648 MAX (MS6585) : memory problem

Hello,
On my MSI 648MAX mainboard,
I try to place three memory modules (PC2700 512Mb DDR/CL2.5   TwinMos)
With two modules (1Gb RAM), windows 2000 server doesn't crash.
With the third (1.5 Gb RAM), windows 2000 server always crashes.
I tried the modules one by one and I don't have any problems.
But with the three modules, windows craches uncertain way.
What can I do ?
Config :
Pentium 4 2.4GHZ (on MSI 648MAX (MS-6585))
1,5 GB ram (PC2700 512Mb DDR/CL2.5   TwinMos)
2 Hard disk : IBM 40Gb Ultra ATA 100
ATI Radeon 7000 32Mb
Network card : 3com
Win2000 Server SP3
All drivers are updated
Thanks
Greg

Greg, did you ever resolve this?  I have a similar problem
Machine has been running with a 512 Mb/333 MHz module in slot 1 for 2 years with no problems.  I want to increase the memory size.  Tried adding all sorts of combinations of other modules, but won't boot.  I went out and purchased a compatible Kingston 1 Gb/333 MHz CAS 2.5, compatible according to Kingston site.  The memory counts to 1 Gb, and everything POST seems to work. I get a beep, and then nothing.  Trying different slots, the same problem.  The 512 Mb works in all slots, but not the 1 Gb.
What is the fix for this MSI memory upgrade issue?

  • MSI 648 MAX + 3Gb Memory

    Hi,
I have put three GB of RAM in a PC containing a MSI 648 Max motherboard.
The memory is 3 * PC2100 1GB of Samsung 266 DDR RAM.  I've ran memtest
(http://www.memtest86.com) to test the chips to test the chips individually
and in blocks of two.  The machine runs fine with up to 2GB, but fails
    when all three are in.
I have two identical machines (and two sets of 3GB RAM), which exhibit the
same problem, memtest failing at the same time.
The machines run P4 2.4Ghz processors.
    Can you help?
    Thanks in advance

  • Help for SIS 648 MAX-L Startup Problem

I just bought an MSI-648MAX-L, a 2.4GHz cpu and a Jaton GeForce4 TI4200 card. Installed all of the above + PC2700 512 MB RAM and a WD 80GB hard drive, floppy and CD. Turn on the power and my screen flickers all four of the diagnostic leds light up green and then nothing. I hear the hard drive spinning and the CPU fan and video card fan but nothing else. Tried one other AGP video card and a PCI video card but nothing on the screen. Seems like the BIOS is not loading. So I turn the computer off and set the BIOS reset jumper. Turn it back on again and still nothing. Checked all the connections, the seating of the CPU and tried again, still nothing. Any idea what might be wrong?? I hope I don't have to buy another MotherBoard and also I hate the idea of removing my CPU once installed. ;(
    Thanks for your help..
    Kumar.

What kind of video card is it?
If it's a radeon 9700 pro, look in one of the other threads  on this site to figure out what revision you have, rev 1.1 or 1.2 9700 pros will not work on some 648 max boards ( well for me it was 648 max L im not sure about the 648 max but im assuming it has the same problem.
What happens with radeon is since the mobo sets the agp automatically, and there is the 8x bug the system doesnt boot. But the card will work fine on machines that have 4x, In this case RMA the card to radeon and make sure to specifiy that you get a 1.3 rev.
Otherwise you stated you have tried other processors and memory that were "known" to be good.
DDR 400 or DDR 333 memory?

