6730b boot problem. Flash icon lights up 11 times. No screen. [RAM missing. ?]

Yesterday my father gave me his friend's laptop for me to look into why it isn't booting. I removed the HD, tried to reseat the RAM modules. When I wanted to remove the RAM I was in shock when I saw it didn't have any. I suppose that's an expansion slot?

The flash icon blinks 11 times till it turns white on the 12th time after which the ( i ) LED (on the right to the power button) flashes once.

The RAM is there. It was the expansion slot that puzzled me.
Another member said one of his notebook's screws caused some sort of short. I couldn't find such a screw.
Do HP notebooks work without their batteries?
I browsed the 6730b manuals and guides but there wasn't a list explaining the meaning
of how often a light is blinking.
This was the only sentence with some sort of a help.
Blinking amber: A battery that is the only available power
source has reached a low battery level. When the battery
reaches a critical battery level, the battery light begins blinking
rapidly.
Thank you for your time AttackofZaq.
Hello again!
I'll be honest, I do not recognize that blink pattern.  Most consumer notebooks made by HP follow a set pattern for the blink codes, which you can view here.  None of these match your error.
It may be a good idea to post your question on the HP Business Boards.  These forums deal specifically with Enterprise products (such as this notebook) and may be able to offer insight which I do not have.  Here is a link to the boards.
Have a great day!

  • T400 Power Problem: Flashing AC Power LED, No Battery Charge, Screen Flicker, No AC Boot

I bought a refurbished T400 less than 3 months ago. Today the power status change beeps started going off every minute or so, the power indicator light went off (while plugged in) and the battery began discharging. At the same time, the screen started flickering.
I powered down and tried draining the static by using the old trick: removing the battery and ac plug and pressing the start button 10 times and then holding on the 11th try. Didn't solve the problem.
When I use battery only, the screen doesn't flicker.
Plug in power and the screen starts flickering again, with the power LED mostly off but occasionally flickering on briefly. The battery is not listed as charging. Nothing to indicate that the power is plugged in, except for the occasional flash of the LED and the power status change beeps.
When I power down again and stay plugged in both the power LED and the battery LED keep flashing. First both are flashing green, but in a few minutes the battery light turns flashing orange.
If I remove the battery, both LEDs keep flashing. Try to power on that way and nothing happens - the LED's keep flashing, but it doesn't power on at all
Battery is new (the first one shipped wouldn't hold a charge at all; this one lists as good condition).
I don't have another Lenovo power supply to try, but the current one doesn't appear damaged or bent at all. I tried jiggling it while plugged in and there was no change.
The last thing I did before the problem began was remove a scanner from the usb port. I heard the thinkpad ports were fragile, so I am always very careful and gentle when using. I cannot see any damage to the ports.
I have about 70% battery charge left to work with, according to power manager.
My 30 day warranty is over, so I either figure this out, or I'm out the purchase price of $260., which I know is cheap for a replacement laptop, but a lot for only ten weeks of moderate use.If it's the motherboard I don't think it would be worth replacing - am I wrong? But what else can it be?
Any troubleshooting suggestions greatly appreciated. Please help! Thanks in advance for reading.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. It is a fake adapter - no lenovo written anywhere.
Now what? Should I test the unit with another adapter, or check the output of the adapter?
I hope that is the only problem, that would be wonderful. I'll update when I know more.

  • Airport Express will not stop flashing amber light; Reset multiple times; Works for a second with green light and then resumes flashing amber

I bought an Airport Express to extend my Airport Extreme about a month ago. It worked great until 2 weeks ago it started flashing amber. I reset it and set it up via airport utility and it would work for a little while, with great connection, and then it resumes the flashing amber light. Here is the error message:
"This AirPort base station was unable to extend the wireless network. Make sure the wireless network you're trying to extend was set up and is working correctly, that you entered a matching wireless network password into this device, and that this device is in range of the wireless network."
The Airport Extreme is in working condition, in range, and entered in correctly. I do not understand how it can work great for a second and then stop.
    Thanks!

Power off both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
    Wait a few minutes
Power up the AirPort Extreme, and let it run a few minutes
Then, power up the AirPort Express
If you continue to have difficulty, ask Apple to replace the AirPort Express.

  • Mac 128K - boot problems flashing x disk icon

I just recently purchased a Mac 128K off of eBay and was very excited to see that it actually worked!  Unfortunately i had to shut off my Mac 128K with ghosted icons and now when i try to reboot from the system disk all I get is the flashing X disk icon.
This happened once before but some combination of resets, unplugs, key combos did bring to it back to life, but now it doesn't seem to work.
Any suggestions on what I should try?
    Thank you,
    Matt

I know older macs use 400k DD floppies and you can format a 800k DD one sided to act as a 400k.
I have the 6 original apple disks that came with the computer (1- System Disk. 2- Guided tour of Macintosh. 3- Guided tour macwrite and macpaint. 4- macwrite. 5- macpaint. 6) System and macwrite and macpaint back up)
I inserted macpaint/macwrite into an old powerbook 150 and I was able to see the old files. Wouldn't open because it says it needed more space on the disk.
The 512k I have was made the 38th week of 1984 and it appears to have never been opened (from the tamper sticker still being intact) so it could just need a good cleaning. But from what I can tell, the X icon is usually a more serious issue. .

