64 Bit Essbase

Hi there,Further to receiving news that Essbase 7.1.4 has just been released as 64-bit application can anyone confirm the following for me please...We still have a 64bit server here, Intel Itanium - obviously we could install Essbase 7.1.4 on this, as tis 64bit code. However, what about Analyzer, Performance Suite, EIS etc...they are still 32-bit - so would we need to install these on a seperate 32-bit server? Or would they be "emulated" fast enough on the 64bit Itanium server?Any info appreciated. Cheers.

THere have been a lot of post sover here on the support matrix of Oracle EPM 11.1.1.3. I have gone through the Matrx and have a few queries.I would like to know whether my understanding is right.
Which one is compatible
32-Bit Essbase on 32-Bit Box - Compatible
32-Bit Essbase on 64-Bit Box - No additional benefits at essbase level. Can we expect an increase in performance at OS level?
64-Bit Essbase on 64-Bit Box - Improved performance both at essbase level and OS level.
Now, Can we install a 64-Bit Essbase on a 32-Bit Box? I don't think this is suggested option to go for. But does it really supports?

  • 32 bit Planning compatability with 64 bit Essbase

    Hi,
We are running version 11.1.1.3.01 of Planning, and Essbase 11.1.1.3 on two Windows 2003 R2 Sp2 servers. Planning/Worspace/etc on one server and Essbase by itself on the other. We want to add a new planning server and a new essbase server.
Will 32bit planning work with 64bit essbase if we want to go that route? Any downside to using 64 bit essbase with planning?
Also can multiple Planning Application servers exist in a single Worspace instance. In other words do I need to install workspace along side of planning on the new planning server? Can I get the existing Workspace installation to recognize the new planning server? What is the best practice? Hope that makes sense.
    Thanks for any responses,
    Keith

Best practice for multiple Planning servers is a load balancer (Force5 BigIP/Citrix NetScaler/Cisco/Microsoft NLB). Most larger companies have BigIP's or Netscalers.
The VIP should be set with sticky sessions based on source IP and you would register your environment with the VIP.

  • SQL Load from Oracle into 64 bit Essbase 9.3.1 - issue

I have a sql load that works fine in 32 bit Essbase 7.1.5
Now I have setup the same sql load in a new 64 bit Essbase 9.3.1 environment. SQL runs. However when it retrieves it is not retrieving some fields "correctly". For example I have some extract functions in the SQL to extract the month or year from a date field. These are returning "0" now for the month or year. (the function syntax is correct as it works in the 7.1.5 environment. Plus for all my fields that are returning numeric dollar values, they are returning a value of "0" instead of the correct value (which it returns in the 7.1.5 environment).
The sql works correctly if run in SQLPlus. So Essbase is having the issue.
    Any ideas?
Edited by: Sean V on Jun 5, 2009 7:48 AM

    Hi Sean,
If you can do it yourself or someone else who can do it for you,
create a view in your db schema you are connected to and use a tool like Oracles SQLDeveloper (it's for free) or something similar to check your query result by select from your view.
This way you can hide your internal logic behind this view and no one has to worry about it.
From my POV this approach has no drawback but only advantage for you.
If it works as expected put the view into your rules file (I do assume you are using rules files)
Example (you need the CREATE VIEW privilege for you account(schema)):
    CREATE v_dataload as
SELECT DIM_COL1 as year , DIM_COL2 as month, DIM_COL3 as market , DATA_COL1 as profit, DATA_COL2 as costs .... etc.,
In you rules file you then just put in the SELECT box: year, month, profit, costs ...
and in the table box: v_dataload
If you name you columns like the Dimension (Gen1) you have the comfort that essbase automatically maps the columns tho the appropriate dimension. (But remember a colum in Oracle can have only up to 30 Characters)
    Back to you question:
If you get a correct result from you view when using SQLDeveloper but not in you rules file I would say it's very likely a ODBC driver problem.
If so, please check if you have installed the correct driver for your system. MERANT driver is the best choice as fare as I know.
In normal cases you never should have to cast anything into a VARCHAR, since exactly this is the job of the ODBC driver.
However, if everything fails and a cast (like Glen said) is the only way you can make it work put this cast into your view too.
    CREATE v_dataload as
SELECT TO_CHAR(DIM_COL1) as year , TO_CHAR(DIM_COL2) as month, TO_CHAR(DIM_COL3) as market ,TO_CHAR( DATA_COL1) as profit, TO_CHAR(DATA_COL2) as costs .... etc.,

