64-bits why not?

My Linux colleague wants to install RHEL 5.
He asked us i we could install the 64-bits version for Oracle 10, in sted of the 32-bit version.
We have actually never thought about it, so i am searching for arguments and i only find pro's.
More memory to allocate, less i/o etc.
But my questions is:
Are there reasons not to install the 64bit version?
Any remarks are welcome.
Best regards,
hvdtol

You are correct, the major advantage of having 64bit vs 32bit Oracle is more addressable memory. If you only install client the difference is not big deal but that subject your application requirement. Some 64bit application require 64bit Oracle library.
There might not many advantages besides addressable memory but that's a big one. With modern database getting bigger and bigger, the 4G addressable memory limit of 32bit became quite troublesome. If you are sure you don't need more than 4G SGA for your database, you can still install 32bit version on 64bit system.

Now I can start LR 5 and I can watch/modify pictures, but as soon as I try to import new pictures LR 5 stops and gives the message "your LR 5 64-bit does not work correctly - searching for solution". I have not changed anything in my computer since lasttime LR 5 worked properly, only the registry was optimized by Norton 360.

  • If win 7 64 bit will not support Firefox 10 why offer it

I have just read that you will not support 64 bit win 7 O/s so why am I being offered it twice now to be honest.
you are correct this M/C is 32 bit but not my other one which is 64 bit

Firefox Nightly it is not in the Release channel (Release channel: This is the standard version where the majority of users, including you are. It's fully tested and stable).
Nightly channel: is the most unstable and buggy one. It's where all the tests are performed.
so you can not see it in your update options.

  • ACR conversion of CR2 to DNG = 14-bit Not 16-bit :Why?

If I open one of my Canon 5D Mark II CR2 raw files (several in different folders and taken at different times were tested) in ACR (7.2) and save it as a DNG file (with no ACR edits) Bridge shows the DNG as being a 14-bit file whereas if I save it as a PSD file it has a 16-bit depth. Exactly the same thing happens if I convert the CR2 file to DNG using the Adobe DNG Converter (7.2 version). You might answer that as a raw file, it does not yet have a bit depth because it has not been rendered, and the 14-bit description really has no meaning. But if that is the case then Bridge's reporting that all my original CR2 files are 16-bit is also meaningless.
Why is there a difference in the reported, and presumeably actual, bit depths?
Interestingly, if I then open the "Bridge reported"14-bit DNG file in Ps (CS6) and save it as a PSD, the new PSD is shown, presumeably correctly, as being 16-bit.
Please help a poor confused soul.

    Andrew_Hart wrote:
But that can't be the whole story.
Well, as it relates to Bridge, is is...as Eric said, the bit depth reported to Bridge is non-standard unless the file has been processed as DNG.
    Andrew_Hart wrote:
So if the DNG shows the correct bit depth stored in, as you say, "the standard TIFF header location", why can't the CR2, now rendered as a TIFF, do the same?
Because...Bridge isn't reporting the correct info (which I tried to explain and you seem to refuse to accept)...
    Andrew_Hart wrote:
This logic seems to me to be strengthened further by the fact that, as we all know, there is no viewing of a raw file without rendering. So when viewing a preview/thumbnail of a DNG in Bridge, you aren't actually viewing the DNG at all, you are viewing a preview/thumbnail of something which has been demosaiced, had a tone curve applied to it, et cetera, namely, I presume, another TIFF. If that TIFF can report its correct bit depth to Bridge, then why not the TIFF rendered from the CR2 as well?
Because, well, the headers are not standard and Bridge kinda reads the wrong thing with many raw/rendered files (unless you convert to DNG).
Not sure why this is so hard to understand...Bridge is a browser app that tries (but often fails) to display the "right thing". But often can't due to the file's metadata.
This really is not a thing to dwell on...you may think there is a tempest is a teapot, but it means nothing. Again, these are not the droids you were looking for (do you even understand the reference-Google it).
This whole thing is a red herring...you may as well give it up. Seriously, you are not getting anywhere here...raw is raw and you should generally ignore Bridge for most reports...because, well, Bridge isn't accurate because the standards for reporting bit depth are not standard...that's what is causing the differences. • T400 4GB Vista or Windows 7 32 bits with PAE. Why not possible?

