64-bit Technical Question from Apple Insider

Hello Everyone,
I just posted a question in response to an article at Apple Insider:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/09/02/insidemac_os_x_snow_leopard_64bits.html
I thought that some people here might have either some insight to my question, or just might be interested in the article. Thanks!
Contents of post from Apple Insider:
I have a pretty extensive background with Windows and the x86 architecture, but still consider myself somewhat of a newbie when it comes to Macs. However, with Apple's switch to Intel CPUs, the basic architecture of Macs and PCS are largely the same now. Which leads me to my question. The x86 architecture was extended to 64-bit, similar to how the original 8086 was extended to 32-bit. The main point here is that to access the 32-bit features of the processor, the processor is switched to what is called "Protected Mode" to enable it. Similarly, to access the 64-bit mode of an x64 processor, it has to be switched to what is called "Long Mode." Long Mode is necessary to access the extra GPR (General Purpose Registers) and other features unique to x64. When running a 32-bit operating system, the x64 processor is switched to "Legacy Mode", which is unable to use the extra GPRs or other features of an x64 CPU. So, now on to my question.
32-bit versions of Windows have (as expected) a 32-bit kernel, and run in "Legacy Mode" on a 64-bit processor. 64-bit versions of WIndows have a 64-bit kernel, and run in "Long Mode", which allows 32-bit applications to run using a feature called "Compatibility Mode". So, does anyone here know how this applies to Snow Leopard? I mean, if you are using the 32-bit kernel in Snow Leopard, is the processor in Long Mode or is it in Legacy Mode? Does OS X boot the processor in Long Mode, but runs the kernel in Compatibility mode? That seems to be the best option, as it would allow exposure to the extra GPRs and stuff. However, I have been unable to find this information posted anywhere. Thanks!

Hi AppleMan1958,
The processor modes are not a fixture of BIOS or Windows, as they are a function of the x86 architecture. These modes (there are several, if you are interested check this wiki article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86#Operating_modes) are how the architecture maintains binary compatibly with programs that date back to 1978 (at least from an ABI level, there are other things that may prevent them from running on modern computer). As an interesting side note, MS-DOS is a 16-bit operating system, but many of the popular games (like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D) are 32-bit, so how does a 32-bit program run on a 16-bit OS? By the use of the ever-so-popular DOS Extender (anyone remember DOS4G?). The DOS extender switches the processor into "Protected" Mode, which is the native 32-bit mode of Intel 80386 and newer processors. I am thinking that Snow Leopard either runs in "Long Mode" and just runs the kernel as a 32-bit process in "Compatibility Mode", or there may be some sort of "extender" similar to how we got 32-bit programs to run in DOS. Thanks!
Rich S.

forget answers of security questions from apple account

that is the new security system
it secures your account to be unaccessible for you! that is the highest security level!
usually should have the option to reset your account by sending instructions to an additional email address. by i don't know since when apple added this additional email address thing...
but in general such security question system is kinda weak and unsecure... it opens up the doors for everybody in your life to hack and crack your account...

  • I cannot receive any rescue email of security question from apple.

    even in the spam folder
    How can I receive it.
I am sure that no wrong information is entered

The only other way to reset the questions would be to call Apple Support at 1-800- MY-APPLE and have the account security team look at your ID.  They will ask you for a temporary support pin and one other piece of secure information from the account, such as your current security questions, the credit card linked to the account, a device serial number, or a verification code that they can send to your devices.  The support pin can be gained by going to appleid.apple.com and using the Manage your Apple ID button to log in to your ID.  The button to generate it will be in the lower-right corner of the Passwords and Security section.  The support pin cannot be skipped, but the second piece of information for the verification can be whatever of the options they give works best for you.
Once they have the support pin and one other piece of information to confirm your identity, they can reset your security question without needing to send you an email.  Just sign out of appleid.apple.com while they send the reset, and when you sign back in the Passwords and Security section will change to ask you for new security questions and your birthdate.
    Good luck!

When I attempt to import the well organized Music folder located on my from C drive only 6 out 10 gigs are copied. Even worse, many of the iTune converted files are duplicates.
It is a long process to manually identify and delete each duplicate.
I was pleased to see that there is a view duplicate under the view tab. I was disappointed to discover there is no button to simply delete the dupes.
I have downloaded and run the patch for Windows Vista (7.2). I have deleted all the files from iTunes and imported again. Each time I get a similar duplication problem, but how many of my songs it (randomly) downloads varies. It is always way less than I have in the windows folder.
I am converting most of these files from .wma to mp3 format.
Since the help line informs me that they do not support computers that run a 64 bit system is there anyone out here in cyberspace that has any constructive advice?
    Thank you,

Sometimes importing problems can be worked around by doing less files at a time. Try doing 100-200 at a time instead of telling it to do all of them.

