64-bit OS on T61p's

How come there is no option to install any 64-bit OS's on the TP's?  Ideally, I'd like to get XP 64, but am I looking to purchase one OS factory-installed only to change it to 64-bit on my own?

  • About to Take the Plunge: Windows 7 64 Bit on T61p. Help me prepare please!

Gents I'm about to do a clean install of WIndows 7 64 bit onto my T61p to upgrade away from the wretched Vista Ultimate.  Can you please help me prepare for the transition?  What should I expect?  Anything I can do in advance to prepare as far as BIOS, drivers, etc?  Thank you in advance.  I use little to none of the ThinkVantage features.  Just plain vanilla user-- surf web, stream Itunes, Bloomberg for finance, etc.  Thanks again.

I clean installed W7 x64 on my T61p and it works a treat, as mentioned above by Aryeh Goretsky the card reader was the only obstinate item which TVSU didn't grab for me
Here's where to find the official Lenovo guide to clean installing W7.  In it it does state "The bios for each system being installed should be upgraded to the most current for each machine type. There are bios updates for Windows 7 that will be needed. The machine specific bios can be found on the Lenovo support website."
If you do decide you need to upadte the BIOS I very stronly urge you only to do so using the ISO bootable cd method.

  • T61P: Windows Vista SP1 X64: DVD player driver wont work

My 64-bit Vista SP1 T61P has stopped recognizing my DVD drive and I cannot fix the driver by either using WindowsUpdate or by using the ThinkPad SystemUpdate. I could not even find a separate driver for the DVD drive at the lenovo site.
    Any suggestions, anyone?

  • Docking station 64 bit

    Hi,
I´ve a Probook 6450b and I´ve installed a win 7 professional 64 bit, O´ve a Docking Sation and usb ports doesn´t work, anyone have any answer??
    Thanks
    Oscar

    Hello,
I realize this is almost a year late, but I have the exact same issue after installing Windows 7 (32-bit) on my T61p this past weekend.  I never had this problem with XP.
I've discovered though that this only happens if I close the laptop lid.  If I keep the laptop lid open, while in its docking station, then I don't seem to have this glitch.
Not sure if this will help you.  I've been trying to find a permanent fix but so far no luck.  If you or anyone has got one, I'd like to hear it.

Will   [ThinkVantage --> Create Recovery Media] Recovery CDs allow a clean installation of the Windows Vista version that came with my Thinkpad originally? In other words, is the Recovery CD all that I will need in order to be able to install Vista (even without the service partition) ?

  • Lenovo Bluetooth Laser mouse 41u5009 scroll wheel not working in Virtual PC

Firstly this is not a type I have a 41U5009 that is the model number printed on the bottom of the mouse and this mouse came direct from Lenovo with my T61p notebook.  For some reason to get drivers for this mouse you cannot simply type in the model number on the Lenovo site as it does not recognize it as a valid model number.
My issue is that the driver I have or the mouse does not allow the scroll wheel to work under MS virtual pc 2007.  I am running Vista 64 bit on the T61P laptop and the virtual pc I am running xp.  If I plug in other mice such as MS cordless mini mouse or HP standard mouse the wheel from those mice works in the VM.  But the wheel on the Lenovo mouse does not work, this makes me believe it is the Lenovo mouse that is the issue.  I have tried using the Lenovo mouse on another pc ( a clone pc) and have the same issue with the wheel not working.  I should point out that in the parent OS the wheel on the Lenovo mouse works fine.  I should also point out that in the VM every other function of the mouse works fine, it is just the wheel part that does not get recognized.

Sorry, but pressing F7 did not do anything I could see in the mobile browser. I had to check with the desktop browser to see what it was supposed to do, and I don't think this caret browsing function exists in the mobile version.
Also tried installing the latest non-beta mobile FIrefox alongside the beta, without syncing anything, and the nonfunctionality of mouse scrolling is present in that one, too. Am considering giving up on mobile Firefox on at least this device.
Note: in case this information is useful, the mouse scrolling works on the Firefox start page with the thumbnails for most used links, but not on any other pages.

