640x480 to 1024x768 without stretch on Widescreen

Thought I would pass along this information. I installed XP Pro on my iMac for the purpose of playing old Mac games that no longer run on the Mac. Since the games are Windows hybrids, I can play them full speed under Windows. Ironic, isn't it?
Anyway, games such as Riven, Myst III, and Myst IV all want non-widescreen resolutions. Windows will play in 640x480 to 1024x768, but the standard drivers stretch the screen out of proportion. Ruins the gameplay. After doing some searching, I found the solution.
I have an iMac (Early 2008) with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics. I went to ATI/AMD's website and you can download drivers for Bootcamp Windows XP. I downloaded the ATI Catalyst Control software. You need to update Windows to include .Net 2.0 Passport or later. You can do that with Windows Update by installing the .Net 3.5 combined updater. After that is done, then you can install the ATI Catalyst software.
Right click on the Desktop and you can open the Catalyst software. Click the Notebook Display Setting in the left column, and you have an option to Preserve Aspect Ratio. Check that option and click on Apply. Now when the game switches to 640x480 or other standard resolution, the aspect ratio will be preserved and the screen won't stretch to fill. Now you can play those old games in their true aspect ratio.
It is great fun playing Riven: The Sequel to Myst on DVD once again, especially since the old Mac requirements were PowerPC and Mac OS 8! The game plays great under XP Pro SP3 too. Now all my old software that no longer runs on the Mac (hybrid discs of course), can be used under Windows.
If you have an Intel Mac with graphics, such as NVidia, you should check their website to see if they offer similar software to give you more control over the resolutions. The ATI software that I refer to only applies to Intel Macs with ATI Graphics.

Shane - Its not squeezed. It just looks 4:3 in the Canvas.
I have DV-NTSC Anamorphic as my sequence. Is that correct?
Also, when I check the ANAMORPHIC box in the sequence setting it does make it fullscreen but when I drop the next clip it does not take effect.

  • How to increase the size of text boxes in FCPX without stretching the text inside?

How to increase the size of text boxes in FCPX without stretching the text inside?

There are two basic Title formats — I should say Layouts — available:  Text (plain) and Paragraph.  (The plain text version usually does not appear with the blue dot controls — those generally appear for the paragraph type control.)
If the Title is using a Paragraph layout, it's like having a mini version of Text Edit available inside FCPX. You can tell when you click on the text (when the title is selected) -- a rectangle will appear around the text like so:
double clicking on the text will give you the bounds controls which you can use to redefine the text area without distorting the text. Once selected, notice the button that appears in the top right corner of the canvas:
Pressing that will activate the ruler. You can right click on the ruler and add Tab Stops (left, right, center and decimal.)
So if the title uses paragraph formatting, you can create a very WYSIWYG type of display text (use the Text inspector to alter text selections within the paragraph bounds.)

  • Taking 4:3 to 16:9 without stretching..?

Is there an app (MPEG Streamclip or something) that can add black "pillars" (opposite of letterbox) to a 4:3 clip so it won't stretch in 16:9 ..?

You can "pillarize" your video (did I just coin a new term?) with MPEG Streamclip. Drop your 4:3 video in the app and select what format you'd like to export it to. Let's say, for qualities sake, you choose "Export to QuickTime" and select Apple DVCPRO50. Select the "FRAME SIZE" you want, which will most likely be 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 if you're striving for 16:9. Interlaced scaling will be pre-selected by default, and you may as well leave it selected. Just for the **** of it select "Better Downscaling." Can't hurt...supposedly improves the quality of conversions, though the conversions take slightly longer.
Okay, on to the pillars. One of the adjustment selections you'll see is "ZOOM," which changes the aspect ratio of the video. Leave the first setting where it is at 100%. It's the next setting called "X/Y" where the pillar/letterbox action is. You'll notice X/Y offers three choices. The first, by default, is "1." That simply leaves the video at the mercy of the frame size you've selected - meaning that it would stretch your 4:3 into a 16:9 video. Not what you want. The next choice is "1.333." That'll letterbox your video, which is great for converting 16:9 to 4:3. It's the last choice offered that'll give you pillars - "0.75." After selecting it click the "Preview" button to see if the adjustment takes you where you want to go. If it doesn't, than I've completely misunderstood your question! Sorry.
Incidentally, you can remove the pillars/letterboxing by changing the Zoom field from 100% to 133.3%, which would enlarge your picture to fit 16:9 without stretching it. Quality may suffer a bit, but it's worth experimenting with. (The Zoom "Center" feature is usually left at zero, unless you want to move the picture to the left or the right a bit).

