648 Max warm boot issue

I have just built my first PC using a 648 Max MB. and I have a problem.
The system boots up fine from cold start, however it fails to start in the following scenarios, it just beeps once and then sits there with a blank screen.
# Restart form Windows
# Shutdown from Windows (system powers off OK)
# Exit from BIOS with or without saving changes
The reset button has no effect
The only way to get the system to boot is to remove power from supply and then restart.
I note other threads of a similar nature!!!! O Dear
System loaded with:
Windows XP Professional
2 x Kingston 256 DDR400 PC3200
Intel P4 1.6GHz
CONNECT 3D ATI RADEON 9200 128MB DDR + DVI + TV
40GB Maxtor IDE

Check the Power Management setp in your mobo's BIOS.

  • 648 max + 9700 boot issues - help

      hi
i have a radeon 9700 (rev 1.3) and the 648 max - L and everything is working fine when i am in windows but sometimes when i cold boot i get no screen and it doesnt sound like i am booting up. i do see some hard drive activity but thats about it.  i try reset and sometimes it will work and others not, also when i install a program that needs to reboot sometimes it wont - basicaly the same problem as cold boot.
i have a enermax 430  and so i doubt it is a psu problem, also like i said when i am in xp i have been able to play 3d games and run 3dmark and have yet to have any crashes.
anyone have any solutions or suggestions as to what the problem is and how to fix it?

Ok MSI called me back finally, I explained situation and told him that i have read other people with 0209 boards have had the same issues.
He is cross shipping me a new 648max-L board I asked about it being backordered because of reading this thread and he said it should be shipped today or tomorrow so maybe they got boards in? Or maybe they modified a board that they are going to send me?
He originally wanted me to send mine back and they would send me out a new one but i told him that i have no place to store the processor for that long of a time and i would be without a computer so he took my credit card number and put a hold of 100 dollars on it, once they receive my old one i will be credited.
So all in all, i will be getting a new mobo and rev 1.3 radeon 9700 pro and i should be ready to go.
Here is an email i received from MSI for those of you that are worried about resolving these issues.
    Dear Paul,
I've just confirmed this with my collegue and he said that the first shipments need to be reworked.  Please send the board over to me directly and I'll take care of it for you.  Please include your address and make sure you get a tracking number for the package.

  • 648 max, wont boot to cd with locked HDD connected

hi i hope you can help me, i bought my son a cheap second hand PC from a car boot sale, inside which is an MSI 648 max motherboard,
the problem i have is i am trying to attach a larger hard drive which is locked, usually to unlock the HDD i run a bootable cd-rom which is fine however when i try to boot the computer i get a message stating the hard drive is locked and i have 5 attempts to enter the password.
unfortunately i do not know the password as it is encrypted on the cd-rom, if only i could boot to cd-rom this wouldn't be a problem however i can not boot to cd-rom with the locked hard drive connected and obviously i cannot connect the hard drive after its booted to cd as it will not be detected,
when i try to access the boot menu i hit F11 as stated but all i get on the POST screen is "GO-->boot menu and then it hangs on the POST screen, what does this mean?
so my question is, is it possible to boot to CD with the locked HDD connected as im getting quite frustrated,
i hope i have given enough information but if you need anymore i shall happily provide
    many thanks
    Glenn

If the hard drive is still servicable you can use a bootable cd or floppy to erase the contents of the hard drive.
The ultimate boot cd has numerous apps to erase hdds. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
Or just get another hard drive.
Could be something else wrong of course. At least the UBCD is free.

  • 648 Max no booting (all leds are RED)

    Hello,
I use my 648 Max mother board for 2 year with :
    - P4 @ 2,4 Ghz
    - two PC2700 DDR 512 Mo
    - the D-Bracket 2
    - two hard disk
    - a nvidia g-force 2
    - a lan pci
    - sound blaster live! 5.1
Since yesterday, my computer don't start (whithout hardware change) : All D-Bracket 2 LEDs are red.
Is just a mother board problem or the problem can be provided by an another component (like processor, ram, ...)
    Thank you
    Damien

try clear CMOS. Try your CPU on other motherboard. Try other CPU on your motherboard.

