64 bit software on x86 hardware

I have a Windows XP machine that is 32 bit (x86) hardware.  The machine was sent to a company that was supposed to upgrade to Windows 7.  This is an x86 system.
The company upgraded using Windows 7 64-bit software.  The system now seems to have some issues with program functionality (i.e. Word randomly closing when I try to click on a open document).  And is very, very slow.
The company said that if the computer allowed them to load 64-bit software, than the computer was 64-bit compatible and it was the correct software to load.
Can anyone provide me with some insight/opinion into this?
Regards,
Diane

If the processor didn't support the x86_64 architecture (quite possible for older Windows PCs), Windows 7 64-bit would fail to install or run. So that it's installed means you do have a processor supporting 64-bit software.
However, do you know how much RAM your PC has? Microsoft recommend at least 2 GB for the 64 bit edition of Windows 7, vs 1 GB for the 32-bit edition. Windows will allow installations with less and the result is usually poor performance. So if your PC has
less than 2GB of RAM, complain that the company you dealt with should not have installed the 64-bit edition of Windows 7. (If it has more than 3GB, on the other hand, 64-bit is definitely the right option.)
Other things you can try:
Switch to the Windows 7 Basic or even the Windows Classic theme. (Right-click the Desktop and click Personalize.) This reduces RAM usage and can help performance on lower-spec systems.
Open the Device Manager (right-click Computer and choose Manage) and check there aren't any warnings in the devices. In particular if you don't have proper graphics drivers installed you can get a sluggish experience.

  • Max OS X Snow Leopard on x86 hardware

I always wanted to use a Macintosh, so I went and got some software. However, I'm afraid I don't know what to do, it's a .dmg, and that file type won't work on Windows x86 hardware, or atleast I don't think it will. I want to dual boot it with my Windows XP. So, like would it install to a separate partition and even run the installer if I tried to boot using it, and then installed Mac OS X Snow Leopard, even though it is a .dmg?

    Hi Lyoko92;
In addition to what Baltwo said it is illegal to install OS X on non-Apple hardware.

  • Creative software wont detect Hardware

I've been spending days and nights on this.
    ?OS : Windows 7 Home 64bit
?Sound card : X-fi Titanium Fatalty PCI express
After plugging in the card to the MB, Windows 7 detected a card there. downloaded generic sound drivers and called the card High Definition Audio Device or something of the sorts. Using the creative auto update prgram, it told me to download the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Driver 2.7.0007. When installing, it would give me an error saying there is a more up to date driver installed already. I know that "HD audio Device" is not the most up to date drivers. I tried uninstalling the drivers then installing the creative one. Win7 constantly installs its own drivers over and over again. I have Home, so i cant use the group policy trick to turn off auto driver install. So i looked through the CD that came with the card and found a force overwrite driver install. Clicked it, Software installed just fine. Restarted windows, installed the latest card drivers perfectly fine. This took me about 3 hours. Not wanting to bang my head anymore i went to bed.
?The next day I hit the auto update and its wants me to download a bunch of these creative software packages. I only downloaded Creative Console Launcher 2.6.35, Creative Diagnostics 5..02. Both of these prgrams do not detect the card and will not start. I tried re-installing, starting it up in compatibility with vista, xp. Nothing. I did not want to delve deeper into this knowing i would spend hours non stop trying to figure this out.
?The next day Win7 updates tell me to install "Creative - Audio - Creative X-Fi Audio Processor (WDM)", Thinking that Win7 finally recognizes the card, i install. Now there is no system tray icon for audio and the drivers rolled back to 2.6.3? Along with this Win7 update, creative audio control panel was installed and also does not detect any sound device, yet sound is playing just fine and i can access the sound settings through the windows audio panel. I have downloaded Product Identification Module Update. Software stil does not detect sound card.
? Yes i have read through many other post across the forums. Sadly, they were lacking a lot of details. I will be updating this post realsing any new details i come across in trying to fix this issues. As to the main point behind this, I would like to know if there is a fix somewhere for my specific problem. That problem being, I am not able to use my soundcard to its full potential and i would like very much to.
    ## After Several registry cleanings and restarts, the tray icon is back again.
Using the "Creative System Information" program, it does in fact detect the correct hardware and drivers. If anyone would like to see the Creative System Information Report just ask and i'll send it.
    ### Experimenting with the software on the CD, the Creative Volume Panel works, and the AutoMode swticher works just fine. So why is it that these programs work and detect a souncard, but the others dont?