  • Can You Add The Widescreen Filter Without Stretching Video In iDVD ?

I'm sure I have asked this in the past but cannot find the answer and my memory is lousy!
I have added the Widescreen Filter to all the clips in a normal 4:3 DV sequence and everything looks OK.
I export the QT Movie and when viewed in QT Player it still looks OK as a letterboxed 4:3.
However, when I import it into iDVD or DVDSP I cannot stop it from being ridiculously stretched.
I have tried setting projects as 4:3 and 16:9 in iDVD but the video always appears in the preview window badly stretched.
Is it possible to make it appear as 16:9 without distorting the image?

Would you Adam and Eve it !
It was less than 8 weeks ago I was saying how it worked perfectly!!!!!
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8207730&#8207730
However, now when I preview a movie (with the WS filter) in iDVD (or Simulate it in DVDSP) the image receives extra stretching.
Is it just that it normally appears like that in the preview but will play OK when burned to a DVD ?

  • 16:9 iMovie/iDVD stretched on Widescreen TV

I have already posted a question regarding poor quality of my iMovie/iDVD project when played on my Sony 52" LCD HDTV. This question has to do with aspect ratio. I created my video (all photos, transitions, titles, background music). I cropped all photos to 16:9 aspect ratio in Photoshop prior to loading them into iMovie. I set my settings to Widescreen in iDVD prior to burning. When played on my Sony TV, however, the photos are shown with letterbox black on top and bottom and they are stretched.
I also wanted to create a DVD for a family member who has a standard TV. So I took the same iDVD project and changed the setting to Standard 4:3 prior to burning. When played on that TV, the photos are all "clipped". I thought that iDVD would adjust the viewing so that the photos would be shown in full view with the black boxes on the sides.
Am I using the settings incorrectly?
    Thanks, Nancy

Thanks for the info. I downloaded myDVDedit and learned that my movie had been created with the setting "16:9 auto pan and scan and letterbox". I changed it to "16:9" and now it plays on my standard def. TV just fine (with letterbox). But I am very confused with the settings in myDVDedit. So I created 4 DVD's using the various settings to see what they would look like on my Sony 52" HDTV.
    1. 16:9 - video plays with letterbox top and bottom
    2. 16:9 auto letterbox - video plays with letterbox top and bottom
    3. 16:9 auto pan and scan - video fills the entire screen but sides are clipped
    4. 16:9 auto pan and scan and letterbox - video plays with letterbox top and bottom
    Here's my question:
If all of my photos in my movie (created in iMovie) have been cropped to a 16:9 ratio, why can't I get a 16:9 setting where the entire widescreen TV (16:9 ratio) is filled with the photo - without any letterbox or any side clipping? Because of the letterbox the actual aspect ratio of the photos change from 1.77 (16:9) to 2.39 (16:6.7) causing slight stretching/distortion.
I hope this all makes sense and you can give me a little more insight into this.
    Thanks again, Nancy

  • Making my Flash Canvas / HTML5 responsive without stretching project?

So I'm really close to completing this Flash-based Canvas project. Issue is I want it to scale down for different browser sizes. I kind of have that now.....sort of.
Let me try to explain. I have this link: Punk Rock Fitness | Made in LA Fitness | Los Angeles, CA
Which is 100% width but cuts off the height.
Then I have this link: http://purcraft.com/madeinla/home2_height.html
Which is 100% height but depending on your browser, it stretches out the height to fit. Which makes sense but it isn't ideal.
Same problem with 100% height and width......you get that fun house mirror effect, which isn't so desirable.
So what I'd like to find is a piece of script that makes my project 'responsive' so it scales much at the same ratio of the movie, without distortion. This movie is 1200x768 so for example, on an iPad it might be 768x492 on a 768x1024. Make sense?