  • MSI-6585 (648 MAX) instant restart issues questions pls help......

Hi, i figured after months of specualation i would try to figure out what the hell is wrong with my pc.  12months ago a bought a MS-6585 648 MAX mobo and a P4 2.53ghz with 2x Samsung DDR 333 (PC2700) ram.  I play many games on my pc it seems when playing Counter-Strike + PlanetSide results in random instant restarts.  Occasionaly it will just hang the system but mainly instant reset of the system.  My cpu temp ranges from 35 48 max approx.
I've tried switching my ram to different slots and so on refit everything but with no luck.  I just have a very unreliable computer atm.  I've reformated plenty of times but with no joy, the odd thing is its random somtimes my pc will not crash or reset it self so this makes it very difficult to figure out what the hell is going on :S
If you have more questions perhaps i can answer them - and give you more info that i have forgotten.
Here are somethings that might be useful:
    MS-6585 648 MAX mobo
    Pentium 4 (northwood) 2,53ghz 533
    Samsung DDR 333 (PC2700)
Gigabyte Maya II Radeon 9700Pro (running in agp 8x)
    Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
    Bios settings: (things ive changed)
Turned onboard sound off than auto
    AGP Apeture size  128
I have 32bit transfer mode running for hdds
    I have S.M.A.R.T. enabled
(next week end i will have another 512 ram stick to try just incase its my ram but i have done the intel ram checker and it didn't find any problems)
Any help would be greatly appreciated pls ask any things ive missed and anything else u would need to know.  I really want to sort this out as you can imagine its not very nice having a pc that can randomly crash when u do not expect it.

Overclocking is typically limited by one of 3 factors, assuming you have sufficient power:
    1. Memory won't operate past a certain speed, so you run at a different ratio or buy faster memory.
    2. Temperature, so you need to add non-stock cooling or better case ventilation or water cooling, depending on how far you want to go
    3. CPU - At some point the CPU won't run any faster.
Leave the CPU voltage at Auto. You should only need to raise it if you get into extreme overclocking.
As for the size of the power supply, if you stay with Intel Northwood with an ATX board on your next upgrade, an Enermax 465, Antec 480, or something similar (should cost around $80-100US) would get good choices. If you plan on going with a Prescott on an ATX board, I would look at going to a 550W supply.
Personally, I thing the next 12 months is shaping up to be a real headache in making upgrade decisions in the Intel world. Intel have indicated their next generation of boards will be BTX without AGP support. This looks like an upgrade could mean new case, possibly power supply, video card and possibly ram. I am hoping that companies like MSI will produce a transitional product that allows new processors and chip sets on an atx board. If that doesn't happen I see a lot of people switching to AMD.

  • 9700 Pro / SIS 648 MAX /Games Issues

    Hi Everybody!
Everything seem to be find with my PC, but everytime I play a game, I'm sent back to the desktop eventuelly. I have a fresh Install PC with XP SP1, latest driver from ATI (Catalyst version 3.0) directx 9 install, BY the way my mobo is a SIS 648 MAX from MSI with the lastest AGP and IDE Drivers installed (for this motherboard of course) and I have the latest version of the bios. here the description of my Machine.
    Intel 2.4 P4 533 northwood
    1024 gig of DDR 333
    Ati 9700 pro AGP 8X
    SB Audigy
    120 Gig HD Seagate
    With Windows XP SP1 Installed
Any suggestion!??? all my game do this

Try stepping down (underclocking) your RAM tp run @ 266..   There is a huge issue that hasnt been addressed by MSI or ATI at this point.  Its a latency issue.
It could be solved by ATI with a new driver that decreases the AGP latency or MSI could update a BIOS that could be flashed that allowed to reduce AGP slot latency manually.
Let me know if it helps you!

