64/16/double bit Adjustment layers?

Hi, I have a 64 bit imported RAW, CR2. I have recently got in the habit of using multiple curves adjustment layers.
Indeed, when I apply a Curves adjustment by Ctrl-M, the histogram stays nice and smooth (as 16 bit implies), but if I use even two adjustment layers, stratification occurs- there is a reduced number of colours, resulting in zeros in the histogram followed by instant peaks.
Is there a way to enable high bitdepth adjustment layers? I used to have CC, and I think I noticed that it wasn't even fixed there... I went back to CS6, thought I'd save my money...

Perhaps someone helpful can answer it. By the way, your display picture is crooked.
(I mean all due respect, but after giving a 'get out of here' line, you demonstrated that you understood the question. Is that the kind of thing you get a + next to your name for around here?)
If you don't know the answer, just refrain from posting. In the interests of defending myself I will deconstruct your post:
Not sure what you are getting at. Even 16bit color space isn't unlimited (correct) and depending on how discrete values overlap/ coincide quantization can occur (correct). Only working in 32bit can further expand that range (to the point where most of the time it is imperceptible). That aside it's really not clear how you work and what adjustments you apply (sigh, nor is it relevant). You would have to provide screenshots (because you say so). Furthermore the histogram may not necessarily be an exact representation since it's calculated on the fly(interesting, but beside the point). Plus of course we really don't know anything about your RAW settings, color management, hardware acceleration settings and so on. This is really much more complex(no, and I should know, I have an Engineering degree, plus more than a decade of coding experience) than just saying that the histogram looks crooked. (nice analogy =) )
I've highlighted some words which people trip over online. It's good manners to assume that your readers are intelligent, so if you say something like "depending" you are basically conceding the point. As I noted, that sentence is correct. But (and this should have been obvious) I'm not talking about one of those 'extreme' cases.
Sorry for any offense. Maybe you were just having a bad day, or needed a coffee...

  • Trying to understand the use of adjustment layers

I think I am missing something here so thought I would bring it here for discussion.
I am learning to do Adjustment Layers and when I do an adjustment layer of levels  and then another of  hue/saturation it has no way of confirming my choices.  If  then  want to do Shadows/Highlights it will not work change anything and I think it is because I have not confirmed the adjustment layer. What do I need to do after doing the adjustment layer to go ahead and do something else no as an adjustment layer on the photo OR is that impossible. How to make this work????
    Sandie

An Adjustment layer effects all visible pixles in the layers below itself. So if you have a Levels Adjustment Layer and the Background layer below, the entire Background layer is affected. If you have another layer above the Background that is not an Adjustment Layer but only covers have the entire image space, the Levels Adjustment will effect the additional layer and the visible parts of the Background layer. If you add a second Adjustment layer, the effects stack. The lower of the Adjustments is applied first, the second is applied afterward, moving upward.
The Adjustment Layers themselves are transparent, they are a bit like a lens filter on your camera. Just like looking through a pair of sunglasses causes the world to appear darker, an a Levels Adjustment Layer can make the layers beneath it appear darker (or lighter, as dictated by the settings). But as Ken mentions, the strenght of using an Adjustment Layer, as opposed to using an Adjustment, is that you can always come back and change the settings later.

  • CS4 - Dual Monitor Setup - Files open on wrong screen + Preview Adjustment layers

I have various workstations running Mac OS 10.5.8 three run PS CS3, and one runs CS4
In CS4 files always open on the monitor I have allocated for my palattes.  Before CS4, Photoshop would open files on the monitor that my last filed was opened on.  This is highly annoying!!! How can I fix it so that it at least always opens on the same monitor.
(My menu bar is on the monitor I've designated for my palettes menu and not the monitor I do all my color work on.)
Also, any hopes that we will be able to have a preview button for adjustment layers again?  This is highly annoying, and if I'm able to do so when adjusting directly onto a layer, why don't I at least have the option to have a preview button when having an adjustment layer????

