64 or 34 bit on Mac os
Hi
I just about to download CF for the first time, I'm a brand
new user. I am planning on using it with My SQL, I have a mac with
10.5.2 Leopard.
What's the best version for me to get the 64 or 32 bit
version? is the difference just in performance?
Also, does this version include the new 8.01 update? and
finally does it work correctly on Mac OS 10.5 without making any
changes? I've heard a few people say that it didn't work properly
on mac os without making changes.
Thanks
Ricky55
What Mac do you have? What processor (in About This Mac under
the Apple menu)?
Only certain processors are 64-bit.
Yes, if you download CF today, it will include the 8.0.1
update. And yes, it will install and run on Mac OS 10.5.2 without
making any changes.

Rumor confirmed: CS4 will remain 32-bit for Mac, but will be 64-bit in Windows
Photoshop, Lightroom, and Adobe's 64-bit roadmap
http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/
CS4 will remain 32-bit for Mac, but will be 64-bit in Windows.i For the most part, it seems like most of us in prepress/photography/creative are fine with our Macs with 4 to 8 or 16 gb of memory installed. A 64 bit app isn't going to change MY life or how I work.
Well it may do, considering the roof is well below the ram capacity and the OS has to do the hard work.
"In our testing, when an app isn't using a large data set (one that would otherwise require memory swapping), the speedup due to running in 64-bit mode is around 8-12%."
Look to when that actually starts happening...its not where your ram roof is.
Probably a cross grade here...we've been running 64 bit with 3d for a while now, and shifting that roof has allowed much more heavy scene data to be created easily.
Read the article, it's not just PS that's affected...there may be limited scope for the need in AI, but AE would see the light.
Put it this way, we can see the advantages...and obviously adobe can...they just havent been capable of applying that to the apple yet. -

Photoshop CS5 won't run in 64-bit on Mac Pro anymore
Hi,
Wondered if anyone could help with the problem I'm having with Photoshop CS5. It's suddenly not working anymore and it crashes on launch straight away. I haven't installed any new updates or moved the app from its original install directory or added anything to my system so don't know why it's crashing the only thing I've worked out is that I can oen in 32-bit mode so assume the problem must be specific to something running in the 64-bit mode.
Here's the report I get, thanks for any help in advance:

0x7fff87c99000 - 0x7fff87cdafff com.apHi, for anyone reading this thread, I finally fixed the issue causing Photoshop CS5 to crash in 64-bit but not in 32-bit mode. I left the problem and came back to it fresh the next morning and tried to think of any additional plug-ins I installed, which was only 1 and looking at there website told me it was 64-bit. I also installed 1 javascript and a few optional Adobe plug-ins, all of which were removed and still didn't help. They were all minor plug-ins I thought they wouldn't be the cause so put them back. Finally I thought of any changes I made to the UI side of Photoshop and that's where I found it! I'd added some extra Actions to the Actions palette. It seem so minor a thing but it worked, Photoshop now boots up in 64-bit again! I tested my theory again by trying to re-add the Actions with with Action Set I saved before hand and each time I did it crashed. So for anyone else having this issue try this and see if it helps, if it doesn't try removing any additions you added to any other palettes and see if that helps.

