645-Ultra Timing Settings (MS-6547)

I just finished building my new PC. I've been exploring and found in the bios timing setting modes. My mode is currently set to normal. When trying to advance the settings to fast, turbo, or ultra the PC won't  boot or post until I clear CMOS.
Any idea why the faster settings won't work?
Also I have installed Fuzzy Logic 4. When trying to manipulate any of the overclock
settings, the system locks and I can't reboot until I unplug the system. Any idea why Fuzzy Logic freezes the sysem?
The system is stable and runs good wiyh no other known issues.

  • Help requested with 645 Ultra-C with a PCI ATA/133 card fitted

I'm new here, so please bear with me if this plea for help is short of info :-
I built my PC 5 years ago, using a 645 Ultra-C board ( MS-6547 2.00 ) and have had no problems since - till now.
I recently installed a PCI ATA/133 card, mainly to be able to add 2 additional hard drives.  It installed ok and the 2 extra drives are recognised correctly on the card's primary channel as is a DVD device on the secondary channel.
However, on initial booting, the card is interrogated to determine what devices are connected to it and then there is a delay of up to 2 minutes ( it feels like forever ) while BootMagic is being searched for/loaded.
It makes no difference if I swap the 2 drives and the dvd over or remove the dvd drive.
The bios ( AMI 07.00T 12/20/01 )  is correctly setup to boot from floppy first, then HDD1 ( connected to the mainboard's primary channel) and 'try other boot devices' is disabled.
I have no wish to boot from the extra drives, so is there any way of avoiding the boot system from looking there first ?   Is there any other bios settings to consider ?
I'd be grateful for any hints/help.
    Thanks.

    Yes,
Go into bios and set boot sequence
Also go into pci controller bios, and set no boot
It's usually CRTL+A or CRTL+M keys on keyboard............
Controller cards will be main boot target, unless told
I have got the boot sequence set correctly - but I can see no sign of a pci controller bios option.  Cntrl A  or Cntrl M  have no effect.  Maybe the 645 bios doesnt offer those options.
I have never updated the bios - being of the 'if it aint broke dont change it' school of thought, so I may need to look at this area, now.
I'll be posting a question here about live update very soon - basically 'is it the best way to update the bios ?'
Thanks for your help so far

  • Ms-645 ultra (MS-6547) CPU:RAM

    Hullo,
I Just Finished building my new system. I am in the process of clocking it out. I used Fuzzy Logic 4 to find out at what speed my system crashes at. Fuzzy crashes any where between 139MHz & 143MHz system clock with CPU core voltage only slightly juiced to 1.5 volts.
This is probably not a good program for the actual overclocking from what I've read, but does serve as a good burn in utility. So I've decided on a 133MHz system clock in bios. Don't want to get too greedy right now as I am using stock H/S and fan. Next did a 5X burn in with Sandra and couldn't crash my system 49c idle 62c load. I must say this is a very nice mobo, extremely stable.
What I am having problems deciding on are my memory timings. This is my first MSI mother board and I'm not really familiar with the normal fast ultra and turbo settings.
Initially I set at the normal selection with CPU - RAM ratio at highest setting of 4:5 and CPU-Z gives me these memory numbers 166MHz & 2.5-3-3-7-11.
Next I tried the ultra setting and the highest ratio of 1:1 any other ratio causes system to lock up. CPU-z gives me these memory numbers 133MHz 2.5-2-2-6-9
It dosen't Appear that the Ultra timing mode offers any advantages over default memory timing settings. Are these words "Ultra" and "turbo" just marketing schemes meant to entice the common PC user, or are there some additional speed settings that go along with with the ultra and turbo modes that I am unaware of. Also after setting system clock to 133MHz My PCI & AGP are left untouched at 33MHz & 66MHz. I was expecting higher speeds. How are these independant? Where can I adjust these to clock along with the system clock. With those AGP & PCI numbers it behaves like a true 533MHz FSB system. I'm a little baffled with this new system. Any explainations would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not displeased, only a little puzzled. in fact i was counting on having to reduce the core & memory speed of my card just a little bit. to allow for a higher oc. Is this a 400/533 mobo manual says 400. Hmmm. I wonder what would happen if I put an 800 FSB cpu in here. bios system clock goes to 200. I happen to have one. this mat be interesting.

