640x480 or 720x540

Hi
I'm exporting a project from iMovie08 using the option Export Quicktime (movies to apple tv) to see in apple tv trough HDMI. The result is a 640x480 resolution, thus if I use export movie Large, Imovie uses 720x540. I cannot see the difference, besides a bit more sized movie in the Mac and a bit more data. What's the best option ?
The original source were a series of clips from a sony cybershot camera in 640x480
The result is very nice showing in the widescreen tv (using the first option QT)
But I'm testing to change the properties project from 4:3 ratio to 16:9 ratio.
The first result was bad (exported movie Large or QT). The image had low definition, thus it filled the whole screen.
So now I?m exporting with Medium size to see the results.
My question is : Is there a way that I can see a movie original source 640x480 in 16:9 ratio without loosing quality ?

Yes I just tested. It's no use. The only way is to crop but this will cut major scenes. So I will stick with Export QT Movie to Apple TV 640x480 (4:3 ratio). I still do not know if it's better 720x540. From what I read it seems that if the source was made in 640x480, resizing to 720x540 will not do much difference in a widescreen tv. But in the iMac of course the movie will be much larger.
Like to hear opinions.
Thank you

I loose both sound tracks in the last chapter when I burn a project to a disc in iDVD. The sound tracks are there if I play the movie in iDVD before burning to disc, but as soon as I try turn burn to disc the original sound track & the sound track imported from iTunes disappears in the majority of the last chapter.
I'am using the latest version of iMovie & IDVD.  The project in iDVD is listed as 96 minutes & 3.9GB & I'am using an LG single sided DVD 120 Min 4.7GB

    Hi
    May be something here.
    No audio on DVD disc.
    Most common origin.
    1. Imported audio from iTunes.
    • In iTunes copy out as an Audio-CD .aiff (Same as played on standard Stereo CD - no .mp3)
    • Use this in Your movie project
    2. Low - Free Space on Start-up/Boot/Internal/Mac OS Hard disk makes it hard for iMovie to work as intended.
Down to 1.3 GB and it doesn’t work - especially audio don’t migrate over to Media Browser
    (iM’08 & 09)
    3. Material in iMovie’08 & 09 - Shared to Media Browser and here selected as Large
large.m4v. It silenced out this project in iDVD. By making a slight alteration - provoking it to ask for a new Share/Publish to Media Browser and here selecting 640x480 - and audio was back when a new iDVD project was created including this movie.

Downgrade Perian from recent versions back to version 1.0.

  • TS2289 Audio in iMovie 11 files but missing in sections when shared to iDVD. The movie and audio plays fine in iMovie but my burned iDVD  movie is missing some audio .

I imported a movie into iMovie 11 from a Canon Vixia HFR 300 SD card with no problem. I have a new iMac running OsX 18.8.4 I think. I added chapter markers and shared it with iDVD. And burned it to a DVD.  Towards the end of this 30 minute movie the sound just stops. I do remember some screen came up when I wanted to burn DVD that said something was wrong with files but I couldn't figure what do to fix it and allowed me to continue. Any ideas?

    Hi
Either the problem is in iMovie or in iDVD
    two notes
    No Audio in iMovie
Most common origin is use of audio from iTunes.
    Work around -
    • Select needed audio to one new playlist
    • Copy out this as an Audio-CD .aiff (not .mp3)
    • Use this in the movie-project
    Other origins are
    1. strange / alient file formats as -
    • .mp3, .avi, .wmv etc
    • Convert them into .aiff 48kHz 16-bit and use this
    2. the Mac is set wrongly in regard of midi -
    • Close iMovie and other programs
    • Start GarageBand
    • Make a new GB-project and play some notes
    • Close GB and Save
    • Now try iMovie again
    3. No audio when playback in iMovie 1 to HD 6.
    a. in iMovie pref. - deselect ” Playback via Camera”
    b. in System preferences - see that Audio out is not set to zero. Mine often does this
    without me knowing why.
    4. iMovie’08 & 09 & 11
    • Toggle audio-scimming by cmd-K
    Stuttering audio and video
    1. FileVault is ON - Turn it off
    2. More than 50 audio files in a movie-project
Mix down to one audio clip
    3. Project is stored on one (USB) external hard disk - should be a FireWire one
    4. the External hard disk is not Mac OS Extended formatted - but
UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange and this will not work for Video.
    5. To little free space on internal boot hard disk.
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space when project is imported and edited and this goes for
4x3 SD Video. For 16x9 HD my guess would be about 5 times more at least.
Neither Mac OS, iMovie or iDVD can address any other hard disk than the boot drive for it’s
scratch files. (Unlike Final Cut Express/Pro where You select scratch disk/s)
    6. Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
    No audio on DVD disc.

