64 Bit woes

I recently bought a new laptop with a lot of oomph, Intel Core 3.0 processor, 6 gig ram, etc. I installed CS4 Design Premium and photoshop installed the 64 it version. It's fast and that's great, but I lose all of my favorite plugins, Genuine Fractals, Primatte and more. My question ... can I uninstall 64 bit PS and reinstall 32 bit ... and get my plugins back?
Thanks,
Joe

If you did the default installation, both versions are installed.
You can use the 32-bit plug-ins in the 32-bit version.
And I think you'll find a lot of those plug-ins have caught up since CS4 came out a year ago and have updates.

  • Continual Mac woes (no question, just a rant)

It's Tuesday, and I am having terrible problems with my Mac. But then, why should Tuesday be different from any other day of the week.
Here is a typical day for me. The computer appears to be working OK. I need to watch a DVD for my work. I turn on DVD player, and put one in. The machine can't read the disc. It clicks and whirls, but the icon does not show up on the desktop. Meanwhile, so distressed is the machine that it freaks out. What was up until now was a fluidly operating machine suddenly reverts back to its old ways (i.e., its ways of two days ago). The hold ups and spinning pinwheels begin to eat of hours of my work day. (Remember the old days when computers made life easier?) The machine becomes sticky, gummy. Oh, I can move the curser and it seems to work for a second but then gets stuck in the dock, which explodes in icons and then freezes for five minutes. Yes. Five minutes.
Would love to use Force Quit, but the cursor is spinning, and nothing is responding. Funny about that old Mac. You can't force quit Force Quit. I guess I need to leave it open all the time.
Of course, FQ usually works on Safari. I have never just "quit" Safari. It always requires Force Quit, otherwise I can't turn off my computer. It stalls shut down.
Now I have a DVD trapped in there and can't get it out. [But I just got an answer from another posting.]
In the old macs, there used to be a pin hole you could stick a needle into ... can't find one on my flatpanel iMac.
I bought my Apple flat panel iMac in August of 2002. Yes, I know that that is a long time to have a computer, but I am not rich nor attached to a corporation that can splurge on computers. The first weekend I had the machine, I had three kernal panics.
Among the other problems I have documented are the following: the dock hiding itself unbidden and other features checking and unchecking themselves (Aug 2002); bus errors connected with OS 9 (Sept); some problems that inspired the tech person (Eric)) to talk me through deleting my user i.d., resulting in the loss of two months worth of e-mail (Thursday, 12 September); Preview problems (September); a bizarre box with an unmovable and undeletable red stop sign in it that no tech person or other Mac user I know had ever hear of (Monday 30 September); printing problems; computer won't shut down, numerous disconnection errors, which turned out to be caused by an OS X update (beginning December, 2002, or later); Kernel panics (Feb); computer won't shut down (March); Faxstexx problems, program won't allow me to set it up, finally just deleted the software (April); keys like "V" freeze and repeat endlessly (May 21); DVD Player freezes (May); Safari and Mail begin quitting unexpectedly (May); cursor begins to blink and fade out, plus odd sounds come out of the speakers, a constant error beeping (Sept 9); DVD Player problems (Oct 4).
I called AppleCare while I had it about once a week (the total between August 2002 and the time it ran out was about 155 calls). Naturally, some of these calls are motivated by user error. On the other hand, many of the issues I have called about were unprecedented as far as the Tech person was concerned, such as the blinking mouse, the red stop sign, and the DVD Player woes.
Things improved with Panther, but in Tiger many of the same old issues have returned.
I have been having so many problems with my Mac that I once wrote a letter to the company asking when do I qualify for a new replacement machine. I never received an answer, but I felt better for about a day. Then I turned on my Mac again.

The spinning ball of death as we used to call it is often caused by a lack of RAM, it is hard to be sure as I am not working on your machine, but sometimes things can be improved with additional RAM, it makes it seem like a whole new computer.
A lot of your problems sound like stuff that can be fixed easily enough, and although frustrating things happen here and there with updates. It sounds like you are in fairly good spirits with it all, I would suggest just researching a bit more into maintenance you can do to help maintain the computer and educate yourself a bit more (sounds like you already have learned quite a bit along the way) and you will find a lot of these issues take you a few seconds to rid yourself of. I would start by making sure you are repairing permissions regularly and running the most up to date software. If a lot of problems persist, try creating a second user that is a "test" user to see if the problem is replicated on that user (don't delete your other one, but if you do find the problem not on the other user, you might have a corrupt user, however you don't have to lose all your emails there are plenty of ways to back it up and import it in, or even just bring the entire Mail folder from your library over to the new user). Another thing you can do if you find a lot of system problems is archive and install the OS, it takes a bit of time, but doing it overnight shouldn't be an issue, and you won't lose any of your stuff.