  • 645 Ultra (MS-6547) Really Strange Bios Problem

I have just upgraded my pc with a 645 Ultra (MS-6547) mainboard with 128Ram and a Celeron at 1,7GHz. I have a hdd with a Windows 98 on it. The first time I booted after the change, windows starts up, it starts to detect the devices and is asking me to restart. At restart I see the video Bios and after that the mainboard starts beeping from the speaker and the display is showing lots of pages with special caracters and it freezes after a minute or so!!!!
I tried to upgrade the bios but al i got is this message:
    "Phoenix Bios
     D686
     Award Boot Block                                               MS-6547
Chipset/Flash port isn't available. The function will be  invalid."
The really freakiest thing is that with another mainboard (same model) the problem is the same.
At first I thinked that is a boot virus, but I scanned the hdd on another system using f-prot with the latest definitions available(30.01.2003) and is clean.
    Any ideas what could be?
    thanks.

First of all: every one of the two mainboards started fine at the first boot, it loaded windows, started to detect new hardware then it asked me to reboot. After that it was hell! The graphics bios apeared and after that is starting to show something like this " %#^@&$(!#^ " all over the screen, is filling pages with this caracthers and beeping from the speaker. the d-bracket is with the 3 and 4 leds on red and i can't do a thing. the bios flasher (from your site) is telling me:
    "Award Boot Block MS-6547
Chipset/Flash port isn't available. The function will be invalid."
the next thing i did was to try the old components on another pc based on an old i810 board. every one of them worked fine (individually and together). then I use the third board to remake my sistem from scratch with only new components (the old ones I was afraid to use), i instaled win98 on another hdd with drivers for the mobo. Everything was fine. The other hdd i scanned it on another system (winXP) with NAV2003 using the 05/feb/2003 updates and is clean. Then i saved the docs on it, formated it and copied (using pqmagic8 ) the partition from the new hdd with the working win98 on it. Installed the hdd and is ok. The the floppy and is ok. And now I am afraid to put the video card on it!!! I have talked with the service support and they told me to wait until they e-mail me an update program, new bios and instructions to recover my two boards. but that was 2 days ago... and i still got 2 freaked mobos!!!!
I will try tomorrow to recover the bios using the instructions on your site, hope it will work.
I still don't have a clue what the hell happend and what is the cause of this!!!

  • How to VCore mod my 645 ultra (MS-6547)

    HI..
i got 645 ultra (MS-6547) and P4 1,80 @ 2,3GHz.. The problem is, that i can set VCore to max 1,6V, witch gives me.. 1,55V to 1,58V. I would like to set it higher..
    HOW

Unless you really don’t care about frying your components, that procedure sounds like an impressively bad idea. I’ve also heard a rumor that there’s a “wire-wrap” way to unlock the multiplier on the P4s, but the same applies.

  • 645 ultra - Dual Channel Memory?

Following great advice from initial poster to this thread  , I've finally managed an overclock my 645 ULTRA, it's only taken me a year
Full system virus scan, and clean out.
    Clean Boot,
Re-Set Ram CPU ratio down to give 266Mhz.
    Turbo Ram Timing.
    Ram Latency CL2
    Ras/Cas Normal.
Al of which I was backing off, but rightn now seems to hold up
I was able to wind the FSB up to 118Mhz, clocking me at a mear 2.85 Gig  (which for some reason is higher than 118*24)
the good thing here, is when the system did crash at 120, the bias did not re-set! which was happening in the past.
At 120 I got quite a lot of graphical artifacting, but my gcard was running hot since the air temp here is at about 25/26C with sumer approaching (don't help does it!)
Anyway, I'll be ticking off a few more tweaks tonight.
I did notice that this did NOT improve Aquamark, but added 1000 points to 3dMark2001, from taking it from 11500 to 12500. Benchmarks moving more from CPU/GPU to GPU only dependant. Codecreatures is a good bench also

  • 645 Ultra Memory Limitation?