  • Wierd issues with 648 MAX-L

I recently put a system together with the 648 Max-L mobo.
    P4 2.4
    Maxtor ATA133
    Windows XP
    1 Gig PC2700 Crucial
    Radeon 9700 (non-pro)
Philips Seismic Edge (was Aureal Superquad)
    Having some weird issues;
    1) Occasional crashes -I ran Goldmemory tests and the ram failed.....so I am RMA'g the ram but......ran Memtest 86 and it passed! ????????? So I think maybe it's good ram and the mobo is having a compatibility issue.
    2) When I turn the PC off, the drives light up! Namely the operting lights actually come on and burn steady when I turn off the PC....I have to hit the main kill switch to shut them off. Really weird.
    3) Maxtor has bad sector, but I am going to do a low end format that Maxtor says will fix that.
Anyone have any ideas? Once I do everything else, the next step is to get a new mobo....but this one works good other then the above issues, and I hate to waste the $75.00 I paid for what should be a good mobo. I could get another board and RMA this one....but if it IS the board I doubt I will buy the same one.
Anyone have any similar issues or ideas?

Oh, It also is in a mid tower ATX case with a 400W Mustang power supply.

  • SIS 648 max w/ATI AIW 9800 pro issue

Hey all...    I am trying to install a new Ati AIW 9800 pro in to my PC.  The Motherboard is a MSI 648 Max-L.......    Every time I install the old or new Driver set for the Ati card it kills my network connection I cannot connect to the internet or other PC in my network...  I cant even ping my router.   I have to restore my PC back to the time before the install and all is fine even with the card still in the PC with no drivers loaded.       Hers the kicker I can install just the ati display drivers an all is fine but as soon as I install the Multimedia drivers I lose all network connection and have to do a restore to get it back.  Even if I delete the drivers and reboot the PC my network connection is gone, have to do a restore to get it back.
    Any ideas on this issue????

  • ATI Graphics card not detected on cold boot, works on warm boot

    Hi All,
I hope you can help me out with this.
    I'm using Radeon HD7850 with ATI-Catalyst.
The issue is, if I do a cold boot (physically turn off the power, turn back on) the system won't boot into X, only tty.
At this point, a reboot works fine.
Or if I don't turn off the power, just shutdown and reboot (warm boot), it works ok.
Here's the Xorg log on cold boot:

Setting the PCI BusID in Xorg.conf seems to have no effect, even if I set it to 6:0:0 or 7:0:0, its still the same.
Do I need to set AutoAddDevices off?

MisterAnderson wrote:Does the same happen with the opensource radeon drivers? (xf86-video-ati)
    Thanks for the reply!
The open source driver doesn't support my card yet. I tried installing it first since its the recommended driver, but Xorg couldn't detect any display at all.
It seems the PCI BusID is not being read from the xorg.conf file. There's auto detection everytime the PC boots.

  • 648 max , testing base and extended memory

I dont see the thread i answered to one time that someone spoke of using ddr400 with 648 max or max-L board and they were getting testing base and extended memory error from the LED's.  Well i just got the same error today and my system would not boot i cut the power to the PS. and turned it back on it would start to boot and hang i could barely get to the windows logo sometimes the vid card wouldnt even boot the logo to the screen. This is with an updated mobo that msi sent me that i had just put in , it seemed to run fine at first then this problem started occuring.  The only difference i had in the setup from the previous outdated board was i had the mem in DIMM 3 and not DIMM 1, so i moved the memory back over to DIMM 3 and now the problem is gone. Just something for those of you with the same problem to try.
Oh and i forgot one more issue, i cannot set the dram speed in the bios manually i have ddr 333 it should be 167 mhz so i set it to 4/5  and the system will not boot at all  i end up having to reset cmos.  I called MSI about that and they told me to just have it set to SPD , I said i know that and im fine with leaving it that way but it should let me set it manually if i wanted to and that i wondered if that had anything to do with the random " testing base and extended memory " problem.

