648 max help

Got this mobo working just fine with an Intel 2.53ghz had xp booted up was online with wireless adapter. I went in the bio to do some last minute tweeks and poof. I took off auto on the cpu freq. Auto had set it to 133mhz so i bumped it up to 140mhz. Rebooted the PC and got nothing but a blank screen. Figure well this is making it unstable since i have a blank screen only way i can think of to rest it was to clear cmos. Turned off the power unpluged the PS and set the jumper to clear data. Returned the jumper to keep data, plugged in the PS, hit the power. PC boots up showing the CPU to be a 1.9ghz now and wont detect the Primary master. Punch del to enter set up go through the PCI to AGP hit f10 save and exit PC reboots and brings up a blank screen. Only way i can get the PC to come up is by clearing the bios. It will boot the bios once after this is done, No matter what is done after the 1st cmos reset it will come up blank screen.  Even if no setting are changed. The RAM 3 sticks of 512MB  from OCsystems PC2700 333mhz DDR. Before I tuned this setting in the bios the system worked fine. With the exception it would hang for a while on the Pri master when booting but would detect it and then boot. Have tryed everything I can think of, tore the system down from scratch and tryed just booting with nothing but the mobo ram and AGP card. Any ideas out there? The mobo gives of  2 beeps when the CMos will load and after it will no longer load it will only give the power on beep. PSU is 400watt.

Have you tried stepping the RAM timings down? I've had terrible trouble getting my Corsair sticks to work in the damn thing and I eventually found that setting the RAm to CL2.5, MA2T and 'normal' timings sorted it out. If any of the settings are "By SPD" or "Auto" (except the frequency, that should be OK), then try changing them to the values above. If that doesn't work try stepping down to 133MHz (DDR266).  Apparently MSI are aware of some serious RAM timing issues that hopefully will be sorted soon.

  • MSI 648 max problems, please help

Just put a new machine together and I am having some problems, hopefully someone can help.
My machine seems to run pretty stable in OS, but dies when any game is played. It will crash anywhere from 2 minutes - 45 minutes in the game. Ive tried several games: C&C generals, unreal2, etc with the same results.
Bios are updated and nothing is overclocked. Win XP is fully updated.

Well my roomate cancelled the memory test after 12 hours, so I dont know those results.
I do know that after removing 1 of the DIMMS, the machine seemed to be stable playing games.
I sure wish MSI would have stated it only accepted 1 double sided DIMM.. especially when the reccomend Kingston ram, which is double sided......
Me and my roomate BOTH bought this motherboard, while my roomate only bought 2 DIMMS of 512, I bought 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now it looks like we need to return these motherboards and get new ones... I HAVENT EVEN GOT MINE OUT THE BOX!!!!!!!!
Any reccomendations on an MSI motherboard (or any) that support  double sided DIMMS? I am looking for 3 slots...
    thanks...
Any other advise on how to get this motherboard to work with all this ram would help too, so we dont have to RMA through newegg....

  • Help for SIS 648 MAX-L Startup Problem

I just bought an MSI-648MAX-L, a 2.4GHz cpu and a Jaton GeForce4 TI4200 card. Installed all of the above + PC2700 512 MB RAM and a WD 80GB hard drive, floppy and CD. Turn on the power and my screen flickers all four of the diagnostic leds light up green and then nothing. I hear the hard drive spinning and the CPU fan and video card fan but nothing else. Tried one other AGP video card and a PCI video card but nothing on the screen. Seems like the BIOS is not loading. So I turn the computer off and set the BIOS reset jumper. Turn it back on again and still nothing. Checked all the connections, the seating of the CPU and tried again, still nothing. Any idea what might be wrong?? I hope I don't have to buy another MotherBoard and also I hate the idea of removing my CPU once installed. ;(
    Thanks for your help..
    Kumar.

What kind of video card is it?
If it's a radeon 9700 pro, look in one of the other threads  on this site to figure out what revision you have, rev 1.1 or 1.2 9700 pros will not work on some 648 max boards ( well for me it was 648 max L im not sure about the 648 max but im assuming it has the same problem.
What happens with radeon is since the mobo sets the agp automatically, and there is the 8x bug the system doesnt boot. But the card will work fine on machines that have 4x, In this case RMA the card to radeon and make sure to specifiy that you get a 1.3 rev.
Otherwise you stated you have tried other processors and memory that were "known" to be good.
DDR 400 or DDR 333 memory?

  • MSI-6585 (648 MAX) instant restart issues questions pls help......

