6800gt @ultraspeeds... what???

hi guys,
this is my rig :
a64 3500+
msi neo2 platinum
2*512 kingston 3-3-3-8 dual ddr
msi 6800GT
Herolchi 475W
the thing is : my damn 6800 won't o/c!
i hear everybody here o/c their gts past ultra speeds but this is almost impossible for me!
every time i try core past 389mhz and mem past 1080, 3dmark 05 freezes completely.
And what's more weird, i don't think it's a temp issue, since right now (385/1079), it idles
at 49 degrees and after 2-3 hours of heavy gaming (nfs underground2 for instance) it's
never above 62-63 which is quite normal i think.
have i just been unlucky?
some other guy with the excact g.xard reached 425/1220... i mean WHAT?
the stock cooler seems good, nice-copper-one.
any thoughts?
(fast-writes is NOT an issue, already checked)

Hi there,I had the same problem with my MSI 6800GT ,i know u said FW was not an issue but i was getting freezes in 3dmark/games and other weird stuff, was only trying low oc,s 380/1060 so tried disabling FW in bios settings and now it oc,s past ultra levels and its stable, read somewhere that there maybe a nforce3 FW issue

  • New K8N diamond plus questions please help.

Hi all well i am new to this msi site and am thinking of buying the new MSI K8N Diamond plus motherboard, the problem i have is that i have been a fan of ASUS and have had there last 3 SLI motherboards of which i have not been happy with.
Well i am totaly into overclocking and have an Opteron 165, balistix ram, 600w Enermax PSU, 2x Gainward 6800gt's,
what i am looking for is a motherboard that does what i says it will do, yes the asus a8n32 was a great motherboard but has a limitation on the voltage if useing the new E4-E6 stepping cores of which would only give a max voltage of 1.58v of which the asus spec said 1.76v.
What i am asking you chaps is is this a great motherboard, can you play with all the coms settings without any limitation, or do you think that the DFI motherboard is better.
If you can let me have some info on this motherboard that would be great, as i can not seam to get any reply from MSI about some information.
what i am looking for is what is the max CPU voltage and is there any limitation on it for some chips.
what is the max voltage for the ram
what is the max voltage for the chipset.
any help on this would be great.

there is no mobo that alows 4V for the memory. i think the DFI goes up to 3.4V and you can use a DDR Booster to get to 3.8V. the only mobo that is capable to pass 3.3V is the DFI since you can have the choice to select from which rail the memory will be powered (the 3.3V or the 5V). you don't have that option in any other mobo.
Hi thanks for the mail but i have just copied this from msi about this motherboard, see below.
    1.Adjust CPU FSB Frequency:
You can adjust the desired "CPU FSB Frequency" by using "+,-" key. The default value of AMD Athlon™64 is 200MHz. The maximum value is 450MHz.
    2.AMD Overclocking Configuration (CPU Ratio):
If the CPU is Athlon™64 FX series, the ratio range is from 4 to 25.
If the CPU is Athlon™64 series, the ratio should be set according to its model number. For example, the ratio range of 3000+ is from 4 to 9, and the 3200+ is from 4 to 10.
    3.Adjust Extra CPU Voltage:
This is for adjusting CPU voltage while overclocking. Following the CPU default value, the maximum is 1.8V. The interval is 0.05V.
    4.Adjust DDR Memory frequency:
The Memclock is the major part which has four different frequencies to match many kinds overclocking memory modules. The memory frequency settings includes DRAM/FSB=1/2, 2/3, 5/6, 1/1.
    5.DDR Memory Voltage:
This is for adjusting memory voltage while overclocking. K8N Diamond Plus has a special design. We use jump to distinguish two level arrangement of voltage. In this way it can get maximum 4.1V for overclocking modules. As you can see the below pictures, the left one is the standard mode when jump hat is located at the top postion. The default value is 2.5V, and the maximum is 3.2V. The interval is 0.05V. As the right one, it is overclocking mode when jump hat is located at the under postion. The default value is 3.2V, and the maximum is 4.1V. The interval is 0.05V.
What i am asking is there any limitation on the cpu voltage like the asus a8n32 as this had a max voltage of 1.58v due to it having a limit put on it by recomendation of amd.

