64-bit mode on MacBook Pro?

How do you know that your Mac is running in 64-bit mode. I run my Windows 7 partition in 64bit mode, but I don't know if my Mac is doing the same.
Thank You.
Specs below (in green text)

Taking a quick look (no pun intended) in Activity Monitor I see that almost everything is running in 64bit mode (except for ituneshelper and itunes), but safari runs in 64bit as well.
Anyways, let's see what Steve Jobs has instore for Mac OS X ("Lion") tomorrow at the "Back To The Mac" event. Hopefully, OSX Lion will run well on the current 2010 MacBook Pro's without any kind of upgrading (Hardware-wise, like ram upgrade). Personally, I don't understand why Apple feels the need to release a new OSX, I mean Snow Leopard came a little over a year ago and it is the best Version of OSX yet (I used Tiger, and Leopard, and I say 10.6 is a leap forward improvement over Leopard in terms of snappyness). OSX (Snow Leopard) is lightyears over Windows in terms of technologies, I mean, look at how OSX uses its kernel, it runs 64bit capable applications in a 32bit kernel and still the user enjoy the benefits of 64bit applications without the need to boot with the 64bit kernel, in Windows 7 you can't do that. What I would not like to see in 10.7 is someting like ditching the current aqua interface in favor of the minimalistic iOS UI, it will make OSX look like (in Jobs terms) as "Baby Software", I guess is me but Aqua fits OSX still to this date, even Windows Aero looks retro when you put it against Aqua.
Thank You everyone for your feedback.

  • Warning: Don't install Windows 7 64-bit on Older MacBook Pros

    I totally hosed my machine by installing Windows 7 64 bit on a MacBook Pro that Apple has not deemed to be okay with running Snow Leopard in 64-bit. I have a Core 2 Due, which is fully 64-bit. Windows 7 64-bit runs perfectly on a MacBook Pro, but Apple's Snow Leopard can only handle 32-bits. Crazy.
    I'm guessing Windows 7 updated the MacBook Pro's EFI to 64 bit, which since my Firmware hasn't been updated, can't recognize or load. Some I'm stuck.
    Does anyone know how to return a 64 bit efi back to its original 32 bit version? I've been forced to reinstall Snow Leopard, hopefully the Disk Image I created will be able to bring back my data, otherwise I'm screwed and really ******.

    I don't think Windows 7 would normally modify your Guid Partition Table, but Boot Camp
    (particularly the later versions) is rapidly gaining a nasty reputation for hosing partition maps.
    Test Disk might could help:
    http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
    You will need to boot it in firewire mode (if supported) or from an external clone.
    I hope your disk image is good. Rule of thumb for OS Disk Images:
    Make them sparseimage or sparsebundle, do not compress, and last but not least;
    Make 2 of them. Just some friendly advice.
    I have yet to see anyone repair a defective, compressed, UDIF disk image. I have
    successfully repaired sparse UDSP/UDSB images using either disk utility and/or Disk Warrior
    and/or iPartition or some combination of the three.
    I'm not against disk images, to the contrary, I use them almost exclusively for backup lately.
    I mount them, then place a clone or data on them using Carbon Copy Cloner or Chronosync.
    Of course I only use UDSP/UDSB uncompressed images.

    Not using Boot Camp, but you should be able to using virtualization software such as Parallels to run Windows concurrently with OS X.

    Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    You have to install the Windows support software after installing Windows. The Windows support software includes all the drivers that Windows needs to work properly on the Mac.
    First, you have to download them (I recommend you to do it in OS X), and you can download the Windows support software in the Support site > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1638 Then, follow the steps of the site to burn them onto a USB drive or DVD, and finally, start in Windows and install the Boot Camp drivers

    You could just disable updates. Change these settings in about:config.
    * app.update.auto - set to false
    * app.update.enabled - set to false
    You can still check for updates with the "Check for Updates" button in the About Firefox window, but it will download the update file anyway if there is an update available. You can also check which is the current release from here:

  • How to run macos universal built binary on 32 bit boot of macbook pro

    I have lot of doubts using universal built binary. I didnt get required information about universal binary from google or documentation provided by macos on universal binary.
    Here are the steps I followed:
    1) I compiled my application selecting architectures i386 and x86_64 (from xcode).
    2) I see application is built as fat binary which supports i386 and x86_64 (using file command).
    TestApp: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures
    TestApp (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64
    TestApp (for architecture i386): Mach-O executable i386
    3) Now the problem is when I boot 32 bit kernel on macbook pro and try to execute my universal binary, it is behaving as 64 bit architecture application( sizeof(long) and sizeof(char *) is coming as 8 bytes).
    For this I found a way how to run universal binary selecting architecture:
    arch -i386 ./TestApp
    This selects i386 architecture from fat binary and runs the application(sizeof(long) and sizeof(char *) is 4 bytes).
    However, my requirement is I should run universal binary on i386 as i386 application without using arch command.
    Are there any xcode settings to be made to make universal binary run as i386 application on 32 bit macos boot ??? Can we select architectural preferences for running universal binary application ??
    Please help.
    Regards,
    Sumanth

    This is the thing I am doing with my application:
    ioctlBuff.pvInputBuffer = Address of some structure;
    ioctlBuff.ulInputLength = sizeof(some structure);
    ioctlBuff.pvOutputBuffer = pOutputBuffer;
    ioctlBuff.ulOutputLength = dwOutputBufferLength;
    and calling: ioctl((int)pDevIO->m_hDevice, dwIoctl,&ioctlBuff);
    If I make sure driver is hit with the ioctl code I am calling(by maintaining sizeof third parameter in _IOWR('k', 0x854, typedef structure) to be same in driver and application), driver is getting hit with that ioctl code.
    And here is the main issue:
    now driver does:
    copyfromuser(&sRdmBuffer, psIoBuffer->InputBuffer, psIoBuffer->InputLength), it fails to copy as InputBuffer passed by user space is 64 bit pointer!!
    I conformed values i pass to copyfromuser are valid.
    BUT I DONT SEE ANY OF THESE ISSUES IF I USE
    arch -i386 ./TestApp
    for my universal binary as i386 set of text code is picked for execution!
    Thats why I wanted to load i386 arch of my universal binary. I dont want to use arch command.

  • It's impossible to install Windows 64 Bits on my Macbook Pro, why?

    Hey everybody,
    I was tryng for three days to install Windows (8 and 7 after) 64 bits version on my Macbook Pro and I can tell you that It's impossible...
    It's doesnt matter what I do, the PC does not recognize the bootable disk or usb for Windows.
    I followed these steps:
    - I downloaded the Windows 7 official ISO image to burn a DVD Setup after use the Boot Camp Assistant.
    - When I used the Boot Camp Assistant, I tried to "Download the latests Windows support software from Apple" but 2 minutes after I chose that option, the assistant alert me that the Server doesn't have the files anymore... so I had to simply use the install option BUT it requires that I put the Windows Installation CD on my PC and when I put it on it... the PC doesnt recognize it! My "solution": I mount a Virtual Drive with the ISO image of the DVD and now my Mac recognize the Installation CD so I can continue with the installation...
    - After that the PC was restarted and thats the last step that I reach because when It's tryng to start with the Installation Drive it's doesn't recognize... again!! A black screen appears with a text that say "Insert a bootable drive and press any key"... or something like that.
    So I'm stuck in this step because I was tryng to use another Installation CDs, burning it again and again, tryng with Windows 8 too and nothing happens.
    I tried to make an USB Bootable too but my Boot Camp Assistant doesnt have any option to make it (I read that some macbooks have an a 3rd option in his Boot Camp Assistant that prepare a USB with the ISO of any Windows Installation CD) so obviously whitout it was completely useless.
    I was tryng to make a bootable dvd with UDF format (cause I read that if the cd is not in that format It doesnt be recognize in Mac as a bootable drive...).
    What can I do? I know that Windows 32 Bits Systems run on my Mac but It should support 64 Bits Systems too (I was reading the compatibility of Boot Camp and Windows versions and It should run!).
    Please help me
    My Macbook Model is:
    Macbook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2010
    Processor 2,4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3
    Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB
    Software: OS X 10.9.2 (13C1021)
    Boot Camp Version: 5.1.2 (481)