I forgot to mention but when I check the WP-based page, I get the following two errors in Console:
TypeError: cjs.MovieClip is not a constructor
    }).prototype = p = new cjs.MovieClip();
    home2.js (line 170, col 19)
TypeError: lib.home2 is not a constructor
    exportRoot = new lib.home2();

  • How do I resize an image without stretching it?

I have an image of approx. 1000x1000px...  I need to make the image 500x200.  Everytime I try to resize the image it comes out looking "stretched".  Is there any way of resizing or shrinking the image in photoshop without distorting the image?
    Thanks!

Going from a 1:1 square aspect ratio to a 5:2 aspect ratio is quite a change in aspect ratio with out distortion at all you would need to crop off 60% the image or add canvas.  If you look at it this way you get a better understanding
Downsize the image from 1000x1000px to 500x500px and there will be no distortion now cut that image into two peices one 500x200 pixels leave 500x300 its a 40% 60% split
The other way is Downsize the image from 1000x1000px to 200x200px  there will be no distortion now add canvas to make the image 500x200pxb you will have what you want no distortion your whole image with a 300x200 side border

  • How do I export a Final Cut Express 4 movie using quick time conversion without stretching the image?

I have created a movie in Final Cut Express 4 using videos and still photos of various aspect ratios and resolutions.  Some of the photos are verticals.  When I try to use File>Export>Using Quick Time Conversion, my images end up being stretched horizontally when the video is finally processed.  I have tried preserving the aspect ratio but the video still ends up stretched horizontally.  What should my settings be in Quick time conversion?  I just want to make a video for YouTube.
    Thanks.  -Bob

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

  • Image to fit in landscape frame without stretching image

I want the main body of my landscape image  to bleed off the left edge of frame however this creates a white gap on the right edge. When I pull the image to the right it 'stretches'

With the Free Transform (E) or Direct Section (A) tools select the image, hold down Shift and drag one of the corner handles, which will constrain the sizing. You can also use Command-> or Command-< to increase or decrease the image size.

  • 640x480 video in without rendering it in Quicktime

Apple has released the new quicktime + Itunes 7.02 player. Quicktime now renders out in 640x480 video. But if i use an other video converter and attempt to put it on my ipod it wont work. It says (video not supported on this generation of ipod). It needs to be in the m4v format aka M-peg-4 video h.264. So is there a way i can render it out in another converter and work. Thats not as slow as quicktime please
Ipod 60gb (video)   Other OS   just give the name of a program and how well its worked for you

As far as I know there are a couple of encoders that can encode video at 640x480 for the ipod.
chekc the forums at ilounge.com for that list... I'm using nero recode and it does the trick...

  • Resizing to panoramic without stretching

My local newspaper has a section for readers to submit photos of the area.  They require that the photo be 10x2 for a panoramic.  Every time I try to resize to these dimensions, the image gets stretched out and doesn't look quite natural.  Other entries by other readers look ok.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks for any input.

As MTSTUNER says, the point is not to resize the image but to crop it to the required aspect ratio.  That is 5:1 (=10x2 or 2000x400).
You start out with a "regular" size image and crop.  Unless you create a stitched panorama, which is another story.

  • HD footage in 4:3 timeline project comes out stretched during playback!