I recently bought a graphics card which is the MSI 6800GT...after i browse aroung the net i found out that MSI has flawlessly manufactured the card by putting an NV40 gpu instead of NV45...

    Confusing & Confusion
What should i do....Should i go straight away to Cycom and ask them about replacing my cards....or should i contact MSI distro here in Malaysia...which is just to be Enlight....

    antonio_zth,
MSI sells over a million Vid Cards a Month. There were a total of 350 vid cards with the wrong Pipelines and Vertex Units. I had one of them, so that only leaves 349 of them out there. By now all the Vid Cards in question should have been sent in to MSI and swapped out.
I would run Riva Tuner and see how many Pipelines and Vertex Units your Vid Card, if you have 16 Pipelines and 6 Vertex Units, then you have the correct card.
    Take Care,

  • Nforce 3 Platninum and 6800GT works fine for a week or so then fails to boot.

    Hi everyone,
I have read pretty much all the posts on the forum, but none show the exact same problem as mine, as far as I can see.
I have an MSI Nforce 3 plat mobo (with latest BIOS), which is turning out to be the worst investment I ever got.
    My specs are as follows:
    2x512MB Kingston ram
    AMD 3.5
    pixelview 6800gt
    raptor HD
    thermaltake 480W PS
I upgraded to the nforce 3 for the 939pin socket for my AMD chip.  I had constant freezing, so my old memory I had to chuck and buy 1GB of Kingston ram.  Using my old ATI 9800pro my system was stable. Absolutely no crashes.  I decide to buy a pixel view 6800GT AGP card to upgrade.  Cool.  Plug it in, reload windows (latest WHQL drivers from NVIDIA).  Everthing is fine, for about a week.  Then bad things start to happen.  The symptoms are:
Turn machine on, BIOS check all ok, machine does DMI listing. As soon as the "starting windows" screen comes up, the video display goes corrupt.  Either white, with diagonal lines, or windows XP logo all over the screen several times and corrupted.  The machine does boot into windows, but the screen is blank or corrupted.  I hear the windows startup sound click in.  Press the power button, shut down the machine.  Reboot.  It usually comes up fine.
I thought initially it was the graphics card, so I swapped it out. Reloaded windows. All works ok for about a week. Then, again same problem.  Windows event viewer shows no errors.
My question is this: can this be fixed or is it hardware incompatibility.  If so, can I fix it tweaking the mobo settings.  I have tried the AGP fast writes, didn't work.  This looks like intrinsic Hardware incompatibility, but if it is this, why does it work for a week without any problems, and then it gets worse and worse and worse.
If this is a hardware problem, what is the cheapest way to get out of this.  Is MSI nforce 4 any better or do I ditch pc gaming all together.  I have been gaming from XT days, and I have to say, I am totally disheartened with this whole mess.  The one thing in my life that I do want control of is a bootable, reliable PC to relax with at the end of the day.  At the moment, I just shed tears as it is turning out to be a costly nightmare.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  My friend has offered to buy the 6800GT from me, and give me my old 9800Pro back.  Should i do this???
    Thanks guys
    John

    Hi Makisst,
    Thanks for the reply.
    System specs are as follows:
    AMD 3500 64
    MSI Neo Platinum (nforce3)
    Creative labs Audigy2 pci card
    Pixelview 6800GT AGP 256MB
    Kingston DDR400 512Mb PC3200 400Mhz x2
    MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM 939 pin  (MS-7025-010)
    Western Digital Raptor™ 74.0Gb 10,000RPM SATA150
    Themaltake 480W power supply.
I have 2 extra ATA HDs, which I have not added to the system to rule those out.
I have a DVD player (bog standard MSI) and a CD burner (not plugged in so as to rule this out).
The only thing I have not tried is removing the sound card (audigy 2).  What is driving me absolutely nuts is that the machine works fine for a week.  Then there is a slow degrade.  First boot, scrambled screen, second boot fine.  Then a few days later, it will only boot the thrid time around.  Then after 2 weeks, it won't boot at all.
I have tried this card in another persons machine (the 6800GT that is), and it boots fine.
I can honestly say I have not tried playing with the BIOS settings except for AGP fast writes, as it was working fine with the Radeon 9800 pro.  I have done two full HD formats, and completely wiped the Raptor twice now.
I shall have a look at the BIOS settings you recommended tonight, and see if they make a difference.  I am, to be 100% honest, a little bit scared of playing with the BIOS settings, as I really don't know what I am doing.  I see that the ppl I bought the machine off have set timings in the BIOS to 3-3-8-3 (I think, I will confirm this tomorrow), so should I leave these settings?
I shall also remove the Audigy 2 card and see what happens.  System properties show machine has no conflicts though.  It is almost like the card is not initialising correctly.  Why this happens only after 1 week though I have no idea.  This is the third time it has started happening after 1 week.
The only extra software loaded is Norton, Win XP SP2 and directX9.  I really have not had it stable enough to start loading extra software.  I am getting too tired after reloading for the third time in 6 weeks.
I will let you know tomorrow either way.
    Many thanks
    John