Windows 7 64 bit on Mac Pro Ver 1.1 installation options!
Hi All, There seems to be a lot of concern that Win 7 wont run on MP V:1.1. I have this MP and do want to install Win 7 on it.
My Spec is as follows:
Mac Pro (2 x 2.66GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon) Ver 1.1. HD4870 Graphics Card and a 24" Dell U2410 Display. My O/S is Lion.
Question: Will it work installed using Lion's Boot Camp on a freshly formated hard drive?
Question. If Boot Camp is the problem can I install Windows 7 as a totally independent O/S on freshly formated hard drive on my Mac Pro by pulling the Lion O/S out making it exclusively a Windows Pc?
This option, if possible would be very inconvenient as I suppose I would have to remove the Hard Drive containing the Lion O/S every time I wanted to use Win 7?
Can anyone advise me pleaseI just thought I would share my Mac Pro 1.1 experience. I recently had to replace a failed memory riser card by buying a pair from ebay (they both failed a month apart) and took advantage of the opportunity to replace my Mac Pro 2006 with the 2008 model for $700 and inserted my drives and upgraded to 10.8.5. Just holding off on Mavericks for now... Bought a Radeon 5770 and graphics are just peachy (i'm not a gamer). Then I put a samsung ssd 512gb in as the system drive and a 3tb for data so that machine is going fine
What to do with the 2006 Mac Pro?. No one wants it on ebay so I thought i'd try it on Windows. Windows 32bit loads via boot camp once you figure out how to recognise the sata bus (depends on your windows 7 dvd version i think) but under 32 bit you only get 2gb usable ram ! something , not just video is addressing 2gb so that *****. You cannot boot off the 64bit dvd (try it) so i installed 64bit windows 7 on a clean drive on my core2dou pc then put the drive in my 4core xeon mac pro. It booted fine and installed alot of drivers for the xeons automatically. Then I got some drivers from 64bit bootcamp and sound drivers from the realtek website. Then , I upgraded to 64 bit windows 8 pro and everything still works. Then, I downloaded the free windows 8.1 pro update and everything still works..... As PCs go, this is still a pretty fast machine, and gives little away to , say an i5 or i7. If you put in an SSD and gamers video card it would fly, but i dont need that.... -
How can I upgrade Windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit on Mac Pro bought in 2011?
I was able to install Windows 7 32 bit version on Mac Pro bought this year with OS 10.6.7 version with bootcamp. How can I upgrade it to Windows 7 64 bit?
Custom clean install is the only way - you can't 'upgrade' 32-bit OS to 64-bit, they are different kernel and drivers.

