660Mb AVI file: how to shrink it?

I just converted a 3 min prel file to an AVI file; but it's huge.
Is there a way to shrink it down to a usable size?

I followed your instructions and created an WMV file that is only 46MB

There are many different formats/CODEC's, and they can have many different uses. No one format does everything for every situation. One has to know, or decide, which one to use and when.

That is what this forum does best - help folk get the most out of their editing experience. One does not need to know all there is about formats/CODEC's, and one cannot, as there are changes almost every month somewhere. Many of the forum members have done almost anything that can be done with video, and can offer tips on how to do it best. That saves months of reading, and trying to take it all in. Also, much of it is highly abstract and one should not have to know it all.

This did solve my question. I'm not happy with the actions necessary to get the avi file to play, but it works. I was delivering a presentation with an embedded avi video file to a workplace audience and all of a sudden the transition from powerpoint is not "seamless" anymore, but it is better than not having the movie presentation.
Mavericks is not a big improvement for me, and this is not the first cumbersome step I've encountered. I would not recommend a leam to Mavericks unless there is something you really need. It's not all Apple's fault, as third party app providers are not keeping their product up -to-date, but we don't have computers for the fancy OS, we have it for the apps.

Please Help! I want to covert an FLV file to an AVI file HOW?!?

I downloaded a youtube video which was an MP4 and used Flash CS3 Video Encoder to encode it to an FLV file. Actually improved the quiktime file. Anyway, my question is: I want to encode the FLV file to an AVI file to put on a DVD for a friend to view in their DVD player. They don't have internet capabilities [ ] so I can't email the link.
If I can make a DVD so they can view the AVI files that would be the cats meow!!
I tried using the video import wizard to import the FLV file into Flash CS3 but can't seem to figure out what to do. I know there is someone out there that can help me.

If your friend has a DVD player that can play avi files, that's great! but most DVD players will not play .avi files, since .avi is more or less a Windows based video container format... for use on computers, not broadcast TV or DVD players.
But if you're sure that it will work, there are lots of flv to avi converters available. Just Google "flv to avi converters", for example:

Hi - i managed to get it imported into iTunes into the movies bit. I have this checked to sync - but when I do the sync, the file does not come across to the iPhone - it does play in iTunes

hi all, just bought ilife 08. looks awesome but have a problem.
all my imported clips from my digital camera are avi files, how do i import them to imovie 08?
in 06 i just imported the files but in 08 i see it's only quicktime files you can import how do i change them and can i do all of them at once?

MOV is a generic container. Unfortunately Kodak chose not the use MPEG-4 audio along with the MPEG-4 video. Actually, the MPEG-4 video content is quite acceptable to iMovie '08. It is the µ-Law 2:1 audio that iMovie '08 doesn't like. Basically, you have two options:
1) If you can manually convert the file(s) using the "Export to MPEG-4" pre-set and "pass through" the video while converting just the audio and they will be compatible with iMovie '08, or
2) You can import/drop them into iMovie '06 and let it automatically convert the clips to DV files which are compatible with either iMovie '06 or '08.
Unfortunately, the transfer of files at the Finder level is not the same as "importing/capturing" files from a camera device.

To make a 24-bit AVI file in Photoshop, go to File>Export>Render Video. Then, under File Options, choose AVI from the Quicktime Export drop-down menu. Click the Settings button. Click the Settings button in the AVI Settings window. Change Compression to None, and then choose "Millions of Colors" from the Depth drop-down under Compression.
The Millions of Colors option is for 24-bit video (8-bit R+G+B channels, 8x3=24). Millions of Colors+ is for 32-bit video (24-bit video plus an 8-bit alpha channel).

How do I move AVI files from iPhoto to an AVI player app?

I have transferred some files from an SD card on to my iPad. They're stored as AVI files in iPhoto but I can't get them to play. I've downloaded an app called Playable which can play AVI but don't know how to transfer the files in to the app.

