64 Bit Windows 7 only sees 4gb of ram out of my 8gb (2.73 usable)???

Alright so I got the 64 bit windows 7 since i thought it would be able to read all 8gb of ram.....I assume some will be used to run the OS but should still be 6.7gb. I updated bootcamp to 3.1. Any ideas?

It could be Apple EFI firmware... and this looks to confirm 8GB is possible
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/AppleMacBook_MacBookPro/Upgrade
Plus you used Home Premium 64-bit, and not the 32-bit (I once picked up the wrong DVD). Not Home Starter pack or something.
Boot Camp is just drivers, nothing that would change BIOS in any way.
Windows should 'see' 8GB, even if limited in what it can use.
Might want to check on where you bought the upgrade kit of RAM, too.

  • [SOLVED] Thinkpad t420 only sees 4GB of RAM instead of 8GB

    Hello,
I've just installed another 4GB of RAM into my Thinkpad t420. I now have 8GB of RAM. Windows sees 8GB and so does my BIOS.
However, GRUB only sees 3GB on the boot menu (as far I understand 1GB is shared with the Graphics Card). Arch also sees only 3GB.
Some forums said I have to make some modifications in BIOS for the memory, however I don't think my BIOS has that option and beside, the BIOS sees 8GB.

  • Is there any benefit to 64-bit version when I only have 4GB of RAM?

My laptop only has 4GB of RAM so I am wondering if there is any benefit to installing 64-bit version? Besides I have an AMD Athlon II P340 Dual-Core 64-bit processor which isn't very powerful so I am not even in the best spot to take advantage of 64-bit. For those wondering, I am using Windows 7 64-bit.
Although I am posting this in Photoshop, I am in fact installing most of the Adobe CS6 Master Collection so there is a chunk of space to be saved. Also I don't tend to use plugins, only OnOne which are 64-bit. So should I avoid installing the 64-bit version altogether? or should I install 64-bit and get rid of 32-bit? What is your opinion?

That's entirely up to you - if you're SURE you'll not need any 32 bit plug-ins then you're probably going to be okay.  The 64 bit version does everything.
I personally DO have some 32 bit only plug-ins and I occasionally do use the 32 bit Photoshop for that reason, so I have them both installed.
The only other consideration I can think of is that occsasionally a system might have a problem (with drivers or something) to where the 32 or 64 bit version will work better than the other.  Probably your best bet, assuming you're trying to minimize disk usage, will be to install just the 64 bit version and see how well it meets your needs.  You can always go back, uninstall, and install both (or the other).
A "thinking out of the box" alternative...  Maybe you could consider getting a big new SSD drive to replace the drive you have, which will both kick performance up and give you a lot of extra space.  Of course, this costs $$$.

  • P55 GD 80 - only sees 4GB of 8GB RAM - G.Skill F3-16000CL9D-4GBTD

I have just built a system with  aP55 GD 80 - and it only sees 4GB of the installed 8GB RAM.  I have not yet installed an OS, I am just POSTing and going into BIOS, and BIOS says there are 4GB physical memory.
This is G.Skill F3-16000CL9D-4GBTD memory, (4 sticks of 2GB each).
I upgraded the BIOS to 1.5 and it made no difference.
Also, interestingly, if I only run 2 sticks, it sees 2GB instead of 4GB (regardless of which 2 sticks) -- so it's as if it thinks each stick is just 1 GB.
Can anybody give me pointers of what I might be able to do about this?
I've read that some people are trying newer beta BIOS versions (newer than 1.5) to resolve memory problems - where can I download those?
    thanks a bunch!

    Dont buy the wrong RAM 2 x (2x2GB) for 8GB use !
    Charges can be different.
Thats the right way. Buy 8GB kits only guys!!!(for every P55 system)->
    example:
    http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a486589.html
    http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a486985.html
    http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a454453.html
    http://geizhals.at/deutschland/a453903.html
    Bios shows 4GB(2) instead 8(4)GB:
Test every module with memtest 4.0 on errors http://www.memtest.org/  2hours !!!
Put CPU out, control your socket pins, mount cooler and look if 8GB function is proper, control RAM socket.
Flash newest Beta .173  with only 1 or 2 RAM sticks http://msi-forum.de/index.php?page=Thread&postID=727333#post727333 (you must register in forum,or ask a mod here in the HQ forum for Beta
.173) , now put all 4 modules in the RAM bank, cmosclear.