  • Airport express "G" - My woes and some thoughts. . .

I got the airport about this time last year. it worked great and i loved it. In December 2007 I moved to an apartment. I got the local cable co's internet, ran it to my ax and all was well. 6 weeks ago, due to our wonderful economy, i had the cable shut off as I talked to one of my neighbors who has wireless internet running unprotected (no password)..i asked him if i could leech for a bit till i got things sorted. he said cool and all was.....hmmm. SO in my airport menu i select his network and my internet works, sometimes drops then comes right back but no biggie. I reset my ax to just do airtunes and join his network, it restarted and voila, airtunes. problem is that in the last month i get a lot more drop outs and if i go more than 2 days with out streaming by ax disappears and i have to do a hard reset to get it to show up in the utility. The light is green but nothing...sometimes the amber light blinks and it never come on line at all....grrrrrr.
could all my newfound ax woes be due to the fact i am adding it to his network? i had no issues at all when i created my own one with my internet and airtunes.....
    anyone?
EDIT: let me ask this then...when i am streaming music from my mbp to the ax, am i doint it dorectly or am i using his network? If I am sending music from my MBP to the ax via his network then that would basically answer all my questions, if the mbp goes direct then I have no clue....
    edits as i am brainstorming

EDIT: let me ask this then...when i am streaming music from my mbp to the ax, am i doint it dorectly or am i using his network?
It goes from your MacBook Pro to his wireless base station... then from his base station to the AX. So it depends on the performance of his base station and network.

  • Confirmed Bug in Siri - Texting a character not found in 7-bit ASCII Table Causes SMS to Fail

I am 99.9% certain I have singlehandedly discovered and solved a bug in Siri that causes SMS messages to fail (without a failure notice, i.e. red exclamation mark). This problem confounded me for several weeks. (Note: This issue does not affect iMessages.) After four hours of support phone calls to AT&T and Apple, 2 replacement iPhones (set up as new iPhones, and not restoring the backup), a SIM card replacement, a reprovisioning of my entire account with AT&T, and a very upset girlfriend who was understandably skeptical that I was really texting her when I said I was, I had no solution in sight, and my SMS woes persisted. I ended up solving the problem on my own through trial and error.
    THE PROBLEM:
When I dictate an SMS message, if I dictate the word "elipsis" it rightly interprets what I have said as "..."
However, as of today's date, Siri interprets "elipsis" an an extended ASCII version of "...", a version where the elipsis is actually one character and not three separate periods. The one character version of elipsis is not found in 7-bit ASCII.
If you try to text a character that is not 7-bit ASCII, your text message will not be received by the recipient, regardless of the recipient's carrier or phone, and you will not get a failure notice.
If you have any doubt whether Siri has interpreted "elipsis" as one character or as three, try deleting it. If the entire elipsis deletes simply by depressing delete one time, you have generated the single character (non 7-bit) elipsis, a character that cannot be texted, and which will "mysteriously" cause your text to fall into an abyss.
    THE SOLUTION:
It seems that the permanent solution is that the Siri servers or the iOS needs to be reprogrammed only to respond with 7-bt ASCII characters when the user depresses the Siri button to dictate an SMS message.  In the meantime, until Apple solves this probem, the user should refrain from dictating any punctuation that will cause Siri to respond with a non 7-bit ASCII character.
(Apple, I want a gift certificate for solving this problem.)

Too bad Apple will never see this post since this is a user-to-user site.

  • Boot up woes!!!

Hi, I've just built a new PC, previousely with an Asus motherboard which I had to send back. I now have a new MSI 875P NEO-FIS2R which I have just fitted.
My story of woes is as follows:
Fitted the MSI motherboard with a Maxtor SATA hard drive which already has windows XP pro installed from the previous build with the Asus board (which worked fine for a couple of days).
When I started up the system for the first time, the maxtor drive went up in smoke so I turned off the system. Maxtor drive is now dead, but i swapped the power supply just in case. I now have an old 5200 RPM Samsung hard drive attached to the IDE plug on the motheroboard (also with windows XP installed). The board still works thankfully, but will not boot up windows XP. I've tried swapping the boot order (tried all combinations) and tried auto detect in the BIOS. It does detect the Samsung hard drive but I get a bleep, another bleep then a screen saying "sorry for the inconvenience blah blah" and then options saying "boot in Safe mode", "start windows normall" and suchlike. Whenever I select any of them, it just goes back into POST and back to the above screen again.
I have also tried loading the drivers from the floppy disks and the CD but to no avail. I get error saying "non system disk" or "disk error".
I am now at a loss as to what to do! please help!!
    Most thanks for any replies

    Thanks for the replies everybody
Ok, I'm fairly new to this game having only built two PC's before! How do I go about clearing the CMOS?!!! and what is CMOS? sorry if I sound a bit stupid! I will check the connections again (going to re-build from the ground up anyway). I found a burn/scorch on the maxtor drive on one of the chips so its dead! will be getting a new drive next week under warranty.
    Thanks again everyone!

