per port. However, Cisco recommends using link aggregation (LAG) or configuring dynamic AP-manager interfaces on each Gigabit Ethernet port to automatically balance the load. If more than 100 access points are connected to the 5500 series controller, make sure that more than one gigabit Ethernet interface is connected to the upstream switch.
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/6-0/configuration/guide/Controller60CG/c60mint.html
    Thanks for your help.

    The 5508-12, 5508-25, 5508-50, 5508-100, and 5508-250 models allow a total of 12, 25, 50, 100, or 250 access points to join the controller.
This is an old document.  5508 can now support up to 500 APs if you run firmware 7.X.  2504 can support up to 75 APs if you run firmware 7.4.X.
I'm looking for some recommendations on WLC 2504 and 5508 about the the following:
Best practice and recommendation is to LAG all ports so you will be able to form a link redundancy.  If one link goes down, you have other link to push traffic.

  • Auto-Anchor Controller's Best Practice

    Hi All,
I got confused with this setup. I have 2 Wlc's.One is the internal controller and another one configured for the anchor controller (different subnet-DMZ zone) for guest traffic. Where do i configure DHCP assignment for this users..? Should Production controller intervine in this dhcp process or shall i direct to Anchor to take care of everything..? which is recommended ?
And also any best practice doc is available for this ..?
    Please help...
    thanks in advance.

    Prasan,
Just keep in mind that there are best practices that are published and best practices that you learn from experience. Being a consultant, I get to implement wireless in various networks and everyone's network is quite different. Also code versions can change a best practice because of bug issues or how a standard might of changed and how that standard was implemented in code. The biggest best practice secret is really working with various client devices, scanner's, laptops, smartphones, etc., and seeing how those change because of newer models and it firmware updates. It's amazing to understand how some devices will require a few checkboxes in the WLAN to be disabled compared to others. Even with anchoring for guest and using a custom WebAuth to make sure the splash page works with various types of browsers.
What I can say is to always try the defaults if possible when you have issues and then enable things one by one.

But there is a slight difference here with my situation:
-- I'm planning to upgrade from 3.1.2 to 4.2.1, yet in that thread the guy was trying to upgrade from 4.1
And recently a friend told me he had an error 1013 during upgrade. Google also mentioned another error code, 1015, related to upgrading to 4.2.1
    1. Does anyone know what exactly caused Error 1013 and 1015?
    2. what is the best practice to upgrade from 3.1.2? Upgrading to 4.1 first and then upgrade from 4.1 to 4.2.1? Will that eliminate the occurring of these itunes errors?

  • Mobile Me & Best Practice

I may be the only one here but i philosophically see all iOS firmware as work in progress but one none the less that leads from the front. In saying this i wish to make known and get feedback from others of my thinking on best practice for the Mobile Me function that Apple has kindly made free:
It is of vital importance that legal owners of the iPhone have a _password lock_ on their hardware. If not then a dishonest person just needs to turn the Find My iPhone function off under the Mail setting; this would be easily overlooked otherwise and make the feature redundant.
Am I right in this assessment? Do others concur?

Actually, a passcode is unnecessary, you simply need a restrictions password, and to disable the changing of accounts.
And to address @cyclone34's point, if you have physical access to a device, then yes, you can totally override everything. As some of the greatest hackers (and anti-hackers) have stated, there are many arguments over how to make something secure and anti-hackable, but the number one agreed upon way to ensure not letting your information fall into the wrong hands is to not allow physical access by anyone except yourself.
Some may attempt to negate his point by stating that if the phone is introduced to a new computer and the iPhone has a passcode lock on it, you'll need the passcode to sync. Well, yes, but you can put the iPhone into DFU mode, to override this.