  • 32 bit windows 7 and Two- 4GB sticks of RAM and dual channels

    Hello,
I have a Desktop running Win 7 32 bit. At the moment I have 1 4GB stick of RAM in. I have another 4 GB stick of ram(Same brand as the first one) . I know win 7 32 can't go over 4GB of RAM but was wondering if I put both sticks in will I get better performance
because it will be using dual channels or will it just MAX using the first stick and never see the 2nd becasue it is already using the full 4GB off the fist stick.

Thanks for your reply. I understand in reality I have really about 3.25 gigs. But if I had both sticks in would it be using all that 3.25 on one stick or would it split the 3.25 between the two sticks.
If you have 2 sticks of 2gig in run on dual channels I am told performance is better then just having 1 stick of 4 gig. I am just wondering if if I used the 2 4gig sticks which will only give me 3.25 gig will it use the dual Channel which would help performance.

  • X201 comes with 32 bit Windows edition only ?

    Hello,
I found that the only X201 configuration available over here (NUS8UMC) comes with 4 GB RAM but 32 bit Windows 7 Edition only:
    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/czind/LenovoPortal/cs_CZ/catalog.workflow:item.detai...
Sorry, such deal does not make sense. I'd like to have Windows 7 Professional 64 bit US English edition. Some other vendors usually offers four options upon the first boot:
    32 bit edition (localized)
    64 bit edition (localized)
    32 bit edition (US English)
    64 bit edition (US English)
Please note I need real pure US English edition, not a MUI version because the names of system accounts and folders still remains localized using the MUI edition.

You can either buy the 64 bit media from Lenovo, or download a legal copy from the web.

  • ESXi6.0 Host, WIndows 7, only boots with 1GB RAM

    Hi gang,
I converted a physical Win7 machine for use on my ESXi 6.0 sever and it created the machine just fine.  I added a second disk to the server and moved the VM files to that disk, removed it from the inventory, and then added it back.  The VM was originally configured to use 4GB RAM.  However, when I power on the machine, the console window stays black and Windows never boots.  With some trial and error, the only way I was able to get the VM to power on and boot was if I changed its settings to only use 1GB RAM.  There is 8GB RAM total in the ESXi host and the other VMs aren't using much, so there is plenty freely available.  However it simply won't boot with more than 1GB configured.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Well I deleted the VM and re-created it, and reloaded Windows and all my software, works fine now.
    Thanks for all the help.

  • Unable to run iTunes  store on 64 bit Windows 7, only loads half way.

    I need help.
    Using a Windoze 7 64 bit, I have downloaded iTunes 10.5.
But when I run it I get to half way on the top bar for the store and no further.
Therefore I cannot access the store.
Norton 360 say it is an iTunes problem and Apple say it is a Norton problem.
Any advice tips or solutions? Preferably the latter.

  • HT4946 windows 7 only sees my i phone as a camera and does no back up anyhing else

i need help backing up my phone

The ITunes Backup process creates a compressed package file you can't actually access, so how do you know its not backing up anything else?
The backup process is transparent, you won't be speciified what it backups up. But it does backup more than your photos.
    Apple wrote:
    What does iTunes back up
iTunes will back up the following information
Camera Roll (photos, screenshots, images saved, and videos taken)
For devices without a camera, Camera Roll is called Saved Photos.
Contacts* and Contact Favorites (regularly sync your contacts to a computer or cloud service, such as iCloud, to back them up)
    Calendar accounts and subscribed calendars
    Calendar events
Safari bookmarks, cookies, history, offline data, and currently open pages
    Autofill for webpages
    Offline web application cache/database
    Notes
Mail accounts (mail messages aren't backed up)
    Microsoft Exchange account configurations
    Call history
Messages (iMessage and carrier SMS or MMS pictures and videos)
Voicemail token (This isn't the voicemail password, but is used for validation when connecting. This is only restored to a phone with the same phone number on the SIM card)
    Voice memos
Network settings (saved Wi-Fi hotspots, VPN settings, network preferences)
Keychain (includes email account passwords, Wi-Fi passwords, and passwords you enter into websites and some applications)
If you encrypt the backup, you can transfer the keychain information to the new device. With an unencrypted backup, you can restore the keychain only to the same iOS device. If you're restoring to a new device with an unencrypted backup, you need to enter these passwords again.
App Store Application data (except the Application itself, its tmp, and Caches folder)
Application settings, preferences, and data, including documents
    In-app purchases
    Game Center account
    Wallpapers
Location service preferences for apps and websites you've allowed to use your location
    Home screen arrangement
    Installed profiles
When you restore a backup to a different device, installed configuration profiles aren't restored (such as accounts, restrictions, or anything that can be specified through an installed profile). Any accounts or settings that aren't associated with an installed profile will be restored.
Map bookmarks, recent searches, and the current location displayed in Maps
Nike + iPod saved workouts and settings
Paired Bluetooth devices (which you can only use if restored to the same phone that did the backup)
    Saved suggestion corrections

