64-bit Windows 7 on late 2009 iMacs only?

In the Boot Camp Install-Setup documentation I read:
You can use a version of Windows Vista or Windows 7
with any of these Mac computers:
- A Mac Pro or MacBook Pro introduced in early 2008 or later
- An iMac or MacBook introduced in late 2009 or later
Is this true?
Is it really not possible to use 64-bit Windows 7 on a late 2008 iMac?
(Why...?)
Thanks.

Generic, yes, but didn't take into account EFI64 (UEFI 2.x) req'd to native boot a 64-bit DVD of Vista SP1 or later. Apple has a list of those that are supported (actually, a list of UN-supported).

  • Boot Camp for Windows 7 64 bit on 21.5" late 2009 iMac

I've read much about installing Windows 7 64 bit on my 21.5" late 2009 iMacs -
    - nevertheless there is some lack of clarity about how to do it right.
    First I read "http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup10.6.pdf".
That's all well and good, but nowhere in this document is that "USB storage device trick"
(see "http://support.apple.com/kb/DL995") mentioned! On the other hand, in that DL995
description there's nowhere mentioned that there are additional steps to do afterwards!
OK - first I prepared my USB storage device according to DL995, made a 201GB partition,
inserted the 64 bit Windows 7 DVD and ran the installation without any problems.
Windows works, but brightness and volume controls for example don't work.
(When I press F1 I get Windows help etc.)
I can't find Boot Camp installed under Windows anywhere!
After the same installation on my second 21.5" iMac everything looks identical
with the exception that under "Bluetooth Devices" on one machine there's
"Apple Wireless Keyboard" and "Apple Wireless Mouse" installed - on the other
machine NOT, even tough I've NEVER used Bluetooth devices any of both
machines (just used wired Apple keyboard and USB Trackball).
How can this be? What's wrong?
Before I continue (OS X disc, 3.1 update... if required at all?),
how can I verify that the USB storage device had been used at all?/
How would it look if it wouldn't have been used?
    Thanks for your help!

    Thanks for your reply.
You inserted and ran Apple setup off your OS X DVD once W7 was updated and running?
That adds a bunch of devices and services, OSSwitcher, TimeServices, the Boot Camp
control panel, and would show Boot Camp version 3.0 in Programs control panel.
Yes, I know, but I haven't installed it yet. First I want to make sure that the first
step of the installation (DL995) worked well. on both Macs. Do you know how this
could be verified? What should have been installed from the USB device?
It puzzles me that on my 2nd iMac under "Bluetooth Devices"
"Apple Wireless Keyboard" and "Apple Wireless Mouse"haven't been installed.
Maybe this is a clue, that on that iMac the USB device had been ignored
during windows installation? Or could that have another reason?
This is my problem at the moment.

  • Late 2009 iMac Windows installer won't run

So I will explain with more detail. My iMac is the late 2009 21.5 inch iMac with a..
    Intel core 2 duo processor
    4GB of
    500GB HDD
So I followed the bootcamp guide which was made by apple.  I opened up the bootcamp assistant and downloaded all of the software needed, and started partitioning the disk. I made about 40GB of space for my Windows side. After the partition completed, my mac restarted and started to read the DVD. However, I only get a black screen, and I can't get the Windows 7 installer to run. I thought I have some problems with my install disk so I used virtual box to see if the dvd works. When I used it on virtual box, the installer started and everything went fine. But when I use this for bootcamp, it did not work. I tried resetting everything, using a different installation disk, redo the partitioning, or boot up the disk by pressing the option key at the startup and selecting the disc. But none of them worked. I don't know why this is not working, since windows installed without any problems on my macbook pro retina. If someone was in the same situation or knows a solution for this, please help me. Again it is the Late 2009 iMac 21.5 inch model.

  • I have a late 2009 iMac, with a Nvidia 9400 Graphics card.  I was wondering what my options are for upgrading.  I use Windows 7 via Bootcamp, so I need a card that is compatible.

I have a late 2009 iMac, with the default Nvidia 9400 Graphics card.
I was wondering what my options are for upgrading.  I use Windows 7 via Bootcamp, so I need a card that is compatible/has available drivers.
This is for gaming. On the lowest settings of "Call of Duty 4", I get about 100 FPS... Was hoping to be able to play on higher resolution w/o the fps lag.
I'm not good with the hardware part of computers at all, but know how to get around the OS.

