648Max and Radeon 9700 - Im confused

I just installed a Radeon 9700 pro. I was getting a beep sequence when booting and it would go no further. I would just restart the computer and it would come up fine.
Everying appears to work fine after that but I do not like things to work any other way than perfect.
I looked into these boards and have been reading alot about this issue and so I checked my versions.
I seem to have A revision 1.0 Motherboard and a revision 1.1 Radeon 9700pro(D33011).
Should I talk to MSI and ATI about replacing them?

i had boot problems with this combo when i first bought them. msi asked me when i purchased the MB and asked for a number on the box tht shows what month it was made.  if it was made last september they had a issue with 9700 and the board and they rma''d the board and everything works fine now.
dont know if that would be your fix though but i would suggest talking to them.
other than that make sure your using bios 1.1 or 1.3 (heard 1.2 was problematic for 9700) and that your power supply is adequet.
  Edit:
just saw you had rev 1.1 of the 9700. that rev has had boot issues with agp 8 MB's.  so if the problem i described doesnt fit yours(not made in sept) you might talk to ati about getting a rev 1.3 or higher.   i had to get the 1.3 when i was using a via agp8 board and people on Rage3d had problems with the same issues on the sis 648 boards also.

I had various lock-ups, crashes and "Windows detected and recovered from a device failure" error messages with my GNB MAX motherboard and Radeon 9700 and they are now fixed.
I was able to receive a beta version of an upcoming set of drivers from ATI and they did the trick!!
Just wanted to give you all some hope.
    Hang in there!

Oops, I spoke too soon.  I think FastWrites is on (I remember turning it off before on previous drivers and noticing a big slow down that is not present now) but there isn't a SmartGart tab appearing in my ATI control panel any more.  I checked Advanced - Options - Details and yes, 8X is on.
How can I verify that FastWrites is on without the SmartGart tab?

  • MSI K7T266PRO2-RU and Radeon 9700 (non-pro)

    Hi!
    I'm thinking of upgrading to a Radeon 9700 non-pro,
and just thought I'd check this forum to see
if there are any compatibility issues between
my K7T266PRO2-RU and Radeon 9700 (like
    there were between GF4mx).
    If someone has a similar setup (k7t266pro2 w. 9700PRO/non-pro)
I would like to hear of your experience with this.
    I appreciate your help.

    Hi,
I can't remember any problems with it, as long as you make sure the powersupply can handle it.

  • KT4 Ultra and Radeon 9700 Pro

Ok I have a question. So it seems there is an issue with this particular card and the KT4 Ultra. So what in the $#%@ brand and model 8x agp card did MSI use to test the 8x function of this board? I thought the 9700 pro was the only 8x card out right now? If its not why wasn't it tested by them??? I hope this will be fixed by a bios update, but not for me, for the others out there, as for me, I am taking this back and I'm getting an Epox board, I heard Asus has similair problems but Epox 8x board works. Very sad that I had to spend hours trying to figure this out and it wasn't even my error.

ATI has already stated (about 2 weeks ago) that a problem does exist with the Radeon 9700 and certain 8x AGP boards. You can RMA the board and it will either be replaced or the BIOS will be flashed at no charge to you. Go to http://www.ati.com and send them an email.

I have not run MEMTEST, but i've tried other ram, with the same problem. I've also tried different vid cards, such as a Radeon 7000, a 9600 pro, and a nVidia mx440, all of which worked flawlessly. Now in the bios, i have the AGP Fast write set to Off, the aperature set to 256mb, and the  VLink 8x support is disabled (therefore set to 4x). The primary graphics adapter is set to AGP. The AGP Frequency is set to the default, and so is the voltage. ALSO, when i was talkin with MSI, then sent me an updated bios. the bios file says 3.36, but in the actual bios, it says 3.31. is this anything to worry about? I have not done driver clean, or used the Omega drivers yet, but i will do that now. Please reply if you can help or if you need more information.
    1) why set fast write to off?  mine is on.
    2) why set the aperature so much higher than the available onboard ram on the 9700?

  • MEGA 180 and Radeon 9700 Pro

i was reading and people sticked in an 9800pro and it worked fine so i took a gamble and got a 9700pro
ok took me 2hrs yesterday to stick the 9700pro in the mega and i had to take the psu, heatsink and cdrw out to do so and it booted fine the 1st time... then i installed the drivers and restarted the kb wasnt working so i thought it wasnt plugged in, checked it and it was plugged in so turned off the comp and turned it back on and the monitor was blank but i can hear it like loading so i reset the cmos and all i hear was beepings sound when i turned it on and nothing on the screen.... so turned it off again and waited a while and turn it back on and all i get is a black screen..... took out the 9700 pro and went back to onboard graphics and everything works fine again.... so i guess there is no way that i can get the 9700 pro to work on this right?
any help is apperciated thanks in advanced

where did you get the 9700pro from?
these are no longer manufactured, so i guess you have bought this "used" from somewhere (ebay perhaps?)
try it in another computer system, and see if it does the same in there. if it does then you have bought a duff card
yes i got it off someone used and no there is nothing wrong with it cuz i just tired it on my bro's desktop (p4 1.8ghz) and it works fine... and i just noticed that his psu is 250watts also and it works fine so then shouldnt it run on the mega also if it works on his comp with 250watts psu? or i guess its just differeent psu's??

