65W 20V AC Adapter gets super hot (including new adapter replaced on warranty)

I bought a e420 in March and the 65W 20V AC adapter it came with has always ran really hot. Hot enough you can't really hold it while using the laptop while it's plugged in. When the laptop is off and charging, it's very cool. Now I just recieved a new adapter through warranty and it also gets really hot.
I also ordered my e420 with the big 9-cell battery, could that effect it? I'm also worried it has been killing my battery life as well, as it's much lower now on full charge than when it was new 7 months ago. I try to take care of the battery by almost always let it run down before charging it and don't use it plugged in unless i have too.
Would appreciate any thoughts on this. i see several random posts about hot ac adapters on the forum here but found no real conclusions.
-Thanks

Hi synovo,
May i have the machine type please? If your machine equipped with descrete graphic please disconnect immediately for safety reason, and use 90W AC instead. Anyway please contact local lenovo for further info

  • My charger gets super hot is that normal

My power cord gets super hot. I can not hold it while my mac is charging. I am worried it may cause a fire. Is this normal or a defective cord?

break in the feed lines, dont use it again, get a replacement.
be careful how you wind up your cable when done, almost ALL such occurances are due to haphazard winding up of the charging cable.

  • IPOD gets super hot while charging, won't turn off

My daughter's IPOD was getting super hot while charging. VERY hot. It wouldn't let us disconnect it. We finally HAD to, it was so hot. It now won't shut off - has the battery with the ! sign on the display.
Any ideas on how to fix this, or is this toast? thanks.

I hope they will help - we've had it almost 90 days already - I don't know how long they are willing to help. I literally have a blister on my finger - it got that hot.

  • Macbook Pro gets really hot including the power adapter

    Hi Guys,
    Good day to you all!
I just have an inquiry about my recently purchased Macbook Pro 15-inch (non-Retina). On the first 2 days of using it by just running Mac Mail, Safari, and iTunes, it's temperature is really acceptable. However, on the 3rd day, the base of the Macbook Pro was really hot, including the Power Adapter. I even noticed that the fan was making a loud noise, just like a jet engine (just being exaggerated). But the fan activity is really unusually loud. When it got that hot, I was doing Skype with my wife, playing music in iTunes, copying photos from an external hard drive to iPhoto, and using Facebook in Safari.
What I did was I unplugged the power adapter, and let the battery reach 0% until it automatically goes to sleep. Then I will be charging it while it's off as part of the battery calibration link that I've found at the Apple support page. Also, I did the SMC reset.
I was just concerned because I don't know if I'm going to ask for a one to one exchange since it's still within the 14days return period for Apple Online Store purchase.
I hope someone can give me a suggestion and other recommendations to sort out the heat and fan issue.
    Best regards,
    Aris

It could if the camera wasn't properly wired and the camera was used a lot, or if the Skype software accessed the graphics chip a lot and the graphics chip was somehow damaged. A cooling pad is not a bad idea.   But heating issues with Macs that present themselves with automatic shutdown are about the only one's I'd really get concerned about for the Mac.    The notebook is not a laptop, and a cooling pad makes sense mostly if you are going to use it as one.    Cooling it down would certainly help it regardless.   If you notice a difference in performance with it, that might be worth while checking the hardware test mentioned on my tip and taking it in for.   Do get AppleCare before it is a year old.  That way you can bring it in and get the hardware fixed up to the third anniversary of buying the machine.

  • Is the power cord box thing suppose to get SUPER hot?

mine is super hot like its hard to even hold makes my desk turn really hot too.

    Heah Matt,
When it's charging the battery it does get hot. If it remains hot after the battery is fully charged, contact AppleCare or visit an Apple store.
    Regards,

  • My Macbook Pro 15 inch gets super hot when surfing the web... What is wrong?

My Macbook Pro that I got in April this year gets superhot when I'm surfing the web, especially when I'm using Safari. Also when I'm using photoshop, which I can partly understand since it's a heavy program, but it gets so hot that it burns my hand if I touch the underneath, and that can't be right, can it? This is despite having it on a flat surface.
Also, I do not know much about RAM and stuff, but when I'm just surfing the web on Safari it uses 1 GB of the RAM memory, and I've tried with Firefox and it uses 500 mb. I don't even think photoshop uses that much when I'm editing big files. What is normal, and can that have something with my computer getting as hot as it gets? It also gets really, really loud.