    It was probably myt thread...
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/viewindex.php?threadid=6204&boardid=10&styleid=1
Have done some testing with both DDR333 and DDR400 and my results are in the thread.
Right no I'm using my DDR400 as DDR333, manually set to 167MHz, using DIMM1, and havn't seen any problems. I'll try the DIMM3 to see if I get any changes.
And by the way.. I tried setting my DDR400 manually to 200MHz and it wouldn't boot at all. After a lot of ugly language I finally got it back to the BIOS....after a reset of the CMOS.
Seams like you should use SPD if you want to use the correct freq for your RAM.
Have you tested the new 1.3 BIOS?

  • Cold boot but won't warm boot

    I have a system with a 648 Max MSI-6585 Mainboard.
It works fine once its running
    BUT
    it won't warm boot.
If I try to reboot or sometimes even power it up normally
I just get an initial beep and not the final POST beep
The D-Bracket lights say it is at the floppy seek stage.
    To boot it I can:
    (a) Turn the power off at the wall
    (b) disconnect the ATX power from the mainboard
    (c) clear the CMOS
    (a) usually works, (b) generally works if (a) doesn't and if neither of them helps (c) always works.
If I write ANYTHING to CMOS (ie change BIOS settings or even if Windows sets the clock) then I HAVE to clear the CMOS.
This problem developed BEFORE I flashed the BIOS but I ave now flashed it (twice) to v 1.5.  No problems with the flashing, and I'm experienced at flashing bios's.
    Any ideas?
    Stats:
    Using a P4 2.4 GHz CPU
With 512 Megs PC3200 DDR RAM
    Hercules ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 7500
    Hercules Firewire DV card.
120 Gig 7200 rpm ATA 100 WD HDD with 8 meb cache
    Pioneer Slot-in DVD
    Aopen 52x CD-RW
    Realtek Ethernet Card.

Since the last post I tried the system with different PSU's, different ram and different video - different everything in effect.  Eventually I gave up and took the motherboard back for replacement.  The new board is HT ready but I have HT disabled as the CPU is not HT capable.
The new motherboard worked at first then started doing the same thing.
I notice that when the cmos is cleared it detects the CPU as a 1.8 and not a 2.4 GHz.  I have had some success in getting the system to reboot by changing some memory settings.  Even though I am using PC3200 DDR RAM it seems to boot more often if I set the RAM at 333 MHz instead.
I have also set the performance timing to safe and altered the CAS setting and another  timing (MT I think?)
The system rebooted with these a few times but has since reverted to lights on, no action mode, with the D Bracket lights stuck at 'floppy initialisation'or sometimes 'memory'.
I am at my wits end with this problem.

  • What show 2nd termo-controller on a MSI 648 MAX?

    Hi from Russia.
    I have 43 motherboards MSI 648 MAX (HT-ready).
My computers spontaneously freezes. I think, that this problem because of overheating motherboard chipset. Motherboard Monitor showing t80 Celsius on a 2nd termo controller. This is error, or really big temperature of a SiS chipset (t80 on all motherboards)?
And i have other problem in a Counter-Strike.I press ESC when i play in OpenGL mode and i have black screen with freeze (video GF4 Ti4200 AGPx8 )
Maybe anybody know how solve this problems?
    Please sorry for my english.

Did you ever resolve this?  I have a similar problem
Machine has been running with a 512 Mb/333 MHz module in slot 1 for 2 years with no problems.  I want to increase the memory size.  Tried adding all sorts of combinations of other modules, but won't boot.  I went out and purchased a compatible Kingston 1 Gb/333 MHz CAS 2.5, compatible according to Kingston site.  The memory counts to 1 Gb, and everything POST seems to work. I get a beep, and then nothing.  Trying different slots, the same problem.  The 512 Mb works in all slots, but not the 1 Gb.
What is the fix for this MSI memory upgrade issue?