  • Geforce 6800GT won't install properly

I apologize if this is not the relavent section for this topic, but all I seem to read is that my problem just be due to the motherboard or the BIOS.
I have tried to install both a BFG and an XFX Geforce 6800GT card, and both of them have given me issues. I tried the BFG card first and sent it back when no support was given. I'm now in the process of trying to make the XFX card work. Please find relavent system specs in sig (the graphics card there is my old card, of course).
When I install the card/drivers and reboot, my display is distorted with colored, vertical lines of pixelation. My LCD monitor sometimes goes black for a few seconds then displays the screen again. Sometimes it goes thru its digital/analogue source seek randomly, then reboots. The Windows error report message comes up pretty frequently. I have the latest BIOS for my MB (AMI v.1.07), which I installed this morning before installing the card. I have the latest chipset drivers (they're from like December of last year so...). The card is one that comes with just one power plug connector, and I have a cord directly from my PSU plugged into it. I am not experienced with IRQ, though I have heard that this card and other recent graphics cards require you to assign VGA to IRQ in the BIOS, which is not an option in my BIOS.
I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'd really like to get this card to work and crank up some games today  .  Any help you can provide is appreciated.
    Thanks
    Melody

Sorry, but how high should a PSU be, these days?
nVidia recomments a good quality 480W PSU for this card!!!!!!!!
So the Enermax 465 will do just fine as it has plenty amps (33) on the 12V line.
110W means that it takes approx 10A from the 12V line alone, but the CPU and other stuff want some juice too...
On the Powmax there is only 15A left for the rest of the system, that's not enough...

  • What power supply????????---Help!!!!!!

Building new system,,,,,K8Nneo4 platinum SLi----with two 6800GT's and AMD64 4000+,,,,,WHAT POWER SUPPLY DO I NEED?????

Actually, you really do need to do your homework first. Go to takaman's Power Supply Calculator and figure out HOW MANY AMPS YOU NEED ON EACH RAIL. Watts mean nothing as many manufacturers make distorted claims anyways. And they also test their PSU's at 25c. At 50c many of those cheap 550w PSU's output will actually drop to something like 250w!! Check THIS out.
Here's the [H]ardOCP list of Un-reccomended and Unscrupulous Power Supply Companies:
    Achieve
    Aerocool
    Allied
    Aspire
    Codegen
    Coolmax

Thermaltakes (low end ones, butterflies are fine, and some enlight models, the TT category depends)
    Turbo
Ultra-X (yes, the pretty looking ones, they are made by a low-quality Chinese company that starts with "Young". Can't get much more generic than that!!!)
    X-superalien
    X-treme
syar2003 gave you the best info you could have regarding a PSU for a SLI system. My personal recommendation? PC Power & Cooling Turbo Cool 510 SLI. The Enermax EG701AX-VE would be a good choice also, but for $25 more the PCP&C TC 510 SLI is definitely the top choice.
Look at it this way, you're going to have to spend $200 for a good SLI PSU anyways, why not get the best. I mean, it's just the most important component in your computer. If you're gonna spend $2000 - $3000 on your new Rig, do you really want to risk all that valuable hardware on some cheap PSU?
Anyone could buy that cheap PSU for their sweet new SLI Rig, but, they better have a fire extinguisher and $2000 handy when they've OC'd their new AMD64 4000+ and those two sweet 6800GT's and their cheap PSU bursts into flames.
We all like to get the best for as little as possible, but the PSU is NOT the component anyone should want to cut costs on.
Go over to The [H]ardOCP Power Supplies Forum and read the Stickies there.
Tons of extremely valuable info the on PSU's. Good Luck & Good Hunting.