  • How to Install Coldfusion 8 64-bit on Small Business Server 2008 64-bit

How to Install Coldfusion 8 64-bit on Small Business Server 2008 64-bit
I ran Coldfusion 8 on SBS 2003 Premium for 6 months with no problems.  When we finally decided to cut over to SBS 2008, that’s when everything went to hell.  I tried for weeks to get Coldfusion 8 to install properly on the new SBS 2008 64-bit box.  During the course which, I found bits and pieces of information for Vista 64-bit and Windows Server 2008 64-bit installations.  There are some distinct differences, however, with SBS 2008 since it runs core Web applications like OWA, RWW and Companyweb.  After countless unsuccessful attempts, one of which completed corrupted the box, I found the solution.
I have attempted in this white paper to detail the steps to assist others who may be in a similar situation.  I don’t make any warranty for the information, but so long as you follow the steps carefully you should be fine.  BTW, for those of you who say Adobe offers free technical support for licensed users, that’s not entirely true.  Like I said, I purchased CF8 and originally installed it on an SBS 2003 Premium box.  After we cut over to SBS 2008 and encountered problems, Adobe wouldn’t provide any technical support without charging.  Moreover, based on my initial conversations with Adobe’s technical team, no one seemed to know much about running 64-bit on SBS.
From my understanding, only two versions of Coldfusion 8 can be installed in 64-bit: Enterprise and Developer.  The “normal” install (which I paid a grand for) can only be deployed in 32-bit mode – gee, THANKS Adobe!  By the way, in Developer mode only two distinct IPs can access the site in addition to the localhost.  Any additional IPs will result in a CFML error message stating that the maximum number of IPs have been exceeded.  At any rate, take your time and follow the steps to achieve a successful installation.
    PRE-INSTALLATION TASKS
    Back Up SBS
It’s always a good practice to backup your server before deploying any kind of major system changes.  Although this step is optional, I recommend it in case you need to restore your server for any reason.  Bear in mind, if your system ever gets totally corrupted, you cannot restore back from the twice daily incremental backup images alone.  You will need a full backup with system recovery information to restore.  Here are the basic steps:
Click: Start > Programs > Administrative Tools.  Right-click “Windows Server Backup” and choose “Run as administrator”.
Click “Backup Once” under Actions in the right-hand pane.
Choose the “Different Options” radio button under Backup Options.
Choose the “Custom” radio button.  What we’re primarily interested in here is backing up the OS – not your data partitions or attached drives.
Select the “SYSTEM (C)” checkbox, uncheck any others.  Also, ensure that the “Enable system recovery” checkbox is selected before continuing on.
Under ‘Specify Destination Type’, I usually select the “Local drives” radio button and point it to a Terrabyte USB drive I use for backups.  You can point this to a tape drive, or select the “Remote shared folder” radio button if you map to a UNC path to store your backup images.  Just remember, make sure that whatever path you select can readily be accessed in the event of an emergency.  Also, make sure the “Verify after writing (recommended)” checkbox is selected.
Under ‘Specified Advanced Option’, I usually select the “VSS full backup” radio button instead of the default since I don’t use a 3rd party backup product.  If like me you rely solely on SBS for your backups, choose the full backup option.
Confirm everything and click “Backup”.  This process may take several hours depending on the size of your system.
    Verify ISAPI Filters:
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane.
In the center pane under IIS, double click the “Modules” icon to verify that the ISAPI native modules are already installed for IIS.  If it’s set up correctly you should see two entries:
    IsapiFilterModule              %windir%\System32\inetsrv\filter.dll
    IsapiModule                        %windir%\System32\inetsrv\isapi.dll
If either of these modules are missing, you will need to re-install these (google for a solution).
    Set Up Development Environment
Create a directory for your CFML files outside of the default Windows location (e.g., default is usually C:\inetpub\wwwroot\).  For the purpose of our install, I created a directory on a separate disk called: D:\DEV.
Copy and paste your CFML files and directories into the new DEV root Web directory.  This will eventually be the directory where the Coldfusion installer places the CFIDE and CFDOCS folders.
Open IIS Manager and double-click the server instance in the left hand pane.  Expand the “Sites” folder.  Right-click the Sites folder and select “Add Web Site”.
Enter a name in the “Site Name” box (e.g., “test-site”).  You will notice that the system will automatically create a corresponding Application Pool with the same name.  NOTE: this is important to prevent conflicts between the DefaultAppPool (needed for SBS Web apps like OWA, RWW, etc.) and the application pool needed for Coldfusion to function properly in SBS 2008.
Point the “Physical Path” to the directory you created in step #1 above (e.g., “D:\DEV”).
Don’t worry about testing the connection.  If you click “Test Settings” you may receive a warning that IIS cannot verify access to path (D:\DEV).  Don’t worry about this for the time being.
Under “Host name”, enter a DNS path to your site (e.g., “dev.test-site.com”).  Click “OK”.
    Configure Application Pools for Installation
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane.  Click on “Application Pools” to display the list of server application pools in the center pane.
In the “Actions” pane on the right-hand side, click “Set Application Pool Defaults”.
Change “Enable 32-Bit Applications” - the second item from the top – from “False” to “True”, and then click “OK”.  NOTE: if you skip this step, Coldfusion will not properly create the required mappings during the install. We will change this setting back after the installation completes – more on this later.
Modify the application.host.config File for 64-Bitness
Click: Start > Programs > Accessories.  Right-click “Notepad” and choose “Run as administrator”.