Well if you menu bar is on your "second" monitor, it's generally considered now the "first" monitor, and hence most files will open on that screen by default. But sometimes you can make a file open on the other monitor if you have your mouse cursor in the other monitor. So put  your cursor on the desired screen, press command-O and the open dialog should show there, and the image should open there too. Also works if you double click a file on the desktop of the 2nd monitor. (Usually, these are the window opening dynamics as best I can figure).

  • Photoshop CS6 Info Palette & Adjustment Layers

I have searched but can't find an answer to my question so I thought this may be the best place to ask.
When I am using adjustment layers in PS 13.0.3 (mountain lion), I notice that the info palette is not giving me a before and after readout of the adjustment.
e.g. I add a curves adjustment layer and remove some cyan from the highlight end, I can see on screen that cyan is removed but the info palette gives me 2 readings, both the same. This can make it difficult if I want to remove an exact amount of colour. I have the info palette is set up the same as every previous version of photoshop I have used, 1st reading actual colour, 2nd reading cmyk. I know this is a bit difficult to explain so I have included an image showing the palette, CS6 on the left and CS5 on the right, same image, same coordinates. CS5 is showing that 4% cyan has been removed, was 18% now 14%, CS6 is showing what it is now.
I work in prepress and do a lot of colour correction for books and magazines so I need to know the before & after readings. Is this a bug/feature??

I'm having this same problem as well.
Two of our macs have this problem and two do not.
The two macs with this problem are:
    Mac Pro
    2 x 2.93 Ghz 6-Core intel Xeon
    96 GB 1333 HZ DDR3 ECC
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    OSX Lion 10.7.5
The two macs that work correctly are:
    Mac Pro
    2 x 3.06 Ghz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    96 GB 1333 HZ DDR3 ECC
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
    OSX Lion 10.7.5
Does anyone know what might cause this problem?

  • Encoding Error caused by Adjustment Layers?

Adjustment extremely are really useful, aren't they?  However today I have come across a problem.
If I add a dissolve (or maybe any transition) between two adjustment layers on the same track, which is necessary if the effect is not keyframable (eg RGB Curves), when I come to render the timeline out, I get an encoding error.
I arrived a this conclusion by a process of trial and error.  The only way around I could see was to ditch the offending ALs and drop the effects onto the underlying clips.  Same result, but not ideal!
Anyone else?  And is there a solution?

Maybe, i don't know: it seems like a straightforward bug or oversight to me.  You'd have thought they might have expected people to want to use adjustment layers in this way.  It's quite common if, for example you have two clips with some kind of transition to want to be able to match the transition in the adjustment layers on top of the clips.
Something else - off topic - that seems a bit clunky is that you have to "create" an adjustment layer, which then appears in the project pane, then drag it into the timeline, then add the effects, etc.
But those effects aren't then associated with the adjustment layer in the project pane; it is still empty and you can drag it on top of another clip and start adding effects again.  This works fine, of course, but:
    (a) It's a confusing metaphor, as they say
    (b) It would be handy to be able to keep adjustment layers, complete with effects, to use again (I know you can copy and paste them in the timeline, or alt-drag, but still...)

