655max: video CRASH with agp 8x RADEON 9700 pro

Hi I own a 655max mobo and a radeon 9700 pro. I play games direct3d OK with agp 8x, but when I play Quake 3 Arena for about 15 to 30 min my video crash. I changed the agp 8x to 4x and everything works fine, but the framerate slow down seriously.
My system:
P4 2.6 @ 2.8
1024 MB DDR400 samsung Memory
WD 80 GB ATA100 7200 RPM
Ati Radeon 9700 pro
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
Please help !

ok i just tried to do that kaigon and the strangest thing happened, my system will not respond or start up with radeon in now... it will however if i leave the supplemental power plug off of the radeon, it starts, then gives me the error telling em to connect it, then when i connect it and hit power...nothing. pop in my old gf2 and fires right up, i dont understand this at all especially because the first time i turned my system on was with the radeon, with supplemental poower plugged in. i tried everything i could think of in the BIOS to straighten this out, but nothing, any more help would be awesome! thanks.

  • Radeon 9700 pro problem with Far Cry game

When I playing far cry at High Deatils, after 5 minutes game will crashing, and i got graphic error message
    I have Last update of official ati driver , and i tried OMEGA unofficial driver;
    but problem still running.
    Sys. Spcs.

    CPU P4 3GHz HT
    RAM 4x256 dual channel
Graphic Card Radeon 9700 pro 128MB/128Bit
    PSU 480 Watt.

Game crashing could be caused by few problems, could be software or hardware. Assuming we're looking into hardware, I suggest you run MEMTEST for your RAM and see if your RAM is defected. Other than that, I can't think of any reason than power supply. But you stated you have a 480 W which should be sufficient. It could be a known problem with ATI on Far Cry? But if this's the case, ATI should be able to deal with it via Driver Update.
If it's software, this is broad. Does Far Cry have any patch?

  • MSI KT4 ULTRA-BFISR + Ati Radeon 9700 pro = not good??

    Hello everybody!
First of all, i youst have to say that i think MSI have the best motherboards....
Here's the problem (i haven't buyed anything yet!):
I am going to buy MSI KT4 ULTRA-BFISR and ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, but i have read many places that Radeon aint working with MSI KT4-based cards! Im am going to buy an 520W Power (i aint so good in english so i hope you now what i write  :D )
I am also going to buy 2 x Cosair pc3500 xms ram... Is this one working with the motherboard by the way?
But my question is: Will the Ati Radeon 9700 pro work with this card? (i must remember to buy the 1.3 version!) I am gonna get my Radeon 9700 pro from USA, how can i now when i order that is an 1.3 card?
    Thank you for answering!  :]

I think also that even there is two drivers, that is not a reaseon why it isn't work. One time I install only standard VGA drivers, but result was that I got two standard VGA driver.  8o
First time I try without VIA drivers, then with 4.42 and 4.43 VIA drivers. Result was almost same all the time, it always crash when Nature test start, but this exist also to older mobo (Abit KT7A-RAID). Problem exits few games they lock up or stuttering. Ati demos works fine, but one time that car demo stuttering a lot, but I transfer data at same, so I'm not sure what was reason.
This moment I don't have possibilities to try Hyperion 4.45 drivers or something else, because it's my friend computer.

  • KT4 Ultra +Radeon 9700 Pro Trouble Free !

After a few months of relatively trouble free gaming with KT4 Ultra and Radeon 9700 Pro, I was shocked to find recently that my PC began to crash after only a few minutes of gameplay.   8o
Believing that a reinstall of all the relavent drivers would cure the problem, I set about trawling through the latest advice on what works / doesnt work. This I have to say was a minefield of anecdotes, mainly bad ones - as most of you guys are probably aware !
After installing drivers as 'best' I could, the problem remained the same.
It would appear that to ask for a complete list of recommended drivers is futile, since there is little correlation between reported 'fixes'. There is always someone reporting that the latest versions are causing problems.
For the moment, this tale has a happy ending cos I found that the system is getting too hot (after some months !), so with the side panel off and a 12 inch desk fan blowing inside I managed a 4 hour session with now problems. )
The purpose of the post is to highlight the disturbing fragility of these systems (which i'm sure many of you have first hand experince), both in hardware and software and to share my disbelief at the apparent lack of sustained testing that these boards undergo.
Looks like a better cooling system is in order