*Re: Creative software wont detect Hardware& The beat goes on. In searching the Creative web site, I couldn't find my web cam ?model listed and in the download area, it was written that if the model is not present, they no longer support it with updated drivers specifically for W-7 . I have two computers that I have tried to install the web cam on:
-one running 64 bit W-7. This one sees the mike and ear piece but not the video.(no green light on the camera); attempts to load the drivers from the disc that came with the camera failed.(Repeated several times)
-one running 32 bit W-7. This one sees the video camera which shows my face on the screen so it works; the audio for the ear piece and the mike can not be seen saying no sound card is present. We took some cards out ?from the original home entertainment model relating to tv and such?but the audio card function?should still be on the motherboard. This computer did run the web cam before in XP with all the extra cards present.
I think the systems?are using Realtek drivers.

I have just installed 'Parallels Desktop 7' for Mac on to my Macbook Pro.
I have bought Windows 7 to intall and I have two options - 32 bit or 64 bit software.
Does anybody know which is better?
    I will be installing:
Office for Mac Home and Business
    AutoCADD 2010
    etc

    Hi wjosten,
Is there any particular reason you say 64 bit?

  • My iMac is not "64-bit clean". Can it run 64-bit software?

I have an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac that is about 4 years old. Apparently it cannot boot into the 64-bit kernel. Can it still run 64-bit software?

How have you determined your machine will not run Snow Leopard in 64 bit mode?
To tell whether it can or cannot open Terminal and run:
    ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
It will return either “EFI32″ or “EFI64.” If it's EFI64 congratulations it will run in 64 bit.
However please remember there are still very few applications that take advantage of 64 bit architecture so even the newer machines that can run 64bit apps don't see any advantages.

    Yes, it is possible.
You may download the Oracle bi 11g client tools here,
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bi-enterprise-edition/downloads/bus-intelligence-11g-165436.html
...you'll simply need the Oracle Business Intelligence Developer Client Tools Installer (11.1.1.5.0)

  • Affordable x86 Hardware

I'm getting pretty frustrated with trying to make Solaris 11 work on my x86 hardware. I've got an old gigabyte motherboard and a bunch of PCI SIL3114 cards that worked great on Solaris 10. Upgrading to Solaris 11 was pretty painful, though. I've come to the conclusion that something is wrong with one of my SIL3114 cards, but I can't replace it anymore. The closest thing I can get is a SIL3124 but Solaris won't even boot with that card in. The display gets corrupted on the boot screen and I never get to the login screen.
At this point, I think I need to start over. New motherboard, new PCIe -> SATA controllers, etc.
    My question:
Does anybody know of a reasonably priced motherboard w/ PCIe as well as a (maybe not reasonably priced) PCIe -> SATA controller that works with Solaris 11 without spending weeks trying to make it work? I started looking through the hardware compatability list for things that are "reported to work" but all of the motherboards I found were either discontinued or 300+ dollars. That's a little ridiculous for what is basically a glorified file server. Frankly, if it's going to cost me that much to get it working I'm going to give up on Solaris and buy a Drobo or try to find an operating system that doesn't cause me to rip my hair out.
    Thanks for your help,
    Pete

    Hi
Solaris 11 supports Xfree86 so you can find a plenty of Graphics drivers or you can get a generic xfree86 driver that will work for sure .

  • DAC 10.1.3.4.1 Server on Windows (64 bit) and Linux x86 (64 bit)?