  • Multiple adjustment layers vs. multiple effects on a single adj. layer

I posted this earlier on the Creative Cow forums, and came back with inconclusive answers...
If I have the exact same clip in 2 separate comps...In Comp 1 I have 5 color correction effects on a single adjustment layer, and in Comp 2 I have 5 adjustment layers with the same effects, 1 effect each spread over the 5 adjustment layers (in the same order). Should I theoretically expect to get the exact same image in both comps?
Here's the reason I'm asking. I'm doing some color correction that occasionally involves a lot of keying, which I'm doing in Colorista II. It's not green/blue screen keying, it's keying the shot footage for adjustment, e.g. skin tones, backgrounds, blown-out highlights, etc. I'm finding that in order for the Colorista II keyer to work based on previous instances of effects calculations (i.e. Levels, Hue/Sat, or other Colorista instances, all of which occur *before* the key) I'm having to put it on another Adjustment Layer for the keyer to take the earlier effects into account. Otherwise, if it's on the same adjustment layer, the Colorista keyer disregards the previous effects & uses the un-effected clip as the source for the key.
I don't know if this is just the way the Colorista II keyer works, or if this is a global After Effects-wide order-of-operations thing that I don't fully have a handle on. I understand order of operations, and that Adjustment Layers affect all layers below it, and all that stuff. My question is, what (if anything) is the difference in behavior between multiple effects on a single adjustment layer vs the same effects spread out over multiple adjustment layers? Is it predictable & consistent? Or is it just common knowledge (to everyone else but me) that sometimes you have to use multiple adjustment layers based on the specific effect combinations that you're using?

I don't know if this is just the way the Colorista II keyer works, or if this is a global After Effects-wide order-of-operations thing that I don't fully have a handle on.
As far as I understand the SDK, it is not considered practical, since it would require a plug-in to establish its own comp buffer outside the main rendering pipeline, which could lead to issues with color consistency and things like premultiplied vs. straight Alpha. I also seem to remember that as of CS5 it is actually no longer technically possible. Hence effects that use specific source footage API calls will bypass any previous effects and directly operate on the source.
My question is, what (if anything) is the difference in behavior between multiple effects on a single adjustment layer vs the same effects spread out over multiple adjustment layers? Is it predictable & consistent?
The result should be the same under all circumstances, assuming all adjustment layers have the same opacity and no masks and their stacking order is equal. Only when you apply masks or adjust the opacity to fade specific adjustments you will see differences. It is also to note that having all effects might be a bit faster and more efficient, since less data is passed from buffer to buffer...

  • Using LR Develop settings as Photoshop Adjustment Layers

This would obviously mean a major feature upgrade and I don't know to which extent this is currently feasible in 16-bit, but I believe it would be a logical and important step forward at some point in the future.
Currently there is no efficient method of combining the use of Lightroom's built in Develop engine with a more refined Photoshop treatment. For example, if I want to apply one adjustment to a part of an image, I have to make two versions in LR, export both to Photoshop and merge them into one image. This method gets very impractical when you want to change many different settings for individual regions.
So the idea is that Lightroom shouldn't export photos to Photoshop as flattened images but keep all Develop adjustments intact and extensively modifiable by using the original source image as Background Layer and importing all LR settings as Adjustment Layers.
Many of the current Develop settings (such as color, tone curve, temperature...) could already translate to Photoshop easily, others (Shadows / Highlights) could be implemented via Non-Destructive Smart Filters. Spot removal could be rendered on a second layer on top of the background.
I think this would ultimately bring PS and LR closer together and allow a better workflow integration.

No single "Adjustment Layer" could ever duplicate all of Lighroom/Camera Raw's controls...ain't gonna hapen. But you CAN open in Photoshop, add a smart object using Camera Raw (easier to do with CS3 & CR 4) and have the same LR/CR rendering as a smart object...

  • Photoshopology Quizz: Introduction of Adjustment layers

They appeared in Photoshop for the first time in version... 7 ?
    Thanks

I agree, high bit depth and ACR, along with warp/liquify and Smart Objects all deserve a place in the pantheon of serious developments. But they all pale into insignificance compared to actions and adjustment layers.
In Photoshop 4 you could set up action that would render text and vectors on large scale documents and automatically sesize them to the target use displacement maps with actions to quickly tweak alpha channels to create subtle distortions, in those days replacing liquify and warp customize actions do almost anything available with layer styles etc.
All with the power afforded by actions. A LOT of window dressing since then - how many interface "enhancements" have we had?
The strength of the application we have today, and its consequent massive revenue to Adobe each year, really rests on a few extremely clever individuals who were working on the app at that time.