Are you able to play them? If not and the fact that the Show File gets you nowhere indicates that those video files are missing from the hard drive. Download Find Any File and search for one of the avi files by full name including extension.

How can I export or convert to AVI file for use on PC?

I know I did this back in Jan 2009 but can't remember the process to get an AVI file that retains the sound. I thought I exported a SWF and then somehow converted it to an AVI.

*Automatically advances, using "control p" to pause (did not retain the click-to-advance feature).*
I've been reviewing third party software but they seem to all state that the won't retain the sound/builds etc.

The simplest way is to export as QT and then open the QT using Quick Time Player. If you've got pro you can export as .avi.
There are videos on youtube showing you how to upgrade to QT Pro for free...

What happens when you drag it?
Make sure the drive you are moving the files to has enough available space to receive the file:
Click on the movie file and go to File > Get Info and note the "size"
Check the drive to which you are moving the file to make sure it has enough available space: https://idisk.me.com/madisonfile-Public/web/finder-drive-available-space-and-for mat.html
Also note the format of the drive you are copying too. If it is not Mac OS Extended or FAT (not recommended unless you are taking it to a windows computer) then that may be the issue.

hi. i dl-ed the vlc player recently, but i dont know how to set it as the default player for all avi files. i secondary click on a avi file and go to others... and select the vlc player with 'always use this program' checked, but this allows only that single avi file to open with vlc. the rest of avi files are still set to open with quicktime. please kindly help me to designate the vlc player to open all avi files. thank you.

If you use the Finder and do a 'Get Info' on your target file, you'll find additional options/dialogs that will let you choose to open all similar files with the same application...check it out and come on back if you get lost in the process, etc.

When I add media from my dLink surveillance camera, the avi files always land in audio instead of the video area. Why, and how can I get them to land as visual?

I am trying to edit some of the surveillance videos taken from our dLink camera of the dogs playing when we are not home, but when I import the .avi files, it always just goes to the audio portion (of Premiere Elements 11) and nothing shows up as video. What am I doing wrong? Please know, I am completely new at this program, since I bought it for the purpose of playing with my dLink home camera videos and haven't been able to do a single thing with them as of yet due to how they are importing. I did "get media" from my Bloggie camera to see if that worked, and it did come across as a video and not just audio, so I am not sure why the other isn't working.

ATR, just to make sure you understand me, all my video clips in my folders appear as the first frame of the video clip when I view my folders as (small, medium, large)icons instead of lists, when saved as .avi files but when saved as .mp4 files, those icons display as a graphic icon of filmstrip with a musical note on it. I do have various other methods to open with (quick time, windows media, winamp or real player) but prefer real player because I like it's quick and easy trimmer that comes along with it, since so many of my videos are just pet antics where you need to clip off the boring beginning and ends of the video.
I did go on a few of the icons and right clicked, Open With, and tried quick time and also Windows Media and it did nothing as far as how the file was saved for display, and they opened the same no matter which player I used...the actual video opens and plays right at it's first frame... but it's the way it is visually displayed in STORAGE that bugs me because it isn't immediately apparent to me what it is a video of (weddings, outside the house, pet antics)... it makes me have to actually title things and read titles where before I let it just be dates because I had the visual of that first frame as a reference. Obviously, this is a problem for unedited videos only, as anything I actually work with, I do give a title along with the date of the video.
I also just realized this seems to be the way ALL videos that are wrapped in .mp4 are displayed, as my bloggie camera's videos appear the same way. Now I know why! My other videos display as .avi's so I see the frame. Puzzle solved. Guess I'll just have to learn to live with it, as it seems to be how things display with the various formats.
Now I need to watch some tutorials to learn how this Premiere program works! It's all new to me, since this is the first time I've been able load any of my videos onto it. I haven't even been able to figure out how to trim on it yet!

You should convert the media to QuickTime. Without knowing any specifics most likely the simplest way is to use MPEG Streamclip.