I've had the 645 Ultra board for about 3 years now and I've had no problems running with 756MB of memory, one 512MB double-sided module and one 256MB double-sided module.  I received another 512MB single-sided module for Christmas (from Crucial, using their selector) and I've been unable to use it in my system.  It either reboots spontaneoously or else I receiver an error that says "can't write data 0xXXXXXXXX to location 0xXXXXXXXX can't 'write' the location"  or else it says the same thing except it can't read instead of write.  The memory location changes each time.  I got another 512MB module that is double-sided but I still encounter the same problem but it seems more stable.  I've set the BIOS to manual 100MHz FSB with 3:4 Memory ratio at 266MHz.  I set CAS at 2.5T.  The AGP size is 128MB.  It seems that any amount of memory over 756MB does not work.  Anyone else have a similar problem?  I've read many of the forum issues but none seem like mine.

    1GB Jaz Drive
    CDROM
    CDRW
    SiS IDE driver 2.03.02.00
    SiS AGP driver 7.2.0.1170

    I had same problem...
I had 2 x 256 twinx llpt 3200 from corsair, no problem, running verry aggrssive timings and turbo timing.
added a 512 stick XLPT (faster still) and system would only boot at safe timing setting and cas2.5, with delay1T (2T)
I posted question on asktheramguy, corsairs very own and very responsive specialist, and he put it down to excessive load on the memory controller.
Also if you have different memory manufactures mixed in the slots, that's even worse, and you may not get the system to boot even after relaxing the timings
maybe lower speed 2100's and relaxd timing would be OK, but not much use with todays games
Or set memory timings to safe in bios...
So i bought another 512 3200XLPT stick and am selling the TwinX 2x256 LLPT's.
Well, I'm at 1gig at present 2 x 512 PC3200 XLPT (little over kill but fast).
With mem ratio set correctly and with my overclock this is running at about 380 Mhz (not the rated 400Mhz).
So upshot is, you'll need to get better ram, get a mached pair, and if your not bothered abour raw memory speed get something mid range cas 2.5 say....

  • MSI 645-Ultra problem

Hi, I have some problems with my computer.
    Here is my configuration:

    Motherboard: MSI-6547 645 Ultra
Memory: 512 Mo DDR 266 mhz
video: MSI 8836 GeForces II GTSTi64
I build up this machine in January 2002 by myself and it work fine.  But, this week my computer start to turn off automatically and reboot, after it reboot i can work on it for about 20 min. and then the same thing append.  It even append to me when i was in the BIOS, so for sure its not a windows problem.
I have try another video card and i still have the same problem.
Any help would my appreciate, thanks.

  • Max speed for 645 ultra?

What is the max processor speed for the 645 ultra? The manual says can support from 1.5 to 2.0ghz and up. How high does the "up" go. Would I be able to get the new 3ghz processor when it comes out? Right now I have a 1.6ghz (overclocked to 2.02ghz) and want a higher speed...