  • Can't clock 6800GT with success

Problem I have is that when I up the clock on my GT, even just a fraction on mem and core I get occasional(often)freezes and sometimes the desktop is garbled.
It's done this on my Nforce2 and now on the N3, basicly on completely different rigs, It runs sweet as on the default clock speeds(21700 3dmarks on 01 all stock)
Would really like to overclock it, I'm taking into consideration that I haven't had a format for quite a time now and never clean up after my self so could be software related, USING the 71.22 from msi and have used live update for every driver pack on this format, don't want to format and find it's still a prob thou.
Could be that there isn't enough Thermal paste on the GPU or is it a pad.
May try coolbits, guess I'll need a driver cleaner and the latest reference drivers
Never really overclocked the card hardly as this has been a persistent problem from day one but at stock no problem.
Anyone got any Ideas as what what might be at fault
Please god, I Just want to overclock it.

    Hi,
By any chance, did you overclock 2D timings, instead of 3D timings?
Desktop garbling should not be happening regardless of how high you push your 3D clock, coz it's purely 2D.  This happened to me when I first started out ocing my (stunted, see thread) 6800GT.  I thought I had to synch 2D and 3D timings, so I move the slider on the 2D clock and oops!
Pick up a 6800 overlock guide, use Rivatuner and try again.

  • Overlay shows blank screen on 6800GT?

I have never been successful with overlays. I'm using ForceWare 84.12 on GF 6800GT. Using Media Player Classic to playback any kind of video files. If I set to playback with Overlay, I will get only blank screen on the single monitor I have. Every other playback mode works fine - system default, VMR7, VMR9 etc, except Overlay where I got nothing. There is no complain or error message popup for selecting Overlay though. But I just don't know how to get my video playback appear on Overlay settings.
    Any help?

Video overlay has nothing to do with codec. It's a technique graphics card use to organize full-motion video content into a frame buffer, then feed it to GPU's RAMDAC, and to send it to the computer screen. The good about video overlay is it doesn't require CPU processing power (if graphics card support it). If this frame buffer is being fetched by VMR (DirectX), then certain processing power will be needed.
NVidia cards surely support it. But somehow it doesn't really work out what I wanted it to be on my system.
Driver could be a big suspect, but I am using a full WHQL compliant ForceWare driver.
Or it could be something very wrong with my OS

  • What Next - I Gots The Itch?

    Hey All...
Alright.  A few months ago I went with my AMD64 rig (as specified below) and have not had the same number of problems that I see some other users have had.  Any crashes or lockups I have encountered have been linked to AGP fast-writes, and o'cing my GPU.  I have not even touched o'cing my CPU yet, as I am fine with stock speeds right now.
Thus, the question of the hour is what next?  I feel that my rig is missing something that would increase it's performance (substantially), and just can place my hand on it.  Any thoughts on what I can do to get that extra level of juice?
Now, before I get flamed, I really would like thoughts that are not based on overclocking the cpu.  And since I am not providing you with the details of any synthetic benches I may have run, I am more pointing this question to any component that can be added to make it the best it can be.
Any thoughts/comments would be greatly appreciated.

You appear to have a pretty decent system as it is - my advice would be to enjoy it as it is (in 4 or 5 years it is going to be obsolete anyway - such is life with PCs)
You know, part of me (a BIG part) knew that going in.  I was just grasping at straws.  I am hesitant in o'cing this puppy because of the failures I have had with the P.O.S. PNY 6800GT I have in it.  Unlike many others who have purchsed PNYs version of this GPU, I have not been successful in achieving the same results as everyone else.  I can barely get to 370/1040 without hard crashing/locking up.  My temps are fine (have NV Silencer 5 w/AS5), and still hard locks.  I even flashed the bios on the card to up the voltage to 1.4.
Due to that, I don't want to start jerking around with ocing the CPU/Memory because of the luck I have had, and the $$$$ I have spent.
Anywho, I am off my Whine Podium.

