64 bits hosts on 32bits guest cause computer reboot (vbox)

Hi,
I've enabled AMD-V technology on my bios, and cpu's infos shows that it's compatible with amd-V technology.
However, when i try to boot a 64bits hosts (amd-v emulation is enabled in vbox too), it cause a hard reboot.
Digging a bit land me to http://www.ianbmacdonald.com/wordpress/ … ntu-karmic .
Is there anything similar to do in arch?
Regards.

I see it's been a while and nobody responded.  Did you find the solution? On laptops, most have settings that will tell it what to do when the lid is closed.Options are often 'do nothing', 'hibernate', 'shut down', etc.You might look into that. I found this because I was searching to see how to connect to a pc with LogMeIn Rescue when the pc is listed as offline.  I found this happens when the pc is sleeping. Good luck,

    Please help asap.

are you sure you use the "x64" drivers. (those for 64 bit systems.)
Do you use a pci slot that isn't shared with other hardware that runs when your Os is acti've?
See manual motherboard for selecting the ideal pci-slot(the one that's not or less shared irq with other running devices.)
Perhaps your cd-rom is 32bit only and you first need to download the 64 bit based drivers.
And let the downloaded drivers install the card instead of windows plug&pray

My Itunes will not launch after downloading and I have tried all the troubleshooting for itunes for Windows 7 64-bit. Do I need to system reboot my computer than try to download it again?

I'm having a very similar issue, paired with iTunes not being able to get online.
iTunes shows up in processes and then hangs at 17,000 K or so -- sometimes it will start up, but that (if it occurs) is a delay of literal hours.
Pretty meticulously went through all the 'cannot connect' trouble shooting, and have uninstalled, restarted, and then reinstalled every piece of apple software; issue is just as firm. Starting in safe mode or admin mode don't fix it; signing in as a different user doesn't fix it.

  • When firefox starts up, the windows xp c drive 'dirty' bit gets set forcing a 'chkdsk' on reboot. How fix?

when firefox 5.0.1 starts up, it sets the windows c drive dirty bit on and the next time the computer reboots it causes a 'chkdsk'-annoying. I've checked this and seen it happening using 'fsutil dirty query c:' and it's off before firefox starts and on afterwards. I can even turn it off diddling with the, for example, add-ons option and disabling/enabling an add-on like zoom-in for instance.
    How fix?

Update your video drivers. Your system details shows you to be running drivers dated 11-11-2005 which are too old to run Firefox efficiently.
You can update to the current version which is 275.33 by dowloading from http://www.nvidia.com
Remove the existing drivers via Add/Remove Programs first.

  • Msi gtx 970 gaming 4gb lose display and then computer reboots when EXITING games

When the graphics card is no longer under stress the display will lose signal and usually the computer reboots seconds later. During use, the card performs perfectly. I have a second computer so I have already tried the card with a different motherboard and power supply, with the same problem. There isn't an error message but checking the event log it states a sudden and unexpected loss of power had occurred. My power supplies are both new and gold rated. My drivers are current and the bios is the latest released (the one with the patch for the fans). I'm at a loss to explain the problem and will RMA as a last resort. Any ideas guys? Thanks

Use Afterburner and check "Force Constant Voltage" in their Settings. I think what causes these are the power saving sort of designs for both the mobo and vga, tbh, which makes the voltage more unstable. I think check this would help the problem a bit. Maybe you guys can try.
I figured that it was an issue with hardware stepping down  to save power and I've forced voltage to remain constant but the crash still happens unfortunately.