    Hello Fellow Final Cutters,
I am doing some projections for a theatre show, and need to project in 4:3 aspect to maximize screen area on an unusual shaped screen. I am using FCP6 and monitoring onto both my Apple 20" display and/or NEC (native 4:3) projector with display settings set to 1024x768. My sequence settings are Custom size 1024x768, square pixels or PAL ratio, field dominance none, compression Animation, Photo Jpeg, or ProRes422. I've tried all combinations of this but the problem is, I can monitor the correct aspect when the frame is STILL, but when PLAYING it squeezes into 16:9.
This will be a problem when doing test projections in rehearsals, as it won't fit the custom 4:3 screen in the set. Exporting a QT displays fine in 4:3 on the external displays, it is just when playing from the FCP timeline, the image becomes squeezed.
Does anyone have any suggestions on basically monitoring a custom 4:3 sequence during playback without 16:9 distortion?
    Cheers, hope you're all well
    Sam

Oh, when I'm working in rehearsals its good to be able to update as fast as possible... watch a section of performance, project the images simultaneously, stop say after 30 secs, adjust image, re-render, playback from timeline, stop, adjust image, re-render, etc. Similar to editing with a client in studio, I need the display to show what the final outcome actually is on the fly.
Usually I am working in HD, projecting 16:9 or previously in SD projecting 4:3, but it seems in the crossover with FCP HD codecs there is some conflict trying to playback 4:3 using hi-res codecs (something better than SD PAL def). The included Film Academy setting (2048x1536) plays back without stretching, but this is REALLY hi res and is about double the rendering time. maybe I'll try downrezzing the Film Academy setting...

  • Flash player to fullscreen non widescreen.

I have looked several places and I can't seem to find anyone that can help me with this I want to know how to get Flash Player(on websites) to go completely fullscreen on my 1280x1024 display without it keeping its widescreen values. I want it to fit to the whole screen without it being widescreen and showing black areas on the top and bottom to fill in the extra space. Is there any way to edit some computer settings or flash player settings to do this? I am specifically talking about viewing streams on Twitch.tv, but any flash player based site would also be helpful. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks

This is something that the website (twitch.tv for example) would need to implement, Flash Player does not dictate the video dimensions.
However, unless the widescreen content is zoomed/cropped or the aspect ratio is changed, causing the video to become stretched/squished, there's not much you can do about letter boxing when going from 16:9 to 5:4.

  • All video encoding in widescreen format

I've been using iDVD since it first came available, and for some reason all the video the program encodes does so in the widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio. I've gone though all the setting making sure that NTSC 4:3 is selected, especially when creating a new project, but still all the video that is encoded and burned to a DVD is stretched in the widescreen aspect ratio. No matter what theme I choose new or even the old 4:3 themes, all the video is stretched to widescreen aspect ratios. Even the viewer (when I hit the play button) has a green message that says "Widescreen preview." Any ideas what is happening. I've deleted my preferences and restarted, and created new projects with new source video that is 720 x 480, all the same troubling results.

Hi, I work with David and asked him to give me the DV video he was working with in iDVD, when I ran it thru my copy of iDVD with 4:3 selected in burned the DVD correctly without changing the aspect ratio of the video and everything looked fine.
We will try trashing all of iDVD's pref files and see if that solves the problem. If that won't work we will reinstall the app.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks for your help.

  • Can Pismo do 1366x768 on a widescreen TV?

I am about to get a widescreen TV, one of the many models that does 1366x768.
Currently I have a PowerBook G3 FireWire (Pismo) connected to an old CRT TV via composite video (simple RCA cable), purely for slide shows and web video. Of course, the Pismo can feed it 512x384, 640x480, and 1024x768 over that cable. But when I get the new TV, it will want 1366x768. The Pismo predates widescreen TVs, so does anyone know for certain whether the Pismo will be able to feed the TV that resolution through the Pismo's VGA port? If not natively, can the Pismo do it through SwitchResX?
If not, I'll probably have to wait until I get my MacBook Pro, so that I can move my current PowerBook G4 into the home entertainment center, replacing the Pismo. I assume the PowerBook G4 can do 1366x768 through DVI>HDMI.