    Hello,
I have read some articles about enabling 4GB of RAM in Windows Vista 32 bit version enabling PAE as discussed here: http://www.ocmodshop.com/ocmodshop.aspx?a=989
I have tried this method and others and I have disabled DEP in Windows and in the BIOS.
Is this possible to reach 4 GB of RAM in 32 bit OS with PAE in T400? I have read that in windows 2008 is possible (also linux) but why not in Vista32 or windows7 32?
    Cheers!

  • I created an Apple ID using my ISP Email when I registered at the Store/Apple Support Communities/iTunes/Face Time and it does not work in iChat. Why Not ?

    Question:-
I created an Apple ID using my ISP Email when I registered at the Store/Apple Support Communities/iTunes/Face Time or other portal and it does not work in iChat. Why Not ?
    Answer:-
For a Name to work in iChat it has to be an Valid AIM screen Name.
Only Apple IDs from the @mac.com ending names registered here  and the Mobileme (@Me.com ending) names are Valid with the AIM service as well as being Apple IDs
(I am still working on info about registering with iCloud at the moment but if this does give you an @Me.com email it may well be a valid AIM name as well)
    NOTES:-
The @mac.com page works by linking an external (Non Apple) email with a @mac.com name.
This External Email cannot be one linked to an Existing Apple ID (you have to use a second email or register at AIM )
The options at AIM are to use your existing email or create new name and link the existing only for Password recovery
MobileMe (@me.com ending names) were valid Emails addresses, Apple IDs AND a Valid AIM Screen Name
@mac.com names look like emails but are only Apple IDs and iChat/AIM Valid Screen Names.
The AIM registration page seems to be pushing you to register [email protected] This is relatively new and I have not followed through the pages to find out if it a valid AIM email (Previously you could register a name without an @whatever.com suffix)

    Question:-
So I have my current [email protected] email in iChat as I thought as I had linked that to an Apple ID it was a Valid iChat Name.  It keeps coming up with a UserName or Password Invalid message.  What do I do next ?
    Answer:-
    Open iChat
Go to the Menu under the iChat name in the Menu Bar and then Preferences and then Accounts in the new window.
Commonly written as iChat > Preferences > Accounts as directions/actions to take.
If it displays with a Yellow running name in the list you have a choice.
Either register it at AIM (I would use a different password to the ISP Login) and then change the password only in iChat  (It may take you to confirm any Confirmation email from AIM first) in iChat > Preferences > Accounts
Or you register a new Name at AIM (Or at @mac.com) and enter that (details below)
If you have a Blue Globe name  (@mac.com) that will not Login the chances are that it the password that is the issue.
Apple lets you create longer passwords than can be used with the AIM Servers.
Change the Password at iForgot to no more than 16 characters.
Then change the password in iChat as details above.
Adding a new Account/Screen Name in iChat (that is valid with the AIM servers)
    Open iChat if not launched.
Go to iChat Menu > Preferences > Accounts
Click the Add ( + )  Button at the bottom of the list.
Choose in the top item drop down either @Mac.com or AIM depending on what you registered
Add the name (with @mac.com the software will add the @mac.com bit)
Add in the password.  (If you don't add it now iChat will ask you each time you open it)
    Click Done.
The Buddy List should open (New Window)
The Accounts part of the Preferences should now have the new name and you should be looking at the details.
You can add something in the Description line which will then title the Buddy List (Useful when you have two or more names) and make it show up as that in the iChat Menu > Accounts and the Window Menu of iChat when logged in.
You can then highlight any other Account/Screen Name you don't want to use and use the Minus ( - ) Button to delete it.

