655 MAX & Tyan G9700 Pro

Please Help, I have the following problem.
My 655 Max-FISR motherboard has a Silicon Integrated Systems (SIS) chipset, Device Manager displays the following error message for my Tyan Tachyon G9700 Pro Video Card.
Code 10 - the device cannot start.
If you manually update the driver in Device Manager, the video card seems to be installed correctly. However, the video card reverts to the "code 10" status when you restart the computer. How can this problem be resolved?
The Following is a Copy of the Conflict/Sharing with regards to this problem. Is it a setting in the BIOS that I am Missing? Its probably something simple but I don't know what. Please Help.

i have the same board and the same system information report.
I have a ATI radeon 9700 and it keep locking up in games, or will lock up if I don't install the drivers exactly right (windows xp install's drivers first, then i install the updated drivers from ati, forget simply clicking the "install" button on the cd.
Ive heard that increaseing the voltage to 1.7 helps ome people, but i haven't tried it yet.

When I use four 512MB RAM modules, my computer starts up and works fine. The only problem is, that I can't restart the it (D-LED boot-error: Memory Failure). To make it run again i have to turn it off and unplug the power cable.
When there are only two RAM modules installed (slot 1 & 3), everything works fine.
What settings do I need to make in the BIOS that it works with all 4 memory modules?

  • Problems with 655-MAX FISR

I have an MSI 655-MAX FISR motherboard and I installed a Radeon 9000 128mb Pro on it. I play counter-strike alot and on my old pc, like 2 or 3 months before I built this one it started to skip and I got this motherboard and it skips on counter-strike too. I play for like 10-15 seconds then I freeze for like 5-10 then I play for like 10-15 seconds again and so on. I have tried a Radeon 9700 Pro 128mb and it does the same thing and I have also tried different ram and it does the same thing. What could be causing this problem? Is it the fact that this motherboard only works with Geforce cards ? Plz help me! Thanks.

The solution for me is: Disable Fast Write is the BIOS and
in WinXP and put AGP to 4x instead of 8x in WinXP
Now i got 5723 points in 3DMark 2003 and no problems
You can find these options in WinXP: Display Properties ->

  • 655-max Fisr

    Hi,
I got some problems with my MSI 655-MAX FISR Motherboard. I play alot of Counter-Strike and when I play my comp freezes for about 5 seconds then I can move again for like 10-15 seconds then it freezes again for 5 seconds and so on. It does this over and over and frankly I don't know what the problem is. I have a Radeon 9000 128mb Pro and I tested a Radeon 9700 128mb Pro on it but it did the same thing. Could it be my memory or something???
    My Rig Is As Follows:
    Pentium 4 2.41Ghz
    Maxtor 80 Gig HD
    Xcase 550 Watt Power Supply
    PC2100 266mhz 512DDR RamRadeon 9000 128mb Pro
2 Front fans, 1 Rear fan, 1 Side Panel fan, plus the CPU and VGA fans.
Someone please help me with this problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dont forget now, Counter Strike is a Very Graphics Intensive 3D Game, And I am in NO way Knocking your Graphics Card But Understand that the Radeon 9000 is NOT Really Built For High Performance Gaming Card. You should Save up for a Higher Performance "Gaming GPU", I mean I have seen the All Powerful ATI-9700-Pro Advertized for $200.00US Dont Forget this Card was Over $400.00 1 Year AGO, and it is Just a Hair Bit Slower than the 9800-XT....Second, I think that You have answered your Own Question as Far as your Current RAM is Concerned, I mean I see where your 655-MAX Even Supports Up to PC-3200 (DDR-400MHZ) RAM >>> http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/product_detail.asp?model=655_Max-FISR   If you were to Get Even 512MB of some Either Corsair, or Kingston "Value Series" RAM, Your Bandwith would Increase by Leaps and Bounds .
Your Processor is Definitely Fast enough for Great Gaming, along with your MB. So if I were you, I would First Upgrade the RAM, and see where this Brings you, and you can Do this For about $100.00 Bucks. Then worry about updating Graphics Later, Especially if other than the Temporary "Lock-Ups" and resuming, You are Satisfied with the Overall Graphics Quality...............Sean REILLY875

  • Maxed out MacBook pro or Mid level MacBook pro with Retina?