  • 64-Bit Essbase Optimization Tips

We are upgrading from 9.3.1 to 11.1.1.3 and have decided to try 64-bit Essbase on a Windows server with Xeon processors. All went well in initial testing, my ASO models all ran faster on the new 64-bit server. However, we have a planning model that of course is BSO. That model is performing very poorly on the new 64-bit server (most calculations are taking 5-6 times longer). Just to prove that the difference was 64-bit and not the upgrade to 11.1.1.3, I installed the 32-bit version of 11.1.1.3 on another server and ran the same test. It performed fine, very similarly to our 32-bit 9.3.1 installation.
I guess I'm looking for any ideas on tuning BSO applications or the server itself in a 64-bit windows environment. Also, has anyone else had similar issues.
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Jeff

You're the first person I've heard say that performance is slower on 64 bit. Although BSO Essbase is always...interesting.
Did you change platforms (Windows to *nix?)?
What specifically is slower -- aggregations, specific allocations, something else?
64 bit Essbase has made my Planning life much, much easier -- I don't have to wring every bit of performance out of Essbase to get more than acceptable speed. I am enjoying the laziness. :)
If you go onto ODTUG's website, click on Tech Resources, and search for "64" you'll find two presentations on optimizing for 64 bit, one by Edward Roske and the other by Brian Suter. If you're not an ODTUG member, you can sign up for a free associate membership.
Okay, if I mention ODTUG, I have to mention 2010's Kaleidoscope conference in Washington DC, 27 June to 1 July. There are many, many tuning sessions that are worth everyone's time. Many of the posters on this board will be presenting there. If you like us on the board, you'll (hopefully) like us more in person.

    Thanks john for your reply.
Below are my questions which are still not clear to me. We are using only SAN Pillar Storage for DB servers and Local Hard disks for all Application servers. So said this App Servers cant access SAN storage all they have is local hard disk for each app server.
    1. For Essbase Server can i use SAN shared file system from pillar storage for ARBORPATH only for Active-Passive setup.
    2. For Applications can i use the local hard disk space as shared between two systems for HA (Active-Active).

  • Essbase Client 32 bit on the Solaris SPARC 64 bit Cognos server - Need help

    Hello All,
I have a SunSolaris SPARC 64 bit OS on which i have the 32 bit Cognos 8.4.1 installed.
I now wanted to install a 32 bit Essbase client on this server.
can anyone please let me know if there exists a 32 bit essbae client which can be installed on the SunSolaris SPARC 64 bit OS ?
    Thanks you in advance.
    MS

I will asume the latest version of the essbase client
"EPM System Installer installs both 32-bit and 64-bit Essbase Client on a machine with a 64-bit operating system."
Once it is installed you may need to update the environment variables to point to the 32bit client.

  • What version of Essbase Excel add-in support 64 bit Windows 7 on our PC?

    1) Can anyone tell us what is latest version of 64 bit Essbase Excel-add-in 11.1.1.3.x and will this latest version of Essbase Excel add-in support 64 bit Windows 7 on our PC?
    2) we downloaded Essbase excel add-in 11.1.2 and was not able to connect to Essbase 11.1.1.3 server. It gave an error message - "This version is newer than the Essbase server." Is there a workaround? (we were hoping 11.1.2 would support 64 bit windows 7)
ps. There is a knowlegebase article that teaches us how to get Smartview 11.1.2 to connect to Essbase. We could not quite follow the badly written KB artible, but Ms. V from Oracle tech support claims she was able to connect and she wrote the article.
We did manage to get Smartview 11.1.2 to connect to Planning 11.1.1.3!!

    Thanks John and Jasmine.
    John,
I am able to connect using Essbase excel add-in 11.1.2 and see the list of Essbase server 11.1.1.3 app/databases. However when I tried to select one of the applications/databases, I get the Essbase warning "This version of Essbase 11.1.1.3) is older than the version of the Essbase API (11.1.2.0) you are using."
I get sent back to Essbase system Login screen and am asked to select a app/database. Add-in keeps giving me the above message - none of the 11.1.1.3 databases would allow me to connect.
I guess you guys did not experience this problem?