    Hi Friends,
Please confirm wheteher Oracle Business Intelligence Data Warehouse Administration Console 10.1.3.4.1 Server is supported on
Windows (64 bit) and Linux x86 (64 bit)
Because from edelivery.oracle.com i could see the downloads only for windows and Linux and not specified as 32/64 - bit
so will it mean that the same dump is used for both 32 and 64 bit
    1) Oracle Business Intelligence Data Warehouse Administration Console 10.1.3.4.1 for Microsoft Windows (V16377-01)
can the above dump is used for both 32 and 64 bit windows?
    2) Oracle Business Intelligence Data Warehouse Administration Console 10.1.3.4.1 for Linux x86 (V16378-01)
can the above dump is used for both 32 and 64 bit Linux?
The reason is because for OBIA 7.9.6.3 configuration both the Informatica Power Centre and DAC Server should co-exist
and i could see seperate installer for 32 and 64 bit for both Windows and Linux whereas i couldn't see it for DAC Server
    Please confirm .
    Regards,
    DB

It is supported on both platforms. With Linux however, if you have any issues you can to install in a windows environment, then copy over the folder structure. Also, you can possibly run into issues running the setup.exe on 64bit windows. When you open the install directory, go to dac/disk1/install and run the executable for win32. win64bit can return an error where it says it cannot create certain temp directories. It is a known java bug you can find in the support website.

  • How to open 32 bit software on a MBPR

I Have a slide scanner but because it's a few years old, it's a 32 bit software device. How can I have my MacBook Pro retina 13" open the software? The instructions from the manufacturer say to right click on the app (SilverFast)  and select Get Info, then click on the check box to make it open in 32 bit but there is no check box to allow that to work.

OK... good news! I found a new driver for the scanner, circa 2011, and installed that plus I got a response from the software developer
('I assume that you accidentally used the "Get Info" of the SilverFast
installation folder instead of the SilverFast 8.app itself. Please try
to right click the SilverFast 8 Dock Icon -> Options -> Show in Finder
As a result of this action,  a new Finder window will open and the
SilverFast 8.app will already be highlighted in this folder. Please
try to set SilverFast 8 to 32bit mode using this way again.')
After installing and following the above comments, I then found a check box for 'run in 32 bit' to allow me to run the app and scanner. I haven't had time to test this yet but I should be able to test it later this week... very busy training all this week.

  • Sun FastEthernet PCI with MII and x86 Hardware

    Hello
I have two Sun FastEthernet PCI cards, each with one RJ45 port and a port labeled "MII". Would I be able to use these cards in a PC (Dell Precision 7xx) or x86 hardware in general?
    Thanks
    Matt

Find the barcode paper sticker on the NIC and read the numbers. Report back here with what you find. That will be the actual part number of the product, in a format of something like
501-XXXXyyyyWe would be interested in only the first seven digits.
I vaguely remember that MS Operating Systems (at least from Win9x through WinXP) should recognize it natively from its chipset manufacturer. You wouldn't damage anything by just installing it to a PCI slot and booting your system. Your mileage may vary.
I'm guessing you may find it to be this *<--link*
(Ignore the `notes` on that web page, and the embedded URL's are broken as well. It's not a Sun Microsystems web site.)

  • Anyone running Communications Suite 5 on X86 hardware

    Hi,
We recently installed communications Suite 5 on X86 hardware and have run into numerous bug and issues. We are wondering if there are others that have installed Comm. Suite 5 on X86 that are willing to share their experiences and possibly collaborate with us.
We've contacted support many times and on many occasions we get bug reports and patches that refer to bug fixes for Sparc Hardware but it doesn't seem that many people (including Sun support) use x86.
Any information or comments would be appreciated.
    thanks