It's unfortunate that most of the new hardware seems to pump out heat. The ATI 9700 pro use about 100W of power on it's own. The whole system puts out enough heat to warm a small room.
I have noticed that the heatsink on the ATI card gets very hot, even though it has a fairly serious fan on it (the fan on my Sapphire card is a lot like a blue orb).
I am wondering if a lot of problems with these setups are thermal. I have the KT4 Ultra and ATI 9700 pro and it has not given problems at all.
I have (from past experience) installed plenty of cooling in my case (a full tower, that helps too). I find that the cooler everything as kept, the less problems there are.
I think that at some stage in the near future there will have to be a change somewhere. Either in heat output (reduction in power use) or cooling.

    And freezes in OpenGl,
9700 Pro freezes and locks up in EVERY D3D Game I have attempted to Play.
I have tried 4 different sets of 9700 Pro drivers, tried different versions of Direct X (8.1, 8.2, 9.0 RC0)
Have disabled Fast Write and many other bios options.
Have RMA'd for 2 different ATI cards, still getting
    The same problems.

    And so on.
Grrr, this is all giving me a HUGE migrane.

    Ouch,
I feel bad for you - I also have the same mobo and want to get a Radeon 9700 - I think I had seen you posting well on Rage3d with the same config, what happened?
What I would try next is what some users have done as a possible workaround...It looks like the radeon 9700 on the MSI KT4 likes HIGH mobo fsb - so you might want to try unlocking your 1800 and run at 10.5x166 or lower multiplier with a 166fsb...
before going 166fsb,  try right now to bump your fsb with fuzzy logic up to 140-150 and see if it changes anything and report - don't go to high passed 150 though if you don't have good air cooling - also, set at least 1.775 on the cpu vcore going after 140fsb...if this does not help, then you might want to try what I put above...
Also, increase your PCI Latency to 64 in the bios (default is 32) - this is no risk really, so try that as well...
**** Of course before overclocking with the fsb, turn off Spread Spectrum in the bios...
If you increase the fsb, you will also need to increase DDR vcore to 2.6 am recommending...I've done that with my KT4VL and worse for different purposes...
Also, you might want to increase agp voltage a bit and see if it changes anything...
You're not done yet - looks like some users were able to run the same config so you never know...
Be careful when you OC, if you're not sure - ask first and take your time
Put your ram on SPD setting in the bios when you start bumping that fsb....
If I can find the post, I will put it here but some KT4 user has to do this (increasing fsb) to get his 9700 to work great...
    Hope this helps,

  • ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (Original)

Just a little question; Why doesn't ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (Original) work properly with K8N Neo Platinum 1 and 2 ? At any of these mboards  computer hangs on a reboot. It's not a deadly issue to me due to that i use the 9700-card on a computer that always is running. But have i maybe missed something ???

I had the same problem with my 9700 Pro (built by ATI) on the K8N Neo2. To resolve it, I upped my AGP voltage in BIOS to 1.6 volts. Worked fine then. I've since switched cards to a Leadtek 6600GT and leave the AGP voltage at 1.5 volts. It works fine so I think maybe it's an ATI/MSI problem.    . Hope this helps.

  • KT6V + Radeon 9700 PRO screen corruption, sometimes ok after 2 minutes.

    Hello,
I tried nearly everything to get the vertical stripes and distortion away, but they are still there.
Its an Powercolor Radeon 9700 PRO and the card works ok in both opengl and d3d. It seems that if the computer has been some time off, the screen will get garbled and sometimes totally unreadable. Most if the time they slowly disappear when in windows, but sometimes I need to power off and try again.
I tried Crucial RAM, same problem. I sent the videocard to the shop and they returned it, because they couldn't find anything wrong. They tested on an Abit athlon motherboard.
There are no stripes when I put a radeon 9500 in it.
I have tried setting all the voltages a bit higher and changed the timing settings in the bios, but nothing helped.
There seems also a slight problem in flight simulator 2004, when changing views, the screen becomes totally garbled for a split second. The same happens when I have the radeon 9500 in.
There was one AGP setting I found which only aggreviated the garbling problem with the radeon 9700, so maybe it is just a timing problem with AGP.
I cannot change to AGP 4X in the bios, because it is dimmed. I did try 4X with smartgart, but it doesn't help when starting up.
    What should I do?
    Thanks,
    Fely

For agp4x you can try the >tape trick.