Open the config file from within Notepad – default location: C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config
Do a search and change this one line from:
    <add name="PasswordExpiryModule" image="C:\Windows\system32\RpcProxy\RpcProxy.dll" />
    To this:
    <add name="PasswordExpiryModule" image="C:\Windows\system32\RpcProxy\RpcProxy.dll" preCondition="bitness64" />
    Restart the IIS Admin service.
    Set HTTP Compression
According to some threads I read, the http compression module can cause errors if you don’t disable it globally. To remedy this, perform the following:
Click: Start > Programs > Accessories.  Right-click “Command Prompt” and choose “Run as administrator”.
At the command prompt, change directory to intetsrv by typing: cd inetsrv
    Run the following command:
    C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv>appcmd.exe set config -section:system.webServer/httpCompression /-[name='xpress']
This will turn off HTTP compression for all sites in IIS.
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane.  Double-click the “Compression” icon in the IIS section of the center pane.
Uncheck all of the boxes, then click the “Apply” button under Actions in the right-hand pane.
Recheck all of the boxes, then click the “Apply” button under Actions in the right-hand pane.
Restart the IIS Admin service.  This should enable compression and coldfusion to work at the same time.
NOTE: if for some reason you need to reverse this, run the following command from the command prompt:
    C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe set config -section:system.webServer/httpCompression /+[name='xpress',doStaticCompression='false',dll='%windir%\system32\inetsrv\suscomp.dll']
    INSTALLATION TASKS
Download the 64-bit installation package from Adobe – filename: coldfusion-801-wind64.exe.
Right-click the file and select “Run as administrator”.
Accept the terms of the License Agreement.
If you have an Enterprise license, enter it.  For our purposes, just click the “Developer Edition” checkbox.
Select “Server configuration” – the default radio button.
I deselected all subcomponents and can’t guarantee that you’ll arrive at the same results if you select additional items like “.NET Integrated Services”.  It should be fine, particularly if you install documentation.  My preference was to keep the install as plain vanilla as possible.
Select the directory path for Coldfusion to install into – default is :C\Coldfusion
THE NEXT TWO STEPS ARE CRITICAL TO YOUR SUCCESS.  Unselect “All IIS Websites” and select the “Configure specific IIS Website or another web server” radio button.  Click “Add”, and then select your test Web site (e.g., “test-site”) under “IIS Web Site”.  Hit “OK”.
Do NOT use the default directory path for the CF Administrator location (e.g., default path: “C:\inetpub\wwwroot”).  Instead, point the installer to your new DEV root Web directory (e.g., “D:\DEV”).  The bottom line, you want the installer to place the CFIDE directory and files within this folder, alongside your other CFML files and folders.
    Enter an Administrator password.
Choose to Enable RDS, or not.  I enable this by preference but it is not required.  This allows you to make updates to files using a CFML editor directly vs. having to move/FTP the files over if you’re working remotely.  Opponents to this argue that it’s potentially less secure, but for a lower environment I don’t see this as a major concern.
Confirm everything to kick off the install.
If all goes well you should see a message at the end stating that the install was successful.  I recommend you uncheck the box that asks you to open the CF Administrator in the default Web browser after the install.  NOTE: we will open it a different way during the post-installation tasks.  The worst thing that will happen if you forget to uncheck the box is that you might receive an error that the command prompt hung – not a big deal – just close it and move on to the next (final) steps.
    POST-INSTALLATION TASKS
    Verify CF Installation:
The installation will create a new folder in your program group: Start > Programs > Adobe > Coldfusion 8.  The default “Administrator” link will not work because it points to the wrong path: http://127.0.0.1/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm. The “127.0.0.1” or “localhost” path as you may recall in IIS, points by default to the “C:\inetpub\wwwroot” directory.  Our CFIDE files, however, are located within: D:\DEV.
To bring up the CF Administrator logon page, open up a Web browser and replace the “http://127.0.0.1” part of the path with the DNS path name to your CF environment (e.g., http://dev.test-site.com/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm).
This should bring up the Coldfusion Administrator Login screen.  Enter in the Administrator password you created during the install to log in and configure your application server.
Verify that your test-site renders correctly by typing in your test URL into a Web browser (e.g., http://dev.test-site.com).
Fix Application Pool Defaults to Re-enable SBS Web Applications:
At this point, Coldfusion Administrator and your test CMFL Web site should be working properly.  The problem is, default SBS Web applications like OWA, RWW and Companyweb will throw errors and fail to start.  Fortunately, this is easily remedied by performing the following steps:
In IIS Manager, double-click the server instance in the left-hand pane.  Click on “Application Pools” to display the list of server application pools in the center pane.
In the “Actions” pane on the right-hand side, click “Set Application Pool Defaults”.
Change “Enable 32-Bit Applications” - the second item from the top – from “True” to “False” this time.  This should re-enable the SBS applications, which would otherwise result in 500 errors (e.g., OWA, RWW, Companyweb, etc.).  There is no need to restart IIS.
Open a Web browser and test that you can once again connect to OWA, RWW and Companyweb successfully.
In IIS click to highlight the application pool for your new site (e.g., “test-site”).  In the right-hand pane, click “Advanced Settings”.  Ensure that “Enable 32-Bit Applications” – second item from the top – is set to “True” for this application pool specifically.
Lastly, jump up and down for joy!  Hopefully now, everything is working.  Best of luck!! ..Paul D (MCP).