Hi, i figured after months of specualation i would try to figure out what the hell is wrong with my pc.  12months ago a bought a MS-6585 648 MAX mobo and a P4 2.53ghz with 2x Samsung DDR 333 (PC2700) ram.  I play many games on my pc it seems when playing Counter-Strike + PlanetSide results in random instant restarts.  Occasionaly it will just hang the system but mainly instant reset of the system.  My cpu temp ranges from 35 48 max approx.
I've tried switching my ram to different slots and so on refit everything but with no luck.  I just have a very unreliable computer atm.  I've reformated plenty of times but with no joy, the odd thing is its random somtimes my pc will not crash or reset it self so this makes it very difficult to figure out what the hell is going on :S
If you have more questions perhaps i can answer them - and give you more info that i have forgotten.
Here are somethings that might be useful:
    MS-6585 648 MAX mobo
    Pentium 4 (northwood) 2,53ghz 533
    Samsung DDR 333 (PC2700)
Gigabyte Maya II Radeon 9700Pro (running in agp 8x)
    Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
    Bios settings: (things ive changed)
Turned onboard sound off than auto
    AGP Apeture size  128
I have 32bit transfer mode running for hdds
    I have S.M.A.R.T. enabled
(next week end i will have another 512 ram stick to try just incase its my ram but i have done the intel ram checker and it didn't find any problems)
Any help would be greatly appreciated pls ask any things ive missed and anything else u would need to know.  I really want to sort this out as you can imagine its not very nice having a pc that can randomly crash when u do not expect it.

Overclocking is typically limited by one of 3 factors, assuming you have sufficient power:
    1. Memory won't operate past a certain speed, so you run at a different ratio or buy faster memory.
    2. Temperature, so you need to add non-stock cooling or better case ventilation or water cooling, depending on how far you want to go
    3. CPU - At some point the CPU won't run any faster.
Leave the CPU voltage at Auto. You should only need to raise it if you get into extreme overclocking.
As for the size of the power supply, if you stay with Intel Northwood with an ATX board on your next upgrade, an Enermax 465, Antec 480, or something similar (should cost around $80-100US) would get good choices. If you plan on going with a Prescott on an ATX board, I would look at going to a 550W supply.
Personally, I thing the next 12 months is shaping up to be a real headache in making upgrade decisions in the Intel world. Intel have indicated their next generation of boards will be BTX without AGP support. This looks like an upgrade could mean new case, possibly power supply, video card and possibly ram. I am hoping that companies like MSI will produce a transitional product that allows new processors and chip sets on an atx board. If that doesn't happen I see a lot of people switching to AMD.

Have some suggestions on what to do, but I'm not sure it will help. If enyone else has something feel free..
It's seams like you have had the PC up and running, and that's good.
Regarding the diagnostic led's I can only suggest that you double check the connection to the board. (They all should either be green or red when booting).
Even though it's hot hardware, loading the optimal fast setting is not the same as getting the best settings for your system.
Regarding DDR400 and 648Max they didn't officially support it when they released the board, but they now do. I would suggest you check your version of the board. (I have ver 1.0 produced sept. 02, and my DDR400 has to be run as DDR333 to function properly).
You don't say anything about your psu, but it should be above 200W combined.

  • Help. 648 Max-L, AGP, Memory, and instability

    Everyone -
I just built my first computer and I need help here.  This is what I got:
    MSI 648 Max-L MB
    Corsair 1x512 MB DDR333 (slot 1)
SapphireTech ATI 9500 Pro 128 MB (64MB AAP)
    P4 2.4 ghz
This all started when I installed the OS then tried to play battlefield 1942.  the game would load fine and 5 minutes in the game would crash to the desktop without any errors.  I realized I never installed the MB Sis AGP drivers.  I did so and updated the drivers from ATI (when the card is from Sapphire), and errors galore started to surfaces.
I re-installed the OS and the MB drivers.  I then installed the AGP drivers from the SapphireCD.  I installed the Sis AGP Driver from MSI.  I am getting constant errors trying to open windows on the desktop.  Everything from folders, msie, notepad, etc.  My Event viewer shows errors like "a thread could not be created for this service".
I also noticed dxdiag showed Texture Acceleration as "Not Available".  How is that?
I am at a lost here guys.  Is my video card bad? is it my memory?

    Everything is working.
THe fix was to turn OFF fast writes AND uninstall the AGP MB drivers.  No idea why this is...
I have the ATI card drivers, I just do not have the MoBo AGP drivers.  I also put in Directx 9.
    you gotta check this out...

  • 648 max + 9700 boot issues - help

      hi
i have a radeon 9700 (rev 1.3) and the 648 max - L and everything is working fine when i am in windows but sometimes when i cold boot i get no screen and it doesnt sound like i am booting up. i do see some hard drive activity but thats about it.  i try reset and sometimes it will work and others not, also when i install a program that needs to reboot sometimes it wont - basicaly the same problem as cold boot.
i have a enermax 430  and so i doubt it is a psu problem, also like i said when i am in xp i have been able to play 3d games and run 3dmark and have yet to have any crashes.
anyone have any solutions or suggestions as to what the problem is and how to fix it?