  • Radeon 9700 Pro - poor performance

I am having a lot of problem getting my new Radeon 9700 Pro to perform anywhere near its capablities!
    My system:
    MS6340M V5.0   - with latest Via driver.
    AMD Athlon 1 Ghz
    512Meg 133Mhz sdram
    3D mark 2001SE score 5300   :(
Firstly I booted up with a 230w PSU and it worked ok, but have replace with a 300w PSU which didn't make any difference.
I have reduced my Radeon quality settings to mininal, but there is no noticeable difference.
I realise that the MS-6340 is only 4x AGP, with a 'slow' processor, but I should be seeing higher frame rates than  10 - 30 FPS on Americas Army, or Unreal Tournament 20-40 FPS ?
    Any ideas?

Your problem is the 1ghz processor and your 133 Ram.  I'm running a GF4 ti 4200 64mb from MSI, not overclocked, with athlon 2200 and 256mb of pc2100 crucial.  My 3D mark scores are over 11k.  Your bottleneck is the processor.  You'd probably get the same scores with a GF3.

that is suggesting to me either your PSU is failing, or it is a Poor PSU with over-optimistic amp ratings (eg Q-Tec). it will all appear to work fine on your older board, as that has lower power requirements, have a look in my sticky Is your problem caused by your PSU? for more info and advice.

  • AIW Radeon 9700 Pro card no work

I just put together this sytem:
    Dual Opteron 242 (1.6ghz)
    MSI 580 Master2
3 sticks Samsung 512 MB ECC Registered PC3200 400Mhz DDR
All in Wonder Radeon 9700 Pro
    Antec 550 Watt TruePower:
    +5V 40A
    +12V 24A
    +3.3V 32A
    -5V .5A
    -12V 1.0A
    +5 SB 2.0A
At this point i turn on the computer and the fans go on but then the power is cut - I think by the power supply. After a while I realized how to at least keep the computer running - I unplugged the Radeon's REQUIRED power supply (via HD..CD.. etc power cord) and it worked, problem is video card wont work without that power.... So um what do i do.
Card worked on my former Abit comp which I have used for over a year....

Im going to shift this thread to memory, the All in wonder is not the problem, and the boot-up problem MSI knows about but has resisted to fix it probably because they dont know how, a workaround is to hotplug the power adapter in which is not the best or safest way but its the only way. My new case doesnt have a PC speaker for some reason so i ran a wire from a PC speaker to it... I get continous long beeps... sounds like memory problem, I've tried Samsung 266mhz 2700 (worked in my old comp), and what i want to use, PC3200 Samsung 400mhz. Both are ECC registered.
I have 3 sticks 512MB... they go in DIMM's 1 2 and 3 correct? And you only push down until the clips snap in correct? I've tried just one stick of both types in all 4 different DIMM's, same end, I tried no memory, same result.

  • Can I replace an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION with Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5

    Hi,
I am trying to help a friend whose graphics card has bust.
The old one was an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION.
I've been looking on ebay and it seems a lot cheaper to get a Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5.
Can I just swap them over?  The connectors are not identical according to the photographs.
    Thanks.