  • Boot Camp: sees 64-bit Win 7 USB install as 32-bit, why??

Attempting to use the Boot Camp Assistant on my new iMac 27 (late 2012) with a regular 1TB HDD.   I had boot camp create a install disk on a USB flash drive from an existing Windows 7 Pro 64-bit ISO... it's the same ISO I used to install 64-bit Win7 on a PC earlier.
After selecting/dividing partitions and clicking Install, I immediately get the error "Need 64-bit Windows installation USB drive or DVD".  Searched the discussion forums but kept reading about people using 32-bit ISO's, which isn't the problem.    Why isn't the 64-bit installer not being recognized as such?

Ok so my workaround was the following:
    1. download windows 7 Premium for free on the microsoft web site
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/windo ws-7-home-premium-64bit-iso-download/709dcc12-d120-435d-91cd-52e1dd0f4c24
    2. use bootcamp to transfer to USB Key
    3. continue normal install
    4. Use your Windows 7 Premium Key that you got wehn you purchased the software.
    5. Enjoy

  • Why not 2880 Limit?

Does anyone know if there are plans to remove the 2880 image
dimension limit in a future version of Flash? I understant the need
to limit memory consumption, but why not limit the total image size
(in memory) instead of the size in a particular dimension? We work
with a lot of panoramic photos which exceed 2880 pixels in width,
but may only be 600 pixels in height.

Easy to over come. cut in bits and stitch.
I do lots of panoramic content too, many clients run hotels
    or do interior design.
Very common for portfolios. Anyway, I will cut the image in 5
    to 8 pieces than
place it in movie clip, each frame has one slice of the
    image. Than i duplicate the
frames, place one after another and get one long MC,
    sometimes 8,000 pixels big.
    Works w/o any problem.

  • Open a jpg; save a jpg without loss; why not?

I just purchased Elements 8 to run under Windows 7.
If I open a jpg in the editor, why do I have to experience the loss of saving it as a jpg? It's already a jpg.
In Photoshop it is possible to open and save jpg's repeatedly without loss. But not in Elements? Why not?
I understand that I have the option to save the file in photoshop format and then save it as a jpg again only after the final editing is done and the image flattened.
And I understand that I have the option to save it as a high-resolution jpg more than once.
But in Photoshop neither of those processes is necessary.
It is inconvenient not to be able to open an existing jpg and save it as such, without having to experience the loss inherent in making it a jpg again, when it is already a jpg to begin with.
Clearly this problem has been solved in Photoshop. Why not in Elements?
    Thanks.

Saving as a jpg implies loss.
save a RAW file as a JPG -- you have loss -- cannot be avoided because JPG files hold less datasave the same RAW file as a JPG and should get the same result -- same loss
when a JPG is loaded into PSE, the missing pixels are rebuilt by expanding the data to a normalized form, but this WILL differ from the original RAW, it has to since the JPG save discarded data -- so saving again as a JPG will also discard data and since the loaded expanded form differred from the original form, this new save will discard data a bit differently -- so you get accumulated loss - hopefully not as large as the first JPG save.
Does PhotoShop differ from this?  I don't see how -- unless it retains the original and keeps changes (which I believe LR does and maybe NX2, not sure).
So you CAN eliminate compounding the loss by always applying edits to the original -- but that would seem like a difficult task when you get into layers for example, so perhaps PhotoShop can reduce it for some edits -- but I don't have photoshop so I cannot test.

  • Bit Rate Not Working

I'm setting my bit rate differently and it is not affecting the size of the file. I'm setting the main bit rate (not Max), and I'm in an SD session setting the SD settings. Any ideas why it might not be making any difference on the file size. I've tried the lowest bit rate and the worst motion setting and it still makes no difference of the file size.

    Welcome to the Boards
Your best bet is to encode video outside of DVD SP using Compressor or other encoder and not set it in DVD SP. Take a look at page 66, changing preferences will not reencode assets already bought it. YOu can delete the asset and PAR files, or better yet, duplicate the .MOV with a new name then use the newly named asset and place it in the track.
But using Compressor helps avoid having to jump through those hoops.

