648 Max Boot Error

Hope someone can help...
I have just built a computer on the 648Max Motherboard.
My problem is, on first boot, the BIOS detects all hardware ok, but on re-boot, it fails after the MSI splash screen to find them and has a "boot error" on each, then asks for a boot disk in the FDD but this doesn't work either.
The "D Bracket" shows all four lights green.
I have checked all the connections countless times, even taken it back to barebone with no luck. I've checked the Hard Drive in an older computer and boot up fine into Win98.
I have no clue what else to try, the system spec is :-
P4 2.4Ghz
684 Max Motherboard
Xabre 128Mb DDR Ram Graphics
2x512Mb DDR Ram PC2100 Memory
128Gb IBM Deskstar 180GXP HDD
TEAC CD-W54E CDRW
Samsung DVD8E DVD
Windows 98SE
Thanks...

Whipsnade...
Yes, i have tried other IDE cables that i know work fine.
Nope, i wasn't able to install windows, the hard drive was taken out of my older computer with it already installed which was working fine, and still does if i put the hard drive back.
All i have been able to do on the new computer is power up into BIOS, that's it...
The PSU i have is a brand new 350W which came with the case.
The hard drive does spin up yes...
Andy2
Yes, the hard drive is set to master and is in the primary connector on the board, its a working drive from a previous system...
Rob454
I've re-checked and i'm using a couple of older ide cables i know are ok, they actually have printed on them "board", "master and "slave"
Thank you all for your help, but i just don't know what to do with it now...

  • 648 Max Booting problems.

Ok first off hello to all the people here.  I am hoping somone can help me with what is going on here.
Everytime I power on I get the nice first little beep.  This is a blessing since my previous 2 boards would not even post.  After my first little beep it goes on into boot and then beeps one more time followed by a pause and then 2 more beeps.   Then it brings up if I want to go into setup, boot,or network boot.  And then at the bottom it will let you go press F2 to continue into boot mode.  Well after I press F2 it will go into pre windows and give me the option of safe mode or normal.  When I choose safe mode it loads and my usb mouse will not work.  When I choose normal sometimes Windows will boot and sometimes it will not. Most of the time it doesn't.  It just goes into a black screen with a dos like cursor at the top and then the monitor acts like it goes into sleep mode. Everytime it does this I have to go in and short the jumper pin to bring it out of whatever is happening and it then looses all my bios settings. I am running the 648 board, 2.66 P4, 120 gig wd hd, 1024 mb of Geil memory, Ati 9700, Sound Blaster Gamer, Plextor burner, and a Dvd drive.  It has confused the hell out of me.  It seems like I have tried everything to fix this and nothing is working.  Any ideas?  Thanks ahead of time.  ?(

That combination of motherboard and graphics card, (definitely) needs a good power supply. What's yours rated at?
Also, go back through some of the earlier posts. Should be able to find some things relating to the Radeon9700.
Run memtest86 to check RAM for errors.
Sounds like a power supply problem to me though.
Also, that 1G of RAM, is that 1 stick?

  • 648 Max Boot Problems

I'm having boot problems similar to ones I've read in this forum.  Most of the other posts have tied it to their Radeon 9700 video card, but I'm using a Geforce 3.  When I get into Windows, it's stable.  I've run 3dmark, unreal 2003, and others, and I've yet to have a crash.  I'm running Samsung DDR 400 which is running 200x2, CAS 2, and Ultra Timings.  When I reboot from Windows or BIOS, the system will not boot.  I can hear a few things happen (the cd drive will spin up), but no boot or video picture.  At that point, the only way to get it to boot is to flip the power supply on/off switch.  Once I do that, the system will boot.  The BIOS version is 1.3.  My CPU is a P4 2.53 Ghz.  The power supply is 300W, which should be fine.  Having to flip the power supply every time I boot is getting old fast.  If someone could shed some light on these 648Max boot problems (MSI!), that would be wonderful.  Otherwise, looks like I'll be gonna be looking for a new board (any recommendations?)
    Randy
P.S. This isn't my only problem:  SiSoft Sandra is benching my memory at DDR 266 speeds (about 2GB/s) even though I have it at 400, CAS2.  According to that software, DDR 400 should bench closer to 3GB/s.  I can only assume the motherboard is to blame for the poor performance, but I could be wrong.