I'd like to thank everyone for all the really useful information in this thread. It helped me solve a similar problem, which I'll describe here briefly in case it helps someone else.
I have a 2004/5 dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5 and an Apple Cinema HD display linked, as I later found out, with the now defunct ADC connector. The display suddenly started to look like that scene in The Matrix, when code falls like rain down the screen, and I worked out I needed to replace my Radeon 9800 pro video card (I discovered the board was blue when I removed a thick layer of dust).
I took japamac's excellent advice and bought a Geforce 6800 Ultra from the linked eBay seller in Hong Kong, who delivered it extremely quickly, along with the cables to plug it into the DVD drive power source and a CD with installation instructions. It was only then that I realised the card had two DVI connectors and my display needed ADC (I hadn't understood the difference).
eBay came to the rescue again with a seller who had a secondhand DVI to ADC adapter, which Apple produced  when it phased out ADC about six years ago but no longer sells. It has its own power supply and looks like a large version of the Mac laptop power cables - and has added signifcantly to the pile of spaghetti under my desk.
Installing the Geforce 6800 Ultra is fiddly, and a bit scary if you're not used to delving into the insides of a Mac, but the instructions were clear and illustrated with useful photos. The video cable has four connectors. Two fit into the end of the card, the other two (linked in a Y shape) form a bridge between the DVD/superdrive and its power cable. You have to remove the DVD drive, unplug it, and then plug one of the two Y video card connectors into the DVD power cable and the other into the DVD drive itself. Then you replace the DVD drive, plug the two remaining cable connectors to the video card and ease it into the old card's AGP slot.
Finally, with the G5 reassembled, plug the adapter's DVI connection into the back of the card, plug the Cinema Display ADC cable into the adapter block, plug the adapter's USB cable into the G5 (this enables the the USB ports on the back of the display to work), and power up.
At the time of writing, the display has been up and running for a couple of hours and all seems fine.
Thanks again everyone for all your help and advice. If it wasn't for communities like this, it would be virtually impossible to solve problems with old but still serviceable Macs.

I'm glad with the video quality, however, I do experience little tearing sometimes, especially in the scenes involving panning.
The XV_VSYNC option is supposed to eliminate tearing (due to the radeon manual), but it is ignored if KMS is enabled. Try disabling KMS if you don't mind some performance reduction. The Radeon driver generally has some annoying bugs and glitches in KMS mode.

  • ATI Radeon 9700 Pro - Power Supply too small?

I'm having a problem with my Powercolor 9700 Radeon Pro. My system will simply not power when i plug this video card in (no power supply start, no posting beeps, nothing).
The 9700 pro card I have will work fine on another PC that I have with a lesser power supply and lesser cpu so I know the card is ok. My Geforce3 card works fine in the new 865PE computer, so it seems the MSI board/AGP slot is ok.
I've tried unplugging all peripherals (HDDs, CD, DVD drives) and still no power up when the 9700 is plugged into the power supply.
    My system consist of:
    MSI 865PE Neo2 FISR(v1.7)
    P4, 2.8, 800fsb
    512MB Corsair XMS Twinx (2 256MB sticks)
    2 HDD (Western Digital, 60 & 120GB)
    DVD/CD drive
    CD-RW drive
    Soundblaster live
    2 internal case fans
    360w PS
    Stats for power supply:
    +5v - 35A
    +12v - 17A
    +3.3v - 28A
    Bios settings:
    CPU BUS (FSB) - 200
    AGP Voltage - 1.5
    PCI/AGP speed (PCI clock) - 66.33/33.33
    PCI latency timer - 32
AGP setting - (if this is the 4x/8x setting, I can't find a way to change it)
APIC ACPI SCI IRQ - disabled
    AGP aperature - 64MB
    Dynamic overclocking - off
    Performance mode - slow
    hyperthreading - disabled
I've tried upping the AGP voltage to 1.6 and I have disabled cacheing.
I read that some folks have recommended setting the AGP down to 4x, although for the life of me, I cannot find a way to do that in bios or anywhere else.
Does this power supply sound acceptable? Do the 9700's draw their power off the 12v circuit?  If this PS is weak, then what +12v amp. should I aim for?
Does anyone have any ideas of any of issues that might cause my system to not power up like this?
    Thanks for any help!

    Thanks for responding Sean,
I did try upping the AGP voltage to 1.6v while only having the the 9700 card attached to the power supply.  Same result, no power-up what so ever.
The other computer's video drivers are were the standard windows vga drivers.   I don't think that really is a problem since I can't get the computer/power supply to even come on, let alone load windows.
What baffles me is that I have a geforce3 agp card that works fine in the neo2, and the 9700 works fine in another computer.  Other then the power supply, or a problem/setting with the mainboard, I can't imagine what the problem is.  The thing is, I don't want to shell out $100 for a power supply until I know that'll fix it.
    thanks
