680 GTX Lightning Fan Question

I'm a proud owner of a new GTX 680 Lightning. So far the card seems pretty powerful, however there is one thing that is bugging me. I run an ASUS Maximus V Gene, and anytime the machine does not have windows loaded (tweaking the bios, running MemTest, basically anything outside of Windows), the GPU's fan speed seems to be at 100% or near that. This may not sound like a big deal, but who wants to listen to the fan at 100% while running an overnight MemTest? Is there anyway I can change the default fan settings? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, there is a LN2 version too but it is (like all new official versions) locked to 1.175v vgpu max. Do you want that? Alternatively I could give you a perfect unlocked silence LN2 version which I would pm you the downloadlink for if you agree that using is at your own risk.
Hi,
I am considering buying two lightnings and have a couple of questions.
1. The silence bios that you referred to, do the fans still spin backwards and just do so at a lower rpm, or do they just not do the backward spin at all?
2. Can the blue LEDs be deactivated in the bios? My case's theme is black and red so blue wouldn't go well with that.
Basically, I'd like the card to be quiet at start up and not have any LEDs shining.
Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much!

  • MSI 680 Lightning fan noise

So, one of my 680 lightning fan is making noises. It's coming from the fan, because when the noise starts i stopped the fan with my finger and the noise stopped.
Its not a cricket noise, its more of a whining noise, like the inside of the fan hasn't anymore grease in it, to oil the movement parts.
I will buy some special oil for electronic devices or some silicon grease to oil back the noisy fan.
But im asking, i can open the 680 lightning's fan, to oil it ? Or it's all sealed up ?
Someone if could answer, because i dont want to end up myself not able to open the fan and broke something.

Yeah, the GPU temp is unreal. It never wants to go above 58 degrees. With stock like said i was having 72-75
Only vrm's are a little downside, with +5-6 degrees like on stock msi cooler. This cooler is damn good, think i will keep it maybe it will work on maxwell cards too
And the fans are pure awesome, 100% speed and no sound...
Problem is they don't blow air with force like the MSI fans did.

  • Fan Question #3

Hey sorry for posting lots of fan problem, i'm here for another fan question.
right now i'm only running chrome, writing this current discussion, and the fan speed is currently 1700 rpm and the temp is 48 degrees, and i heard a bit loud motor sound from the fan, from my last post it was supposed to be a bit loud when it is used for gaming like to play TF2, is this normal or are my fans are dirty?
Sorry for my lots of fan questions, but i really need to know about my mac more.
I'm a bit paranoid about my macbook because i also use it for my school needs and it would be a pretty difficult situation for my studies if it has problems
    Thanks

13" or 15" or 17"? The little'un has one and the big'uns have two fans. I'm surprised you are seeing just 1700RPM, the default idle speed on mine is 2000. If left to its own devices, the Mac will do a fairly good job of controlling its internal temperature by revving its fan(s), but some people get nervous and try to "improve" things by adding non-Apple speed controls, that's when things start getting out of control. Like mende1 states, if things seem to be off, an SMC reset will set them straight.

  • GTX 680 Lightning Fan issue / noise

    Hi
So I've had my 680 Lightning for just over a year now and it's been working great with no issues at all, until i cleaned it. It needed a clean since it had a nice layer of dust on the heat-sinks. For starters who ever designed the card so you can't take the case off without taking the whole GPU cooler off isn't that smart,  it's a very badly designed since i can't clean the fan without voiding my warranty. ( Yes i know the fans spin up backwards to remove the dust on the GPU but over time you will still get a build up of dust on the heat-sink that needs to be removed )
Ok the issues is, when i was trying to remove the dust ( using a vacuum cleaner ) from one of the fans the plastic bit that is connected to the fan it self that holds the wires down broke, it's not causing any issues as the wires are not hitting the fans, i made sure of this. The real issue is that the other fan is making a high pitch noise / whine of sorts and it's driving me nuts( after cleaning ), the fans where very silent before the clean.
So where do i go from here? Is MSI willing to replace the fans? This issue would of never happened if i could of just taken the damn cover off in the 1st place since your fans going reverse on start up doesn't remove enough dust to not warrant a clean every once in a while.
Sorry if i sound :censored:ed but i paid over $630 Australian at the time when i bought it, it was marketed as an higher range card with the price to match it and for a higher range card one would expect to  be able to clean it when it needs.
I've used vacuum cleaners all my life to clean Case fans, GPU fans and CPU fans and never had an issue until now.

Fans or other spare parts aren't sold separately. If your vga is still covered by warranty contact MSI if seller refuses rma: >>How to contact MSI.<<
That of course means the vga needs to be rma'ed. Alternatively you can use an aftermarket cooler like Alpenfoehn Peter, Prolimatech MK26 or Accelero Xtreme III

  • Question about MSI GTX 960 fans

    Hi,
Just received my MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 2G today. I noticed that the fans sometimes spin up to ~ 600 rpm for a sec, go back to 0, spin up again ... during gaming see Afterburner screenshot.
I wonder if this is ok or if there is something wrong with the fans/fan control?