    you can just download the bootcamp drivers manually
    http://www.apple.com/dk/support/bootcamp/
    and you can't
    : I mount a Virtual Drive with the ISO image of the DVD
    bootloader time nothing can read virtual drives you need a real dvd with the iso burned on it or to do the usb install way
    have you tried to view some of the tons of youtube guides which show you step by step how to install windows on bootcamp ?

  • Vista 64 bit and new MacBook Pro 17"

    Any idea where to get Boot Camp drivers for the new 17" MBPro? When trying to install Vista 64 bit the system claims there are no drivers available from the OS X disk or when trying to run the 2.1 update.
    Thanks!

    Macs that support Vista 64-bit:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846
    And, Boot Camp 2.1 drivers included in 10.5.4+ DVD
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1999
    If you don't have or see /BootCamp on your OEM or retail DVD that came with your 17" MacBook Pro, you may need to contact Apple Care or Customer Service.
    Even though the above article does not specifically mention the 17" model (newest and latest) I assume it is just that article(s) aren't always updated in a timely enough fashion.
    I would not bother with the download, or even via Apple SU if it does 'offer' 2.1, and just use your Leopard DVD. (If you do want to install or update, then be sure to create a Restore Point; use WinClone and/or Vista Ultimate PC Backup and Restore center and backup your system to external drive.

  • Target Disk Mode on Macbook Pro to Windows Vista?

    I am scheduled to take my Macbook Pro in for the NVidia Warranty repair and need to back up the hard drive (I know, I know...). I can't get the Macbook to boot at all b/c of the NVidia issue, except in Target Disk Mode.
    And the only other computer I have is Windows (I know, I know...this feels very cathartic, btw). Is it possible to have the Windows Vista computer connect to the Macbook via FireWire while the Macbook is in Target Disk Mode to temporarily back up my files on the Windows computer?
    I know I could pay for backup, but I'm cheap. So I'm trying to find a workaround.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Is it possible to have the Windows Vista computer connect to the Macbook via FireWire while the Macbook is in Target Disk Mode to temporarily back up my files on the Windows computer?
    It may or may not work depending on the PC's configuration, but a program such as MacDrive needs to be installed on the PC to enable it to read the Mac's hard drive in any case.

  • Photoshop CS5 64-Bit in the MacBook Pro

    My MacBook Pro came with the 64-Bit version of Photoshop CS5. Does the 32-Bit version work on the MacBook pro? And why can't the 64-Bit version use the "Import video frames to layers" function?
    Is there anyway to switch versions or make it so the 64-Bit version can use the "Import video frames to layers" function?

    Your questions really should be pointed towards an Adobe Photoshop forum. I was able to locate one for you at:

    Macs are 64-bit. But you may wish to skip AV software. It's really not needed.

  • No sound Windows 7, 64 bit running Bootcamp, MacBook Pro 64bit Snow Leopard

    Been running Windows like this successfully for over a year. Now, suddenly, no sound. Tried re-installing Cirrus Logic etc, but to no avail. Possibly linked to some recent software updates? Tried to reverse, but didn't fix problem.
    Have tried the various suggestions found via Google about compatability with Vista in Cirrus.
    Any suggestions would be very welcome.

    in bootcamp in osx one makes a driver cd which include apples drivers for all the hardware in the mac
    and one then install that in windows to get everything working
    do that rather then try to install drivers yourself