Ok MSI called me back finally, I explained situation and told him that i have read other people with 0209 boards have had the same issues.
He is cross shipping me a new 648max-L board I asked about it being backordered because of reading this thread and he said it should be shipped today or tomorrow so maybe they got boards in? Or maybe they modified a board that they are going to send me?
He originally wanted me to send mine back and they would send me out a new one but i told him that i have no place to store the processor for that long of a time and i would be without a computer so he took my credit card number and put a hold of 100 dollars on it, once they receive my old one i will be credited.
So all in all, i will be getting a new mobo and rev 1.3 radeon 9700 pro and i should be ready to go.
Here is an email i received from MSI for those of you that are worried about resolving these issues.
    Dear Paul,
I've just confirmed this with my collegue and he said that the first shipments need to be reworked.  Please send the board over to me directly and I'll take care of it for you.  Please include your address and make sure you get a tracking number for the package.

  • MSI FX5900 Ultra 256 MB and MSI 648 MAX

I have just installed my new FX5900 Ultra graphics card and when ever the card runs any 3D application for more than a couple of minutes, my PC will instantly shut down. The only way I can get it back up, is to remove my power cable from the PSU and wait about 20 seconds and then the PC will boot again.
I have checked the temperature of the card before and after the shutdown; and the latest Nvidia reference drivers show a GPU core temperature of 37 C. In addition, if I put my original GeForce 3 back into my computer, I experience no problems.
Looking on the internet, I have come across other people who have had a similar problem and this was resolved by changing the AGP slot to run at 4x rather than 8x. I have gone through the 648 Max BIOS and am unable to find anywhere where I can step down to 4x AGP.
Any Help Will Be Greatly Received.
    Regards,
    Macross

Thanks for your help guys. Whilst I have not been able to pick up my new powersupply, I have removed the Q-Tec 400W and put my old 300W PSU back, and guess what?? My PC has not shutdown since.
This power supply lark is totally new to me, and it does seem that a good quality 300W PSU can be better than a average 400W. I have never looked at the 3.3, +5 and +12 before, just the total wattage. Well, you do live and learn. Though it would have been nice if MSI put information like this in the manual of the card, or the WEB FAQ's.
I shall pick up my new 520W PSU on Saturday. Then I can put this new 5900 Ultra through its paces!!
    Thanks
    Macross.

  • MSI 648 Max - Display Problems

I recently bought the MSI 648 Max motherboard, as my system needed an upgrade quite badly.  To cut the costs down a bit, I’ve used some parts from my previous system (eg the video card which is an 2x AGP, 64 Mb, Kyro based card) but got new RAM, CPU and psu.
I put together the system (described below), loaded Windows ME, updated all drivers with latest releases, and the thing works but the quality of the display is really bad    ;( .  That is, I get lots of video artefacts (shadows, fading text, vertical lines, distorted colours, etc).  The video card was working fine on my other machine.  Also, Sisoft Sandra says that the card is operating at 2x AGP, as it should.
I am not overclocking; some of the BIOS parameters I used are as follows (based on the OPTIMAL DEFAULTS):
    AGP Aperture Size                     128 Mb
    DRAM CAS Latency                      by SPD
    Timing Setting Mode                      NORMAL
    MA 1T/2T Select                      AUTO
    Primary Graphics Adapter      AGP
Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA      NO
    CPU/DRAM Frequency Ratio      by SPD
DRAM Frequency                      167 MHz (for now)
    CPU Frequency                      133 MHz
    AGP/PCI Frequency                      66/33
    DRAM Vcore          2.6 V
    CPU Vcore         AUTO
The system temperature showed in the Health Status is less than 40 C (104 F).
I have tried the latest AMI BIOS (version 1.3), and then reverted to version 1.0, but I still have the same display problem.
I would really appreciate some help.

  • MSI 648 MAX + 3Gb Memory

    Hi,
I have put three GB of RAM in a PC containing a MSI 648 Max motherboard.
The memory is 3 * PC2100 1GB of Samsung 266 DDR RAM.  I've ran memtest
(http://www.memtest86.com) to test the chips to test the chips individually
and in blocks of two.  The machine runs fine with up to 2GB, but fails
    when all three are in.
I have two identical machines (and two sets of 3GB RAM), which exhibit the

  • MSI 648 Max and ipods? Prob's connecting.

    Please can anyone help?
I have a MSI 648 Max board with on-board usb2 and have problems connecting to my 4G 20Gb iPod. I'm pretty sure it’s the USB connection that is the problem. Has anyone else had this? Can anyone suggest anything to help? This is my last port of call before I’ll have to folk out for a Firewire card which I really don’t want to do.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for replying  .
I have used USB for a number of devices (Printed/Mouse/DigiCam) and have never had any noticeable problems. I’ve tried the disconnecting thing and it didn’t seem to have any effect.
I thought it might be something to do with iPod’s not liking on-board USB and decided to post a topic here to see if anyone else has had a similar problem. Doesn’t seem to be much talk of iPod’s though. I wondered if MSI knew of any problems.
I have been around a few iPod forums but not many people seem to be using on-board USB.
Keep the suggestions coming though. Thanks.
