64-bit v 32-bit Kernal

Hi I have converted my startup to 64-bit using "32- or 64-bit Kernel Startup Mode Selector" application.
This has definitely made this machine a lot faster...:-) Instead of a blink of an eye it now operates in a very very fast blink of an eye:-)
I guess it enables the whole 16Gig of RAM
No problems; print driver etc work just fine.

I also use that program and definitely it is a big change, but there are some programs that are not supporting the 64 bit kernel, so it crashes when that happens just boot up to 32 bit mode, but yes very very fast when you boot into 64bit kernel.

  • Mountain Lion won't start with 32-bit kernal

I'm trying to update my Sony NEX-5 to version 5, and every time I click the installer, it says that it runs on a 32-bit kernal.
I tried starting up in 32 bit by holding the 3 and 2 keys, but this doesn't seem to do anything. I remember when I was on Snow Leopard, I could update my NEX-5 without any 32-bit startup necessary. Looking at some forums, even when people were on Snow Leopard they needed to startup in 32-bit...but I didn't.
Why doesn't it start up in 32-bit mode?
Why doesn't the application work on 64-bit? (Chrome is 32-bit...that still works on 64-bit)
Why has Sony even done this to us?
Running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on the 2012 21.5" iMac.

Yes, the 64-bit kernel is not supported for downloading the firmware update. You may use your neighbors or friends computer to download the firmware. You can also send the Camera to our service center for getting the firmware installed:
    Haha! Very funny Sony!
Well, I have a Canon 650D now anyway, and the update isn't a big deal. Just would be nice to update it.

  • 64 vs 32 bit kernal operation

How do I know if my Mac is operation in 64 or 32 bit mode? I cannot see anything in the About this Mac area under the Apple menu that tells me this.
    Thank you

If you have a Core2Duo or later Intel Mac it is a 64-bit system. Only a handful of models will boot a 64-bit kernel. All boot into the 32-bit kernel by default. But they will run 64-bit software, and Snow Leopard's components are all 64-bit except for a few drivers that are 32-bit. If you open Activity Monitor you will see whether a process is 64-bit or 32-bit by looking under the column heading of "Kind."

  • 64 bit mode and some questions

    Happy New Year all,
Just once I'd like to start up in 64 bit mode. I've tried to do it several times without success and I don't know what the problem is. Hardware, software?
I'm running two 10.6.2 systems, one on 1 SSD 3 drive Raid 0 array, one on another. Both internal and I used SoftRaid to set both up.
Each time I try, I get the gray screen with Apple logo and the spinning wheel. After a time I get the circle with a bar through it and have to use the power button to shut down. When I tried it last time on one array, the above happened and both arrays unmounted. I could only get my disks mounted by booting from a clone and both systems, the 32 and 64 bit, did not show in the Startup Disk Pref Pane. Both systems showed up when I pressed the Option key at start up but I couldn't start up from either.
I should have remembered to press the 3 and 2 keys to get access to those drives again but a PRAM reset got my 32 bit system back again. From there with a little research I saw mention of the 3 and 2 keys again, tried it on the 64 bit system and got it to boot in 32 bit.
Long story short though I don't know why I can't at least boot into 64 bit mode. Could it have something to do with the SSDs? Could it have something to do with SoftRaid? Why would both arrays dismount when only one should be affected?
Is it a common issue for many 64 bit compatible Macs to not be able to start up in 64 bit mode for any one of a variety of reasons? I should say that neither of my systems can start up that way.
    Thanks, any insight is appreciated.