Fileshare between my Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon (64-bit) & Power Mac 9600
I want to make my Power Macintosh 9600/233 (Mac OS 9) a shared computer with my Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon (64-bit)(Mac OS 10.6.6). I am using a Netopia Model 3346N-VGx DSL Ethernet Managed Switch to network with my Samsung printer and the Mac Book Pro.
I also have a Power PC G4 (Mac OS 10.5.8) connected (via a Ziplinq 48" Retractable Crossover Network Cable) to a Farallon EtherWave 10 Base-T AAUI Transceiver, which in turn is connected to the Netopia, from which I can share files. All of this is ethernet connectivity.
I thought I could connect my 9600 using the same method as for the G4 or by connecting the ethernet cable from the 9600 directly into the Mac Pro Quad Core. However, neither of these methods work.
An additional stumbling block is that I have not used this 9600 for several years and am not sure of its account name. I'm fairly certain of its password. But because I don't have a second monitor for this machine, I can't muddle my way in.
My questions:
1. What might be a network solution to this dilemma?
2. Or, do I need to get another monitor for this computer and leave it un-networked and just transfer files manually?
3. Or, would whatever hard drives are in the 9600 be transferable into the networked G4 or the main Mac Pro? (not sure what they are.)
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.Oh man, what a dilemma...
1. What might be a network solution to this dilemma?
Without a monitor on the 9600, almost none. At the very least you'll need to configure the server with appropriate network settings for your environment, and that can't be done headless.
You might only need a display for long enough to setup the network, but you'll need one all the same.
Once the network is configured your options are either AFP or FTP, but I'm not even sure the old version of AFP is supported anymore, which means you may need to fire up an FTP client on the 9600 and push the files to your MacPro.
2. Or, do I need to get another monitor for this computer and leave it un-networked and just transfer files manually?
As mentioned above, you're going to need a monitor at the very least to configure the network settings. I'd be inclined to say at that point you might as well copy the files off any way you can and put the 9600 to rest. If you're really, really fortunate and the 9600 has a CD burner I'd probably use that and count myself lucky
3. Or, would whatever hard drives are in the 9600 be transferable into the networked G4 or the main Mac Pro? (not sure what they are.)
The 9600 shipped with SCSI drives, which no current Mac support (at least without a SCSI card), so there's no way to remove the drive from the 9600 and attach it directly to the MacPro. -
Questions about Installing Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit on Mac Pro
Hi, I have an early 2009 Quad Core Mac Pro which is running Snow Leopard. I have 4 internal drives in my Mac Pro. Does WIndows 7 have to be installed on the same drive I have Snow Leopard installed or can it be on any of my drives. My boot drive has 215 gb of free space. 2 of them have 100gb of free space and my 2 tb drive has 40 gb of free space. To install Windows 7, do I have to partition one of my drives which would mean erasing all my data? How much free space do I need for windows 7 and programs, etc? Would Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit work? Any info is greatly appreciated
Read the link ""The hatter"" gave you and read the "FAQ's", it will answer quite a few of your questions. Read the Installation manual a few times to familiarize yourself with it before you start and it will make it a lot easier when the time comes.
Windows will be little bit quicker on the Mac-Boot disk only because of your SSD drive. It's rare, but you leave yourself open for problems if anything gets buggered up with both OS's on the same drive. You could lose the Mac side also. You have the chance to save yourself one less problem with it being on a separate drive.
You can install Windows on "any" INternal drive with Boot Camp. Windows can only be installed in the #1 slot on a MacPro if there are any other drives in it. (You can put it in any slot after it's been installed.) And Windows can't be installed on an EXternal drive from a Mac.
Your best bet would be either put one of the internal drives into an external HD enclosure ($15/$20) and replacing it with another blank HD and just splitting it into two partitions or try to free up more space on one of the other drives so you have more room.
Or like ""The hatter""mentioned.
"""You could put OS X HD in lower optical drive bay and put in a drive just for Windows."""
The only problem with making room on an already full drive is that some times some invisible "root" files will be left behind and Boot Camp CAN'T move it and you could get a generic "Can't Install, Files in the way" type error. So you would have to Backup, erase, reinstall to clean it up that way.
It's not so much installing Windows without Boot Camp, but you need BootCamp in order to use the "Start-up Disk" preferences. The Finder can't see the Windows install with out it. No big deal if you want to use the "Option" Key every time to reboot. Boot Camp Also has a couple of preferences like the F-Keys, etc, that you may need to use. It Could be a bigger headache. Boot Camp just makes it A LOT easier for the -non- geeks. -
I just got a MAC OS X 10.7.4 which has Java 32 and 64 bit installed. Am unable to make deposits on line. I get a msg stating it appears I am using 64 bit java and I need 32 bit java for MAC. I have changed order of java in preferences but it does not make a difference. Suggestions?

Got the mic working in Skype w/Windows 7 RC 64 bit on Mac Book Pro
I managed to get the mic working in Skype running Windows 7 RC 64 bit on my Mac Book Pro.
It's a Skype problem. The program automatically selects the DIGITAL input. You need to change it to the RealTex internal microphone.
From Skype, go into Tools -> Options -> Audio Settings and make sure the microphone is selected instead of the digital input.
Works for me.You may need to modify the installer script that may block anything beyond certain build; or install drivers individually.
Boot Camp 2.1 is now over a year old. There ARE newer drivers on newer later copies of OS X, both retail (10.5.6) and OEM, and in order to be "compatible" those are still 2.0.xxx versions. People have run into trouble installing their newer BC only to have BC 2.1 corrupt their install.
Snow Leopard includes later drivers and part of BC 3.0.
I bought Leopard (10.5.0) before I needed or wanted really to - I felt it would need six months to work out the kinks, but I also wanted 'new' Boot Camp, too. Well, it had 2.0 all right, but same drivers as Boot Camp 1.4 beta from Sept '07 and earlier.
Windows 7 is pretty good about finding what is missing or needed, but there are some motherboard specific drivers it may not provide. Some news sites have said that later builds than 7100 have support for Nvidia logicboards and others that were missing or problematic... but I'd hold off and avoid leaked builds.
If you can tolerate or live with limited functionality or source drivers and patch things, even the Apple installer and drivers, you may be okay.
I'm impressed, Windows installer, update, ability to rollback, check points, and how well it runs. Much more reliable and stable and problem free. One thing I would do is make sure you have enough room, and allow 20GB / 24% free space just so you have a couple restore check points in case you need to. It is all too easy to use 10-15GB for those and come in handy.
Any vendor that writes API and drivers has found they have their work cut out, and that of course includes Kaspersky and others.
The first and only time I attempted to install Apple Setup Windows put up an alert "Known Incompatible" known to cause stability issues or something. And I was and generally do use the Windows 7 Compatibility Mode for installing drivers (control click). -