  • SiS 648 Max and Memory, still having pb

OK, I still can't use 3x512Mo of Corsair DDR 400 Mhz! I've tried all kind of settings in the bios, all kind os speed of ratio, it's always the same, it works perfectly with only one memory chip !
So my question is: what memory should I use to be sure that 2 or 3 chips will be OK ?
What if I use 3 x 512 Mo of  SEC K4H560838C-TCB3  PC2700 DDR Ram ? They say it has been tested ... am I guarantee that will work normally ??
Did some of you have 1 Go or 1.5 Go of DDR something with this mother board, without any problem for configuration ??
    Please, tell me !!
    Thanks

What kind of bios setting would you guys suggest  ??
I've found that with this board, if you change the memory you may have to change the BIOS settings. Try setting the Timings to Normal. After that, try manually setting the CAS# Latency.  Try it at 2 and 2.5. At each CAS# setting, also try changing the MA Select setting. The easiest way is to get memtest86 and run it after changing each setting. If you change a setting and it won't post, reset the cmos. If you get it working, then try setting the timings faster.
Edited:BTW I guess I should ask. On your first post, when you say it wont boot. Can you still get into the BIOS?

  • 648 Max "A" drive problems

I'm in the process of building my first computer from ground up. And when i go to boot the system up the coputer is looking for the disk to boot from. Consequently the A-drive is constantly running. I replace the drive twice same reults. I replaced the cables twice the same result. The drive looks like it is constantly running. When I leave the power cable connected and remove the data cable from the motherboard socket the drive is off. Any ideas how to resolve this?

You are the master computer genius. I relooked athe the drive and it looks like the mufacturer put the connecter in the drive but the nothch for the cable to slide in as a guide was not cut out. the notch was cut out on top but not the bottom. When i cut the notch out on the bottom of the connecter and slid the cable in the drive worked normal. Thanks again for the help.

  • 648 max, wont boot to cd with locked HDD connected

hi i hope you can help me, i bought my son a cheap second hand PC from a car boot sale, inside which is an MSI 648 max motherboard,
the problem i have is i am trying to attach a larger hard drive which is locked, usually to unlock the HDD i run a bootable cd-rom which is fine however when i try to boot the computer i get a message stating the hard drive is locked and i have 5 attempts to enter the password.
unfortunately i do not know the password as it is encrypted on the cd-rom, if only i could boot to cd-rom this wouldn't be a problem however i can not boot to cd-rom with the locked hard drive connected and obviously i cannot connect the hard drive after its booted to cd as it will not be detected,
when i try to access the boot menu i hit F11 as stated but all i get on the POST screen is "GO-->boot menu and then it hangs on the POST screen, what does this mean?
so my question is, is it possible to boot to CD with the locked HDD connected as im getting quite frustrated,
i hope i have given enough information but if you need anymore i shall happily provide
    many thanks
    Glenn

If the hard drive is still servicable you can use a bootable cd or floppy to erase the contents of the hard drive.
The ultimate boot cd has numerous apps to erase hdds. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
Or just get another hard drive.
Could be something else wrong of course. At least the UBCD is free.

  • NEED AN EXPERT MSI 648 Max

Need advice. Present computer specs: P4 2.4GHZ 533 FB, Samsung 2700DDR 512, Radeon 9700 Pro, MSI 648 Max Board . Problem Im having is after booting up puter, after about 3 min. cursor arrow changes into a 1 " square. Then screen goes black and puter freezes up. Ive checked out the processor, video card, in another computer. No problems incountered. Do I have a Bad board???

There is a compatibility issue between 648 Max and Radeon 9X00. There are many threads about this issue in this forum. Have you tried updating your BIOS because it should solve some issues?

  • 648 max , testing base and extended memory

I dont see the thread i answered to one time that someone spoke of using ddr400 with 648 max or max-L board and they were getting testing base and extended memory error from the LED's.  Well i just got the same error today and my system would not boot i cut the power to the PS. and turned it back on it would start to boot and hang i could barely get to the windows logo sometimes the vid card wouldnt even boot the logo to the screen. This is with an updated mobo that msi sent me that i had just put in , it seemed to run fine at first then this problem started occuring.  The only difference i had in the setup from the previous outdated board was i had the mem in DIMM 3 and not DIMM 1, so i moved the memory back over to DIMM 3 and now the problem is gone. Just something for those of you with the same problem to try.
Oh and i forgot one more issue, i cannot set the dram speed in the bios manually i have ddr 333 it should be 167 mhz so i set it to 4/5  and the system will not boot at all  i end up having to reset cmos.  I called MSI about that and they told me to just have it set to SPD , I said i know that and im fine with leaving it that way but it should let me set it manually if i wanted to and that i wondered if that had anything to do with the random " testing base and extended memory " problem.