  • Power Manager 4.42 Not Working T61p Vista 64-bit

ThinkVantage Power Manager is not working on my machine.  I first noticed this after System Update added several new ThinkVantage programs, including PM version 4.41a several weeks ago, but I can't point with any certainty a specific cause or beginning to the problem.
PM now stops working every time during initial (power-on) machine boot-up showing message: "Power Manager Stopped Working".  This seems to happen whenver it is installed by system update.  When I have tried installing PM manually, it simply refuses to install, giving a short message saying it cannot run on my system.  Earlier versions ran OK before.  Microsoft Problem Reports and Solutions is of course clueless about this (and most other crashes).
I have tried uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling both PM and the latest PM driver in several different sequences, but nothing seems to work.  I was hopeful that a recent upgrade to PM version 4.42 (via System Update) might solve the problem, but same thing happens and manually installation still doesn't work.  I also uninstalling Access Connections (which has given me other problems), rebooted, and tried loading both PM and PM Driver, but with the same results.  Something funny going on...
I have ThinkPad 61p (6459-CTO) with 4GB RAM, running Vista Ultimate 64-bit with NIS 2009.  I have installed the most recent BIOS and have other up-to-date Lenovo software via System Update.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I have tried several more things, including upgrading to Visual C++ 2008 in an attempt to get my system to install TV Power Manager 4.42 (or earlier versions).  I still get the same message when I attempt to install manually: "cannot run on this system". Same thing happens when trying to load an older version 4.20a that I found through the forum.
I have been successful in loading the version that came pre-installed on my computer (found in SWTools folder), and that seems to work, though with very basic functionality.  It appears to be Version 2.11.
I would really like to find a way to install a newer version (preferably 4.42), as it seems this is needed to run later versions of other TV software.  I have T61p (6459-CTO) running Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and the BIOS and drivers are all up to date, as per Lenovo site.
    Thanks for any advice.

  • (SOLVED) Can't Connect Wiimote after Windows 7 64-bit install (T61p)

Hello. I have a T61p that originally had Vista 32-bit on it. I used to use my Wiimote as a gamepad, I'd just have to press the sync button and it would work with the computer. Since I installed Windows 7 64-bit though, it won't. I've turned the Bluetooth adapter on and off with Fn-F5 several times.
I tried BlueSoliel and it worked yesterday but not today. Also it is an evaluation copy, and I do not plan on buying the full product.
edit: okay I uninstalled BlueSoliel and installed the 64 bit Vista driver and I can connect the Wiimote to the computer, however, it won't register any buttons being pressed, and when I go the the Game Controller Test screen it is empty.
edit2: I forgot you need to use GlovePIE. Seems to be working fine now. Sorry for wasting anyone's time.

No problem, thanks for posting your fix.

  • T61p with Windows XP - how to change this from 32 bit to 64 bit?

I am in urgent need to have my T61p converted from 32 bit to 64 bit. I am currently using windows xp professional 2002 sp2. Would someone let me know how to do this? Thanks a million. Carlee

    Hi there,
Well, if you have Windows XP 64, then it's a matter of making a choice of running both side-by-side or dumping one for the other. If you don't have 64-bit, then you'll need to procure yourself the 64-bit version of the OS. It's not a matter of simply "activating" something, or installing a patch of some sort.
The 64-bit version uses a different set of core files that are incompatible with the 32-bit XP altogether, it's not a simple upgrade as all the drivers will require re-installation as well (applies not only to the OS, but to all peripherals that you have as well).
    Hope this helps

  • T61p: SATA (AHCI) & ATA drivers, Win. 7 64-bit?