I worked out the problem so nevermind what I said before.  It was the memory settings.  had to change to 2x178 (356), cas 2.5 and normal timings.  doesn't look like its going to run at 400 ..

  • 648 max, wont boot to cd with locked HDD connected

hi i hope you can help me, i bought my son a cheap second hand PC from a car boot sale, inside which is an MSI 648 max motherboard,
the problem i have is i am trying to attach a larger hard drive which is locked, usually to unlock the HDD i run a bootable cd-rom which is fine however when i try to boot the computer i get a message stating the hard drive is locked and i have 5 attempts to enter the password.
unfortunately i do not know the password as it is encrypted on the cd-rom, if only i could boot to cd-rom this wouldn't be a problem however i can not boot to cd-rom with the locked hard drive connected and obviously i cannot connect the hard drive after its booted to cd as it will not be detected,
when i try to access the boot menu i hit F11 as stated but all i get on the POST screen is "GO-->boot menu and then it hangs on the POST screen, what does this mean?
so my question is, is it possible to boot to CD with the locked HDD connected as im getting quite frustrated,
i hope i have given enough information but if you need anymore i shall happily provide
    many thanks
    Glenn

If the hard drive is still servicable you can use a bootable cd or floppy to erase the contents of the hard drive.
The ultimate boot cd has numerous apps to erase hdds. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
Or just get another hard drive.
Could be something else wrong of course. At least the UBCD is free.

  • 648 Max warm boot issue

I have just built my first PC using a 648 Max MB. and I have a problem.
The system boots up fine from cold start, however it fails to start in the following scenarios, it just beeps once and then sits there with a blank screen.
    # Restart form Windows
    # Shutdown from Windows (system powers off OK)
    # Exit from BIOS with or without saving changes
The reset button has no effect
The only way to get the system to boot is to remove power from supply and then restart.
I note other threads of a similar nature!!!! O Dear

  • 648 max + 9700 boot issues - help

      hi
i have a radeon 9700 (rev 1.3) and the 648 max - L and everything is working fine when i am in windows but sometimes when i cold boot i get no screen and it doesnt sound like i am booting up. i do see some hard drive activity but thats about it.  i try reset and sometimes it will work and others not, also when i install a program that needs to reboot sometimes it wont - basicaly the same problem as cold boot.
i have a enermax 430  and so i doubt it is a psu problem, also like i said when i am in xp i have been able to play 3d games and run 3dmark and have yet to have any crashes.
anyone have any solutions or suggestions as to what the problem is and how to fix it?

Ok MSI called me back finally, I explained situation and told him that i have read other people with 0209 boards have had the same issues.
He is cross shipping me a new 648max-L board I asked about it being backordered because of reading this thread and he said it should be shipped today or tomorrow so maybe they got boards in? Or maybe they modified a board that they are going to send me?
He originally wanted me to send mine back and they would send me out a new one but i told him that i have no place to store the processor for that long of a time and i would be without a computer so he took my credit card number and put a hold of 100 dollars on it, once they receive my old one i will be credited.
So all in all, i will be getting a new mobo and rev 1.3 radeon 9700 pro and i should be ready to go.
Here is an email i received from MSI for those of you that are worried about resolving these issues.
    Dear Paul,
I've just confirmed this with my collegue and he said that the first shipments need to be reworked.  Please send the board over to me directly and I'll take care of it for you.  Please include your address and make sure you get a tracking number for the package.