I am entering my first year in university in the next couple weeks. I am going to be studying commerce for the next 4 years. I want a macbook that will last me for the 4 years and still be a good product at that time period. Now I am wondering if I should spend $2000  on the maxed out MacBook pro or 2600 for the midlevel MacBookmacbook pro with Retina display. Looking forward to great feedback. Thanks

It depends on how far you want to go - and how much you want to spend - in maxing out the computer. Let me visit the Apple Store -
The 'base model' you should go with is the:
    15-inch: 2.6 GHz
    2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    750GB 5400-rpm hard drive
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
    Built-in battery (7 hours)
This will be a 'stock' item and has the maximum amount of RAM that Apple will install and is $2,199. The only modifcation to make on this model is the CPU and hard drive, as it also comes with the maxed out VRAM for the NVIDIA graphics card. I wouldn't go for the extra speed bump on the CPU - it's just not worth it. What is worth the extra money is an uprade to the hard drive - from the 750GB 5400-rpm to the 750GB 7200-rpm for an extra $50. If you really want to max it out, of course, you could add the $900 option of the 512GB SSD, but I wouldn't do that - simply too much to pay. So for $2,249 you could get:
    15-inch: 2.6 GHz
    2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    750GB 7200-rpm hard drive
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory
    Built-in battery (7 hours)
...and have a very fast (not warp speed, but fast) computer that should you ever decide to upgrade, you can.
As for the Retina display, it's simply something that I would not invest in at this time. The 'base' model, with only 8GB of RAM is $2,799.00. Increase that RAM to 16GB, and you're looking at $2,999. The extra $750 just isn't worth it. And with few applications taking advantage of the Retina display (if they ever do) you're going to be looking at pixelated tools, text, etc., for who knows how many years. You could get by running only Apple applications, I suppose, but I'm just not ready to be placed in that kind of restrictive mode... are you?
    Just my 2¢, again...

  • Maxed out Mac Pro (nearly new) DEAD SLOW - why???

*I have always been a PC guy (animation and film production is what I do -- www.speedbumpstudios.com) but I decided to bite the bullet and go Mac. I maxed out my Mac Pro-- if it's available, I got it. It's a 15,000 machine. Great. So I've had it for a few months and the thing is so dead slow I am finding it almost unusable. My three year old PC laptop kicks its butt. Here are the symptoms.*
*Opening Photoshop takes anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes. Once it is open, if I try to open a file, it takes another couple of minutes for the finder to pop up so I can search for it.*
*iTunes regularly hangs and/or takes several minutes to load. My iPod, which is also new, sometimes cannot even connect to it (error).*
*HP scanning software takes minutes to open. Once the scan is ready to be saved, it takes minutes for finder to even offer the option to name the new file.*
*Almost all the software on this thing starts up painfully slow.*
*IMPORTANT: I have noticed that the machine runs almost all right immediately after a restart. The longer it runs, the worse these symptoms get.*
*ALSO IMPORTANT: -- I had been running Boot Camp on the machine, allowing me to boot into Windows XP. Recently bought Parallels and ran that. While this Mac never ran great, the problems seemed to get markedly worse at that point. I have since, out of desperation, removed Parellels completely, but the problems persist.*
*I am, of course, sick about how much I am paying for this machine that is supposed to be the best available and it about as useful as a boat anchor. WHAT SHOULD I DO!?*