  • Elements 9 - unable to make adjsutments in adjustment layers

I have considerable experience with adjustment layers in earlier versions of elements.  Recently installed V9. I can create adjustment layers - but the dialog box to make adjustments never opens. Double clicking on the thumbnail does nothing nor does trying to access the adjustment through the menus.
Anyone else run into this?  Suggestions?
    Thanks,

    1) Make sure you have the adjustment layer highlighted in tyhe layers pallet and not the background layer.
    2) Click on Adjustments Pallet to open the controls.

  • Can I convert a series of adjustment layers into a single action?

    Hello,
I have a Photoshop CS6 document with 20-some adjustment layers and would like to be able to apply their effect to multiple image files. I'm looking for a way to convert the series of adjustment layers into a single action so that I can batch process a set of images. Can this be done?
Unless I'm missing something, it appears that no trivial solution exisits. For example, there's no option that allows for selecting the adjustment layers, right clicking them, and choosing 'convert to action.' What I want to avoid is having to redo each adjustment layer just for the sake of recording an action.
Also, I understand that I can always "place" (i.e. drag and drop) the image requiring processing into the Photoshop document containing the adjustment layers, saving a merged copy as jpeg, and repeat... but such a manual method would border on insulting to this prowess of a program.
If anyone can get creative and suggest a method of recording an action that can make use of the document with the adjustment layers and a variable document that will be passed through during the batch process, I'm all eyes!
    Many thanks.

You have the other choice with drag/drop or duplicate where you copy the adjustment layers into the other image document.  Target all the adjustment layers in the layer palette click on the first one the Ctrl|CMD+click on the others or if adjacent Shift+click on the last one to target all the adjustment layer then use menu Layer>Duplicate Layers...  and use the pull down menu in the pop-up dialog to choose the other open image document.
You can of course record an action when you add all the adjustment layers then play that action on the other images. Twenty adjustment layer on top of an image seems a bit extreme to me.

  • Saving and reusing adjustment layers

Hi, I feel like what I'm trying to do should be easy, but I can't figure it out.
I have a set of files that I'd like to apply the same set of adjustment layers to.  I opened one of the images, created the adjustment layers, and tweaked the settings until I was happy.  Now I'd like to create an action that would apply this set of layers to multiple files in batch mode.  I understand that if I were to record my adjustment layer creation, I could replay this, but I didn't record - I have a set of layers (I even saved them to a separate file) but no way to retrace my steps.  I could do all this by hand by duplicating my adjustment layer group to files that I open, but I can't find a way to automate this.  Any help?
    Thanks,
    Vladimir

If I correctly understand your question, then my naswer is yes - you can reuse adjustment layers.  Say you have a  psd file which contains a layer with your image and several adjustment layers on top.  To  apply those same adjustment layers to other images convert the image layer to a smart object and save the file as your primary image file.  I expect the following simple sequence, which is actionable, can be put in a batch process though I've never done it as I can  manually click through images  as fast as I can hit the keys.
The  main features of the action are  to open the primary file and right click on the smart object. From the drop down list choose Replace Contents. This brings up a Place window from which you select ( double click)  the next image and that image appears in Photoshop's main window with all adjustments applied. Click on save  and repeat the process for the next  image.
It is rare that I need the same adjustment layers to be applied to many images- it seems that often times each image requires slightly different adjustment settings. The above process, however,  works for other operations as well, say filters (smart)  or Calculations which I may apply to multiple images.