I have a T61p running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. ThinkVantage System Update recommends that I install the “Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver for Windows 64bit”, version v8.9.2.1002, which it tells me has not been previously installed. When I try to do so, it tells me that the installation has failed.
Notes with this driver indicate that it works with the following controllers:
    Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller
    Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
    Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller
    Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E/M SATA RAID Controller.
However, my machine’s Device Manager shows that it (at least thinks) it has the following controllers:
Intel(R) ICH8M SATA AHCI Controller – 2829 with an Intel driver, version 7.0.0.1013, dated 2010/06/08
    Intel(R) ICH8M Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 2850 with a Microsoft driver, version 6.1.7601.17514, dated 2006/06/21
(and ‘ATA channel’ controllers and the Ricoh card reader, etc controller). So perhaps it’s not surprising that ThinkVantage System Update gets confused.
I’m bothered by this because I’m about to upgrade the original Hitachi Travelstar 160 GB primary HDD with a Seagate  Momentus XT 750 GB hybrid hard drive, and I would like my machine to have the most up-to-date driver for its AHCI controller. (I’m not planning a RAID configuration, but I want the best shot at getting NCQ working* and avoiding problems with matching 6 Gb/s to 1.5 Gb/s SATA speeds.)
So my question is: How can I ensure I have the latest drivers for these controllers? A Google search yields conflicting information...
I would be very grateful for any responses.
(*Apparently, “Windows Vista and Windows 7 also natively support AHCI, but their AHCI support (via the msahci service) must be manually enabled via registry editing if controller support was not present during their initial install.”)
    Best regards,
    Cian Buckley

    Hello,
My understanding (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) is that all ThinkPad T61p's use Intel's 965 chipset.
The latest chipset device drivers are v9.3.1.1019 and available from here on Intel's support site.
The latest storage device drivers are b10.8.0.1003 and available from here on Intel's support web site.

  • HP Officejet 4255 driver for Windows 7, 32 bit. Not in pull up list or OS(can't update)

HP Officejet 4255 driver for Windows 7, 32 bit.
Driver is not in pull up list and not in OS(can't update OS basic). Almost all series are listed but 4200 series is missing.
After upgrade to Windows 7, it has become a problem. Some solution should be given.
    Can someone help?
    Regards,
    Raul

Ok, I found in the Net the drive 7uw706ww.zip, which is Version 6.1.4.2, while the updated version is 6.1.10.5 (7UW708WW).
I tried again the GPS, and it wasn't working.
Anyway, before downgrading, I tried to reinstall the new driver, downloading and installing the .exe instead going through System Update.
Result: now GPS is working (same place, same conditions, just 5 minutes later)!
Don't know where the difference is...

  • Downgrading from Win 7 64 bit to 32 bit

I know it's odd, but I have programs that won't run in 64 bit windows 7 but work fine in 32 bit win 7.
I have a G570 (4334) (64 bit win 7) and would love to download or get Lenovo disks for the 32 bit windows 7.
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS007940
Looks to be the spot to create such a disk? As I would like to do a clean install of the 32 bit version with the Lenovo drivers and such. I don't know if that will create a disk or not. Nor do I see anyway to order such a disk.
OR could I use my old OEM disk 32 bit win 7 from my old computer and the key from the G570?
I have three computers and three Win7 keys, one for Win 7 64 bit professional, one for Win 7 Home Premium, and the one on the laptop for home premium 64 bit. I know the Home Premium doesn't care if it's 32 or 64 bit.
My laptop is brand new. I've only tried to install my most critical program and it chokes on 64 bit win 7 (it doesn't like XP Mode on my Win 7 64 bit Professional either, but runs beautifully on my 32 bit win 7 machine -- but that one is going to be leaving the state when I give it to my daughter). Anyway, formatting the drive is of no concern to me as nothing critical is on it. Suggestions? Links?
    THANKS!

    Hello,
Can I ask what the program is that will not run in the 64-bit version of Windows 7?
It is pretty rare to see a program that runs in the 32-bit version and not the 64-bit.  Usually it's tied to something like the program installing 32-bit device driver, or having some 16-bit (e.g., Windows 3.1-era) code in it, neither of which are supported in the 64-bit version of Windows 7.
If it's not something like the above two scenarios, than perhaps by finding out more about the program we can find a way to make it work without having to go through the inconvenience of reloading the operating system.