  • 648 Max no booting (all leds are RED)

    Hello,
I use my 648 Max mother board for 2 year with :
    - P4 @ 2,4 Ghz
    - two PC2700 DDR 512 Mo
    - the D-Bracket 2
    - two hard disk
    - a nvidia g-force 2
    - a lan pci
    - sound blaster live! 5.1
Since yesterday, my computer don't start (whithout hardware change) : All D-Bracket 2 LEDs are red.
Is just a mother board problem or the problem can be provided by an another component (like processor, ram, ...)
    Thank you
    Damien

try clear CMOS. Try your CPU on other motherboard. Try other CPU on your motherboard.

  • 648 max , testing base and extended memory

I dont see the thread i answered to one time that someone spoke of using ddr400 with 648 max or max-L board and they were getting testing base and extended memory error from the LED's.  Well i just got the same error today and my system would not boot i cut the power to the PS. and turned it back on it would start to boot and hang i could barely get to the windows logo sometimes the vid card wouldnt even boot the logo to the screen. This is with an updated mobo that msi sent me that i had just put in , it seemed to run fine at first then this problem started occuring.  The only difference i had in the setup from the previous outdated board was i had the mem in DIMM 3 and not DIMM 1, so i moved the memory back over to DIMM 3 and now the problem is gone. Just something for those of you with the same problem to try.
Oh and i forgot one more issue, i cannot set the dram speed in the bios manually i have ddr 333 it should be 167 mhz so i set it to 4/5  and the system will not boot at all  i end up having to reset cmos.  I called MSI about that and they told me to just have it set to SPD , I said i know that and im fine with leaving it that way but it should let me set it manually if i wanted to and that i wondered if that had anything to do with the random " testing base and extended memory " problem.

    It was probably myt thread...
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/viewindex.php?threadid=6204&boardid=10&styleid=1
Have done some testing with both DDR333 and DDR400 and my results are in the thread.
Right no I'm using my DDR400 as DDR333, manually set to 167MHz, using DIMM1, and havn't seen any problems. I'll try the DIMM3 to see if I get any changes.
And by the way.. I tried setting my DDR400 manually to 200MHz and it wouldn't boot at all. After a lot of ugly language I finally got it back to the BIOS....after a reset of the CMOS.
Seams like you should use SPD if you want to use the correct freq for your RAM.
Have you tested the new 1.3 BIOS?

  • 648 max, Win98 NDIS.vdx driver prob?

Just installed Win98 on my new 648 Max.
It installed ok, but on statup it says error: NDIS problem
(forget the exact wording), you must restart computer.
I bypassed NDIS.vdx with safe mode step by step
start, and removed Dial up Network in control panel,
as seems this is what uses this driver.
It now boots up OK , but of course no dial up network!
I have the onboard LAN disabled.
    Any Ideas

It's probobly the same as this one.

  • 648 max pci/agp optinn

    Dear Sir,
    My system is:
Msi 648 MAX  ver1.1 HT ready
    Intel P4 2.4Ghz 512KB bus 100 Mhz
    Msi MX440SE-T AGP 64MB DDR
    WD 80GB 7200 HDD
    Samsung 52-24-52 CD-RW
    Creative modem blaster v.90 di5655
    P.S. Logic 300W
    Win 98SE & WinXp
    My problem is :
The bios has an option in the frequency/voltage control menu called
    AGP/PCI Frequency (MHz)
which gives me the ability to adjust the pci/agp bus clock frequency.
This option doesn't work, and my clue is
1-  When I adjust my CPU FSB more than 110 MHz (PCI > 36.66 MHZ) and this option to 66/33 the computer boots normally until it starts loading the O.S. and errors saying that the OS cannot start due to lost system files, or Read Write error to Aux device, or it hangs.
2- When I adjust this option to 80/40 and the CPU FSB to Auto (100 MHz), the computer boots normally and load the O.S. normally and everything goes just fine. and Sandra software reports the PCI clock frequency as 33 MHz.
Thats to say that the PCI/CPU FSB ratio is fixed at 1/3 regardless to any value selected in this option.
    2nd problem is
The DMI of this board which report wrong information either by your included DMI program or by any other software like Sandra Software for the following items:
1- Supported memory types: Standard, Fast Page, Edo, Parity, ECC, SiMM         ( supports 184-pin unbuffered DDR DIMM without ECC, manual page 1-2)
    2- Supported memory voltage: 3.3V         (2.5v manual page. 2-5)
3- Number of memory slots: 4 slots         ( There are only 3 slots)
    4- PCI slots: 5                                       ( There are 6 slots)
5- ISA slots: 2                                       (There is no ISA slots on this Board)
                                                            Faithfully,
                                                                    Mar.