  • Computer reboots when I connect my iPod to a USB 2.0 slot

    Here are my specs:
    - I have the new iPod 60 GigaByte hardrive version.
    - Operating System on my PC: Windows XP
    - CPU: AMD Athalon XP 1.8 gHz
    - My PC is several years old and has four built-in USB 1.1 slots. My iPod works on all of these USB 1.1 ports, albeit slow. (And when I connect iPod to these slots, I get the message telling me I have a high speed device connected to a non-high speed USB port, which I understand.)
    - I just installed a Dual-Link USB 2.0 and Firewire PCI card (from ADS tech) into an empty PCI slot on my PC. It has 3 USB 2.0 slots and two Fire-wire slots. The card is properly installed because windows immediately recognized it.
Now, I have tested two other devices on my new USB 2.0 slots. I have tested my mouse and a logitech gaming controller (although these devices are actually based on the older USB 1.1 technology), and these devices work in the USB 2.0 slots.
But, when I connect the iPod to any of the USB 2.0 slots, I get the little bell sound meaning that the computer is recognizing it. The iPod then displays the "Do not disconnect" message. But then the computer will begin rebooting by iteself. It will then attempt to reboot windows and almost gets there, but then reboots again. It continues this never-ending cycle of rebooting until I disconnect the iPod and then the computer reboots completely. Inserting the iPod will cause it to reboot again. This happens whether or not I have the iTunes program running.
Can anyone give me insight for resolving this problem? Has anyone else had this problem before?

  • Computer reboots when connecting ipod to USB cable.

Has this happened to anyone else?
All of a sudden now, whenever I connect my ipod to the USB cable, it makes my computer reboot! And it doesn't stop rebooting until I disconnect the ipod!
I have no idea why this is happening, and I don't know how to make it stop.
I am really starting to lose my faith in EVERY item that Apple has created.

When I connect my ipod to USB immediately following taking it off my AC adapter, it causes my computer (PC, XP) to restart.
Reinstall Windows. This has nothing to do with iTunes or any other Apple software, because that functionality is entirely Windows based.
If reinstalling windows fresh (and doing all the updates) doesn't fix it, then you have a hardware problem on the PC.

  • WRT160N - VMWare (WinXP host) bars all guest OS from Internet

I have a Linksys WRT160N wireless router, bought new last fall to replace a used DLink DI-625. Currently the main computer is a homebuilt running WinXP SP3, connected by Ethernet cable. No issues on this main setup.
I am running VMWare Workstation 6 and trying to learn my way around Ubuntu Linux as a guest OS. The virtual Ethernet connection is set as Bridged. Unfortunately, I am unable to get any Web browser to connect. I also tried Windows 2000 as a guest OS and cannot connect to Web from there either. Nothing improves whether I use Bridged or NAT connection. Nothing changes whether I have Comodo Firewall Pro running or not (on principal host: WinXP SP3). On the other hand, I am able to run Microsoft's own VirtualPC with Win2K as guest, and connect to Web just fine.
I suspect that if I go into the router config and set Application permissions just right, I just might get what I need. However, I need help doing this because the available parameters are a little over my head. Please help!
P.S. I asked elsewhere for a different problem and was told to update firmware. The router came with 1.02.4 from December 2007. The latest v1 file from the company file library was 1.02.2 from November.  What the hey...? (I "downdated" and hope I don't suffer the consequences)

I have no trouble with HTTP, FTP, BitTorrents or other Internet activity on my host OS. My primary computer is wired to the WRT160N. The ISP is Aliant, providing "ultra" high-speed ADSL; a step up from regular.
(I also have a newer HP laptop running Vista Home, which does suffer intermittent connects whether by wireless or cable, but that is a separate topic.)

  • It only uses 32bit, and my computer needs 64bit.   Please help.

I am a non profit.  I ordered Photo shop Elements12 for PC  for my office.  It is a download only.  It doesn't dowload on my computer.  It only uses 32bit, and my computer needs 64bit.   Please help. The Adobe photoshop elements 12 is useless to me.  I can't seem to get anyone at Techsoup to help and trying to get Adobe to help is runaround.  What should I do to get it to run on my computer.  Please someone in the forum let me know how switch out the download for the correct one.