    It was probably myt thread...
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/viewindex.php?threadid=6204&boardid=10&styleid=1
Have done some testing with both DDR333 and DDR400 and my results are in the thread.
Right no I'm using my DDR400 as DDR333, manually set to 167MHz, using DIMM1, and havn't seen any problems. I'll try the DIMM3 to see if I get any changes.
And by the way.. I tried setting my DDR400 manually to 200MHz and it wouldn't boot at all. After a lot of ugly language I finally got it back to the BIOS....after a reset of the CMOS.
Seams like you should use SPD if you want to use the correct freq for your RAM.
Have you tested the new 1.3 BIOS?

  • SiS 648 MAX problem!

    Hello!
I have a very annoying problem with my MSI 648 MAX board.
The computer freezes and reboots when i put in another DIMM in it.
I have two identical TwinMos 256mb PC3200 DDR modules.
They both work fine when they arent used together.
When i put in the other one, the sympthoms i described above happen.
I have formatted c: and tryed with both WinXP and Win2000.
I'm using the latest SiS AGP & IDE drivers.
Nothing in the system is overclocked.
I have upgraded with the latest bios.
    Other system speccs:
    P4 2.0 (400mhz).
    ASUS GF4 Ti4200.
    80gb Seagate.
    350W "Noname" Powersupply.
Is this a known problem and will I just have to face the fact that this won't work? :(

    It's a JNC Power Supply 350W.
    The amps are:
    +3.3V = 24A
    +5V = 35A
    +12V = 12A
    -12V = 0.8A
    -5V = 0.5A
It has worked fine with this board before and with another board (Abit th7 II raid).
The problem itself is getting worse, windows freezes with just 1 memory-stick now :(
Formatted once again and tried WinXP and Win2k without any success..
The Memory / GFX works fine in another computer.

Well my roomate cancelled the memory test after 12 hours, so I dont know those results.
I do know that after removing 1 of the DIMMS, the machine seemed to be stable playing games.
I sure wish MSI would have stated it only accepted 1 double sided DIMM.. especially when the reccomend Kingston ram, which is double sided......
Me and my roomate BOTH bought this motherboard, while my roomate only bought 2 DIMMS of 512, I bought 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So now it looks like we need to return these motherboards and get new ones... I HAVENT EVEN GOT MINE OUT THE BOX!!!!!!!!
Any reccomendations on an MSI motherboard (or any) that support  double sided DIMMS? I am looking for 3 slots...
    thanks...
Any other advise on how to get this motherboard to work with all this ram would help too, so we dont have to RMA through newegg....
Anyone from MSI read this board?????