    Talk to Mark and look for any notes on SoftRAID and 64-bit mode;
Try installing Mac OS only to one of your SSDs (break the array).
Just a nice small clean Apple ONLY OS.
"6" + "4" ought to get you into 64-bit kernal mode.
Any PCIe card/driver you have to be concerned with?
    ==================
SoftRAID 3.6.8 is compatible with Snow Leopard in 32 bit mode. You will be asked to replace the newer version of the SoftRAID driver that is bundled with Snow Leopard, with the 3.6.8 driver.
+A newer, *64 bit version of the SoftRAID driver* is included with Snow Leopard for users in 64 bit mode,+ which will allow you to keep existing volumes and access data from the 64 bit version of Snow Leopard. Currently, only the X-Serve boots into 64 bit mode by default. *SoftRAID 3.6.8 will not work in 64 bit mode.*
    SoftRAID 4.0 is coming soon!
SoftRAID version 4 will be a full 64 bit Snow Leopard compatible version. We don't have a firm shipping date, but will try to have a "customer beta" in a few weeks for those who want to beta test SoftRAID 4.0.
The SoftRAID 4.0 official release will probably be in October. Upgrades will cost $69, except for 2009 purchasers, who will get it free.

  • RME Fireface 800 in 64 bit Problem

Using information helpfully provided by Kappy and The Hatter on this forum (see topic https://discussions.apple.com/message/27751034?ac_cid=op123456 if interested) I found that I was able to get my Mac Pro (early 2008) 3,1 to boot in 64 bit mode, and that Logic Pro 9 could also be made to open and work in 64 bit mode.
I am currently using OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, but am waiting for 10.8 Mountain Lion to be “delivered” (by email) so that I can use Arturia’s  V Collection 4 and their Keylab 61 USB MIDI keyboard controller, both of which require Mountain Lion. V Collection 4 is 64 bit only, which is why I want to use 64 bit.
It all seems to work except my RME Fireface 800 interface, which is not recognised in 64 bit - red light on the FF800 unit and the associated software will not open. The FF800 works fine when I go back to 32 bit on the Mac Pro.
Does anyone here know about the issue with 64 bit and the RME Fireface 800 please? Maybe it just needs updated drivers? I have emailed RME and await their reply but it made sense to ask here as well.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Steve
[By the way, I have checked, from very helpful people on this forum, that Mountain Lion is compatible with my Mac Pro, and that the Mac Pro does have 64 bit kernal]

Just needed to download up-to-date driver and flash firmware. Solved with the help of RME support. :-)

I cannot get my Mac Pro (Original) MacPro1,1 to boot with the 64 Bit kernel in 10.6.8 (this is a 2 x 3Dual-Core Intel Xeon machine).
    Firmware = MP11.005C.B08 (EFI 1.2) 1.7f10 (SMC 1.1)
Will it not  run the 64 bit kernel?
Is there a firmware upgrade to allow this?
    Should I bother?
It won't boot with the Key 6 & 4 method.
    or using Terminal command;
    sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance...

Because it can't and doesn't have a 64-bit supported firmware.
UEFI (EFI64) was not finalized and adopted until very late 2007 and introduced in 2008, by Apple, Intel, other members of EFI Group and Unified EFI.  The Mac Pro Mid-2010 was  the first time though that 64-bit mode was the default.
Does it matter? not really. you can't install 48GB RAM anyway, while there are some improvements from 64-bit kernal.
Also can't boot Windows 7 64-bit DVD to install properly. But you can run Windows 64-bit kernel because you have a 64-bit Xeon.

  • Differentiate 32 bit and 64 bit

    Hi Guyz,
How do we know the SAP we are using is 32 bit or 64 bit?
I am not able to find out this information from the Status.I am planning for a Kernal upgrade for ECC6 and confused which(32 bit or 64 bit) Kernal to use.
    Warm Regards,
    Syam