  • Any known issues with Essbase 64 bit and other components as 32 bit

    Hi Everyone,
Are there any known issues with 64 bit Essbase and other components (Planning, EAS, Provider services, EAS, Workspace and Reporting) in 32 bit?
    Version is EPM 11.1.1.3
The reason for choosing ESSBASE 64 bit is of course performance. We decided to stick to 32 bit for the web applications due to some known issues and bitter experiences in past in this version with 64 bit web deployments.
OS is Windows 2003 Server (64 bit for the ESSBASE server and 32/64 bit for the application server)
    Thanks,
    Sayantan

Hyperion 32-bit Web Apps are fully compatible with Essbase 64-bit. Same with 32-bit Essbase client.

  • Upgrading Essbase 9.3.1.3 32-bit to 64-bit

We currently have the 32-bit version of Essbase 9.3.1.2 along with Oracle BI 10.1.3.4 running on a 64-bit Windows 2003 OS. We want to upgrade to 64-bit Essbase 9.3.1.2. Do we need to uninstall the 32-bit and install the 64-bit Essbase? If we do this, will it affect the OBI installation? Will I need to uninstall and reinstall OBI?
    Thanks in advance,
    Terri

You should just be able to uninstall and then install essbase again (reboot the machine after you have uninstalled), I would make sure you have backed up your essbase applications.
OBIEE is just using the essbase client so you shouldn't need to install again.
    Cheers

  • Trying to get Essbase Client 11.1.2.3 for Linux 32bit, please need help

    Hello,
I am running a RedHat Enterprise Linux 6.4 64-bit system and have an application that requires the 32-bit Essbase Client 11.1.2.X libraries in order to connect to an Essbase 11.1.2 server instance.
From reading through the forum posts for the past couple days I have come to an understanding that Oracle Essbase 11.1.2 no longer ships a Linux client as a separate assembly so you have to install the full Essbase server then extract the client files out of that to use..  So I am trying to get the correct bundle of files downloaded to even get the installer to launch properly so I can select a minimal installation including client components, but I can't get the correct zip files, I am getting close, but there is still a few missing, and the instructions I have found seem to refer to 11.1.1.X versions that have changed quite a bit in the 11.1.2.X version.
Can anyone please help me figure out what I am still missing to get the install running and how to extract the client libraries?
    So far, I have downloaded:

BUT I still have the following missing assemblies I can't account for:

I am going through the list of entries, but the only references I have seen so far have been for Windows downloads and this is linux, and then there are the Assembly for linux32 messages, but I need that since I need the 32bit client libraries, right?
Can someone shed some light on this adventure in installing all of this since all of the install instructions I have been seeing are for an older version packaged differently?
    Thank you in advance,
    Nathan

Thank you for this.  It set me on the right path.  I wound up installing all of them as I was still getting those errors, but after I realized the REAL error was not the aseemblies not exsisting, but it was the "EPMINS-01084: Assembly for linux32 platform is used Failed!"  error.
The Linux System i was TRYING to install on is RHEL 64bit, but I was trying to install a 32bit client as i needed a 32bit client.  It just refused to install a 32bit client on a 64bit Linux machine.
I configured a CentOS 32bit Linux VMWare image and viola, the same driver files installed without an error.
Not sure why the 32bit client would not let me install on a 64bit system, but I finally got it now.
Now to tar the Essbase directories up and move them over to the RedHat machine where I need them.
    Thank you for your help.