In most cases the graphics cards in iMacs are Not upgradeable.  They are usually soldered to the logic board.  RAM is considered, along with harddrives, the only component that is upgradeable in an iMac, unlike in PC's.  So basically you would need to sell your unit and purchase an iMac with a more powerful graphics card.
    Hope this helps

  • IMac late 2009 reads only 2GB RAM,I have re-installed the card 10 times now,what else could I do?

iMac late 2009 reads only 2GB RAM,I have re-installed the card 10 times now, what else could I do?

Please give us some more details on what exactly has gone wrong with your iMac.
What size RAM module/s are you trying to install and where did you purchase the RAM module/s from?
RAM has to be installed in matched size pairs.
Make sure the RAM module clicks into place. You need to apply a little bit of force to get the module to slide in and clIck into its module slot location.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
If you purchased RAM from ANY other source and still can't get the RAM to work, return it for a full refund and buy RAM from the sources I have listed.

Need help with Late 2009 imac- had HD and video card replaced under Apple Care last year. Upgraded to Mavericks and it froze up while on Yahoo looking at a slide show. Screen pixelated with checkerboard patterns and then eventually locks-up. Only way to get it to work now is in SAFE MODE.
Tried memory test, Resetting SMC, AHT, Zapping NVRAM, PRAM, only errors I can see are some permissions

New kernel panic is now as follows-
What's interesting is I had the video card replaced at Apple in the last year- it's a ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
But I see that the log has it listed as
    "com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000(8.2.4)"
wondering if that my be the problem as the issue is the screen is fragmented and flickers- checkerboard before it crashes when not in safe mode..

  • Installing Windows 7 on a late 2009 iMac running Mavericks

I'm running a perfectly good late-2009 iMac running Mavericks and had a bootcamp partition that worked until I needed to replace my hard drive.
Now I want to install Windows 7 (via bootcamp) for gaming.  Bootcamp 5 won't download the software or allow a USB/ISO Windows 7 load due to my model/ROM version, which is:
    Model Name:               iMac
    Model Identifier:          iMac10,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed:          3.33 GHz
    Number of Processors:          1
    Total Number of Cores:         2
    L2 Cache:                      6 MB
    Memory:                       8 GB
    Bus Speed:                    1.33 GHz
    Boot ROM Version:        IM101.00CC.B00
I've read quite a few threads about the apple software download server issues, creating an ISO, adjusting the BootCamp package, using virtualbox, etc. to bypass this.  But can't find anything addressing my specific situation where I'm running mavericks AND have an older ROM version that won't allow USB install for some stupid reason.
I've made an ISO boot disk (and USB), tried adjusting my BootCamp package strings, and have virtualbox, winclone, Daemon tools, etc. but can't get to the point where I can upload the bootcamp software and Win7.  Has anyone solved this problem?

No one has done this before?

  • Installing windows xp on my late 2009 iMac

how do i install windows xp on my late 2009 imac?

I just requested that the Host move your thread over to the Boot Camp forum.
Hopefully after they do that maybe someone over there might see it and help you. Your question has gone far beyound my knowledge of Boot Camp.

  • I already installed 64 bit WIndows 7 on my iMac 8,1. is this "right?"

i installed W7 on my imac from 08. and, i read this from the website:
These Macs can use 64-bit editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7:
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2008) and later
MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2008) and later
Mac Pro (Early 2008) and later
    iMac (21.5 inch, Late 2009)
    iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
iMac (27-inch, Quad Core, Late 2009)
    MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009)

