6509e SUP-2T VSS and 100BASE-X SFP

Dear All,
i need to connect via 100BASE-X uplinks some access switches to 6509e VSS distribution Switches having SUP-2T.
It seems that the only module on 6509e supporting 100BASE-X SFP is WS-X6148-FE-SFP. This module is going EoS and is not supportes in VSS.
Is there any other modules that i can use?
Thanks and Regards
Giuseppe

  • Qu. about Deploying MPLS on Sup-2T VSS

    Hi,
We are planning to deploy a new campus network comprising of a Core (Nexus 7K), 2 client aggregation modules (Catalyst 6500 /w Sup-2T VSS) and a single Data Centre module (Nexus 7k).
MPLS is being deployed to provide segregation of services. Now in a traditional MPLS campus deployment, we would have a pair of Core switches performing the P, or LSR function, and the aggregation devices each performing the role of the PE, or LER. Load balancing would be achieved by using different RDs for each PE.
In the world of VSS however we obviously change this model, with a pair of PE switches appearing as "one" to the Core or P node. In this scenario we would just use the one RD and use a Layer-3 Port channel from the VSS node to each P node to provide the resilience.
I have read a few posts about this type of deployment and the general consensus seems to be sticking with a non VSS deployment, mainly for simplicity and the ability to have greater visibility into what is going on under the hood.
Has anyone deployed MPLS using VSS ? Does anyone have any views or recommendations as to why one would choose one particular method over the other ?
I think my personal preference will be to go non VSS, then at least we have the same configuration across all aggregation modules (Nexus / Catalyst).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Chris.

    Hi Alessio,
The underlying design will be a traditional Access - Distribution - Core - Distribution - Access model. With a hierarchical OSPF backbone design, i.e. area 0 for Core and backbone links, with the distribution switches configured as ASBRs. We are then planning to configure an iBGP overlay on this, and then MPLS VPN using MP-BGP to provide network segregation. This is something I have done before on a Catalyst / Nexus backbone and works well, I have just never used VSS to accomplish this. So I just wanted to understand if there are any best practice recommendations for VSS which may not be in the path isolation design doc.
For example, in a traditional non VSS deployment, load balancing is typical configured by configuring different RD's across a pair of PEs with the same RT which route a common subnet. Different VPNv4 prefixes are then advertised to the Core / P nodes for the same IPv4 subnets. In a VSS deployment, this isn't possible, because obviously there is only a single control plane, so load balancing is achieved by the hash algorythm used on the Layer 3 port channels connecting the PE to the Core - are there any other considerations such as this which I need to be aware of ?
I hope this helps explain the design a little better.
    Chris.

  • What are the differences between Easy VSS and Traditional VSS on Catalyst 4500E with Sup 8E ?

I would like to know which feature is different between Easy VSS and Traditional VSS.
I know "Easy VSS is a new way of implementing VSS by using a single command" but I cannot find more information about it.
    Please help.
    Thank you.
    Nash

Easy VSS is a simplified and automated way of configuring VSS for first time. Once a VSS is configured then it same as traditional VSS in functionality.
There is no concept of layer 2 or layer 3 VSL link. VSL is the internal portchannel link and you cannot configure as layer 2 or layer 3 portchannel.
Following is the link of Easy VSS steps.

  • SRW2008 with a 100Base-FX SFP?

i got a 100Base-FX SFP from my localloop provider and tried to use it in a Linksys SRW2008 switch.
it seems the SFP ports are fixed to 1000Base. is there a way around this limitation?
    thanks for your help.

    Hi
Check  software requirements and configuration requirements in the attached guide.
I think it gives you your answer (I hope )
    It suggests you need 1.0.3 software and then try the following;
    Manually Configuring the 100M SFP
STEP 1 On the Port Configuration page, click Detail.
STEP 2 In the Port Configuration popup window, select eth 100M in the SFP Speed field.
    STEP 3 Save your changes.
STEP 4 Insert the 100M SFP module.
    Hope this helps

  • 100BASE-BX10 SFP

    Hi All,
I have several Cisco 3560C setup at multiple stations. The Cisco 3560C are connected in a daisy chain between each other using 100BASE-BX10-D and 100BASE-BX10-U SFP. So, on the first Cisco 3560C (station 1), I have a U-type connecting to the second Cisco 3560C (station 2.). The second Cisco 3560C (station 2) will have a D-type and U-type SFP where the D-type connects to the previous station 1 on its U-type SFP. This setup repeats for station 3 onwards.
It seems that these connections between the stations, I noticed that the Cisco switch registers the link at 100Mb half-duplex and I see incrementing CRCs and collisions. I am not able to hard-code the interface to 100Mb FULL as it seems that the interface configuration does not give me the option to do a 'speed 100' or 'duplex full'.
Is this normal for these kinds of SFP?

If its clean, check the TX/RX power levels with a power meters.  End-to-end; bidirectional test, on both lamdas.
Because of the CWDM going on, I'm not sure I'd trust the internal "show hard" or
"show interfaces interface-id transceiver detail" internaly.
Obviously this is something common/systemic since it happens betwen multiple locations.
Is the fiber the common denominator?

  • Issues with CWLMS 3.2 RME 4.3.1 cannot fetch vlan.dat off a VSS and 4510.

    Hi,
I am having a major headache with RME collecting the vlan.dat from a VSS and 4510, the device and credentials work fine, however when archiving the config i get partial success due to vlan failing. You can see in the IC_Services log that it attempts to TFTP the .dat file off which it fails with, i believe vlan fetch is only supported by SSH or telnet
when you do a CDA test both devices pass on everything..

everyone application snapshot ? After created snapshot the windows backup copy data from snapshot to windowsimagebackup ? And If windows backup create different snapshot how detect which files is changed ?
    thank you
    Falcon

    Hi,
Windows Server Backup stores backup versions in volume shadow copies. After the data write is complete, Windows Server Backup creates a shadow copy of the volume where the backup is stored using Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). This shadow copy retains the
state of the storage volume as a “backup version” or “point-in-time” of the backup and must restore using this backup version.
You could refer to the article below to know the steps of a back up operation performs:
Backup Version and Space Management in Windows Server Backup
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/06/22/backup-version-and-space-management-in-windows-server-backup.aspx
Windows Server Backup uses Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and block-level backup technology to back up and recover your operating system, files and folders, and volumes. The Volume Shadow Copy Service is used to differentiate between backup sets, and to track
where the various blocks are being written to within the shadow copy storage.

    I'm searching a switch that does support 10G-Ethernet RJ45 (10GBASE-T) and direct attached SFP+ Twinax (10GBASE-CR).

Maybe a media converter is enough for your demand.