There is no vbios for a card model. There are several batches of any card model that might require different versions. If a new one is available for your card depends on the batch of card and current vbios installed. To check the card's S/N and a copy of the current vbios (saved to file, uploaded to some file hoster and the link added here) is needed.

  • MSI 780 GTX LIGHTNING QUESTION

Hi, I've just bought the 780 lightning.
Was just wondering, the lightning logo is supposed to lit up only during graphics intense programs?
Or, it will lit up even on idle i.e., in desktop?
From videos I've seen, it will lit up green on idle and changes colour during games.
Mine dosen't even lit up unless i play some games.
    Let me know..

its should light in green/blue/red depend of GPU load

  • MSI Lightning GTX770 questions

    Hello,
I am looking at the possibility of purchasing a GTX770 Lightning card, and have a few questions.
Firstly, does anyone know MSI's policy with regards to swapping out the stock cooler for a waterblock?
Secondly, are the GPUs binned for performance and low leakage, therefore coming with additional overclocking headroom, or are they simply average GPUs with the headroom used up with the stock overclock that comes on the card?
Thirdly, I heard the 680 lightning cards were discontinued a while back as NVidia was forcing manufacturers to prevent end user voltage adjustments. I also heard that MSI was deemed to be pushing the voltage and clocks of the cards too far, compromising GPU longevity and overall stability. So why is it these models have been re-released with the 770 line up, and overvolting enabled, considering it's still the same Kepler GPU? Does anyone have figures for what the voltage is on this card?
Finally, would it be accurate to say the GPUs are likely to last for less time than on cards with lower GPU clocks?
    Thanks!
    Odai.

Firstly, does anyone know MSI's policy with regards to swapping out the stock cooler for a waterblock?
you are allowed to change the cooler to a waterblock without any problem as long as you keep the original cooler and screws for the card if something goes wrong with it so long as you don't cause any Physical damage in removing the cooler...

they should have been at least been binned to work at the advertised boost clock speed but anymore frequancy is never guaranteed and just depends on how that individual GPU reacts to more overclocking from its Pre-Overclocked state it come at...

they where Discontinued as they had run there Cycle (lightning cards are always limited run due to there High out the box clocks as only a limited amount of Nvidia GPU's that MSI get will be good enougth to reach that level) and what you are referring to is Nvidias Voltage restrictions via there Green Light program that has now stopped all manufacturers from allowing manufacturers to let users overvolt the GPU's past there design limits. as for voltage limits who knows as there doesn't seem to be any data on that...

i would say yes it will last less time but its down to the individual GPU on the card to how it handles it as no 2 will be the same and of course the lower clocked cards will last longer as they aren't being pushed as hard...

  • 580 Lightning Fan stuck at 60%

One of the fans on my GTX 580 Lightning (If you are looking directly at the fans, it is the one on the right) is constantly going at 60% even when I force the fans to 30% in afterburner. It will go higher than 60% but if I try to force it any lower it will stay "stuck" at 60%. The card idles at ~31C so I don't see how temperature could be causing this. Anyone know what might be causing this?

All I had to do was stick my hand next to the fan and feel that it doesn't slow down when I operate afterburner below 60%, the other one, however, does. Furthermore the fan sometimes (by sometimes I mean maybe twice a day) will slow below 60% with absolutely no correlation to temperature or what I'm doing. I could be gaming or watching a movie and it will act on its own.
When it first started happening I could tell the case was running a lot louder than it used to (I've only had it for about a month and a half before it started this). The loud fan noise is coming from only the right fan on the 580. I think I should also mention the fan looks almost "popped out" from the twin frozr structure.

  • 580 GTX Lightning

hi all, i'm a new member and i have few questions about my card
First of all, i would like to o/c my card but i'm novice in this domain, i checked some forums and i have put these settings:
I heard that increase core voltage is dangerous for the card, but if i don't inscrease the core voltage, i can't put the card at 900 Mhz. Can you tell me if there are optimal settings for my card? How can i test them?
I tested on OCCT but i got some errors with shader 8 not with shader 0.
I would like to know also my Vcore max, how can i know? I used GPU Z sensors but  i don't understand i have 1.038 and if i increase the core voltage on msi afterburner it doesn't change on gpu z:
    My GPU Z is:
is there a new v bios or is it the latest? I checked this topic https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=148273.0 and i read "add voltage[load & max voltage] read/write support for latest and special MSI's 580 Lightning VBIOSes above version 130"

ok thx for your replies again.
So is it the latest V-Bios?
By 8 shaders i mean shader complexity optimal (8) not the default(0)
Last question, how can i know my Vcore max ? What vcore max can i beat with my 580 GTX?
    yes its latest version