  • My hard drive is slower than ever - Late 2009 iMac - help requested

I was testing my hard disk via BlackMagic Disk Speed Test across the network (for copying files from my MacBook Pro to my Late 2009 iMac, and I was shocked at the write speeds.
Because of this, I went to the machine and ran local tests, both BlackMagic and xbench. Suddenly I was horrified when I saw the performance for write operations well below the speeds I'd observed in the past. Luckily, I had saved xbench files so I had the ability to compare old disk tests. In the summer of 2013 running 10.7.3, this same hard drive had an uncached write speed of 116 MB/s [4K blocks] and 94 MB/s [256K block]. Now, the drive running under 10.9.5 is performing very inconsistently, with top speeds around 80 MB/s and averages more like 50 MB/s.
I cannot think of any significant changes to tools or background applications installed since that time, so I ran EtreCheck -- the results of which I'm pasting below.
Any guidance as to what I should test would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading! --
    Chris
    Problem description:
Hard disk slowed to less than half the speed from Mac OS X 10.7.3, as I am now on 10.9.5 and the speed appears to be roughly 40M/s uncached write down from 119M/s previously. I am using the same drive, memory and most of the same applications.
The only large difference is the OS.

    Hi Eric -
I did a horrible job of explaining *when* the slow performance became noticeable. These changes did not happen when I installed Mavericks, I just don't have benchmarks *saved* to give the support community exact numbers after Mavericks was installed. The performance at that time was roughly the same, although you might recall that the old app xbench no longer worked to give a comparison because one or more of the sections of testing wouldn't work (memory, if I recall correctly, although I will run it when I am back at that machine and post here).
In any case, the only significant change since the slow down is the OS, but the decline in performance was noticed in the fall. It wasn't until I tried this network copying task the other day that I decided to run BlackMagic's test. This is when I realized I should go check the performance on the local machine. Having already run through many of the generic recommendations, I thought perhaps someone here who has a much deeper understanding of the storage abstraction layer would have guidance on specific preference files that might be corrupted since I can't find any tool to check them. I've noticed that many of the people seeking guidance are not very technical and the advice is similarly geared. I'm sure I could spend a little time this week finding comparable tools in Mac OS X to those I'd have used in the past on Windows (Sysinternals) to do real time debugging and process analysis.
So far I have found that there were a few processes running high, like the dashboard client, so I moved (deleted) the preference file and rebooted. This resulted in the gain to that 60 MB/sec write performance (up from the low of 40 MB/sec), but there must be other areas yet unexplored.
At this point I'm considering a fresh install, but I'd been told in previous exchanges when I first started developing on Macs (2008) that fresh installs were rarely the best solution on Macs.
Can you give me guidance on that? You probably know that in the Windows world it is often (depending on how you define often) necessary to format and reinstall the OS. As a long time systems architect developing everything from device drivers to enterprise solutions, I see that as a result of the attempts to maintain legacy support for so long and the convoluted resulting APIs and failure to make real fixes for fear of causing problems with older hardware and software. Would you suggest erasing and reinstalling?
@BobHarris - I know that's a problem and it's why I monitor the drive more than I do drives in other systems. My drive didn't qualify for replacement, but I think Apple doesn't always do a good job with the recalls. I was very fortunate that my old white MacBook qualified for quite a few replacement parts so it's a great browsing-the-web computer now, but at its age, it isn't capable of running most of the apps I need. I have considered selling the 27" iMac but when I last had it in for warranty repair, the DisplayPort was misaligned to the case, so I'm going to have to pay labor just to get it popped open to fix that (since the service center says they didn't cause the DP problem - although they must have!)... In any case, if I have to spend that money, I might as well use the drive doubler kit since I never use the optical drive in that box anyway. Mostly I love having it because of the gorgeous big screen. That being said, costs of repairs are silly when I can just buy another used MBP circa 2012 and get twice the processing power then use a CalDigit dock like the one I use with my existing MBP to use an inexpensive HD TV for the monitor.
Thanks for the replies folks - the input is awesome!
    Chris

  • Late 2009 iMac running sporadically slow

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help
I have a late 2009 iMac with 4gb of Ram which is running intermittently slow and hanging. It has periods when it works fine and then others where the icons bounce for ages before opening and the little spinning circles arrive when even doing the most basic of activities. I don't have hundreds of things open at once.
Its hardwired to the network so even if streaming iCloud music it shouldn't really cause the system to hang.
Its upgraded to Yosemite, but these issues were pre-exisiting and its been slow for a while.
Use dropbox and appreciate big syncs will have an issue, but at the moment that is all up to date.

  • Is anyone using SMC fan control on their late 2009 iMacs?