64-bit windows can run 32-bit applications just fine and always has.  They are just limited to a small amount of memory.   If something isn’t working it’s likely another problem like an incomplete download or trying to install the Mac version on a PC or something like that.
You can try downloading and installing from the PSE12 link, here, to see if it works any better:
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/other-downloads.html
If you can’t get things to work, then please post a screenshot of the error and a description of what you’re trying to do that lead to the error.
Also the term “downloading” refers to transferring a file from a remote server, across the internet, to your local computer.   The term “install” means running the program that was downloaded on your local computer to put the working program on your computer that you can run.
It would be helpful to know if your saying that the actual transfer across the internet part isn’t working, or if that part seemed to work, but when you run that installer program you’re seeing an error.

Mine does this too. I've got an older IBM ThinkPad T30 with USB 1 built-in, running Windows XP SP2. So, I bought a PCMCIA USB 2.0 adapter card. All of my other devices (external hard drives, etc.) work just fine when they're plugged into it. However, when I plug my iPod into it, Windows shows a "blue screen of death" for just a second, then it reboots the ThinkPad.
I'm betting that it's a driver issue with the PCMCIA adapter card, so I'm going to start troubleshooting there. If I find a fix, I'll post it here!

  • Imac host doesn't see target computer

    Hello,
I'm having difficulty copying files from the host computer to the target computer. The target computer is an Imac 700Mhz G3 and the host is a 400Mhz (DV?) G3. Both are running OS 10.3.9. The problem is that the target computer does not show up on the host desktop. I've tried rebooting the host but to no avail. Is this a firewire firmware issue? How can I check the firewire firmware version? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Al

    Hey Al,
    Have you read through:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
The only thing there is requirements for the target:
"iMac (Slot Loading) with Firmware version 2.4 or later"
but you've got to have 4.1.9 since you're running 10.3.9.
But to check it go to "about this Mac > more info > Hardware overview
    It should say:
    "Boot ROM Version 4.1.9 f1"
    Try another FireWire cord.
    Try different FireWire spigots
Try switching host and target wouldn't make any difference for dragging files around.
Could have a blown FireWire ( A client blew hers out with a bad cord, I mean it was smoked! Scorch marks on the board and everything. Those are easy to diagnose "Uhhh I think it's this place where it's totally burned")

  • File transfer problem between Host OS and Guest OS

    Hi,
I have WIndows7 32 bit as a host OS in C drive. and i have installed the Virtualbox in D drive and installed CentOS 6 in virtual box as a guest OS.
After installing the Guest Additions in CentOS and set the Drg n Drop-Bidirectional. it permits to create shared folder in CentOS but i am not able to drag n drop to any file from host to guest and vice versa.
Also when i plug the pendrive it copy the partially data in guest OS then it show unpluggeed automatically in guest OS. It copy only .rpm file in guest OS (CentOS)
please suggest how to copy the file from Host OS to guest OS and vice versa.
I have installed VirtualBox-4.3.20-96997. i have installed also Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.20-96996.vbox-extpack on windows ( on host OS).
    Thanks.

The following is from the virtualbox user manual:
Drag’n’Drop This setting allows to enable Drag and Drop: Select a file on the desktop, click the left mouse button, move the mouse to the VM window and release the mouse button. The file is copied from the host to the guest. This feature is currently only implemented for Linux guests and only for copying files from the host to the guest.
I guess that explains your experience with Drag'n Drop.
Regarding USB and the pen drive, you cannot access a USB device in the host and guest OS at the same time. The technology does not support this. You will either have to capture the device to be used/mounted in the host or guest OS. Unless you configure the USB device in the virtual machine settings, the device will normally be captured by the host OS and become inaccessible by the guest OS.
To copy files between Windows and a VirtualBox Linux guest you can use Putty and it's pscp.exe to copy files from Windows to Linux and vise versa. You may have o enable SSH on your Linux side. There was a post here yesterday, please check the last forum discussions. Alternatively you can also use WinSCP if you want a GUI tool.

If you are a developer, or have a similar personality, there is an aftermarket EFI-64 "work-alike" program you can load into memory instead of 64-bit firmware. It is too complicated for regular folks.
You must already have upgraded your Memory and your graphics card to use this solution, and your Mac will not operate quite normally. Any problems with it are unsupported.