    Install istat menus:
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
When the MBP gets hot, post images of both istat pro temperature display and Activity Monitor for evaluation:
    Ciao.

  • When i play dirt2 my iMac gets super hot to where the top will burn my hand is that normal

    is this normal

When your computer gets to hot it will shut down. Your numbers after playing a game for 30 minutes are about right and isn't putting to much strain on your computer.
In the summer months I have seen my iMac get above 180. If I'm compress a HD video and using all of my cores my fans kick in at over 2000 rpms.
The above image the iMac is not really doing anything... nothing to worry about. I've never had my iMac shut down from being to hot.

  • Macbook Pro 13 Getting Super Hot!

This is my second question on the communities! I'm loving my Macbook pro 13 (non retina) but I'm a big Minecraft player,  I found that when playing minecraft after about 10 or so mins the fans would get really really loud.  So I downloaded temperature monitor and watched the temps, as soon as a cracked up Minecraft my GPU (intergrated) was reaching 95c without the fans getting super loud and the CPU proximity was about 75-80c.  So... is there something I can do to improve my temperature or am I just going to have to stop doing semi-graphicly intensive tasks.  On the other hand I have enough to buy myself an iMac?  So would an iMac be able to handle it at a much lower temperature?  I know i'm a noob but I recently got a Mac and am really new to this.  Thanks in advance

Installing Mt. Lion will not increase the performance of your MBP.  actually it may slow it down.  10.6.8 is still the most efficient OS from Apple.
I suggest installing a larger and faster HDD.  A 7200 rpm drive or perhaps a hybrid.  A SSD is still too expensive for the advantages it affords (my opinion).
Backup up your data to an external HDD and do a 'clean' install.  Erase the internal HDD and reinstall 10.6.8.
From the external HDD, select what you want and leave the 'junk' behind.  This can result in a rejuvenated MBP.
Regarding the heat issue, I suggest opening the MBP and see if there is dust and debris inside.  If so clean it out.  A clean reinstall should resolve any software issues unless you have third party applications such as AV apps or MacKeeper or the like.
Additional ideas may be gleaned from this document:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3521
    Ciao.

  • The power adapter gets very hot.  Any suggestions?

The power adapter part that plugs into the computer gets very hot.  I have replaced the battery and replaced the power adapter.  It also has a hard time connecting and recharging the battery.  Is it possible to change out the plug in part in the computer and is it expensive?  Does it sound like this is what is needed to fix it?  Its about 3 years old.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hot is normal for the charger but very hot is not. If it were mine It could be that your MBP is drawing too much current. I would take it to the Apple Store and have it checked out.

  • Super HOT macbook pro

I am not sure if it's coincidence or just poor timing, but in the hour after I installed the EFI update this evening the case temperature of my MBP became untouchable and still is around the left speaker, the casing in front of the hinge and wireless area and particularly underneath, I have a mark on my leg where as I didn't realise how hot it was.
The temp of the casing has always been at a very comfortable level and I have never had to remove it from my lap, however tonight I can't even touch the bottom of the machine which is directly under the area above the left speaker (with the MBP open). so top left but underneath.
One positive though my battery is showing as fully charged for the first time since the last battery update!

I also have experienced my Macbook Pro getting super hot in the few days after installing the update, mine was in a much worse case however...
I was using the computer in a lecture, just browsing the net using the Uni wireless service with a VPN client like I usually do. No other programs were open, except probably preview. At the end of the lecture I closed the lid and put it into my bag, and left it for a few hours till my next lecture. When i opened my bag I couldn't touch the computer for more than a few seconds, and when I got it onto the bench and opened it I discovered it was dead. I plugged it into power and left it for a few minutes while it cooled down, then eventually got it to start up again. It's working fine now, but it was incredibly scary at the time.
This has never happened before, and to happen within a few days of installing the update is worrying. Particularly I'm worried it will happen again...