  • Detail preserving upscale aspect ratio issue

My goal is to take a 720x480 60i DV file (non square pixel) and upscale to 960x720 60p square pixel for YouTube upload.
My workflow seems to work, except I'm not quite getting the correct aspect ratio at the end. I'm getting an extra 5 pixels on the bottom and top of my image so it's being squished by a total of 10 pixels. I have uploaded a screen capture to demonstrate this. In case the image preview doesn't work here's a Flickr URL:
    https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8623/16158021066_e52966ff22_o.jpg
On the left is a simple AE scale, I dragged the DV file into a timeline, and used the scale command to change the pixel resolution to 960x720 so the DV file stretches to fill the 4:3 frame as it should. Remember, I'm trying to get the DV file to square pixel aspect ratio for online viewing. On the right is the result of my workflow below using AE CC and detail preserving upscale. The 5 pixel gray bars are part of the movie file.
Import the DV master into After Effects CC
Right click the file in the project bin, go to Interpret footage, then MainSet Conform frame rate to 59.94, hit okay
Drag this movie to the new composition button
Select the composition in the project bin, hit Command+K to open the comp properties
Set the frame size to 960x720
Set the duraction to double the original
Set pixel aspect ratio to square, hit okay
Select the video layer in the new comp, then go to the Layer menu, select Time, then Time Stretch and enter 200, then hit okay, the number should match the frame duration you just got from doubling the original
Now, add the Detail preserving upscale effect
    Click fit width
    Export

Thanks for the reply Mylenium. Typically I do separate operations like this using pre-composing but I found it made no difference so I removed that step in my original workflow so save work.
I'm not sure what "crooked HDV/ IMX values" means, can you elaborate?
If you mean my frame size of 960x720 this is the minimum that YouTube will need for a 4:3 video to generate a 60p video. They don't want 4:3 videos encoded in 16:9 wrappers and they have good reasons for this.
I'll say for the sake of simplicity to forget all about the 60p conversion here and focus on the 4:3 non square PAR conversion using the DPU (detail preserving upscale). I was able to accomplish this but it requires me re-scaling the video in After Effects first... to either 640x480 or 720x540 square pixel... but I'm just trying to avoid this additional scaling operation.

I burned a DVD using iDVD version 7.0. The audio files sound perfect on the computer but on the disc there are skipped areas noted in three different audio files. I did try different discs and burned discs on both my laptop and my desktop. I have used this program before but never encountered this problem.  Any tips? Thanks

  • Burned DVD loses audio near the end.

I am running IMovie 11, IDVD 7.12 on an IMac 2.7 Ghz i5 OS 10.8.2. I worked for about two months creating an IMovie that covers my family's entire seventeen day trip to Greece and Istanbul. It has a lot of title slides that explain in detail what we saw. I purchased copious amounts of Greek and Turkish music and appropriate sound effects. The Movie is about 150 minutes long. I previewed I Movie and it worked great. I transferred to IDVD by using share IDVD. I chose Professional Quality  and wide screen, NTSC and Dual layer disc. The DVD preview worked great, however after burning the disc there were two problems. First, the intro theme with drop zones and scene selections failed to appear. I suspect that was because there was something on the initial menu tile in the map. I suspect that created an autoplay but won't know until I burn another copy. Does that make sense to you?
Second, at about the 130th minute all of the audio was muted. Pictures and video footage were there also all of the title slides but no audio. I called Apple Support and since I am still qualified under Apple Care they agreed to help. First attempt was to delete the previous encoding and re-burn. that took three hours but the disc had the same problems. (At that time, neither myself not the apple tech thought about the autoplay feature, as I was most concerened about the audio problem.) After that disc failed again I called Apple Support again. This time we cleared out the autoplay function, trashed the two preference files for IDVD in the preferences folder and shutdown the computer. I started it back up by zapping the parameter ram. Option, Command, P and R buttons on start-up. I am currently re-encoding and reburning another dual layer disc. If this doesn't work, could the problem be the size of the project? Is there any way that I can take my IMovie project and split it into two sections of about an hour and fifteen minutes each then burn them through IDVD to two different discs? If this would work please tell me how to make a copy of my IMovie project and how I can split it in two. Also any other ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated. TIA

  • Yet another question about image resolution

Well, I tried to look this one up but I could not find what I was looking for.
I am trying to make an image that will fill a screen completely. I thought that the correct size would be 740x480. What happens though is that the vertical size is too small. In other words, the top or bottom has blank space and so it is not filling the screen. Am I using the wrong image size? Doesn't my tv display in 740x480? Where have I gone wrong?
    Thanks for your help!
    -not_store-bot