I am very concerned about the heat from my iMac.
    I have a late 2009 27 inch model.
I noticed a lot of posts of GPU and HD failures.
I bought this iMac used through a certified Apple reseller and I can't afford any problems with this for awhile.
Computer components do not Ike heat.
And despite everything I have been reading in this forum aluminum can retain heat. Not simply vent all of it away from the back casing.
Excessive heat is what shortens the life span of any components In a computer.
Heat in a computer is the enemy!
I do not care what I am getting for temp readings from my iMac.
It's very, very warm and I don't like it and feel it will cause issues in the near future.
I just bought this iMac three months ago and, at least for awhile due to personal health issues, I can't afford to repair a potential failure that might occur in the near future.
I posted a similar thread not long ago but only got one response I was not happy or confident with.
I want to know if anyone is running SMC Fan Controls on late 2009 iMac models and if it has helped and whether anyone had issues with it.
I want my iMac to run cooler than it does now.
I am in a living situation where I have limited means to cool the place I live. The room I am using has no air conditioning only a large ceiling fan and I am running a floor fan. I have a small fan blowing air behind the iMac's case to help with cooling it, also.
Room temps can get into the high 80's.
Also, if you are running SMC Fan Control on a 2009 iMac, could you give an idea what RPM setting you are using for the various fans.
I am a freelance graphic designer, Illustrator, and audio/video guy.  Plus I have doing 3D CGI model work for the last few years. I run Photoshop. Final Cut and Blender quite often.
Any real help with this issue would be greatly appreciated!
    ThanX.

Even if I had one, I wouldn't run SMC Fan Control.  Apple has not released the limits of temperature for any of its Mac model interiors.  As such any temperature management is purely guesswork.  If you are having serious trouble maintaining an enivoronment suitable for computers, you probably should consider at minimum a window air conditioner unit.  http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html are very particular about the outside environment.  If that is not able to be maintained, you seriously need to consider a different working environment.

  • Bootcamp Issue – Late 2009 iMac running Yosemite

    Hi there,
I'm having some issues installing Windows 7 on my late 2009 iMac running 10.10.1 and I'm hoping someone can help. I'm using the latest version of Bootcamp (5.1.2)
I keep getting a black screen during the final step of installing Windows 7. I did some research and discovered that this is a common issue. Apple even created a support page for it. Much to my disappointment, downloading the prescribed drivers did not solve the problem. I followed the instructions word for word and even tried a few times. I erased the partition and started fresh each time.
All of the forum threads about this issue I've read are pretty out-dated and I can't find anyone with the same issue on Yosemite.
Has anyone else come across this issue or have any suggestions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Jackson

Can you also post the output of sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C ? This will dump the partition header which can confirm the format of Windows partition.
    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

Windows does show up in System Prefs, however it's a folder that says 'Untitled Windows'. After restarting, the Windows logo comes up for a bit, but then just everything just goes to black.

  • 'Late 2009' iMac running hotter than usual (Power-related)

For the past month or so, my 27" iMac (2.66 GHz i5) has been running hotter than usual (heat management has been terrible on these things for years). Using iStat Menus, I've tracked the culprit down to the power system, with the board and primary/secondary heat sinks regularly approaching 90º C (the secondary heat sink has actually hit 90º). The fans are ramping up as I would expect, but I'm a bit concerned over the frequency with which this happens. It seems like programs that, in the past, would not have taxed the CPU as much are suddenly ramping up to 100% usage, which obviously heats up the power supply. The only thing I can think of that's different is Mavericks (10.9.4). I know it has a few new bells and whistles that are supposed to use the CPU more efficiently and pull less power in the long run, but it seems like the exact opposite is happening.
Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions (short of rolling back to Snow Leopard, which I might do)? Is this a sign that the Mac is on its way out?

If the machine suddenly shuts down on its own or kernel panics, I'd be concerned.  Do not attempt to modify anything internally except ensuring the RAM is to stated to be Late 2009 iMac compatible.  Not all 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SO-DIMMs (204-pin) RAM are alike.  http://www.crucial.com/ http://www.macsales.com/ and http://www.datamem.com/ all sell RAM by age of computer and model name.  Do not get ValueRAM.  Only get lifetime warranty RAM.