Hi, I hope you don't mind me joining this thread. It saves me starting a new one.
I just bought a GTX 580 Lightning and installed it. But I got confused as to what nvidia drivers I was supposed to use. There is one at Windows Update, one on a disk which came with the card, one listed here at MSI and one at nvidia. I went with the one on MSI's website, but I'm not sure if I should have. Can anyone help me on this? Sorry I feel so stupid to ask but I don't know.
One other thing I noticed, on Afterburner my card doesn't appear to be running at the advertised speed. I'm wondering if it's because my drivers are not up-to-date or the BIOS is old. Should I just move the sliders over, or if anyone could give me some settings they recommend.
I really appreciate any help.. and sorry nems34 for butting into your thread!
everything is looks fine, what is not appear to be running at adveted speed for your eyes?

  • SOLVED: GTX 770 Fan Speed Stuck at Full

Ever since I set up my GTX 770 in my computer, the fan speed appears to be set on full constantly. I have tried to use MSI Afterburner to solve the problem, but to no avail as adjusting the fan speed curve in Afterburner seems to do nothing. As soon as it boots, the fans ramp up to what sounds like max and stay like that. I was wondering if there was anyone else with this problem and if I can fix it.
    Thanks in advance,
    muddyducky
EDIT: Turns out it was actually every other fan in my computer running at 4000rpm that caused it - managed to turn it down in MSI Control Centre :P

Do you still have a question/problem?

  • MSI GTX 560Ti Hawk Question

Just a quick question to start with, how many RPMs should my fans be doing at 100%?
I have a feeling something is going horribly wrong with my new card.

Use MSI Afterburner to adjust the fan speed - you can draw a graph and dictate how much the fan should be working against a given temp.
Is the MSI GTX 560 Ti Hawk the most problematic card.....i mean EVERYONE complains about fan noise and temps. If i had read the forums first before buying the card....i wouldn't have bought it.

  • Hard drive and Fan questions

Just got this a few weeks ago and the fan seems to be going on...then off every few minutes. I open speedfan and it shows Temp1 (most likely the GPU) at 104F then when he fan comes on it goes to 126F then the fans go off and its back down to 104F. And the hard drive makes a clicking type noise every so often. Normal? I'm trying to record the sound.

I am interested in buying a MBP. But being an XP user
i am probably going to use Boot Camp or parralels. So
first question: I have to buy an external Hard Drive,
but what is a bootable drive and what are its
    advantages?
Its a drive that will allow you to boot the OS;-)
Second, is it possible to store XP on the external
    hard drive?
Yes it has been reported on the web that you can boot into xp from an external HD drive, but the proviso seems to be that you need to have a 5GB NTFS partition on the internal drive.

  • MSI 275 GTX Lightning, overcklocking procedure

    Hi,
I will be very happy if you can help me with my problem.
I bought MSI GTX 275 Lightning, especially for games and easy overclock, but i have problem with these.
First I tried to use Utility from CD MSI Lightning Afterburn, but when is programm starting there is some error NVAPI_ERROR. ( I suppose is some Dll file missing). When I try to overclock and push APPLY again the same NVAPI_ERROR, but the Clock stay on the position which I want....... But there is not options for Sharder overcloking............. SO
I tried form to Use utility from standart MSI CD, MSI Afterburn 1.0 and, starting program is OK, no NVAPI_ERROR, When I add Core Voltage and push APPLY it stay there.   But when I try add Mhz in Core Clock, or Memory clock and push APPLY it come back again to default. Even I dont have activated scroll bar in Sharders and Linked mode is the same. NOT ACTIVE
I tried Afterburn 1.0 from CD, 1.20 from MSI site, 1.43 from Guru3d.com, is all time the same, the situation is the same. When I push apply it get back to defaults clock.

    I am using XP32bit........
I dont know if is these problem with NVAPI_DLL (btw I dont know what is it) or that I should have WIN7, or I am doing something bad........

You have to up shader freq. to unlock a new gpu core freq. when they are in non linked mode.

  • Cannot adjust R5870 Lightning fan speed

    Hi @all!
    I have a big problem:
The catalyst-center and the afterburner show me options to slow down or speed up the vga-fan - but both do not work.
It seems again as made for the reference design with one fan.
How do I control the fan speed of my brand new R5870 Lightning 2-fan card?
    Any ideas?
    THX!
    EH

    Okay. THX so far... :-(
I want to get that damn thing silent!
    What about watercooling this card?
As far as I know, I need the plate (80,-) a water pump (40,-) a radiator (30,-) aquabox (40,-) and so on and so on... right?
So should I take the pc and walk to the next pc-shop to get the right parts?
Any better ideas? I still have the possibility to return the card to get a more quiet one - but that's a bad feeling... :-)