  • Airport Extreme best practice configuration for Sleep Proxy, DHCP/NAT and PPPOE

    Hi
I have recently bought a Airport Extreme and it is working well.  One of the reasons I bought is to take advantage of the Bonjour Sleep Proxy on it so I can wake my MAC up remotely from my iPad using the REMOTE app to stream things like iTunes etc...  I followed the set up instructions and basically let it configure itself.  I have an ISP router / modem which currently is providing DHCP services, NAT and PPPOE.
The Airport detected all of this and set itself up as bridge only.  The speed of the network outo to the internet is fine (more or less what it was before).  However, in doing a bit of research, I have found out that if I want the Airport to act as a sleep proxy, I need it to "host" the network.  I am not an expert in networking but from what I understand I need the Airport to be moved from "Bridge Only" to at least be providing DHCP to my internal network clients.
This has prompted me to ask what is "Best practice" when it comes to configuring the Airport given I want to have Sleep Proxy enabled.  I think the two options I have are as follows but would really welcome feedback on which is the best option to go for or if there are other options I should be thinking of
    (1)  Have the Airport perform DHCP for my internal clients and leave the ISP router/modem doing NAT
    (2)  Have the Airport perform DHCP and NAT.  I think to do this I need to turn the ISP router / modem into Bridge mode only.  (I've looked and I seem to have this option on the device.  It's an Irish ISP branded device but I think it is a Zyxel)
I have no reason to believe the ISP router / model is doing a bad job but given I understand the Airport Extreme is a reasonably high-end device (I think?) I am wondering if option 2 is the way to go.
In addition, during my research, I have also discovered that many people seem to have their Airport Extreme also handle PPPOE.  This is currently being done by my ISP router/modem.  I am  inclined to leave it this way (following the mantra if it isn't broken, don't fix it) but if there was a good reason to have the Aiport do this, perhaps I should make the switch?  Having said this, I have seen on this forum and others, some posts about problems with Internet connection drops when the Airport is handling PPPOE.
So, a bit of a long post, but if anyone has any information or perspective on this, I'd very much appreciate it.
    Thanks
    Dave

I forgot to thank you, John Galt. Yap, it solve my problem by restoring back the original firmware to 7.6.1. My unit is Airport Extreme 2012. I am still using double NAT because I cannot figure it out on how to set DHCP only in the Network tab.
My goal it to use the airport extreme to the internet and to share the internet to all my devices in the house. Just like my previous Accesspoints. Before I use AP+router Linksy$ WRT54G and D-l!nk DIR-655 without activating the NAT to share my internet connection and they work.
My problem is that when I set it to DHCP in the internet tab and DHCP in the Network tab in Airport Utility inorder to solve the double NAT situation, only one of all my devices (wired or wireless) can connect to the internet. Each time I connect the other device(s) to the internet my subscriber will verify my subscription (web browser based verification) in which I have to manually enter my account number, etc to validate my subscription.
So I stick to double NAT so that I can share the internet
Our broadband provider uses DHCP to link us to the internet. If I change the settings to Static in the Internet Tab, my broadband provider will not let me connect to the internet. In the Airport Utility if I set to static in the Internet Tab inorder to set it to solve the double NAT, a message box appear informing me that I have invalid beginning IP address in the DCHP range in the Network Tab when it appears that only the last 3 digits of the DHCP range is editable.
Is there any way of configuring the Airport Utility's Internet TAB to DHCP and Network TAB to DHCP to connect to the internet with all my devices without the double NAT and without the aid of another device such as AP or router or switch connected to the Airport or vice versa?

  • Secure my laptop Best Practice idea requests

My MacBook was stolen with all my personal information unencrypted last month and I now have a new 13 inch MacBookPro. I would like some Best Practice recommendations for securing the data within my user account. Is there a BIOS level password option on the Apple laptops?
Any thoughts on Identity theft? LoJackforLaptops software tracking? Is Apple's encryption of the home directory stable enough to use routinely and how does it affect back up of data and recovery of data? How about online backup...Mozy vs Carbonite or Others. I had Mozy and it seems that much less data was actually available to recover than I had thought.

RE encryption, eww is correct - that's the only way to protect your data. Competent individuals (Kappy, eww, and me, for example), could defeat the firmware password protection and your strong admin password in a matter of minutes. A competent thief +who was interested in your data+ would be able to do so as well (most just want the hardware, of course).
I do agree that FileVault is not the best solution here (I sometimes refer to it as FileFault - there's an inherent risk in having all of your data in a single, huge, encrypted file). I see no need to encrypt iTunes music, my personal photos, etc. Instead, consider creating an encrypted disk image for your sensitive personal data (again with a strong password, and UNcheck the box to store the password in the keychain!).