    Dear Syam,
Please do refer to the note given by Manu . It is actually very old and not updated, but has generic command like once you navigate to exe\run (or a similar path to mine) of your server using command line/ command prompt, you can use disp+work.exe -version etc. In fact I will quote the whole section from it - Point - 12 - please note some of them might be outdated.
    12. How can you find out whether an object is installed in its  32-bit or 64-bit version?
    a) R/3 executables (R3trans, Kernel, tp, R3load):
                           cd /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run
    disp+work -version
    R3trans -version
    etc.
If no bit-version is mentioned within the text, this means it is a 32-bit version. 64-bit version would return something like       .... COMPILED WITH 64-BIT LIBRARIES....
    b) Oracle
                           as ora<SID> user start svrmgrl
In the header it shows oracle-version and bit-number.
    you can also do a SELECT * FROM V$VERSION;
                           Oracle client-lib
library oracle is using CD $ORACLE_HOME/LIB
FILE LIBCLNTSH.<EXT>libary the R3-tools are using
Please check note 180430 for your R3 release specific oracle client note. The location of the clientshared library has changed  with different R3 releases. Get the location of the library from  that note and then execute:
cd <directory where the clientlib is in>
    FILE libclntsh<version>.<extension>
Most kernels also have the function calls to the oracle libraries extracted to a new library dboraslib.<extension> Please also check this library:
    cd /usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/exe/run
    FILE dboraslib.<extension>
    c) OS
    HP:
getconf KERNEL_BITS  executed as root user returns either 32 or 64
    DEC-UNIX:
automatically 64-bit - also shows with the command /usr/sbin/sizer -v
    AIX:
beginning with release 4.3.1 64-bit; please make sure that all hardware components are 64-bit. When installing 4.3.1 AIX automatically detects whether your hardware is 64-bit and will install the necessary 64-bit software components. The easiest way to find out whether AIX is 64-bit is by the following commands:
lslpp -l bos.64bit - this should return a line that bos.64bit is installed
genkex | grep 64    - this checks whether the 64-bit kernel extension is installed. it should return something like
    149bf58 a3ec /usr/lib/drivers/syscalls64.ext.

MohamedWhat is your linux and oracle version? To installing ASM you have to take correct version asmlib packages for your OS and kernel version. You have to install following packages.
    oracleasm-support-version.arch.rpm
    oracleasm-kernel-version.arch.rpm
oracleasmlib-version.arch.rpmRefer below link and download above correct rpms according your kernel version and install these.

  • Maximum possible memory address space using OS 10.6.2 and iMac 8,1. . .

    Hello,
My understanding of the 4 GB spec. of maximum supported RAM for my iMac 8,1 is that it is a legacy of 32 bit architecture, where the address space is 2^32 unique addresses. But that is for a 32 bit system. . .
Obviously my (and most other) mac is configured with 64 bit architecture, add Snow Leopard (using 64 bit kernal) to the mix, and I expect the address space to follow suite, and support 2^64 unique address (~16 terabytes of RAM).
So it seems that the 4 GB spec. is obsolete.
Can anyone provide for me a clear technical explanation of this? (Or point me to such a resource.) I'm not really interested in anecdotal information of the "I plugged it in and the System Profiler said X" variety. I've searched this forum and Google for an answer to this question to no avail.
    Thanks,
    -SkepticalRobot

You seem to understand correctly. What is it you want to know?
When your computer is booted into the 32-bit kernel the memory space accessible is restricted to the 32-bit limit of 4 GBs. Thus, running a 64-bit capable application still limits the application to the 4 GBs unless the application is written to allow it to address more than that. I don't know if any such application exists for OS X. If you boot the 64-bit kernel (requires that your model will boot the kernel) then the address space is limited by the 64-bit maximum of 16 TBs.
In order to take advantage of the increased memory space you must use only 64-bit capable applications that can address that much memory. You also would need to be able to install that much RAM in the computer. Your model supports a maximum of 6 GBs.
It's questionable whether booting the 64-bit kernel makes much sense given that you cannot install enough RAM to much exceed what is usable with the 32-bit kernel which is a maximum of 8 GBs (4 GBs per channel, and the hardware is dual-channel.) Furthermore, there are no larger memory modules for laptops than 4 GBs, and they are very expensive. And, there's a limited number of third-party applications and utilities that are 64-bit capable. This is especially a problem for system extension modules which may not be 64-bit capable and will not work with the 64-bit kernel.