  • Why are the latest updates of AME and Premiere Pro CC 2014 only reading 4gb of ram?

I am running Windows 7 64 bit ultimate with 8gb of ram. The previous versions ripped through rendering, but I don't want to go back to revert back as i have been working with the new version now and the old one won't open the projects made by the new one. I also really like the new interface.
In task manager all adobe processes come up with *32.
How do I install the new versions as 64 bit?

Take a look at your GPU usage with something like GPU-Z to see if both Premiere versions are using the same amount of MPE GPU hardware acceleration.  Actually with CC 2014 it might work faster because Adobe added in more 4k effects/features for GPU acceleration.
You might want to download our Premiere Pro BenchMark (PPBM) and run it on both versions.  The H.264 very complex timeline has 4K material in it and usually shows Premiere Pro 8.xxx take about only half the time that Premiere Pro CS6 take to export that same timeline.

    Hi harrrrrsh,
Here is a helpful guide on upgrading to Win 8.1. Your system hardware seems to meet the minimum requirements.
Expand "Can my PC run Windows 8.1?" and navigate to the Win 8 Upgrade Assistant. Select run or save the Win 8 Upgrade Assistant to your desktop. Then run the upgrade assistant from the desktop for a detailed analysis of your PC and the steps needed to complete the upgrade.
Upgrading from XP to Win 8.1 is a big move and you may have device driver problems. You may also have some issues migrating third party legacy software to the Win 8.1 installation.
I have upgraded Win XP PC's to Win 7 with very few issues but have not moved an XP PC to Win 8.1.

Everytime I go to export a photo, I get an error.
"Export Results:  Not enough memory (1)

Even though you have 16gb of ram installed, 32 bit Windows can only use 4gb of it so 12gb is wasted.  This is the reason you are getting not enough memory errors and is a known problem with Lightroom an 32 bit Windows during export.   You need to change to 64 bit Windows.

  • Brightness OSD not working in 64 bit Windows 7

    Hi,
After having used the laptop for a long time with a 32 bit Windows 7, I've upgraded the RAM and added an SSD, and reinstalled with a 64 bit Windows 7. Everything works great, some things even better than before (used to have occasional problems hibernating, but not anymore). However, there is one small, irritating problem:
The brightness OSD is not working, even though the buttons do control the brightness and every other OSD is working properly, only this one isn't.
After installing windows, I've used the ThinkVantage System Update utility to install everything. Then I tried installing all kinds of drivers seperately. So far, no luck.
I'd really appreciate some help resolving this issue.
    Thanks a lot

I've tried several different versions of the On Screen Display from the Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 7, including 6.60.03, 6.60.01, 6.60.03, 6.42.00, 6.24.00. And every time, it's the same thing. Everyhting works but the brightness control OSD.
    What else can I try?

  • 64 bit xp and/or 64 bit windows 7

Currently i have a (June) Mac Pro, Radeon 4870, 8gb Ram, and a 640GB HDD, with Snow Leopard. Well right when I got it I added a second 500GB HDD dedicated for windows XP, well at the time, x64 wasnt supported, so in windows mode, which i mostly use, it only sees 2gb of ram, and doesnt have DirectX10 or anything. I want to know if now i can, and what it would take to upgrade my winXP to 64bit. and I will probably add another 500GB HDD to install 64bit win7 if its possible, any and all input would be nice. Thanks!

    HI
Ensure that your Graphic Card is not sharing the memory with RAM, It could be one reason so get it checked and if yes, the reduce the memory on BIOS for Graphic Card