    George, I feel your pain. I too have a maxed out Mac Pro;
    Mac Pro - 8 Core (Dual Quad-Core 3GHz)
    16GB RAM (Crucial Memory)
    4x 750GB Drives
    ATI 1900x Vid Card
    2x 30" Cinema Displays
etc etc etc .... I even have a 2-port eSATA cables installed (OWC) with a 1.5TB external drive (Iomega, and fast as the dickens!)
My machine has been in the Apple repair facilities THREE times so far (I am working with an executive relations person for 3 months now) and we are about to swap it out for a new machine because the term "ghosts in the machine" apply to many Mac Pros. In fact, the last time Apple fixed this machine was yesterday, replacing a bluetooth module, and as soon as I booted the machine it started having kernel panics (for the first time), we thought it was the RAM Riser cards being seated wrong... after making sure everything was seated properly, and doing a complete OS reinstall, it is still kernel panic-ing every hour (if I let the machine sit quietly)...so, there is a ghost in this machine that does not want to go away.
To get your situation though, MY machine has ALWAYS been much slower than the dual-G5 I replaced last April. You are not alone here. This is an 8-Core machine, ran Tiger slow and is now running Leopard only about 20% faster, which is still slower than the G5. Makes me want to cry sometimes because I paid, what, $1300 for the processor upgrade alone?
Something is wrong with your machine. I suppose you have already tried to reinstall, reformat your drives, correct permissions, etc and still found your machine wanting in the ways of speed, right? What you need to do is to contact Apple Executive Relations and tell them what is going on. Once they see that you ordered such an expensive machine (no one buys extra RAM from Apple so they will sympathize right there!) they WILL contact you and work with you until your problem is solved. The only reason they have not replaced MY machine yet (they will usually do so after the 2nd or 3rd repair attempt) is because in my case I cannot afford the downtime. Now, however, I think we have to because no one can figure out why this machine is having panics after sitting still for an hour.
Anyway, be assured this is NOT representative of Apple or the Mac Pro speed. Mac Pro's are plenty fast, and unbelievably fast with newer, Intel-based software (CS3), and even though Leopard has many many bugs it is faster than Tiger. My partner has the same machine as I do and it is so fast I think it does most of his work before he even arrives in the morning.
Work with Apple, let them fix your machine or replace it. They will.

  • 655 Max-LS + Geforce FX 5600

I'm having problems with the MSI 655 MAX-LS motherboard and MSI 5600 FX Cards, tried both the 128mb and 256mb version. It works fine until a driver is installed, then I just get a blank screen when it boots into win. Doesn't matter which driver you use, tried so many versions, tried the latest AGP driver from SiS, there's no new bios for the Motherboard. If I put in a Geforce 4 MX 440 it works just fine ... got any ideas? I was about to look for a flash for the FX cards ...

    Hi IceAce,
Can I have more details of your com specs cos it looks to me like you are facing a PSU problem (most likely) as you are running a FX 5600 card and a P4 board. Did you update your windows service packs?
You can also check on http://www.hardwarezone.com to one of their reviews on the FX drivers that is more suitable for your system.
    All the Best... :D!!!

  • 655 Max FISR SATA & Video Card Troubles

    Hi all
I put together my 655 Max FISR (non HT) based system 3 weeks ago and have had nothing but problems (this is the third PC I've built and it's the only one to have caused major problems).  Initially the memory and video card were problematic, stopping me from installing Windows XP, but having read some of the other threads the poor old 655 seems to have lots of problems with various components.
My motherboard hated the Crucial Technology PC3200 512Mb memory (CT6464Z40B) I put in DIMM 1 and the MSI 5600U VTD-128 video card.  Anyway suffice to say I solved the problems easily enough.  I swapped the memory and the video card  over with that in my MSI 645e Max U (the video card was a Connect 3D Radeon 7500 for info).  The 645 runs beautifully with no problems whatsoever, unlike the 655!
I've now upgraded the Radeon 7500 to a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT which works really well. So if you are having problems with a card based on an nVidia chipset (which Win XP keeps saying has drivers that don't pass the compatability test) I'd try the ATI cards.
My main problem now is with the two Western Digital SATA drives I've got setup in a RAID 0 array.
Firstly I'm getting poor disk transfer rates (I used the SiSoftware Sandra utility to benchmark the file system, and got a really poor 23Mb/s).  As an example Windows XP loads up in 1 minute 8 seconds from power on, unlike the 645 with a 80Gb Maxtor DiamondMax 9 which does it in 45 seconds - I was getting Windows up in 32 seconds after initial installation of XP!!!  Now I know I've got PC2100 memory in this machine, but it seems to have got slower since I did a driver and Windows XP update (hope this isn't anything to do with the I've downloaded).
The second problem is a bit more serious, one of my Raptor drives keeps dropping off line when I run either the error checking or defragmentation tools in Windows.  The computer shuts down and re-boots only to tell me there's been a problem (a drive has failed or disconnected) before asking for a boot floppy. Fortunately, if I delete then redefine the array I get the system up and running again, but it is annoying!  Problem is, with the 655's reputation, I don't know whether I have a motherboard, cable or drive problem.  A limited trouble shoot by swapping over the drives has ascertained which one the system alleges to keep failing, but I'm now stuck, short of trying new cables, or buying a SATA RAID controller and sticking it in the 645 to see if it is one of the drives that's at fault.
So any ideas on the drive situation?
    Best regards