  • KT4 and Radeon 9700 Pro......

Ok I found that all my 3d games lock up with any driver version, with all the via 4 in 1, trust me there is nothing I haven't checked. Another thing I found is the card works great on my other pc which is not an 8x AGP motherboard. So I hear everywhere on many other forums, "turn it to 4x agp on your board and try", oh boy I sure would if that section WASN'T GREYED OUT AT AUTO!!!!!!!!!!! Please MSI, what is the point of not letting us lower the AGP speed, especially if people are reporting problems with this card and your motherboards. I figured one time, just once, I would stray from Asus and Epox and buy an MSI since it advertised 8X agp ( god knows if they tested a real 8x agp card with the board ), this has been a major mistake, and since I have to live with it, all I ask is that you put out a bios update so we can lower the agp speed. thanks

    4esth,
There is no way to allow the user to manually set AGP4x on an AGP8x card on MSI KT4 Ultra.
Did you come across any other VIA KT400 boards that allow user to manually set AGP4x on an AGP8x card, please let us know. Until now I haven't found one. Or else it would serve as a good point to request MSI. But I doubt there is any at the moment.
Other than that, I would suggest you to check for the heatsink condition on the card itself. Apply some Arctic Silver III if you have, lap the core if you dare as some core GPU is not FLAT and does not have good contact with the heatsink.

  • MSI KT400 and RADEON 9700 PRO

I'm having many problems with this combination: some games don't work.
I've read there are problems with agp 8x, any advice?
    I can't play:
    mechwarrior mercenaries
    arx fatalis
    platoon
    thanx!

Since the KT400 is a VIA Chipset based motherboard and this is an Nvidia/AMD/SiS SocketA forum I am moving it to the VIA based forum.
Perhaps you can elaborate on exact problems and provide a complete hardware listing, including your power supply's combined wattage across the +5v and +3v rails.

  • KT4 Ultra +Radeon 9700 Pro Trouble Free !

After a few months of relatively trouble free gaming with KT4 Ultra and Radeon 9700 Pro, I was shocked to find recently that my PC began to crash after only a few minutes of gameplay.   8o
Believing that a reinstall of all the relavent drivers would cure the problem, I set about trawling through the latest advice on what works / doesnt work. This I have to say was a minefield of anecdotes, mainly bad ones - as most of you guys are probably aware !
After installing drivers as 'best' I could, the problem remained the same.
It would appear that to ask for a complete list of recommended drivers is futile, since there is little correlation between reported 'fixes'. There is always someone reporting that the latest versions are causing problems.
For the moment, this tale has a happy ending cos I found that the system is getting too hot (after some months !), so with the side panel off and a 12 inch desk fan blowing inside I managed a 4 hour session with now problems. )
The purpose of the post is to highlight the disturbing fragility of these systems (which i'm sure many of you have first hand experince), both in hardware and software and to share my disbelief at the apparent lack of sustained testing that these boards undergo.
Looks like a better cooling system is in order

It's unfortunate that most of the new hardware seems to pump out heat. The ATI 9700 pro use about 100W of power on it's own. The whole system puts out enough heat to warm a small room.
I have noticed that the heatsink on the ATI card gets very hot, even though it has a fairly serious fan on it (the fan on my Sapphire card is a lot like a blue orb).
I am wondering if a lot of problems with these setups are thermal. I have the KT4 Ultra and ATI 9700 pro and it has not given problems at all.
I have (from past experience) installed plenty of cooling in my case (a full tower, that helps too). I find that the cooler everything as kept, the less problems there are.
I think that at some stage in the near future there will have to be a change somewhere. Either in heat output (reduction in power use) or cooling.

I can get everything working with OSS drivers, and somewhat working with fglrx. `glxinfo` tells me DRI is working. However, when running `glxgears`, weird things happen. The gears dont' seem to be turning, but I get about 2500~ FPS. Then, if I were to try fgl_glxgears, everything dies. The machine locks up, my only option being a magic sysreq reboot. Is this simply a xorg.conf configuration problem?
Oddly, I recently tried out the fglrx drivers again by using aticonfig to generate a xorg.conf, and now it seems like I startup in multimonitor mode, and I don't seem to be able to stop that from happening.
If anybody could give me some sample xorg.conf to test out, it would be awesome.
My laptop is an obscure ABS Mayhem G2.
    Any other information required?
    Thanks ahead of time.

that is suggesting to me either your PSU is failing, or it is a Poor PSU with over-optimistic amp ratings (eg Q-Tec). it will all appear to work fine on your older board, as that has lower power requirements, have a look in my sticky Is your problem caused by your PSU? for more info and advice.