    network,
I have little help to offer, but these are the resolutions the Pismo supports:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58344
Below is a thread I archived in 2006 with some helpful information regarding this subject.
    Kenichi Watanabe
The connector in the back is a VGA connector, so you cannot use any displays that are digital only (like Apple's). But VGA analog input LCD displays are plentiful and actually cheaper. You can get displays that are both analog and digital.
I'm not sure about the widescreen format. That format did not exist when Pismo's were designed. I have a 21-inch CRT that is sometimes attached to my Pismo, and I can get it up to 1600x1200. If you get a standard 17-inch or 19-inch (not widescreen) LCD, they are normally 1280x960 (a very common resolution), and that resolution works on the external video port. You can use it as a desktop extension (display spanning) or as the only display.
Hopefully, if the widescreen format works, someone here can confirm it. It would be unfortunate if you paid the extra cost to get one and you had "black bars" along the sides. Maybe you can take your Pismo to CompUSA (or your local mega store) and ask to try it with the on-display model.
    Kenichi Watanabe
The connector in the back is regular VGA. Most VGA monitors come with a cable. If you try one at a store, the monitor you are trying should have a cable. So, I don't think you need to buy one, and it doesn't need to be a "dual" anything, at least for using with a Pismo.
I just checked with my Pismo connected to my 21-inch CRT. If you make the external display the only display, it will go up to 1600x1200 at millions of colors. In fact, it goes up to 1792x1344, but at thousands of colors (but I don't think you'll find any LCDs at that resolution. This is with Mac OS X 10.9.
Looking at some 19-inch (and 17-inch) displays on Amazon, they are at 1280x1024. A 21-inch non-widescreen LCD is at 1600x1200. Now that would be like having a widescreen with some extra top and bottom space.
    Kenichi Watanabe
Yes. I was just using the System Preferences Displays panel. I put the Pismo to sleep and closed the "lid" and woke it up to disable the built-in LCD. This allows the external to be at 1600x1200 and millions of colors. I believe the refresh rate was 75 Hz. It can get to 1600x1200 with monitor spanning (built-in display on), but the external display goes to thousands of colors.
Perhaps under Mac OS 9, 1280 x 1024 is the max. Hope the widescreen works, because all the resolutions listed in that document (except the 640 x 870 portrait mode) are the standard "TV" aspect ratio.
Please post back with your findings.
    Steve Farber
Well, good news and bad news...
Good news is, the monitor is beautiful and glowing brightly. In fact I'm using it to type this right now.
The bad news is, it's hooked up to my wife's G4 iBook. I'm using the mini dvi adapter with the vga cable that came with the monitor.
When I hook up the monitor to the pismo, the pismo's screen becomes a scrambled jumble of lines while the monitor shows the desktop, with the dialogue window frozen with no cursor movement. Desktop icons are absent as well. The only way to get out of this is a restart. If I close the lid, the pismo goes to sleep but won't wake up when the lid is opened, or even when keys are tapped.
Can't find any info on the apple site on what to do here. Any ideas?!
    Steve Farber
    It works!
I re-read you r post Kenichi about putting the pismo to sleep, and pulled up this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58614
and realized I needed to use a usb keyboard. I unearthed our old usb keyboard from our B/W and plugged the dell monitor in as well as the usb -
and the monitor sparng to life!
Aspect ratio is correct - while the screen itself maintains its widescreen form - the text and images are not squeezed (as they were moments ago on the iBook).
    I'm elated.
We have an apple pro bluetooth keyboard which I'll try out tomorrow (as well as the bluetooth dongle) to see if that works just as well, just getting late now and too tired to try it out. Also have to try the RF BenQ laser mouse, because I've got the b/w Puck out and I don't want to go back to that!
For the record, according to System Preferences, the pimso and monitor have set themselves at 1360x768 at millions of colors and 60 hZ refresh rate, I didn't have to do a thing.
    Kenichi Watanabe
That's good news. I looked up that monitor on the 'net, and one review said that the "native" (optimum) resolution for that model was 1680x1050. That makes sense since that's the same resolution for Apple's 20" display.
So try going to the Display preference to see if 1680x1050 is available as an option. Since it can do millions of colors on my big CRT at 1600x1200 (1920000 pixels), I hope it can do millions at 1680x1050 (1764000 pixels).
    Steve Farber
Dell 2007WFP widescreen LCD external display works perfectly at 1680x1050 resolution on a G3 400 pismo with 768 ram, bluetooth keyboard via dongle and rf mouse via rf dongle. Love the future proof pismo!