Ok. I have found that I can get this version of Java to work if I uncheck the box "Keep temporary files to ensure fast access" under Network in the Java Preferences. I don't really understand why but it works so I don't really care.

  • Macbook running 10.6.8 not recognizing my midi usb keyboard! Need Help!

Hi im using a macbook running 10.6.8. I have literally spent about 12 hrs trying to fix this problem, I have with my mac recognizing my midi usb akai mpk mini keyboard. I have not heard about this problem on any other websites but basically my mac dosnt recognize it 7out of 8 times, and when it does I have roughly 5 to 15 minutes before all of a sudden my computer completely forgot it. I have tryed restarting it, finding drivers on akai's website, and messing with my 32 bit and 64 bit kernal settings. It came with this janky *** software that is very poorly explained in the manuel. But I have to admit the first 3 days I had it everytime I plugged it in my computer knew what it was, but as soon as I unplugged it for my trip to florida and plugged it in 8 hrs later, it started pooping out on me. I really need help I dont know if it is my midi settings, my hardware, the keyboard, or the janky software it came with. But if anyone can help me please help me out.

Really hope you figured this out as it's been 4 months. For the rest of you with similar problems I purchased the same device today and experienced the exact same problems. In the end I tried a new USB cable and everything was fine.

  • Can't mount my NTFS ****

Knowing the fact that my new macbookpro can't write on NTFS hdd, I went to install NTFS Paragon 6.5 so that i can write on NTFS. (This version worked for a friend of mine)
But who knows after installing it, i realised my NTFS hdd now can't even be mounted. I then tried to uninstall this NTFS 6.5 but it says it is not installed, when the NTFS Paragon is still in System Preferences. I tried to uninstall/reinstall/delete/restart Paragon NTFS 8.0 and see if it fixes, and I found out that it still fail to mount my <edited by host> NTFS hdd (both my external NTFS hdd and bootcamped NTFS windows 7 hdd).
I used disk utility to fix but it just won't mount. It said "updating boot support partitions for the volume as required" when i repair it. I even format my drive with zero out data and reinstall my Mac OS X 10.6.7.
After all these steps, i still can't mount my NTFS hdd. Please help me as I am getting frustrated.

    Uninstall Paragon if you can
Do a Apple Menu > About this Mac > more Information  and scroll down where it says "Software" and click on it.
On the right will say "System Software Overview"
Look down to "64 bit Kernal and Extensions" It will say "Yes" or "No"
I think someone said Paragon only works with 32 kernal in Snow Leopard.
Reboot into 32 bit mode by holding 3 2 keys, this should make Paragon work until you get your files off, but you should uninstall it, it's not needed anymore.
(do get your machine back into 64 bit mode, boot holding the 6 4 keys)
Here is a free utility that enables NTFS read/write support in Snow Leopard.
It's a hack so know it might not work in Lion, but get you by for now.
    http://ntfsmounter.com/
If all that fails, burn a ISO of PartedMagic to cd using Disk Utility. Windows 7 right click, or the free ImgBurn for Windows.
Hook up a HFS+ or exFAT formatted external powered drive to transfer files too.
Hold c/option and boot from the disk, install into RAM and the disk will spit out.
On the left is MountDevcies, doubleclick it twice to get two file transfer windows.
    http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=screenshots
Use the third smaller window to mount your drives, use the file transfer windows to transfer data from the NTFS drive to the exFAT/HFS+ drive.
Once completed unmount the drive and use the lower left corner to exit and reboot. Linux reads and writes anything just about
From now on, format all your external drives to be used with PC's and Mac's as exFAT in Disk Utility (important!)
If you have a Windows XP machine, Microsoft has a free exFAT format to download. Vista and 7 should be fine.
Only Mac's with 10.6.5 and later can read/write exFAT, but exFAT allows larger than 4GB sized files and it the future cross platform disk format.
Don't need Paragon or other third party software anymore, likely why they didn't make a 64 bit kernal extension.