  • Computer shuts down with Radeon 9700

    Hi all.
On most motherboards, the HALT ON ERROR section would allow you to specify what errors would cause your computer to shutdown if a system error occured.
My ATI RADEON 9700 is causing me a lot of grief. It's actually my second ATI 9700 Pro and my second KT4V mobo to fix this.   The cards' acting up again after 6 months of error-free play, until today.
What I find annoying is that HALT section 99.9% of bios has is missing from the KT4V bios setup.  I want to halt on NO errors (you know, where you can halt on: all but keyboard, etc).  Why is this missing from the BIOS settings? Is there something I can tweak to resolve this?
The 9700 Pro video card I have rocks, it's just too bad that it doesn't like this motherboard.
    Specs:
KT4V Mobo with 350W EVERMAX powersupply
    Athlon 2500+ XP CPU
    1.0Gb Micron DDR 2700
    XP Pro (fully updated)
Drivers fully updated with MSI Live Update 3

try other graphics board to your system, if it works, then an issue with compatibility with your board exist,  or try checking your power supply if it can really handle new types of graphic boards, if not buy a more powerful PSU with atleast 350watts up... or better yet update to newer bios version for your mobo or if anything fails,... pray!
    good day..!

  • MSI KT4 ULTRA-BFISR + Ati Radeon 9700 pro = not good??

    Hello everybody!
First of all, i youst have to say that i think MSI have the best motherboards....
Here's the problem (i haven't buyed anything yet!):
I am going to buy MSI KT4 ULTRA-BFISR and ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, but i have read many places that Radeon aint working with MSI KT4-based cards! Im am going to buy an 520W Power (i aint so good in english so i hope you now what i write  :D )
I am also going to buy 2 x Cosair pc3500 xms ram... Is this one working with the motherboard by the way?
But my question is: Will the Ati Radeon 9700 pro work with this card? (i must remember to buy the 1.3 version!) I am gonna get my Radeon 9700 pro from USA, how can i now when i order that is an 1.3 card?
    Thank you for answering!  :]

I think also that even there is two drivers, that is not a reaseon why it isn't work. One time I install only standard VGA drivers, but result was that I got two standard VGA driver.  8o
First time I try without VIA drivers, then with 4.42 and 4.43 VIA drivers. Result was almost same all the time, it always crash when Nature test start, but this exist also to older mobo (Abit KT7A-RAID). Problem exits few games they lock up or stuttering. Ati demos works fine, but one time that car demo stuttering a lot, but I transfer data at same, so I'm not sure what was reason.
This moment I don't have possibilities to try Hyperion 4.45 drivers or something else, because it's my friend computer.
    MSI KT4V 6712 (Bios 1.0)
    AMD Athlon 1.2
    512 MB DDR 333 RAM

    Power 300W
    Realtek Ethernet card
    Samsung 40GB harddrive
    Samsung DVD
    VIA 4.42 and 4.43

  • MSI KT6 Delta LSR and Radeon 9600 XT 256mb x8 AGP Problem

    hi,
Ive just brought a Radeon 9600 XT 256mb and it wont run at x8 agp at all, games lockup as soon as i start them, within 5 mins all text on display corrupts and i get a message saying the gpu recover has set the gpu to default settings.
I cant change anything in BIOS to set it to x4 agp as its not selectable and says AUTO only for agp speed setting.
Only way to alter is goto smartgart in ATI drivers and select x 4 agp if u get in before text corrupts :(
Ive managed to get it stable at x4 agp now through smartgart.
BUT it says on box and in manual this motherboard supports agp x8 but why dont it run it ???
i havent a clue whats up with it.

    hi,
Ive got it running stable in x4 agp and found a post on ATI website about some motherboards not working proberly at x8 agp with Radeon 9600 series graphics cards.
    http://mirror.ati.com/support/infobase/4219.html
    Got nice scores in 3dmark 2001 and 3dmark 2003
But what confuses me is Quake 3 demo that didnt change at all over my old card and radeon 9000 pro i tried once too.
    I got
    174fps with Radeon 9100
    175fps with Radeon 9000 pro
    173fps with Radeon 9600 XT 256mb
    Thats on Athlon xp 1700
    strange or what ?
oh well its a old demo anyway but main thing is big increase in 3dmark 2001 by over 2000 marks