You need the SiS USB2.0 driver

  • 648 MAX-L Problems

Imagine that I'm having problems with my 648 MAX-L MOBO.  First let me give you the background story.
I bought a new computer without a OS.  I installed ME and everything was ok except for the game Medal of Honor was choppy.
I saw that there was a BIOS update that helped with the stability of the Radeon 9700 PRO.  So I D/L ver 1.3 and flashed my BIOS.  It went ok.
I then restarted my computer but when it went to load windows it gave me an error.  So I tried to reinstall ME but it wouldn't reinstall, it just gave me an error.
So I reformatted the HD.  Then I tried to install windows and it locked up.  I thought that maybe there was a problem with the BIOS even though it said it was ok.
So I flashed it again with 1.3.  It said that everything was ok but after that line it said something about a DOS MEM problem or something like that.  I restarted the computer and it would boot up.  So then I decided so clear CMOS with the jumper.  I did and the computer would then boot up.
Again I reformatted HD and tried to reinstall windows.  Again it would lock-up.  Usually when it locked up trying to install windows was about the point where it says "Windows will now copy the nessesary files" or whatever it says.  I tried reformatting and installing windows a couple of times with no luck.  I then tried Flashing it down to 1.2 thinking maybe that was the problem.  I think that the version that I had when I got it was 1.0.  No luck.
So then with all the problems people have with the 9700 I thought I would try it with a GeForce 2 card.  Again format and install windows.  This time windows installed.  After you get it installed windows restarts the computer.  When it came back up windows start loading and then errored out.  I restarted computer and it errored out again.
I should also mention that when I start the computer it says CMOS battery is low.  I have only had the computer since Friday.
    Now for my specs.
    P4 2.66 GHZ
MSI 648 MAX-L SIS648 MB W/ ATA 133,8X APG, USB 2.0, LAN.  The box says it was made it October.
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro.  I saw messages that said you could look at the P/N and it would tell you the version of the 9700 you have.  That doesn't work for me because the 2 digits in question are 00.
MAXTOR 60GB 7200 RPM ATA 133 HARD DRIVE

  • What show 2nd termo-controller on a MSI 648 MAX?

    Hi from Russia.
    I have 43 motherboards MSI 648 MAX (HT-ready).
My computers spontaneously freezes. I think, that this problem because of overheating motherboard chipset. Motherboard Monitor showing t80 Celsius on a 2nd termo controller. This is error, or really big temperature of a SiS chipset (t80 on all motherboards)?
And i have other problem in a Counter-Strike.I press ESC when i play in OpenGL mode and i have black screen with freeze (video GF4 Ti4200 AGPx8 )
Maybe anybody know how solve this problems?
    Please sorry for my english.

Did you ever resolve this?  I have a similar problem
Machine has been running with a 512 Mb/333 MHz module in slot 1 for 2 years with no problems.  I want to increase the memory size.  Tried adding all sorts of combinations of other modules, but won't boot.  I went out and purchased a compatible Kingston 1 Gb/333 MHz CAS 2.5, compatible according to Kingston site.  The memory counts to 1 Gb, and everything POST seems to work. I get a beep, and then nothing.  Trying different slots, the same problem.  The 512 Mb works in all slots, but not the 1 Gb.
What is the fix for this MSI memory upgrade issue?