First, it would be a good idea for you to specify what distro of Linux you're using, as not all are supported by Adobe.
Second, this is probably your problem right here:
    http://askubuntu.com/questions/40416/why-is-lib-libc-so-6-missing
In a nutshell, CF expects the 32-bit version of libc.so.6 to be in /lib, but it's probably not. You might be able to modify the installer to point to the correct location for that file, or you might be able to create a symlink to the file - but as the above link describes, creating a symlink might have negative consequences.
As for installing CF 8 64-bit, that's only available with Enterprise, not Standard. If you want CF Standard 64-bit, you need to upgrade to CF 9.

  • I install iTunes on Windows 7 64-bit, it opens, it crashes

The subject says it all, pretty much.
    - I install the latest iTunes (downloaded 01/31/2014)
    - I open it, then go to iTunes store, and it hangs itself after login
    OR
    - I open it, then close it, then hold SHIFT and double-click, as I want the library on a separate drive. I can select the drive, but in the meantime, the program hangs itself. In this case, onlt for about 30 minutes. Then it asks if I want to see the tutorials. I try to close it. It's been running in this state for over 8 hours now.
I've tried uninstalling everything related to itunes, even removing all files from the registry. Each time I install, I get the same result. I have not prior install history left on this PC, as no install had been ever authorized when I had it on this machine for a few days back 3-4 months ago. The machine I used before has been repurposed, and doesn't have the software anymore... But it's also Windows 7 64-bit
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

When I run the iTunes64setup.exe it says: "The thingy is not a valid win32 application."
That generally indicates that the installer has been getting damaged on the download.
What web browser have you been using for downloading the iTunes64Setup.exe? Does it make any difference if you use Firefox instead of IE for the download (or vice versa)?

  • Bit locker Mutliple Drives Mutliple OS's

I have a laptop with two hard drive in it.  The primary has Windows 7 Enterprise and is a member of the corporate domain.  The secondary has Server 2008 R2 and is a member of the lab domain.  There is no trust or association between domain.
The laptop does the Windows multi-boot off the primary drive.  I want to enable bit locker to secure the drives.
If the two windows environments were exclusively separate, setting up bit locker on each drive independently would be pretty straight forward, but when I'm in one OS, I will frequently need to get files and data from the other drive (and no, making each
drive big enough to hold all it's own data is not an option, plus the synchronization headache).  Both drives will need to be bit locked to their respective OS, but the other drive will need to be accessible.
And not to make things too easy, the secondary drive, which i put in an optical drive bay carrier, routinely gets pulled (not while the system is running, of course) out and popped into a USB case to be used as a library transfer drive.
    So....
the Windows 7 drive needs to be natively bit locked.  and be accessible when running Windows 2008 from the second drive.
the Windows 2008 R2 drive needs to be natively bit locked, and be accessible when running Windows 7 from the first drive, and be accessible when run as a stand-alone USB drive on another system.
I would appreciate any wisdom you can share to make this all work.  And please presume that i know next to nothing about installing and running bit locker, because that's pretty much true.
Let me know if you need more information about my configuration.
    Thanks