64 Bit version Mac Pro 64 bit machine
Do you need to get 64 Bit version of Windows XP in order to use Paralell or to run XP exclusively via dual boot?
You need Vista to run natively and use more than 2GB.
You do not need to get 64-bit XP Pro, which will work in Fusion (and Parallels I assume).
Apple doesn't support XP Pro 64-bit, and getting drivers can be iffy. -
Javascript 32 (I think) bit Intel Mac Can't Access Sites.
I don't know what's going on. I've the proper version of Flashplayer installed and working but cannot access YouTube or Facebook through Safari or Firefox. The error message I get on YouTube is that I must not have FlashPlayer or Javascript on my computer but I know the error cannot be with Flashplayer as I am running version 9.0_124 on Leopard.
Even when I try to access the Adobe website the page is displayed incorrectly. If anybody knows what's going on and how to remedy this, I'll buy them a cold one.
Message was edited by: mmccolemanSome users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:

I cannot get my Mac Pro (Original) MacPro1,1 to boot with the 64 Bit kernel in 10.6.8 (this is a 2 x 3Dual-Core Intel Xeon machine).
Firmware = MP11.005C.B08 (EFI 1.2) 1.7f10 (SMC 1.1)
Will it not run the 64 bit kernel?
Is there a firmware upgrade to allow this?
Should I bother?
It won't boot with the Key 6 & 4 method.
or using Terminal command;
sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance...
EricBecause it can't and doesn't have a 64-bit supported firmware.
UEFI (EFI64) was not finalized and adopted until very late 2007 and introduced in 2008, by Apple, Intel, other members of EFI Group and Unified EFI. The Mac Pro Mid-2010 was the first time though that 64-bit mode was the default.
Does it matter? not really. you can't install 48GB RAM anyway, while there are some improvements from 64-bit kernal.
Also can't boot Windows 7 64-bit DVD to install properly. But you can run Windows 64-bit kernel because you have a 64-bit Xeon.

Mac Pro 2,8 QuadCore - MS Small Business Server 2008 Premium
Hello,
I want to do something little bit strange..
Is it possible to install/run SBS 2008 Premium incl. SQL Server 2008 on a 2010 Mac Pro?
I successfully installed this OS on a late 2009 Mac Mini (2,5 Ghz - 8 GB RAM - 200 GB SSD) and so far it works fine.. although I already installed it yesterday.
But.. I want a little bit more performance, so I want to use the Mac Pro (16 GB RAM - SSD). The plan is to install the SBS 2008 on a Boot Camp Partition and use the Mac Pro only as a Windows Server.
Does anybody have any experience with this?
Thanks a lot and greetings from Hamburg, Germany
MarcoHi,
I just want to add what happened over the past few weeks.
Everything is fine!
Our SBS 2008 Server runs on a 2.8 Quad Core Mac Pro and everything seems to work correctly. What I didn't know before is that one can install an actual Windows-Version (not only Win7, but also SBS 2008) natively on a an 64-Bit Intel-Mac.
I formatted the drive as MBR (MasterBoot Record) and then did the normal installation process. During the install process I had to install the Ethernet-Driver manually for finishing the overall installation. After that there's only the installation for the BootCamp drivers left, which is important to use the correct driver for the graphics card, Apple keyboard and mouse etc.
Before that I've tested it with a 2009 MacMini and a Core i3 2010 iMac. And it worked, too. So, for the future I could only use Macs if I want to run Windows natively
In addition to the MacPro SBS 2008, I installed Windows 7 (32-Bit) natively on a 20" white iMac 2006, another license on a 2008 MacMini and a third license on a 2010 Core i3 iMac.
So far, everything is ok... love it
Marco