  • MS-6547E Ver.1, 654E Max-c, MS6547 Ver.1, 645 Ultra

    I have a Motherboard that had a red sticker on it listing 645E Max-C and MS-6547E Ver.1
I peeled it off and underneath it has 645 Ultra and MS6547 Ver.1
The BIOS lists MS-6547SMS 1.6 in the Startup Screen.
When I run "MSIHQ USB Bootable Tool and BIOS Helper" It lists the Board as 6558 and the BIOS as something totally different from what I've ever seen as a bios.
I figured that I could probably download the MS-6547 1.9 BIOS (The most updated version) and easily Flash the BIOS, but that has not been the case.  Every time I get to AMIFL847 and try to flash it, the message tells me that the new BIOS file is not a BIOS file, and is unknown.  I've downloaded it at least 3 times now (thinking it was a corrupt download) each time is the same result.
I've tried to use Live Update 5 which is supposed to work with this board, and it gives me a message that I have the latest BIOS, or when I point to the BIOS file MS6547.190, it tells me that this is anything BUT a BIOS file.
I even have been getting BSoD (Blue Screens of Death) in which the codes are telling me the problem lies with a MSILiveUpdate5 file dealing with the BIOS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you really need to update BIOS? If you do, don't use LiveUpdate!
There are a few to choose from: http://www.msi.com/service/search/?kw=6547&type=product
You should also be warned, that the motherboard may have been specially built to suit for example Dell or HP, or another major computer system builder. If so you do not use data and BIOS:es from here, but from that manufacturer.
With that warning in mind, this would be the best bet, I believe:

  • Higher Vcore? 645 ultra

Is it possible for MSI to release a BIOS with a higher vcore? I have read on this forum that intel stated the northwoods can handle more than 1.7v. If so why hasnt MSI raised their Vcore from 1.6? I have seen a vast amount of posts from MSI customers asking for a higher Vcore. The only reasons I can think of are that the 645 Ultra cannot handle a higher voltage or MSI isnt getting our requests. To clarify which board I own it is the MSI 6547 Ver. 1 AKA MSI 645 Ultra 333. Thank you for reading and please reply if you have any feedback.

Well you may be at the limit of your cpu, I personally wouldnt go higher than 1.75 volts ( which is really 1.7v because this board undervolts by .05v).  I also think that the chipset can't handle much past  150 mhz not too mention how out of spec the pci and agp bus is (if anyone has taken this chipset significantly higher I'd like to see it).  Also I had a Asus P3V4X (coppermine slot 1 mobo) and it was often suggested to put a heatsink on the clock generator chip (right by the ram slots, stick your finger on it and you'll see what I mean) to get higher fsb overclocking which indeed worked.  Now I havent tried it on this motherboard because I ripped it off said motherboard and put it on my Diamond MX300 sound card (Aureal chip) because it was sputtering at high fsb overclocking (which solved that problem as well).

  • 645 Ultra OR 645EMax?

I have purchased and installed a motherboard from MSI.
Unfortunately it has a problem - it intermittently will not pass beyond the 3rd stage of the LED warnings ( Memory Detection Test ).  I have changed the RAM and it is fine.
I am confused as to its identity, since on the mother board it has various markings:
    645 Ultra
MS- 645EMax  ( however the 645EMax is stuck onto the motherboard.
    N 1996
    D33008
Bar code on right hand side says - 2620023509
    The BIOs rom has the following marks:  AMI BIOS - 686 - 1999 - BK26 - 4537
It also has an orange MSI-DDR chip near the processor and a SiS 961 chip to the south ( PM01014 - 0214IA )
CAN YOU TELL FROM THIS WHAT MY BOARD IS PLEASE.
The only place I can find a reference to a problem with booting is in BIOS Ver. 1.5 of the 545Ultra - where there is a fix for "Fixed after resume from S3, power button cannot work."
I have applied this but it still has problems.  Can you help please??

    Sounds like my board:
    ms-6547 v1.0... 645dx max c
    333 mhz DDR
    133 ATA
I know from previous posts that there is alot of
confusion about the difference between thr
    Ultra and MaxC...the MaxC is a souped-up
ultra and has the same markings except the
    sticker that says Max.

  • 645 Ultra Memory Timings

I use 2 sticks of 256 MB Corsair XMS PC2700 CAS2.  It runs great at 2.5, but XP gives me the big blue screen when I set it to 2.  I've tried this with 'normal' timing and 'ultra' with one and both sticks with the same results.  It will load into 98 at cas2, but won't finish some benchmarks.    By the way, this is with no overclocking.  RAM has heat spreaders and case is well ventilated.  Any ideas?