  • 11.1.2 Essbase config:can't choose"Connect to a previously configured SS db

I opened a case with Tech Support but they are a slow to respond, and I haven't found anything searching online, and I've already wasted a day on this with a very tight deadline, and I know you guys are brilliant, so I wanted to see if anyone has any ideas.
Attempting to install 11.1.2 in a distributed virtual environment for the umpteenth time (always with fresh virtual servers each time) but while configuring Essbase, on the step "Set up Shared Services and Registry Database Connection associated with the instance home" neither of the radio buttons is greyed out however it won't really let me choose the first one "Connect to a previously configured Shared Services database". When I click on it, the radio button gets "selected" but the little orange thin border that goes around the text for the radio actually jumps down and the border appears around the radio text for "Perform 1st-time configuration of Shared Services database".
The window won't let me click Next until I fill in the details to configure a new database which of course I don't want to do because I already have one I need to use.
I configured the Shared Services database on my other server, and can successfully launch and log in to Shared Services.
    Environment O/Ss: Windows Server 2008 R2
    serverA (RDBMS server only):
    MSSQL Server 2008 R2
EPM database set with Windows/SQL Server mixed authentication
    Port is set correctly.
serverB (Shared Services, Reporting, web apps):
Foundation Services: Foundation Services Web Applications, Oracle HTTP Server, WebLogic Application Server
    Workspace
Reporting and Analysis: Framework Web Application, Framework Services and Common Libraries
    Interactive Reporting: Interactive Reporting Services
Financial Reporting: Financial Reporting Web Application, Financial Reporting Print Server Service
Web Analysis: Web Analysis Web Application
Essbase: Essbase Administration Services 64-bit Web Application, Provider Services Web Application
    serverC (Essbase, EIS)
Essbase: Essbase client, EAS Client, Studio client, EIS Client, Essbase Integration Services 64-bit, Essbase Studio Server, Essbase Services Server 64-bit
(And, as required???: Foundation Services Web Applications, Oracle HTTP Server, WebLogic Application Server). But I won't configure Oracle HTTP Server thanks to John's advice on that.
    Installation steps taken:
serverA: Created new SQL Server database to use for all products (as per documentation). Except I'll create EIS database later.
serverB: Installed: Foundation Services: Foundation Services Web Applications, Oracle HTTP Server, WebLogic Application Server
(during that chose "Perform 1st-time configuration of Shared Services database" and provided the correct RDBMS server name, port, database name and SQL User name/pwd that has SQL Admin rights and box admin rights).
(also Defined a new domain for WebLogic, accepted the defaults and typed an Admin password.)
    -----Then configured those products successfully.
-----Then I successfully launched & logged in to Shared Services as admin.
------serverB: Next I went back to the installation on this server, this time choosing all the Reporting & web apps stuff listed above.
    -----Then configured those products successfully.
Question: I did NOT configure Web Server yet, apparently you do that after installing & configuring every single other product on every single server, correct?
    ------Rebooted serverB.
serverC: Installed the Essbase products listed above.
-------Attempting to configure all those products and get stuck on the screen where it won't let me choose to "Connect to a previously configured Shared Services database". The screen is behaving strangely as described above.
    Windows services on serverB:
Hyperion Integration Services exists and is Started.
NO OTHER Oracle/Hyperion services exist but I know they should.
Logs. serverB doesn't even have a "user_projects" directory unfortunately. Home\diagnostics\logs - I'm not seeing anything noteworthy in the logs there so can you let me know which logs I should include here, from which folders/servers? thanks!
I'm running the installs logged on as my Active Directory account (I have server admin & SQL Server admin rights).
The install assemblies are all together as required (I downloaded everything to 1 folder and extracted them to that same folder). I'm installing from a network drive as recommended in the documentation even though that seems strange.
Installing to the D drive on each server, using the default middleware home directories etc.
NOTE: On a previous attempt I realized I didn't have "Additional Content" extracted, so I extracted that one and now I can't get an Essbase server installation configuration to work to save my life.
Thanks in advance for any ideas!
    -Karen Smejkal

Interesting. I installed all components on 1 server (installed Foundation first then came back around and selected all products listed above) and the configurations were all successful (in fact the DEFAULT choice this time was correct - "Connect to a previously configured Shared Services database").
One thing that was different about this install was I put the SQL Server name as "myserver\DW" - including the SQL instance name on there instead of just the Windows Server name. Not sure if that's what made it work this time? Previously I just put "myserver" as the SQL Server name but the database IS in an instance called "DW", so I tried that and it let me put it in there so maybe that's what I should do every time. I'm going to attempt a new distributed install and see what happens but it won't be completed until Monday afternoon.
Or am I installing the wrong components on the wrong servers trying to do it distributed?
    Thank you,
    Karen

