  • Any guess as to what's wrong with the display? Glows but no image.

Helping a friend with the A1226 (15 inch Macbook pro). LCD is lit (glows), but a few light lines/bars on left side, no real image at all that I can see. Works fine on my external display. I removed the top case, and played with the connections a little to no avail. Techs said $350 to fix, based on prices I see on EBAY for displays, might be a good deal but not sure if that's a starting at $350. I would hate to get something and find out it's not the display though.

Since the external display works without issue, it's more likely to be a problem with the internal display or possibly its cables and connections and not a graphics chip problem.
The LVDS cable is what carries video data, so you want to have a good look at it, checking both for physical damage and to see that it is well seated. Do the same with the inverter cable.
You can probably find a replacement LVDS cable:
    http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Models-A1226-A1260-Displ ay-Data-Cable/IF185-133
It seems to be sold out at the moment, but it may be available from a different source or later on from ifixit. The cable is much less expensive than the display, and may be worth a try.
    Good luck!

  • Java Screen Blanking

    Hi,
Recently I have started having problems when JRE runs.
The screen will go black while Java initialises and then as I mouse over parts of the screen individual icons/pictures/buttons etc re-appear, but not the entire screen. Also a couple of (what I believe are) Java based programs are not working at all. These including Google.Earth and LimeWire no longer work. In fact both those programs I recently installed and have only managed to use each program once. Since then they don't start up properly.
I was running JRE 1.4.2 and have now updated to version 1.5 but have not noticed any change in performance of Java applications.
I have reinstalled both these programs but no change.
I have spoken to some friends who have experienced the same screen blanking issues but mine seem to have gotten worse.
    Any suggestions?
    Chris

    Try the following:
    1. Update Windows DirectX to the latest version.
    2. Update your video drivers to the latest version.
    3. Set your video driver to Application-controlled for Ant-Aliasing and Anisotropic filtering instead of overriding it.

  • After screen replacement, top half of screen starts by looking normal but then fades to black while bottom half stays bright but with images blury. What might went wrong?

A friend recently gave me their old Macbook pro 15 because they broke the screen and the Apple store quoted them $500-600 to fix it. I looked online and bought a screen of ebay for $170 in hopes of fixing it myself. After getting the screen I hooked it up using the steps I found online. Sadly when I turned it on, the top half of the screen was working apparently normally, but then it faded to black. The bottom half stayed bright with color the whole time but the images were always blurred. When I close the screen with it on, then open it after turning the computer on, the top half lights up with my desktop images as if it is working fine but then fades to black. The bottom is still blurred the whole time. What all could be wrong? Display cable, Inverter cable, not registering the screen or something, the screen is bad? I don't now a ton about all this and I have learned most of what I know from online research. I am not sure if I should send the screen back or if there is another issue. I just want to fix this thing.

Unfortunately, you don't even know the lower half of the computer is working properly, because you didn't have it until after it had been abused. So forget the attached screen for the moment. Connect an external monitor to it, fire it up, and see whether you can get a usable image on the external screen. If you can, send the defective "new" screen back for a refund, or replace the LVDS video cable first to make sure that's not where the problem lies, and if it isn't, then resort to sending the screen back. If you can't get a good image on the external, give the junk machine back to your friend and walk away.

    Hi,
I would try a Safe Boot first.  (This will take longer than a normal Boot and you will need to Restart afterwards).
If it were an older OS I would also suggest going to System Preferences > Displays and making sure the display is set to Millions.  (My MacBook Pro does not have this option in Snow Leopard so I did presume Snow Leopard does not have it).
With some laptops there have been some issues with the cable up the back of the screen pulling loose with regular and frequent use of the lid, but this will not apply to you based on your specs.  (it does take time to appear and is also somewhat rare). However it seems enough contact with the camera can make it appear in System Profiler and power it on but not give a pic.
If a Safe Boot does not work I would also try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD (or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
This is actually "less" destructive in that it clears less memory items than Safe Boot but they are different enough to warrant trying.
Do you have an older version of iGlasses installed ?
The one for Leopard does not work for Snow Leopard.
Do you have  Web Browser open ?
This may point to  Google Video Chat Plug-in and Flash Conflict.  It would be rare to allow another app to access the camera even if not displayiong a Pic.
(Chrome Installs the Plug-in as does the standalone download).
Knowing  what "any application" exactly you are trying might help us pin it down.
Any additional downloaded  apps that can use the camera ?
Do you happen to have something balck in front of the camera ?

  • IPod screen illuminates but no image; iPod won't power off

iPod hard drive whirrs and screen illuminates, but no image (text or other) appears. iPod won't power off. iPod is recognized by iTunes only when in disk mode. Multiple restores were useless in restoring the screen function. Tools such as Disk Utility and Disk Warrior verified the directories were satisfactory. Can't locate a hardware diagnostic tool that can diagnose an iPod; and because the screen is malfunctioning, I can't run the iPod's built-in diagnostic routines.
Any solutions, or is this iPod destined for the repair shop?

If your iPod will not power off, unplug it from any power supply and wait for it to run the battery down completely. Then it will power off simply because there is not enough power to keep it running. (It may take 24 hours to do this.) Once this has happened, plug the iPod back into your computer. After about 30 minutes, you should see the "Please wait, very low battery" message. After a while longer, the iPod will have enough power and should reset itself. If not, re-post, but see below.
At the bottom of your post you state that you have a 30GB video iPod. In that case, if you need to re-post, it would be better in the 5th generation iPod forum, (either 5th generation or 5th gen late - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353 for more information) as there will be posts from owners of the same model as you have, and with the same problems.

  • Satellite Pro L40: black screen but faint image in the background

    Satellite Pro L40-17H (PSL4BE-00T005EN)
    Hello,
I would appreciate some help with the following problem:
SYMPTOMS: Screen is black, but I can see that there is a faint image in the background.
I get a good image in external monitor.
I suspect, _among others_, that there may be a faulty *lid sensor/switch*, but I have been unable to locate it, although I have disassembled the unit.
If somebody knows, please let me have the exact *location* where I should look for the switch.
    Thank you

    Thank you RandyRoberts
You are probably right, it is likely that the inverter is faulty, or it might be a bad lamp.
Nevertheless, I cannot exclude the possibility that there is a bad or stuck lid switch. That is why I insist to check that one out as well.
I would still like to know where the lid switch is located on the L40.
    Thanks and regards.

I have an Ipod Classic and currently the screen lights up but no information appears - just a blank back lit screen.Any ideas how to rectify or is it beyond saving?

    Hi mafiose15,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Restoring your iPod to factory settings is the best way to try and get it back to working order. You can use the instructions below to restore it:
    How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
    Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.
You can find the instructions in this article:

ipod touch 4th generation screen light up but the screen is blank. we cannot turn it off. any suggestions?

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • After updating iPod screen is lit, but blank...help!

While I was was updating my iPod, I was prompted to use the iPod updater. Naturally, I followed the directions as I have done in the past. However, after my iPod was updated, the screen went dark. I tried to turn it on, but had no success. Then I tried resetting it. this caused the iPod to make two quick beeping noises followed by a bright lit screen. The screen is lit, but is now just blank. It has been blank for almost an hour now. Yes, I tried the "5 R's" as mentioned in the support part of iPod help menues.
Is there anything I can do? I do have an Apple store 2 blocks away. I can take it there if needed....and it is certainlyh looking like I will need to do just that. Any help that you can give me will be greatly appreciated!