720x480 is the NTSC non-square pixel DV video image size.
For NTSC still digital images you need use a 4:3 aspect ratio like 640x480 (or 720x540)

    Hi
    My first two thoughts
    • Shared to Media Browser - BUT as Large or HD - try Medium !
    • audio from iTunes - use to go silent
    - in iTunes
    - Create a new PlayList with needed audio
    - BURN this as a standard Audio-CD (.aiff) - NOT .mp3
    - use the files on this CD in Your Movie project - I ALWAYS DO - and only use .aiff ever - never .mp3'

  • Audio portion stops when playing movie

The audio portion of my movie stops playing. I have remade the movie and the disc several times.  There is no indication, prior to watching it on TV, that there is a problem.  The burn is successful and when I open the file the movie plays fine on the computer.  I don't know if the way I have made the movie is contributing to the problem.  Obviously, I'm new to this so please bear with me if I'm giving too much information.  I have a total of four clips (movies?) that I bring into the idvd menu.  Three of the clips are based on months throughout the year.  The fourth clip is a combination of those three so that I have an undivided movie of the whole year.  I guess I'm questioning whether the reuse of the pictures and music make a difference even though they are independent clips.
I'm using imovie and idvd 11.
Do you have any suggestions as to why the music quits and/or how I can solve this most frustrating and time-consuming problem?  Thank you.

  • No audio in movies but ok in music

    WinXP, ITunes 10 (newbie)
Downloaded a couple of MPEG-4 and one interview to transfer to Iphone. The interview (music) plays fine but the 'movies' pvideo os ok but no sound. When I synced to Iphone they play fine. The audio (music) is showing a bit rate of 128 and a sample rate 44.1..  The two 'movies' show a bit rate of 93 on one and 127 on the other and both sample rates are 'unknown'.... When I play the videos from my HD they play fine through VLC media player. Also when I try to play ITunes tutorials from the help menu, they have no sound either....
    Suggestions please,
    L.

  • No audio in QTVR on IE6

We are developing a QTVR panorama and using audio with it for some background sounds. Works in every browser except IE6 (IE5 and 5.5 not tested). We have imported the audio as MP3 and the box in IE6 Internet Options for Play sound in web pages is checked. What's going on? Any help would be marvellous.

  • What size export to iDVD if source video is DV

I have an iMovie project that has source video in DV format.
I am exporting in order to create an iDVD project, but when I export using QT Pro, the settings there tell me the current size is 640 x 480. This has me confused because I was under the impression that DV is 768 x 576
Can anyone help please, what are the best export settings for importing to iDVD?

    Tom Wolsky wrote:
When you create a new project you have the option to set the frame rate. If you set it to 25 then it's good to go.
    Yes it's 25
If you're sharing using media browser or export movie you should be able to set it either 640x480 or 720x540. If you export to QuickTime Movie you can set the proper size, 720x576.
Yes I can do that, but what is confusing me is when I set current size in QT pro (export using Quicktime), it tells me the current size is 640 x 480. How can that be when all my clips are DV?
It depends why you're exporting and where you're trying to get to.
I'm exporting so I can create a DVD in iDVD. I can't use the direct share to iDVD because it crashes iDVD all the time.
I'm wondering if somehow the iMovie project really has converted the DV clips down from 768 x 576 to 640 x 480. Which would be a drag and if so then I suppose I should export at that size. If not then presumably I should set it to 720 x 576 as you say rather than 720 x 540.
I must admit I've never quite understood the square pixel thing.
    Thanks

  • KMix: Pulseaudio mixer only present when sound playing

    Hi guys,
Title says it all. I've searched this one extensively with no results. I've got kdebase-* and kmix 4.12.4-1; pulseaudio 5.0-1.
When sound is playing, I get the PulseAudio mixer present in KMix - it looks like
ALSA plug-in [plugin container]: ALSA Playback
which controls the same volume level as when I go into alsamixer in the terminal and control Master for PulseAudio. I have this set as my Master Channel for KMix so that when I use my volume control keys, it controls the sound normally and all is well.
However, when sound stops playing, the mixer disappears, so KMix picks a different master channel, such that when I do play sound again, my master channel is now bound to the HDMI output and, therefore, my volume control keys control the wrong level...
I've tried re-installing KMix and deleting the configuration files I could find like ~/.kde4/share/config/kmix{rc,ctrlrc} and ~/.kde4/share/apps/kmix/profiles, but with no luck. Any ideas?
    Thanks