    Hi Shane,
    I appreciate the response.
We are as patched as we can. We have also been putting in binary files, IDRs and T patches as recommended by our support person(s), and many times having to back them out because the patch caused as many problems as it has fixed. The only time the system was at all stable and working to what we thought was proper was during our (as we later found out, minimal) testing. Once we actually had most of our user population using it and putting it under load we've had problem after problem. Including things such as the Calendar server crashing ever 1-2 hours, Calendar database getting corrupted and then deleted by failing hot backups/archiving, mal-formatted email message, ics* attributes being deleted for users when setting permission via outlook connector, uwc, or cal express, and numerous JavaScript errors.
Maybe the Sparc version is just as buggy but I don't think that it is a far stretch to think that completely different hardware platforms would not always have the same bugs. Especially considering that we are talking completely different architectures with different endian-ness, memory registers, etc...
I'm sure a vast majority of bugs in jsp, java, and javascript code can be seen between platforms but as noted above we have been given binaries which, maybe have the same code base but wont necessarily cause the same bugs. Maybe the bugs are there but on many occasions I have been given a bug number which I can't pull any information about (being that it is an internal bug number I suppose). So maybe the bugs are in both sparc and x86 but I have no way to know this until the official patch is release or the bug is publicly available.
I posted here, so that I could get a better idea of what others are seeing with their systems. Another reason I ask this and stated that it seemed like very few people are using comm suite 5 on x86, because from the start of our testing and throughout the last 5 months we have repeatedly asked our Sun partner, Sun support personel, Sun account managers, and anyone else involved, if they could refer us to someone that has a comm suite 5 deployment on x86 and as yet we have not gotten a single response.
With this said, I am simply stating my experiences up until now and on many occassions (of the nearly 40 cases that we have opened with support) I have repeatedly been told things like my only test platform is a sparc ultra 5, or we can't recreate your issue on a similar system (similar as in sparc and not x86 or deployed on a single host and not a DWP setup like ours). I've created test accounts for support to be able to log into our uwc so that they can see what we are seeing.
I have always thought very highly of Sun but this has been changing slowly over the last 5 months or so.
You asked for bug numbers, here are some, maybe I am wrong that they are particular to x86, maybe it is because we have a DWP setup, I've been wrong before.
    6590680,6591407
Again, I do appreciate any response, and I would like to say thanks to all the support persons that we have been dealing with to get our issues resolved.
As another aside, it might be helpful to know what our setup might be like so here it is:
We have three servers 2 Sun Fire x2100's, one Sun Fire x4200, a Sun Stroragetek 6140 Disk Array and a Sun Storedge C4 Tape Library.
x2100 is used for front end calendar server, UWC, calendar express, messenger express (users don't go directly to messenger express, but we have used calendar express for some workarounds temporarily and most users don't use or know about either calendar or messenger express, they just use UWC).
x2100 for MMP and MTA, this is connected via LMTP to our backend Message store.
x4100 for Messages Store and back end Calendar Server, our x4100 also is running a Solaris Zone where we have our Directory server (this zone in on zfs as was recommended by our Sun partner, until recently, I'm told this was a bad idea)). The x4100 message store (zfs), calendar database (zfs), and mboxlist db (zfs) is stored on the 6140 disk array. The x4100 is connected to the 6140 via 2 HBA's through a Qlogic Fibre channel switch.
thanks again and sorry for the blogish style post.

  • How to make 32 bit software to contact 64 bit oracle

    Hi
I m using Oracle 10G 64 bit in Windows 64 bit server. Our Product is a 32 bit software and when i m trying to create database using our product it is throwing JDBC Driver error. So i installed 32 bit Oracle client and set the user env variables for client oracle home and path. but still i m not able to create the database because it is taking the client Oracle home which should not happen. i m totally confused now and not sure how to achieve the end goal. Can anyone help me on how to contact 64 bit Oracle using a 32 bit client software.
    Thanks
    Ram

    Hi Aman
Sorry for late reply, was sick.
we ship the product to the customer where it is supposed to do it this way.
below is the error we are getting:
Data store 'historical' is broken: status is DRIVER.
This is specific to our product and This says that 32 bit product with its driver is not able to contact 64 bit oracle driver. So i introduced Oracle Client where our 32 bit product will speak with our 32 bit oracle client and oracle client inturn will speak with 64 bit oracle server. But again there was a confusion in this setup. When i did the Environment variables configuration, our product is trying to create the database in 32 bit client oracle home path which is not correct. Kindly suggest me if u have any idea on this.
    Thanks
    Ram