Apologies for being away for a while, been busy with work & sorting out a pair of bad Raptors drives!  Thanks for the replies from Hellwolf_36 and simps.
I can now report that after I'd worked out that I'd got not one but two damaged 74Gb WD Raptor drive (one had a lot of bad sectors and the other would take over two hours instead of 20 minutes to format which is why I was getting that stop message) and I had replaced the memory with one stick of the Kingston KV400X64C25/512 DDR, my 655 is now working quite well.  I haven't got round to checking if I've got the latest C-media driver installed though.
One thing I did do though was set up my Raptor drives as two independant arrays (C: & D:) rather than RAIDing them.  This is because, I didn't want to stripe the drives just in case of another failure, plus I have more flexibility over storage space not mirroring the drives, unti lI can afford to by another hard drive or two.  Anyway they're really fast in the first place.
For this motherboard I wouldn't bother with any other type of memory other than the KV400X64C25 as recommended on the MSI website, as it's quite fast and no hassle, (can't wait to get my second 512Mb so I can go back to dual channel!!)  Only problem is that the price has gone up a little bit over the past couple of months.
So apart from this MoBo being particular about graphics cards and memory it's not too bad.  My next challenges are too sort out the center/sub problem and network  this baby.

  • Msi 655 max fisr ht ready: does it have fsb800 support?

i own msi 655 max fisr mobo, that supports ddr333 and fsb 533 as msi says. but it can handle also ddr 400 through overclocking and the bios has an option for fsb selection up to 250 mhz. according to me, this meens that one can use a cpu at fsb 800 by overclocking the mobo from the bios, even if it doesn't support the microcode of the cpu. does anyone have tested this statement, as at the time it is onlu speculation by me, as it is too expensive for my to buy new cpu and try it.
moreover, my revision of the mobo is stepping b0, thus it supports ht cpus and if it proves to support fsb 800 by overclocking, then i can keep it for a while, upgrading my system only with new cpu. i'll be thankful if anyone can provide me with some information on this topick.

What I am trying to explain is the downclocking of a DDR 400 RAM 1st to 333 Mhz then try to o/c to get DDR 400 or above, not saying that you are wrong.
Any board can support o/c'ing but it is all up to whether the hardwares that you have and their capability to do so as no one can actually determined whether or not the hardwares that you have will definately let you ends up the way it's really meant to be as there's always important facts being left out so it's always trial and error...
I have 2 of these systems running on the same mobo, but the highest I can reached with DDR 400 RAMs are just near DDR 400 not exactly 400 MHz and FSB are at near 170 quad = 170 x 4 = 680FSB... from a FSB 533 CPU. Both have different results as 1 is with DDR 333 RAMs o/c'ed to 380MHz on 2.8 B CPU and another with DDR 400MHz down to 333MHz then o/c'ed up to near 400Mhz on 2.8B CPU also...

  • Expected release if MSI 655 Max?

    hello,
when is the msi 655 max mobos suppose to hit stores. i cant find it anywhere so i take it its not out in stores yet...

    soccrstar,
I have no idea when it is going to be released, but I am 100% positive you will not find it in the nVidia/AMD/SiS Socket A Motherboard Forum!   :D
I moved your thread to the PIV forum, where it belongs.
    Take Care,

  • 655 max-LS and new HS/fan problem

I purchased a new heatsink.fan for my 655 max-LS mobo to replace the stock intel one and it doesn't fit.
A VANTEC AeroFlow to be exact. It seems like the 4 raised places in the corners of the connector on the mobo are too high and dont allow the heat sink to contact the processor.
The intel heat sink has raise area on each side to allow for this, but this heat sink doesn't. Is this an incompatibale heatsink? (I thought any 478 compatibale heatskink should fit) Or is there some modification I am supposed to make?
Hope someone tell me what i'm doing wrong.
    Thanks.

check any documentation it came with, it should fit, all the heatsinks for 478 pin p4's are pretty mcuh standard, in the way the clip to mobo at least.