  • OBIEE - new logical colums fails when sourced from Essbase

I created a new logical column by using locate , substring etc which works fine by itself. Wheen I use that DIM value against a measure , i get these messages
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 42043] An external aggregate is found in an outer query block. (HY000)
    SQL Issued: SELECT Portfolio.LOB saw_0, Measures."Number of Exposures" saw_1 FROM cdwzp3013 ORDER BY saw_0
Its true that this modified member does not exist in the essbase . the original member has 'External_aggregate' . If I change the new logical column LOB to 'SUM' .it works but then I have to change all measures and then OBIEE never returns any rows . Probably it takes fior ever to the sum again
Question : Is there a way we can tell OBIEE/Essbase that this modified column is for display only or prompts etc ..but the real filter or sum must be done on the original member name
    Thanks

I wonder if cube import only works when using a 32-bit Essbase client?

The existing adapter is outdated (for Essbase 11.1.1.3), and we followed the document to import, register, configure new Essbase adapter.
However, after machine profile, adapter options (which application to connect and so on) are set, we tried to configure dimension mappings.
In the "Target Dimension" field in the "Dimension" tab of adapter configuration window, it only shows "Connection failed." in the drop down list.
Then we discovered that we need 32-bit Essbase Runtime client after reading an Oracle KM Article, then we copied it from Essbase server and set the environment variables.
After doing so, and register the adapter again, now the dimension is shown in the pop-up window when configuring dimension of the Essbase adapter.
The progress of our FDM adapter registration:
    1. Import the adapter ES11X-G4-J.xml in FDM workbench.
    2. Put the upsES11XG4J.exe file under <EPM_Oracle_Home>\common\EssbaseRTC\bin
    3. Create a system environment variable ESSBASEPATH with value "<EPM_Oracle_Home>\common\EssbaseRTC\11.1.2.0" and add following value to PATH environment variable: "<EPM_Oracle_Home>\bin-32; %ESSBASEPATH%\bin; <EPM_Oracle_Home>\products\Essbase\EssbaseClient-32\bin", where the <EPM_Oracle_Home> resemble our EPM location.
    4. Register the adapter from "File -> Register Adapter" in workbench and select the upsES11XG4J.exe file.
    5. Executed "Run -> dcomcnfg" trying to update the launching user right for corresponding DCOM component (upsES11XG4J.cluHypWindowEB) but could not find it there.
Does anyone encountered this situation before?

    Thanks Jeff.
Sorry I didn't notice your reply here, since Oracle Support has answered that for Windows Server 2008 R2, this step is no longer needed when configuring FDM Essbase Adapter. That's sweet.
    Warm Regards,
    John

  • Essbase Calculation Script taking more time in new environment

    Hi Everyone:
We have four environments in our implementation.
    1. DEV Environment - 64 bit Essbase Version 11.1.1.3
    2. PreProd Environment - 32 bit Essbase Version 9.3.0
    3. PreProd Environment - 64 bit Essbase Version 11.1.1.3
In the above mentioned environment PreProd Environment - 64 bit Essbase Version 11.1.1.3 is a newly installed
    environment.
We have migrated our Application from PreProd Environment - 32 bit Essbase Version 9.3.0 to PreProd Environment - 64 bit Essbase Version 11.1.1.3. A calculation script that takes only 20 minutes in 32 bit PreProd is taking more than
5 and half hours in newly installed 64 bit PreProd.
We have also migrated our Application from DEV Environment - 64 bit Essbase Version 11.1.1.3 to PreProd Environment - 64 bit Essbase Version 11.1.1.3. The calculation script that takes only 20 minutes in 64 bit Dev is taking more than 5 and half hours in newly installed 64 bit PreProd.
All the server settings and cache setting everything looks similar in all the three environments.
Please advice us what are all the possibilities that creates the issue.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Prabhakar.

    Hi Cameron,
    Thanks for your reply.
I have cross checked the Virtual memory in both servers,in new server it was declared high.
Please find the cfg setting which we are using in our application.

    Data Cache:250000

The all above settings are identical both servers.
In New server ,only one script that is taking more time but remaining scripts are working fine with less time.
We also did one test cause that splitting the script in to multiple and executed ,in this cause the script where we are using direct assigning value from member(say A1) to another member(Say A2) is taking more time. But same scripts we executed in old server it executes fine.
Still we are not able to find out exact root cause for this issue.
Could please anyone help me to resove this issue.
    Regards,
    Prabhakar.