  • 64 bits: why should I use it?

Just for the sake of discussion: If I have a program offered in 32 and 64 bit modes, why should I use the 64 bit version?
For example, the well known Videolan Player, aka VLC Media Player, recently updated to version 1.0.2, comes in 32 an 64 bit flavors. When would one version be used in lieu of the other?
And saying "because it is bigger and hence better" is not true. Even Apple points out in the developer pages about the 64-bit fallacy: in that mode, all data structures duplicate in size and if the hardware remains the same, performance will suffer cause you have to push twice the amount of information.

I just did a test with VLC Player (version 1.0.2), I played the same video in both 32 bit and 64 bit modes (NOTE: NOT talking about the kernel, but the program). Played it several times in both modes and even alternated between modes. In 64 bit mode it caused one of my processors to spike to 104% usage for the first 20 sec before dropping to 4-5%. In 32 bit mode processor usage remained at 4-5% the entire time.
Played the same video in Quicktime Player X in both modes and saw no difference (used 5-8% processor usage).
So to answer the question about when to use one version over the other I would say if one version causes notable problems/issues and the other doesn't than use the one that doesn't. Generally you shouldn't see a noticeable difference except in high-end programs that are crunching massive amounts of data.

  • CS5 64 bit does not support TWAIN

I am running Win 7 64 bit and just upgraded from CS2 to CS5.  CS5 cannot see my scanner (Canon 8400F) even though Canon has a 64 bit driver that I installed.  After downloading and installing the TWAIN plugin I spent several hours trying to figure out why CS5 still could not see my scanner.  Finally I saw where Adobe says it does not support TWAIN in 64 bit because it is an "outdated technology" and that "most manufacturers" do not provide 64 bit drivers for their TWAIN scanners. CANON DOES.
There does not seem to be any reason why Adobe does not support 64 bit TWAIN except that TWAIN is "outdated."  It still works fine for me (with my CS2), why not with CS5.  It does not seem that I (or we) should have to buy a new scanner just because I (or we) upgraded to CS5.
    Are you listening Adobe????

I have found a somewhat "second rate" solution to this problem.  If I run CS5 in 32 bit mode my scanner is there.  Now if I could do ythe same thing in 64 bit mode all would be well.

  • Why or why not single-host installation?

    Hi friends,
I'm collecting your opinions and experiences here... :)
Why or why not to install complete, i.e. both Infra and Mid-tier, AS release 2 on a single host? -does it not basically come down to hardware configuration? (if the cpu and RAM is "good" enough, then no problems)
And multi-host installations is mostly for expansion and segmentation reasons?
    Thanks,
    Fredrik

In my experience the reason NOT to do a single host installation is performance.
I tried doing a single-host installation on an NT box running dual Pentium 500mhz processors and 1GB of ram. Everything seemed to work just fine. The infrastructure went in one Oracle home, the app server went in another. All of the admin functions took forever. The EM website was a complete pain to use. The machine clearly was short on memory and short on CPU.
Keep in mind the infrastructure installation includes a complete application server, it's own instance of the Oracle database, plus a bunch of additional adminstration specific bits. It's a lot of stuff. The application server installation duplicates a lot. You end up running two instances of Apache, a bunch (5-10) instances of the J2EE container, etc.
The good news (for us anyway) is that the infrastructure installation can also be used to manager Oracle databases. It's instance of the Oracle database is the repository for the admin data. We were going to set up an dedicated box for Oracle Enterprise Manager anyway for our new 9i databases. So putting the infrastructure on it's own box ends up causing us no grief at all. Also we plan on running 4 instances of the app server (for various sites we have around the world). So again having the infrastructure on it's own box really makes sense for us.
To sum up, in my limited experience the single-host solution worked just fine (though it was not used in a production setting) but if you go that way you'll want a beefy box.