    Hi,
"and be accessible when run as a stand-alone USB drive on another system."
Firstly, if you enable bitlocker for one drive, it will be encrypted always until you decrypt it. Thus after you insert it to any system, it need to enter the credential to access it.
And then, if you want to access one drive in another computer, you need to get the shared permission. After you' re granted the sufficient permission, you could access it no matter if it's encrypted. Of course, another computer must be started.

  • Bit locker drive encryption failed due to power failer and hard disk corrupted

I ran Bitlocker drive ecryption drive D. My pc is windows 7 ultimate, while it was in progress of 1% due to power failer the encryption failed, when power resume the drive didn't showed the file format nor the size but it shows the size in disk management.
It showed like this in My computer
I do Have the recovery code password and back of recovery password so I ran the "manage-bde-_unlock D:-rp[my code ]
and my pc got hang  no other option rather than to press the restart button.
then I used commang "repair-bde -force D:I:-rp[my rp] and following info showed but it stucked in 1% about 8 hours, and there was no increase in the pecentage
I also connected the hardisk to mac but all othe partation showed but didn't showed the encrypted one.
I had lots of memorable picture and other backups so any one kindly help me to get out of this problem. Thanks for help

    Hi,
The BitLocker encryption and decryption processes can be interrupted by turning the computer off, and it will resume where it left off the next time Windows starts. This is true even if the power is suddenly unavailable.
    Bitlocker-repair (repair-bde)  tool
can't repair a drive that failed during the encryption or decryption process.
In addition, could you please explain a bit for what drive you are trying to deal with? external one?
When you first restart your PC, have you seen any signs that indicate that the encryption is in process?
Regarding your scenario, please take a look to see if the following articles could help here:
Scenario 11: Recovering Data Protected by BitLocker Drive Encryption (Windows 7)
Besides, when running manage-bde command, did we followed the steps mentioned in the below article?

  • Data Recovery from Partitioned and formatted Bit Locker Encrypted Drive

Recently because of some issues in windows 7 installation from windows 8 installed OS. it was giving as the disc is dynamic windows can not be installed on it. so at last after struggling hard no other solution i partitioned and formatted my whole
drive so all data gone included the drive which was encrypted by bit lockers.
For recovery i used many software such as ontrack easy recover, get data back, recovery my files professional edition but still i couldnt able to recover my data from that drive. then i found some suggestion Using CMD to decrypt my data first
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee523219(WS.10).aspx
where it shows it successfully decrypt my data at that moment my drives were in RAW format excluding on which windows is installed and then in CMD i check Chdsk which also shows no problem found. but now problem is still i coudnt able to recover
my data then i format the drive D and again tried to recover data using above software after decryption still no result.
Now i need assistance how i can recover my encrypted drive as it was partitioned and also formatted but decrypted also as i have its recovery key too. thanks

    Hi ,
I am afraid that we cannot get the data back if the drive has been formatted even if use the
    BitLocker Repair Tool.
You’d better contact your local data recovery center to try to get data back.