  • I want to put windows 7 on my iMac. Do I use Windows 7, 64 bit System Builder or do I use a "retail copy" of the Windows 7, 64 bit ? Microsoft says I should use the System Builder copy. A technical support individual from Apple said use the "retail copy"

A Microsoft technical advisor said that the "retail copy" of Windows 7, 64 bit Home Premium would not work with Boot Camp to put the Windows operating system on the IMac. She said that I would have to use the System Builder copy of Windows 7 to put it on my iMac. An Apple technical advisor told me that I had to use the "retail copy" of Window 7 because that was the one used by Apple when they developed the Boot Camp program.  I have also seen some articles from Apple that suggests that both copies of Windows 7 would work OK. Does anyone have any experience that shows which one or both I should purchase to put on my computer?

    Welcome to ASC!
I used the 64-bit System Builder Edition when I bootcamped my 2010 iMac a couple of years ago. Worked perfectly--installed a very lean system. Without all the extra cr@pware that comes preinstalled on name-brand Win computers, the SBE OS actually works darned well.
However, that was under Mac OS 10.6.8 which remains on that computer for compatibilty reasons not related to Windows. Haven't BCed any newer Mac OS, so your mileage may vary.

You will need to use third-party software to transfer music from your phone to the iTunes Library. I recommend Phone to Mac - Pod to Mac | Macroplant.com.

Can anyone help? I am trying to connect my sons iPod to burn some music to it but I keep getting a message pop up stating that this version of iTunes is not compatible with this iPod and I need to remove my version of iTunes and install the 64-bit version. Hi Tintin01,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you're being repeatedly prompted to install the 64-bit version of iTunes, I'd suggest first completely uninstalling iTunes and all its related components using the steps found here:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Once you've uninstalled iTunes and its components, install the latest version of iTunes found here:

I would like to use Turbotax for mac.  I am a new user and just bought my Imac desktop a few weeks ago.  Can I purchase and download the software from Apple?  I do not have an optical drive so I need to use the download method.

Thank you for your reply.  I may not have phrased my question correctly but what I was ondering is whether Apple sells this software download or whether it is only available thru Intuit.  I have tried severl other vendors (Micro Center, Costco, Bjs Wholesale) and none of them have it available for download.  Must I go thru Intuit only if I use this method?

  • HT201272 I have recently picked up an Apple TV. When I go to the movies tab, there are less movies available there than there are in my i-Tunes account. I've done some looking around at questions from others, but haven't found an answer that works for me.

I have recently picked up an Apple TV. When I go to the movies tab, there less movies available there than what is available in my i-Tunes library. I have 38 movies showing in my library but only 23 are showing in the Movies tab on the Apple TV. After researching this a little, there are only 23 movies showing under Purchased in the Quicklinks of my i-Tunes account. The majority of my collection are digital copy downloads that came from DVD purchases. Some of the missing movies were added in the past couple of months, the rest are a year-or-so old. I have done some looking around at questions from others, but I have not found an answer that will fix my situation. How do I update my library to get ALL of my movies to reflect that they were "Purchased"(as it says they were in their Properties)?

The pros and cons of to CC or not to CC have been done to death
Its a fact the CC model will work for some, especially newbies and small businesses.
The risks associated with the CC model have been well documented.
For long term users of CS perpetuals its generally a large hike up in cost compared to the upgrade system.
Then there are the....... Adobe can rot it hell...... group who will never subscribe
To each their own, you do the math to suit your cashflow whatever that is and then make an informed decision
To those on the CC model, I'd like to offer some practical advice.........do not allow automatic updates.........make regular backups............develop an exit strategy of alternatives for when you can no longer afford the subscription costs............never ever assume that the Adobe update is bug free

Thank you for that post, and the advice. I just happen to be one of those who it does work for. I've been around long enough to know that CC isn't going to work for everyone(the large publishing/radio/web company I work for isn't upgrading to CC because of the costs involved). But it does for me as I potentially venture out into the full-time freelancing world and away from the more structured big office environment. I can't make decisions based on what is best for anyone else, or what will hurt or help Adobe. Just what affects me, and that's all.