  • Upgrading ldom 1.0.1 to ldom 1.0.3. Steps and best practices?

I have a guest domain running on ldm 1.0.1. I want to upgrade to 1.0.3 on the control domain. The administration guide states that I don't have to go through a lot of gyrations to do the upgrade but it is unclear what is the best practice to upgrade from 1.0.1 to 1.0.3
    What are the actual steps
Can I just pkgadd -d . SUNWldm.v and magic happens or do I need to remove the current SUNWldm and then do the pkgadd?
Should I use the procedures laid out for install-ldm -d none
It's unclear to me what the actual upgrade path is. If I was running 1.0 the procedures are laid out in the guide but I don't see the steps that I should take to go from 1.0.1 to 1.0.3?
Thanks to anyone that can provide the best practice here....

I just upgraded from 1.0.2 to 1.0.3 and it was just a case of removing the old version and installing the new. As a precaution best to save the constraints info to an xml file for each ldom including the primary.
Make sure that you are running the required firmware and OS kernel patches as per the Release Notes
    Shutdown the guest ldoms
    # ldm stop -a
    # ldm ls-constaints -x ldm-name > ldm-name.xml
    # svcadm disable ldmd
    # pkgrm SUNWldm
At this point a few dependencies will be flagged up if i.e. SUNWldlibvirt, SUNWldvirtinst etc if they are installed as well. In my case I uninstalled all the dependent packages as well and reinstalled them from the 1.0.3 software bundle.
    # pkgadd -d path-to-1.0.3-sw-bundle-products SUNWldm (plus the others if required)
    # svcadm enable ldmd
    # ldm start -a
    Hope this helps

  • Microsoft best practices for patching a Cluster server

Good morning! I was wondering if you had any web resources (Webcasts) or whitepapers on Microsoft best practices for patching a Cluster server? I will list what I seen online; the third one was very good:
Failover Cluster Step-by-Step Guide: Configuring a Two-Node File Server Failover Cluster
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731844(v=ws.10).aspx

    Patching Windows Server Failover Clusters
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/174799/i

    Hi Vincent!
I assume this step-by-step guide can also be used if you have more then 2 nodes, as long as you make sure majority of nodes are up (and quorum disk is available).
I just had a strange experience during maintenance of 2 nodes (node nr 7 and nr 8) in a 8 node hyper-v cluster R2 SP1 with CSV. I used SCVMM2012 to put the nodes in maintenance mode. (live migrating all resources to other nodes.) I then look in "Failover cluster
manager" to check that the nodes had been "Paused". And yes everything was just fine. I then did windows update and restartet, no problem. But after restart I wanted to run PSP (HP's update utility) to update some more drivers, software etc. During this PSP
update, node nr 02 suddenly failed. This node is not even a HP Blade, so I'm not sure how, but I know network NIC drivers and software where updated from PSP. So my question is:
Does changes in "Network Connections" on nodes in "Pause" mode affect other nodes in the cluster?
The network are listed as "Up" during Pause mode, so the only thing I could think of is that during  PSPs driver/software update, NICs on node 07 and 08 were going down and up differently somehow making Node 02 fail.
So now during maintenance (Vendor driver/software/firmware updates, not MS Patches) I first put the node in "Pause" mode then I stop cluster service, (and change it to disabled) making sure nothing can affect the cluster.

  • Logical level in Fact tables - best practice

    Hi all,
I am currently working on a complex OBIEE project/solution where I am going straight to the production tables, so the fact (and dimension) tables are pretty complex since I am using more sources in the logical tables to increase performance. Anyway, what I am many times struggling with is the Logical Levels (in Content tab) where the level of each dimension is to be set. In a star schema (one-to-many) this is pretty straight forward and easy to set up, but when the Business Model (and physical model) gets more complex I sometimes struggle with the aggregates - to get them work/appear with different dimensions. (Using the menu "More" - "Get levels" does not allways give the best solution......far from). I have some combinations of left- and right outer join as well, making it even more complicated for the BI server.
For instance - I have about 10-12 different dimensions - should all of them allways be connected to each fact table? Either on Detail or Total level. I can see the use of the logical levels when using aggregate fact tables (on quarter, month etc.), but is it better just to skip the logical level setup when no aggregate tables are used? Sometimes it seems like that is the easiest approach...
Does anyone have a best practice concerning this issue? I have googled for this but I haven't found anything good yet. Any ideas/articles are highly appreciated.