  • Adjustment layers not 'sticking' on animated GIFs

I'm trying to adjust brightness/contrast and saturation over about 30 layers on an animated GIF. Everything looks great until I do a save for web and click on the animate box. At that point, the color/changes drop off completely. It shows up fine when it's just the one layer being shown. And it seems to be showing up on all the layers when I'm in the main edit window. I keep looking and making sure I have the 'this adjustment affects all layers below,' and I do. I even tried saving a GIF with the other setting turned on and I got the same thing.
Anyway, I exported a few GIFs, thinking maybe the adjustment layers would kick in as it saved, but nope. Neither layer saved into the exported GIF.
I'm sure this is just a simple setting I'm missing, but I'm banging my head against the desk at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks! I'm still trying my best to sort out why the adjustment layers drop off when I go to animate the GIF ... BUT I did duplicate the adjustment layers -- one for each frame -- and then clicked on the adjustment layers and selected layer and merged them one at a time and it worked. It's still more tedious than I hoped, but not as tedious as trying to adjust each layer on its own and having to input the same exact settings for each layer.
I would still be interested in anyone else's take/advice on applying adjustments to all the layers in an image at the same time and having it cary through to 'save for web.' Animated GIFs are so simple in theory, but I'm finding them to be absolutely one of  the most frustrating and tedious things to try and edit/create.

  • How to change the default name of new adjustment layers? (and other Q's)

How do I change the default name of new adjustment layers?
How can I make it so that adjustment layers don't come with a mask when I create them (unless I have a selection active)?
Why isn't the Shadows/Highlights functionality an adjustment layer? It's accessable under "adjustments" but you can't use it non-destructive
Where can I find documentation on Photoshop's API? (I want o make tools for it - javascript)

Forgive me for not looking into your Maya-specific links, but one can automate Photoshop using JavaScript indeed (on Windows also VB, on Mac also AppleScript).
Not everything can be automated naturally, but a lot – and it can really speed up many tasks; and with the »small« repetitive ones like saving copies off of files etc. combining Scripts with Configurator Panels can be especially convenient.
There is a Scripting Forum over at
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/photoshop_scripting
As for plugins: it's something I would like to learn some day (I guess you would have to go with Flash and AS3 for making actual plugins)
I think you might also have to learn C++ or C.
There is Forum the contributors to which might be able to give you pointers if you get to that.

  • How do I save a stack of adjustment layers that I want to then apply instantly to another image  ?

Can anyone help with the following Photoshop question please ?
I've been working on a 16bit image in PS CC on my Mac that has a stack of approximately 15 Adjustment Layers (AL's) which has taken a fair amount of work to put together and then saved as an unflattened PSD. The AL's consist of Curves, Selective Colour, Hue & Sat, Vibrance, Col Bal and Photo Filters with a variety of Masks. All AL's have been renamed with their own unique names.
    My question is:
How do I save this stack of 15 AL's, as I want apply them to other similar images that where shot during a motor drive burst either side of the image mentioned above ?
I know I can achieve exactly what I want by dragging all 15 AL's from the original image on to newly opened individual images.
Although this method works absolutely perfectly and is instant I want to be able to somehow apply these AL's in an instantaneous automated way to enable me to deal with the large numbers of images that I want to apply this to.
It appears to be the case that it isn't possible to simply select the complete stack of AL's from the original image, copy them and then paste them into a new image ! If this was possible I would simply create a simple action to deal with it.
I know already that I can create an action to deal with this now, however that entails laboriously retracing what I did to the original image by saving presets to the many AL's, then reloading them, putting them in the correct order and finally renaming all of the AL's but as you'll appreciate it's a fairly long drawn out process which would take forever.
I also need a method which has instant built in flexibility for when I tweak some of the AL's settings. At this point I wouldn't want to then have to go through the whole process of re-writing an involved action.
I hope the above makes some sense to you all and that you can understand what I want to do.
I've briefly looked over the Adobe forum where many people have been trying to find unsuccessfully the answer to this question for many years. If anyone has some sort of workaround for this I would very much appreciate hearing from you.

  • Muse doesn't seem to see Photoshop Adjustment Layers

I like to place Photoshop files in Muse, so I can quickly edit a non-destructive format, instead of a JPEG. I recently noticed that some placed Photoshop files were markedly more dull in Muse than they appear in Photoshop.
Opening the Muse-created web page and comparing it with an open Photoshop file, it appears that Muse is not honoring my top layers, which are Photoshop Adjustment Layers.

As much as I believe that Muse is not really fit for purpose yet, I do not have the issues you are encountering with Opera.