  • X201 Woes - Do not buy one

I offer this as my story as an X201 owner and the 'support' i have been given by Lenovo. It is a sad but causionary tale and I would suggest that anyone planning to buy a Lenovo laptop takes note.
I initially sent this email on the 8th March and have thus far received no response to it:
I was given this email address to make a complaint regarding the ongoing issue I currently have with my new Lenovo Thinkpad X201 that I purchased from your website just before Christmas. Whilst your support staff have been generally courteous and polite (this is certainly not a complaint against them), getting some resolution to my problem has proved difficult, expensive and time consuming. My problem’s start with an intermittent fault with my wireless that seems to cut out for no reason and will not restart unless I reboot the computer. I initially contacted your colleagues on the 28th Feb regarding this issue after logging my issue online and being given an issue number 01DM8W5 . They remoted onto my laptop and whilst keeping me on the phone for 40mins looked at the various settings without changing much except 1 power saving setting within power manager. I was asked to get in contact should this solve not solve the issue and I was reasonably satisfied that they had attempted to fix the issue, I asked if this was a known issue and I was told it was not. As I work in IT I checked the relevant forums on Lenovo and found that a number of people have mentioned this issue. I include a number here for you to see
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/Persistent-WIFI-problem-wity-my-X201-ta...
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x201-wireless-always-suddenly-turn-off-and-can...
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/552579-x201-intel-n-6200-severe-wifi-issues.html
I have also included a couple of other articles that describe the same issue on other laptops (wireless card issue?)
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T510-Advanced-N-6200-wireless-turns-off-its...
As the issue occurred again, I contacted your team on the 1st March and explained that the fix had not done the job. Your colleague immediately stated that I should return the laptop complete for repair and probable reinstall and as I only have a carry in warranty I would have to bring it into one of your service centres. I explained that this would not be a problem (although I was not impressed at the idea given the expense of the laptop in the first place) and given that I live on the edge of London I assumed that IBM/Lenovo would have a service centre in the capital. I was still in discussion with your colleague when I realised that I was required to take this to Colchester which is 58 miles (approx 95km away). I explained that this was not acceptable and the offer of a courier was made (something again not easy given that it requires you to be in between 9-5 with no specific time given for collection and losing my laptop for at least a week, I do have to work). I explained to your colleague that I hadn’t tried  suggested fixes from your forum (uninstalled access connections, Intel drivers and tried reinstalling) and before wasting my/your time/money it may be advisable to try these first.
Sadly these also did not manage to fix the issues either so I contacted you again on the 7th March to organise a courier collection, another member of your team stated that issue number  01DM8W5 had been closed and I would have to open another (issue number A1LXVYL). Although annoying, I explained what had been happening and your colleague asked to remote onto my computer. I agreed and explained that on occasions when I have issues Fn+F5 may not work (it wasn’t). I also explained the fixes I had tried and that even though she denied this was a known issue the Lenovo forum suggested otherwise. She then proceeded to reinstall access connections and the Intel drivers, restarted the pc and after another 30 mins on the phone (at my expense) said it was now working so the issue must be fixed and she would not get the pc collected. I explained that the definition of an intermittent fault is that it doesn’t always happen and all she had done is reinstall what I had already reinstalled. She then opened a cmd screen and started a ping going and stated I was required to provide a print screen when it next happens. I explained that the ping would not stop as the computer was currently on a wired connected to ensure that the remote connection was not dropped (something that had been requested on previous calls and something I had explained to your colleague), at this point she seemed to be trying to get rid of me. As she would still not accept there was an issue I suggested that it would probably be best that I call back when the issue next occurs on a wired connection so she could see what has happen. She said this was the best plan and that was how we left it.
The issue has reoccurred today (8th March), and I have spoken to another one of your representatives. I explained what had been said previously and that they were welcome to log onto my pc to check the issue. I was now told this was not required and I would be sent an email with the details on how to post the laptop back to the service centre. I explained that a courier had been previously offered and then after checking this I was offered this again (9-5, no time slot). Luckily, my fiancé is off work tomorrow and is able to wait in for the collection, I hope it turns up. I checked with your colleague and I explained that I have copied a number of files etc to my new pc and would I need to back it all up. I was told that I could remove the hard drive and battery and just send back the shell for testing and I will be without it for at least 6 working days.
As you can see, I have not had a great experience with your support team wasting both my time/money to try and sort this out. As from tomorrow I am going to be without the laptop that I have spent the best part of £1000 on for a minimum of a week and my fiancé is going to have to wait in, possibly for the whole day, to have it collected. It also seems that your support representative seemed unwilling to accept that this is a known issue and didn’t seem to follow the same procedures for dealing with it. Due to these issues and the time/expense I have had to go to thus far to get my laptop repaired I would think that it would only be fair that my warranty to be reset from the date the laptop is finally returned to me for a whole year and if I encounter any further issues with the wireless I should have the option of returning the laptop in full and receive a full complete refund. I have been tried to be as reasonable as possible with your company and with your staff and I hope you that will be with me. I hope you understand my frustration and can return my laptop in fully working order shortly. If you could acknowledge receipt of this email it would be appreciated.
After receiving no response i contacted support again today (30th March) as the problem is still not solved and here is the update i sent in.
The laptop was collected on Wednesday 9th March in the box the laptop was delivered in. It spent a week in the repair centre and I was contacted by support to say that the centre now required my hard drive as they could not replicate the problem. I explained that this was unacceptable as I had personal data locked on the drive and had not removed it as I had been told to keep the hard drive. I suggested they were just going to do a complete system restore which the engineer checked and agreed with, they said they would send the laptop back to me so I could do this. I also asked if my complaint email had been received as I had received no response and I was promised that this was being escalated to management. I asked what would happen if the laptop still did not work, the support engineer would not give me an answer stating that management would have to decide this. I also asked for a timeframe regarding a response to my email and again this was not forthcoming.
When I finally collected the laptop from my local DHL centre which is only open/can deliver Mon-Fri 9-5 (do they think people don’t have to work) I copied all the data off of the laptop and did a full system recovery. Sadly this still has not solved the issue so today (30th March) I have again contacted the support line and explained that it still is still not working and I have still not received a response to my email. After a long wait whilst the engineer looked for my email I was assured that it had been escalated to ‘The Management’ and they were looking into it. I requested to speak to ‘the management’ as after all this time I was running low on patience but was told they were unavailable to talk to (even though the engineer had apparently just spoken to them) and I would get an email at some point (no timescale given again). I thanked the engineer for his help and finally received this complaints reference from him shortly afterwards.
I am writing this with a network cable plugged in as the wireless has indeed cut out again. I have done some research myself in the event viewer (something none of the support engineers investigated) and have found these entries that seem to occur every time it happens
The description for Event ID 5005 from source NETwNs64 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
    \Device\NDMP7
    Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6200 AGN
The specified resource type cannot be found in the image file
I also get the same error with event id 5007 and 5032.
So now if you could please organise collection of the laptop as soon as possible so I can purchase a reliable ‘business’ laptop it would be appreciated.
    Regards
I have sadly given up and now all i want is my money back.