  • Dual-Core G5 won't boot. Flashing Red Light.

Hey Guys, I've got a 2Ghz Dual-Core G5. It's stock other than 2gigs of ram and a SATA Seagate Barracuda in the second drive bay.
Every now and then (on a fairly regular basis) I'll try to boot up the computer, I do hear the fans going but the drives don't spin up as usual, there is no chime and I get a red light behind the front panel of the G5 flashing. It flashes 7 times. After the 7 flashes it just sits there and after about a minute the fans go into airplane taking off mode.
I've been on the phone with AppleCare twice. A PMU reset did (possibly coincidentally) bring the computer back once or twice but has proven ineffective since. Typically I can either try booting the computer 30 times and it eventually works or I'll just leave it alone for a couple hours and it will boot up when I try again.
Resetting the PRAM doesn't work nor does holding option on boot up. This says (at least) to me that the computer doesn't get far enough to even look at the OS, the fault seems to be a hardware issue. The keyboard and mouse never get buss power.
Anyway, as I said it'll usually work eventually but I haven't been able to get the G5 to boot at all for the past 5 hours. Anyone had any similar experience? At this point I'm thinking bad logic board? Any opinions?
    Thanks!

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Presumably it is one of the red LEDs shown here that is flashing
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302527
The symptoms possibly don't qualify for this - but maybe with some persuasion...
    http://www.apple.com/support/powermac/powersupply/repairextension/
You could try the Apple Hardware Test
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html
    or TechTool

Presumably AppleCare suggested you take it in to the shop...?

  • Booting problem - first question mark folder and now grey screen

    Hi all,
I'm having problems with my Macbook booting.
Yesterday it worked fine until I tried to open an old Excel file, then all became extremely slow, but anyway I was able to shut it down properly, or at least this was what I thought.
The next time I tried to turn it on, a flashing question mark forder appeared instead of the apple. Then I tried various solutions I've found in forums, like turning on while holding down shift button like in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 (nothing happens), the option botton (the cursor appears, but bootcamp does not start), and command+V for verbose mode (nothing).
Anyway now if I turn it on nothing appears, neither the question mark folder, just the grey screen.
I know that everything suggests that my HD is dead, but I don't really see the reason why it should have done so...
    Thank you for your help.
    Giulia

    Hello,
"*a flashing question mark forder appeared instead of the apple."*
A flashing question mark can mean several things. One, the hard disk disk is failing. Two, it means that when you boot your MacBook, it can't find a System Folder to boot from.
Try booting while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window so you can select your startup disc.
If that doesn't work... grab your install disk and check the hard drive for errors.
Insert the installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
The fact that you can't boot in Safe Mode (shift key) is not a good sign...
*"but I don't really see the reason why it should have done so..."*
How long have you had your MacBook? Do you have AppleCare?
    Carolyn

  • Update failed... Now I have grey screen with flashing icons. Please help!

I was installing an update for Leopard and I wasn't connected to a power source. I thought it would be ok because I had a full battery. The screen was half closed over also so it may have switched off during update. Whatever happened, now my MacBook Pro won't boot up. I get a grey screen with a series of flashing icons one at a time (apple logo, circle with line through it and a folder with a question mark).
The other problem is that my system disks are in my friend's house a thousand miles away so I can't boot up from my system disks. Can anyone offer any advice please? I'm desperate!

If you can start up in target disk mode, connect your computer that works to the one that doesn't. (I'm assuming you have another computer since you can't get to the Apple Discussion Forums with a computer that won't start up!)
Use the computer that doesn't work as an external drive to the one that does.
Go to this part of the Apple Downloads website and find the update you were installing. Download it as a standalone installer, and try to install onto the external HD. If it works, problem solved!
If it doesn't work, you'll need to follow Alexandre's advice and go to the Apple Store to get working installation discs. However, you can have access to your important files whenever you want them by simply using Target Disk Mode.

  • Cold boot problem with X-FI Fata1ty card... Need serious help!