  • What's the recommended setting for "Process memory usage" ("process virtual" in UI) for a 64-bit host on a 64-bit OS?

    Hi gurus
In resource based throttling, what's the recommended setting for "Process memory usage" ("process virtual" in the resource based throttling tab of the UI) for a 64-bit host
    on a 64-bit Windows OS?
    According to MS (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee308808(v=bts.10).aspx):
    "By default, the
Process memory usage throttling threshold is set to 25. If this value is exceeded and the BizTalk process memory usage is more than 300 MB, a throttling condition may occur. On a 32-bit
server, you can increase the Process memory usage value to 50. On a 64-bit server, you can increase this value to 100. This allows for more memory consumption by the BizTalk process before throttling
    occurs."
Does this mean that 100 is the recommended setting for a 64-bit host on a 64-bit Windows?
    Thanks
    Michael Brandt Lassen

    Hi Michael,
Recommended setting is the default setting which is 25 .dot.
If your situation is abnormal and you see message delivery throttling state to “4” when the following performance counters are high or if you expect any of you integration
process could have impact on following counters, then you can consider the suggestion by Microsoft. Don’t change the default setting.
    High process memory
    Process memory usage (MB)
    Process memory usage threshold (MB)
You can see these counters under “BizTalk:MessageAgent”
You can gauge these performance counter and its maximum values if have done any regression/performance testing in your test servers. If you have seen these counters having
high values and causing throttling, then you can update the Process memory usage.
Or unexpectedly you’re process high throughput messages in production which is causing these counters to go high and cause throttling, then up can update the Process memory
    usage.
The above two cases where I know my expected process usage (by doing performance testing) or suddenly my production server processing has gone high due to unexpected business
hike (or any reasons) which caused throttling, then do changes to default throttling setting.
Just changing the default setting without actual reason could have adverse effect where you end up allocating
more processing capacities but the actual message processing message usage ever is low means you end up investing in underutilised resources.

  • Clean XP SP3, Boot Camp 2.1, Everquest II causes spontaneous reboot

    Hello all,
I have a small Boot Camp partition that has XP and Everquest II on it with an October 2006 MacBook Pro C2D (FW800, ATI graphics). That's its sole purpose for existing. Unfortunately, the computer spontaneously reboots a short time after starting the EQ2 client.
I just did a completely clean Windows XP SP3 install (using MSDN XP SP3 32-bit Professional), installed Boot Camp 2.0 and Apple Updated to 2.1, and Windows Updated about a dozen items. I ran the EQ2 client and again, after about 3-4 minutes, the computer reboots.
I would love to get this thing to run reliably. I only use it a few times a year (when traveling overnight, etc.) but it is a great way to while away the time. I would welcome any suggestions, please.
(I tried a Vista 64-bit install but that didn't seem to have many Boot Camp drivers, and I couldn't get the wireless or several other things running.)
    Cheers!

I have the same exact model MBP as you, and from research on the internet all others with the same problem have the same aswell. I honestly believe there is an issue with the ATI graphics on the MBP C2D Merom laptops and EverQuest. I doubt a hardware issue but most likely a driver issue. At one point I used to run EQ2 fine. But, for the past year or so I have had constant reboots when I enter the game.
My most recent attempt actually was ok for the first few minutes but the moment I began to cast a spell it locked and rebooted. I thought it was just EQ2 and the drivers but I also tested EQ1 and I can play that game fine all day long with only one problem. When it starts to rain in the game that results in an automatic lock and reboot otherwise fine. Since you cant turn off the rain that result is not good either. I have not had issues with any other game...LOTRO, EVE, QuakeWars....etc...
A friend who has had several nvidia based mbp's has yet to have one reboot.
I have tried every single driver version I can find and none seem to work. I hope to one day play EQ2 again but, not going to go out of upgrade cycle and buy a new MBP with Nvidia graphics just for that...
Sorry to say I dont have a fix for you but letting you know you are not alone...I and others have the same issue with the same model as you but no fix in sight