  • 648 MAX-L Problems

Imagine that I'm having problems with my 648 MAX-L MOBO.  First let me give you the background story.
I bought a new computer without a OS.  I installed ME and everything was ok except for the game Medal of Honor was choppy.
I saw that there was a BIOS update that helped with the stability of the Radeon 9700 PRO.  So I D/L ver 1.3 and flashed my BIOS.  It went ok.
I then restarted my computer but when it went to load windows it gave me an error.  So I tried to reinstall ME but it wouldn't reinstall, it just gave me an error.
So I reformatted the HD.  Then I tried to install windows and it locked up.  I thought that maybe there was a problem with the BIOS even though it said it was ok.
So I flashed it again with 1.3.  It said that everything was ok but after that line it said something about a DOS MEM problem or something like that.  I restarted the computer and it would boot up.  So then I decided so clear CMOS with the jumper.  I did and the computer would then boot up.
Again I reformatted HD and tried to reinstall windows.  Again it would lock-up.  Usually when it locked up trying to install windows was about the point where it says "Windows will now copy the nessesary files" or whatever it says.  I tried reformatting and installing windows a couple of times with no luck.  I then tried Flashing it down to 1.2 thinking maybe that was the problem.  I think that the version that I had when I got it was 1.0.  No luck.
So then with all the problems people have with the 9700 I thought I would try it with a GeForce 2 card.  Again format and install windows.  This time windows installed.  After you get it installed windows restarts the computer.  When it came back up windows start loading and then errored out.  I restarted computer and it errored out again.
I should also mention that when I start the computer it says CMOS battery is low.  I have only had the computer since Friday.
    Now for my specs.
    P4 2.66 GHZ
MSI 648 MAX-L SIS648 MB W/ ATA 133,8X APG, USB 2.0, LAN.  The box says it was made it October.
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro.  I saw messages that said you could look at the P/N and it would tell you the version of the 9700 you have.  That doesn't work for me because the 2 digits in question are 00.
MAXTOR 60GB 7200 RPM ATA 133 HARD DRIVE
    512 MB PC400 PC3200 DDR MEMORY 1 stick

    MITSUMI 1.44 MB FLOPPY DR

So does anybody have any idea what is going on?  Why can't I install windows with out problems?
Sorry this is so long but I wanted to make sure that I could give you guys as much info as possible.  Thanks.

  • MSI 648 Max - Display Problems

I recently bought the MSI 648 Max motherboard, as my system needed an upgrade quite badly.  To cut the costs down a bit, I’ve used some parts from my previous system (eg the video card which is an 2x AGP, 64 Mb, Kyro based card) but got new RAM, CPU and psu.
I put together the system (described below), loaded Windows ME, updated all drivers with latest releases, and the thing works but the quality of the display is really bad    ;( .  That is, I get lots of video artefacts (shadows, fading text, vertical lines, distorted colours, etc).  The video card was working fine on my other machine.  Also, Sisoft Sandra says that the card is operating at 2x AGP, as it should.
I am not overclocking; some of the BIOS parameters I used are as follows (based on the OPTIMAL DEFAULTS):
    AGP Aperture Size                     128 Mb
    DRAM CAS Latency                      by SPD
    Timing Setting Mode                      NORMAL
    MA 1T/2T Select                      AUTO
    Primary Graphics Adapter      AGP
Allocate IRQ to PCI VGA      NO
    CPU/DRAM Frequency Ratio      by SPD
DRAM Frequency                      167 MHz (for now)
    CPU Frequency                      133 MHz
    AGP/PCI Frequency                      66/33
    DRAM Vcore          2.6 V
    CPU Vcore         AUTO
The system temperature showed in the Health Status is less than 40 C (104 F).
I have tried the latest AMI BIOS (version 1.3), and then reverted to version 1.0, but I still have the same display problem.
I would really appreciate some help.

  • Problems with MSI 648 Max

I have problems with my sons MSI 648 Max Mainboard, everything seems to be alhright, but when I upgraded the BIOS version to the lastest. the computer starts to hang. I have also but a new harddisk in to the computer an some more RAM. I think the problem begin in the powersupply, its just a 250 W powersupply to the computer, and we have av 1.8 GHz Celeron. Have anything had this problem, or is it something I should think about after the upgrade of the BIOS?.

I know that 250 watt is to small, but the computer have function great in 2 months. But after i have taking out the old harddisk and but in a new bigger one, and placed some more RAM (256). After that I installed Windows XP on the new harddisk, but after that I upgraded my BIOS version to 1.4. After the upgrade of the BIOS the computer starts to freeze after a while. I tried to reinstall XP but the computer freeze under the installation. I have tried to switch back to older BIOS version, but I cant make it work. I have really hard to believe that the powersupply is the reason why the compter freeze.