    Hey guys:
I just finished upgrading my computer. Realized that I have a cold boot problem. In order to identify the source of problem. I began the following test.
. Remove everything except, cpu, heatsink, ram, video card. Tried to boot with those devices. => No cold boot problem.
    2. Install the rest of the ram sticks (I have 4 x 52 in total). => No cold boot problem.
    3. Install the other video card (my setup is 7900gtx in SLI) => No cold boot problem.
    4. Install the Creative X-FI Fataty card. => COLD BOOT PROBLEM
Once the computer is shut down via the front power switch on the case, the computer will not boot again. To boot the computer, I need to switch off the main power switch on the back of the psu and switch it back on; then turn on the computer via the front power switch on the case. I tried the problem with and without the sound card. Whenever the sound card is installed. There is the problem. If there is no that sound card in my rig, then there won't be any cold-boot problem.
    My rig specs:
    DFI Lanparty nF4 SLI-DR Venus
AMD Opteron 65 CCBE 609 - Stock speed
    4 x 52 MB G.Skill Samsung TCCD LE 2.85V DDR 400

I need serious help. This problem is so annoying.
Tnanks and will greatly appreciate it.Message Edited by White_Hair on 0-27-200605:4 PM

The onboard sound is disabled. Unfortunately I sold the Seasonic PSU to my friend. The OCZ GameXStream is suppose to be the higher grade psu than Seasonic PSU. Also, the cold boot problem only exists if the sound card is plugged to the motherboard. I tried change different pci slot. It doesn't seem to help the problem. • Yoga 2 13" Dead? Battery light blinks 3 times but will not turn on.

Just purchased a Lenovo Yoga 2 13" about 3 weeks ago. I like the PC, but I have an issue. I was using it last night and I shut it down and left it to charge. Today when I went to turn it on the battery light blinks 3 times (1 second on, 1 second off x 3) and that's it. It won't boot at all. Have tried holding the power button for 3 - 30 seconds and pressing the reset button but all I get is the 3 blinks of the battery light (no power button light at all). Is there anything I can do? Hard reset button combo or anything like that to try? Thanks.

I'm having the EXACT same problem! The light blinks 3 times and the holding of the power button will not work either. My laptop said the battery was dying and was at 10% and before I could figure out why it wasn't charging, it died completely and the power cord will not charge it any more for some reason. I have only had this laptop for 6 months! And I replaced my old laptop (Yoga 13 original because of charging problems too!) I'm so upset about this. I will NEVER buy another Yoga/Lenovo.

l have an apple tv  2 generation please help me

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

  • Unable to boot Cisco Ironport C160, beeps and flashing amber light

At first RAID staus was showing as degraded. I tried to rebuild the RAID  but hat failed. I was able to logon and update to version 8.0 after the RAID rebuild failed.
Now when I try to boot the ironport it beeps twice and keeps on repeating every 10 seconds or so, and there is also a flashing amber light at the back and front of the device.
Suspecting that there was a problem with the hard drives i tried to restore a recent image of the Ironport that I had, hoping that the RAID would rebuild, But that is not the case. The Ironport is still unable to boot and is beeping twice as well as the flashing amber light.
Does anyone know if there is anyhting that I can do to rectify this problem?
    Thanks in advance

Amber light usually means hardware issue. You should contact TAC.
It is not clear what you did to rebuild the RAID but you should try nothing before discussing with TAC. Any attempt to do reimage could break the box for good.
At the moment you have access to the box, enable remote access and call TAC.
There is an account, named enablediag  which can be used for troubleshooting. It has the option to open remote access so TAC can assist further. The password is the same as your admin account.
    I hope this helps.

I have tried direct connection with an ethernet cable to Mac or direct to my wireless router but nothing. Just a flashing orange light. Help for a simpleton please. Have tried reseting TC, but to no avail.

Just updated from 10.6.7 ---> 10.6.8 and had the same issue. Despite having done a clean install from 10.6 and got everything back off my TC, now Time Machine can't find it!
Green light is on, ethernet cable conected, network CP says its conected but nothing. Airport Utility can't find it. Hit reset button, Orange flashing light but still no show in Airport Utility.
But I know its there, as rebooting from 10.6 SL disk shows the backups are still ok?
    Hmm, ideas anyone?

  • Problem with a Dell Monitor - stopped working yesterday, just a flashing orange light. Monitor or Mac Mini issue?

I've been using an old Dell monitor with my Mac Mini ever since I got it, however yesterday evening my monitor stopped working - however I'm not sure whether the issue is with the monitor or the Mac Mini. It just doesn't seem to respond when I try to bring the Mac Mini out of sleep. I can hear that the Mini is responding to the keyboard - I hear the right noise for pressing return on the password box without entering anything.
I've made sure all the cables are plugged in properly (power & connection to the Mini), but all I'm getting is a flashing orange light on the monitor.
I don't have anything else to test the monitor on, nor do I have access to another monitor to plug into the Mac Mini - I only have an old iBook G4, so don't have the right adaptors to plug the VGA from the monitor into that.
So before I run out and buy a new monitor, what is the best way to determine where the problem lies.

Hi, I've actually never had any issues waking this monitor from sleep, this is the first time that it has been unresponsive and I've had it for years - probably over 10! (E151FP) so probably overdue for replacement.
To be honest I'd rather not just switch the Mini off unless it's a last resort given that other than the lack of a picture everything else seems to be working ok - still hearing all the normal noises of Skype, Mail and TimeMachine etc.

  • Flashing Icon - not booting
