  • Virtualized servers get stuck at "Shutting down Windows Modules Installer service ..."

    Hi,
I have a Windows 2008 R2 (no service pack) server that has been virtualized last summer and since then:
    - Windows Update does not download any updates (it says Cancelled for every update in the Update History)
    - When I reboot the vm, it gets stuck on "Shutting down Windows Modules Installer service ..." and I have to cold-Reset the vm to get it working again.
I tried running Windows Update Standalone Installer (Windows6.1-KB947821-v20-x64.msu) on the machine, but that gets stuck on "searching for updates"...
I tried stopping the Windows Update service but that doesn't work either, it says that the service is not responding...
I'm not sure what to try next, I'd appreciate any pointers.
    Thanks a lot,
    Guillaume

None of the advance booting works. I have pressed 0, f2, alt control delete.still nothing just an annoying shutdown screen. Can someone plz help me?

  • Finder gets stuck, and shuts down my wifi connection. Anyone has experienced this same problem?

While working on my website, I have Safari and Finder opened.
Happened three times today. Finder, while moving (by dragging) a file from one window to another, gets stuck.
At the same time, the wifi connection shuts down, and only after I force restart for finder, I get the wifi to work again.
    That's quite weird... is't it?
I have two USB 3.0 HD connected, and 3 Firewire ones connected to the thunderbolt inlet.
Can you help me understand the problem? it happens just randomly.
    Thanks!

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

I was trying to shut off my iphone 3gs and now it is stuck in shut down mode. How do I shut it down?

Try to reset by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again.
After the phone is started again, shut it off as usual.

  • Shut down takes a looooonnnnnngggg time

Ever since I installed the last 10.5.7 update my new Macbook and old (but Intel) iMac take a long time to shut down. Much longer than it used to. In fact, my Macbook seemed to be stuck in shut down last night and after a few minutes I finally just powered down.
    Is something going on here?
    Roger

Boot verbosely - hold down ⌘v keys on boot.
This will also cause a verbose shutdown which should show you exactly what is happening during shutdown.
You can also inspect your console.app logs which will also indicate why the computer is not shutting down normally.

  • MacBook Pro stuck in sleep mode: can't restart or shut down, black screen

I'm running the latest version of Snow Leopard on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro Unibody. After installing the latest Software Update, including a Firmware update for my SuperDrive, the following problem has occurred, for the very first time:
I closed the lid of my laptop for the night, as I do routinely every night, thus putting my MBP to sleep. I leave the various apps open, usually Firefox, iTunes and Entourage. The next morning my MBP felt hot and the screen remained black... it would not change. After repeatedly trying and failing to clear the black screen and bring my apps up, I held the power button down to do a complete Shut Down. My system turned off, but did not do an actual Shut Down. When I press the power button to turn it on, it comes right back into sleep mode with the screen remaining black. I cannot seem to force either a Shut Down or a Restart. I unplugged all peripherals and the power cord, let my MBP cool down completely--for a couple of hours-- and tried everything again. Still no change: I'm stuck in sleep mode with a black screen. I've also tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, but neither works, probably because I'm not coming from a Shut Down. Is anybody else having this problem? Anyone have any suggestions? I think the problem must be somehow related to the latest update, but whatever it is, I'd like to resolve it.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I can't get into my system to see my update version, but I'm certain I'm running the most up-to-date version of Snow Leopard and all other latest updates applicable to my mid-2009 MBP, as I run Software Update routinely. I thoroughly completed all update installations, including the SuperDrive Firmware update, followed all instructions meticulously, including rebooting, and actually used my system for at least one full day without any problems. I'd even recently repaired all permissions. Everything was "humming" along very well. This problem came totally out of the blue. Because the screen is black, I can't actually see what's on it; however, I've put my MBP to sleep every night by closing the lid and it awakens in the morning when I raise the lid. This time the sleep light indicator is on, but nothing happens when I lift the lid, touch the track pad or a key. If I hold the power button down briefly, the sleep light goes out, but when I press the power button again, the light comes right back on. If I depress the power button for several seconds, to initiate a shutdown or restart, it simply shuts off the fan and refuses to completely shut down. This is evidenced by the fact that depressing the power button to start up brings the sleep light on very quickly. I can tell by the way the system sounds that it is on behind the blackened screen. Sorry I can't get you the update versions.
    Thanks

Unfortunately this means that there is a problem in the boot sector of your hard drive. It might be indicative of a fundamental corruption in the coding that allows your computer to boot your operating system from your hard drive. I had this problem twice and it resulted in me having to get a new hard drive and restore my data.
In other words, your computer can't talk to your operating system so you can't access your data.
Here is my advice: DON'T CALL APPLE TECH SUPPORT though they are kind and usually helpful it will take you an hour just to explain the situation and they will only tell you to do what I'm gonna say here.
First: Shut down your computer completely
Two: boot up while holding down the following keys: command, option, p, and r. The computer will reboot 3 times. This solution will likely fail so if you're frustrated skip to the next step.
Three: Boot up while holding down the option key. Select recovery drive. Select your default language. Select disk utility, click on Macintosh HD, and select "verify and repair volume." Likely the verification will produce some line like "unused node not erased." Or something like that. If anything using the words "node structure" comes up, you need a new hard drive.
If after verification and repairs you still can't boot I sincerely hope you have apple care because you will need a new hard drive. Set up an appointment to come in to the apple store, they will tell you to go and get data recovery, just ask them to give you the old hard drive. Unless you have an up to date backup in which case you can just restore from that. If you're lucky the only issue is with the boot sector which means that if you ask them to give you the old hard drive, you can buy an enclosure and you have effectively been given a free external hard drive. It still works to store data just not to load an operating system.
If you have a back up drive bring it to the apple store and they'll do the whole thing right there, it should take around an hour and a half but may take longer.
Hope this helps, it's annoying but it's your safest bet.
    All the best.