    Hi User,
For instance - I have about 10-12 different dimensions - should all of them always be connected to each fact table? Either on Detail or Total level. It not necessary to connect to all dimensions completely based on the report that you are creating ,but as a best practice we should maintain all at Detail level only, when you are mentioning any join conditions in physical layer
for example for the sales table if u want to report at ProductDimension.ProductnameLevel then u should use detail level else total level(at Product, employee level)
Get Levels. (Available only for fact tables) Changes aggregation content. If joins do not exist between fact table sources and dimension table sources (for example, if the same physical table is in both sources), the aggregation content determined by the administration tool will not include the aggregation content of this dimension.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.
When you install AD DS in the hub or staging site, disconnect the installed domain controller, and then ship the computer to the remote site, you are disconnecting a viable domain controller from the replication topology.

  • Add fields in transformations in BI 7 (best practice)?

    Hi Experts,
I have a question regarding transformation of data in BI 7.0.
    Task:
Add new fields in a second level DSO, based on some manipulation of first level DSO data. In 3.5 we would have used a start routine to manipulate and append the new fields to the structure.
    Possible solutions:
    1) Add the new fields to first level DSO as well (empty)
    - Pro: Simple, easy to understand
    - Con: Disc space consuming, performance degrading when writing to first level DSO
    2) Use routines in the field mapping
    - Pro: Simple
    - Con: Hard to performance optimize (we could of course fill an internal table in the start routine and then read from this to get some performance optimization, but the solution would be more complex).
    3) Update the fields in the End routine
    - Pro: Simple, easy to understand, can be performance optimized
    - Con: We need to ensure that the data we need also exists (i.e. if we have one field in DSO 1 that we only use to calculate a field in DSO 2, this would also have to be mapped to DSO 2 in order to exist in the routine).
Does anybody know what is best practice is? Or do you have any experience regarding what you see as the best solution?
    Thank you in advance,
    Mikael

    Hi Mikael.
I like the 3rd option and have used this many many times.  In answer to your question:-
Update the fields in the End routine
    - Pro: Simple, easy to understand, can be performance optimized  - Yes have read and tested this that it works faster.  A OSS consulting note is out there indicating the speed of the end routine.
    - Con: We need to ensure that the data we need also exists (i.e. if we have one field in DSO 1 that we only use to calculate a field in DSO 2, this would also have to be mapped to DSO 2 in order to exist in the routine). - Yes but by using the result package, the manipulation can be done easily.
    Hope it helps.

  • Temp Tables - Best Practice

    Hello,
I have a customer who uses temp tables all over their application.
This customer is a novice and the app has its roots in VB6. We are converting it to .net
I would really like to know the best practice for using temp tables.
I have seen code like this in the app.
    CR2.Database.Tables.Item(1).Location = "tempdb.dbo.[##Scott_xwPaySheetDtlForN]"
That seems to work, though i do not know why the full tempdb.dbo.[## is required.
However, when i use this in the new report I am doing I get runtime errors.
    i also tried this
    CR2.Database.Tables.Item(1).Location = "##Scott_xwPaySheetDtlForN"
I did not get errors, but I was returned data i did not expect.
Before i delve into different ways to do this, i could use some help with a good pattern to use.
    thanks

    Hi Scott,
Are you using the RDC still? It's not clear but looks like it.
We had an API that could piggy back the HDBC handle in the RDC ( craxdrt.dll ) but that API is no longer available in .NET. Also, the RDC is not supported in .NET since .NET uses the framework and RDC is COM.
Work around is to copy the temp data into a data set and then set location to the data set. There is no way that I know of to get to the tempdb from .NET. Reason being is there is no CR API to set the owner of the table to the user, MS SQL Server locks the tempdb to that user has exclusinve rights on it.
    Thank you