Thanks for your replies. The problem is not with the aerials or the connection. I'm pretty sure it's the card and I told them as much when i spoke to them. It does still appear in device manager, sometimes stating that the device can not start, not always though. When the issue occurs there are events in the event manager that suggest that the wireless card is playing up, something that none of the so called technical support even checked. The bluetooth remains working so and there isn't any real play in the swtich, so I would suggest that isn't the issue. I've read about almost exacly the same issue and they sent him a replacement wireless card, something i'd be quite happy to do but again something they refused to do.
As an update, i've finally got a response from their complaints department after being told to write to a different email address (sadly forwarding is something they don't know how to do) and I have been told that they will not give me a refund until the problem has occured 3 times. I did argue that it has happened many more times than that and given the 2 times they have remoted onto my pc and i time i sent it back this constitutes 3 times but I will give them one more chance to fix it. They once again wanted me to pay to send it in but agreed to a courier after a bit of coaxing. Luckily the fiancee has got a day off to wait in for the collection as it could be anytime from 9-5. Fingers crossed this will be the end of it, sadly the bitter taste it has left won't leave for a while.

I'm not across what the EBS recommended setting for this is, or if there is one.  But try running:
    ulimit -n
... and if the number is low, edit /etc/security/limits.conf , add some entries for increased "soft nofile" and "hard nofile" and run sysctl -p.  See Linux & Java tips: Too many open files .

  • Spry menu bar woes (add submenu levels and edit width)

So i need some spry menu bar help. Apparently as a graphic designer i'm also expected to webdesign, and while i can solve most problems with a good googling, i seem to be at  my wit's end fo this one.  So the site i'm doing has a header ith a horizontal spry pop-up menubar (in Dreamweaver CS4). But some problems arise:  when i manually add another submenu level, they don't show up in chrome or FF, they do werk perfectly in IE6. I just add the following code to the codepage:
    <li><a href="#" class="MenuBarItemSubmenu">audio equipment</a>             <ul>               <li><a href="#">Digital Matrix Systems</a></li>               <ul>               <li><a href="#">R2 Digital Audio Matrix</a></li>               </ul>               <li><a href="#">pre-amplifiers &amp; mixers</a></li>               <ul>               <li><a href="#">PMX124</a></li>               </ul>
the PMX never pops open in FF an chrome.. Should i be adding anything else to another part of the code?  i'd like my submenu text to have a slight indent? How ever, when i add the indent to ul.menubarhorizontal ul , it elongates the submeny boxes in IE6, while looking normal (width) in chrome and FF. WHat part of the CSS style should i change to just have the text scoot over a bit without it really affecting the box layout? ALso, if anyone could tell me how to add a wee bit of spacing above the text (and beneath), i'd be eternally gratefull.  Also, how do i change the with of the submenus? seing as my main buttons are images, but the names i ned to put in my submenus are turning out to be pretty long...
    HTML code for the menu:

I have reinstalled Mac OSX 10.6.3 and done the updates from there.
I have reinstalled ilife 11 from disk and done the updates.
I have deleted all the suggested files and then redone install and updates.
I have tried just reinstalling iphoto and doing updates.
Is there any way to get a replacement -  /Library/Frameworks/iLifeSlideshow.framework/Versions/A/iLifeSlideshow
    file with the right architecture?