  • Upgrade T61 6457-CTO to Windows 7 (64 bit)?

    HI,
I have a T61  6457-CTO running windows XP pro.  After 2 years of multiple versions of office & Adobe Creative Suite as well as other software, it is now very sluggish.  Since I am getting new office & Adobe software I thought I might I upgrade to Windows 7 (64 bit).  I only have 2 GB of RAM, but I can upgrade that to 4 Gb.
    I have a few questions:
     - Can I run the 64 bit version?  I ran the Windows upgrade advisor & the hardware was fine - it was the lenovo software that would have potential problems.  I assume that lenovo support has all the drivers that I would need?
    -  What is involved in installing the new OS?
    - How does the computer know to switch from the 32 bit to 64 bit?
    - will I lose the lenovo partition & all the lenovo software?  Do I care?
    - Has anyone had problems with this switch?
Is windows 7 much faster on this machine? especially with the web & graphic software I am using?
My other option is to restore my computer to factory settings & load the new software.
Any suggestions?   I appreciate any advice or comments on how this upgrade might have gone for you.

    Hello,
There is no automatic migration path from Microsoft Windows XP to Microsoft Windows 7, nor is there a migration path between 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions of Windows, although it may be possible to do this with third party tools.  This means a clean installation, followed by reloading the applications and data.
I run 64-bit versions of Windows 7 on a ThinkPad T61 (Type: 7664-1LU) and a T61p (Type: 6459-CTO), so given my experiences, along with your own report from the Windows Upgrade Advisor it sounds like you have a 64-bit system.  You can also verify this by running a program such as Intel's Processor Identification Utility, which will tell you if your CPU supports EMT64, which is Intel's name for a 64-bit architecture.
Once you have finished installing Windows 7, you can install Lenovo's ThinkVantage System Update software, which will download and install all remaining ThinkVantage drivers and software for your T61.
I've always done clean installs of Windows 7 to a new hard disk drive on my ThinkPads, so I am unsure of what happens to the Lenovo service and recovery partition.  More information about upgrading to Windows 7 on ThinkPads can be found here on Lenovo's support web site, so maybe the answer can be found there.

  • Switch from Windows 7 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit

I have just received my X201 tablet from a Lenovo reseller with Win 7 32-bit installed. The system has 2GB of RAM, but I have another 2GB stick that I want to insert and would like to upgrade to Win 7 64-bit in order to utilize all of it. I don't want to do a clean install of Windows 7 because then I will lose all of the X201-specific utilities that come installed on my tablet. Does anyone here know how I can go about doing this? I see the recovery partition on my hard drive; could I use that to reinstall Windows and select 64-bit during installation? I would figure this out myself, but it could take a long time and I would like to get it done quickly so I can start installing all of my applications. Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Muftobration, welcome to the forum,
unfortunately you will not be able to recover to x64 from the recovery partition, it only includes the x86 version.
But, all is not lost Before you format the drive you need to back up all files, or lose them. I strongly recommend also copying the C:\SWTOOLS folder to another medium, this has all the Lenovo Utilities and Drivers for your system, although maybe not all for W7 x64. You will not regret doing this.
You should then prepare yourself by grabbing the Intel Chipset driver, your LAN driver, the correct WLAN driver for your system, Lenovo System Update and MS dot NET Framwork 3.5. These should also be copied or downloaded to other medium.
Before proceeding you should also create a set of recovery discs should you at any time want to, need to, switch back to the x86 version.
Once you're sure that you have everything safe and sound you can install W7 x64 and have no worries about deleting all partitions thus regaining the space used up by the service partition.
After W7 x64 has installed you need to install the Chipset driver and restart the system.
    Install dot NET Framework 3.0.
Load the LAN and WLAN if they're missing in device manager.
Install and run System Update, let it run a couple of times to be sure.
At this point your system should be pretty much completely installed, if you seem to be missing drivers they'll probably be the Intel AMT and Active Protection. Any other "goodies" can be obtained from the copy of the SWTOOLS folder you made.
    Hope this helps