  • [GeForce 6] PC Locking up with 6800GT card

Running a 2800+ XP Athlon processor overclocked to 3200+ spec on an Nvidia Nforce 2 motherboard by Abit. 1gig of 3200 ram.
Was running an ATI card and had zero problems with this configuration. I've since gotten an MSI NX 6800GT TD-256 card.
My pc is locking up while playing games. After roughly 10 minutes in Warcraft 3, and 20-30 minutes in CS: Source, my screen gets covered in a weird pattern of small green pixels inside what look kinda like rectangular squares. Hard to explain, but the artefacting is different between the two games and always looks the same.
The pc needs to be rebooted when these lockups occur. There will be no artefacting present on the bios or in windows after these lockups (Bios and Windows usage gives me no problems)
Temps are fine, 47 degrees idle. I haven't checked the temps during gameplay, but if there's no artefacting if I reboot after a lockup, I presume theyre ok?
My psu is an Antec NeoPower which has twin 12V rails. Should be adequate for running the card (it has a PCI-Express power connector)
I upgraded from a chieftec psu which was giving me the exact same problems in the exact same ways, so I don't believe it's the PSU. The card is on it's own independant power cable.
Using the latest Omega drivers, but the problems occur using the latest Nvidia drivers also. I've made a clean WindowsXP install and the problems occur there too.
Could it be a motherboard setting? I've had this problem with Fastwrites on and off. Arpeture size is 128 megs. AGP 8x set. The card isn't overclocked at all.
I really haven't a clue what else could be causing this. If I've left out any important information, let me know.
    Thanks

    I'm getting it again
Warcraft III, the screen goes all whitish patterned. I can still move the cursor for a few seconds, and then it locks up the whole pc. Whatever sound was playing just as the problem occurs will repeat itself until the lockup happens.
I've turned off everything in the BIOS that I can think of that might cause this problem (Spread spectrums and whatnot)
Does this sound like a hardware problem with my videocard or something else? I'm hoping its not the card...
One thing maybe worth mentioning..my motherboards Northbridge fan is a bit dodgy. It needs manual prodding with my finger to start it on bootup, so I'm not entirely sure if its rotating at it's normal RPM. Looks to be going fast though. Could this be an issue?
EDIT: I'm using the Soundstorm audio on the Nforce 2 board. Would that have any relevance to the AC97 issue?

  • Graphics drivers for a 6800GT oc

What forceware drivers should i use? ive been having MAJOR problems lately, and its too random to tell whats causing it, so im going to hope its the video drivers right now and go from there.

After messing with many beta versions i found the new Nvidia 71.89 official drives to be best for me. Before i was using the beta 71.20 which also worked fine with good results.
Doh... Sorry, i just read the post through again and see you have the BFG 6800GT OC card, mine is not the BFG version although i can't see it making much of a difference.

  • Geforce 6800GT AGP Setting

Can anyone test (3DMark and Doom3 would be good) for me a 6800GT when it's set to AGP4x and then in AGP8x mode? Is there a big difference? I wan't to buy the MSI 6800GT card.
    I have:
    MB MSI 845E Max (AGP 4x), P4 2.4GHz (oc 3.05GHz), 1GB RAM, HDD Maxtor 80GB 7200 and WDC 80GB 7200, Teac CD 540E, Plextor DVD-R 708A, MSI Geforce 4 4400TI 128MB, SB Live.
Would be a 450W power supply good for this config? I think i have a 350W supply now.

Hi there,i use a thermaltake purepower 420w supply its hardly a highend model and my msi nx6800gt runs fine and even overclocks to 410core 1112memory ,while these devices are attached 2xhds,dvd-rom,dvdwriter,5case fans,athlonxp2800+ cpu,so you don,t really have to spend lots of hardearned cash on a highend powersupply, just my opinion and good luck on what ever you do.

    I've a 6800GT 256Mb from MSI, and is just GREAT !!
Well my last vid card was a Gforce1
However i think it's great to see the core temp of my little baby but ...... wow 50° at idle
Reading some reviews around the net about others 6800Gt looks like a standard temp but still seem a bit too high for just idle , isn't it ?
I wanted to know if anyone have a better temp on his card or have changed the cooling system and if so, what benefits ?

Congratulations for the case, a really nice one.
I'm sure that vantec vga cooler blows alot of air on you gc
Maybe you're right, i shouldn't worry too much considering the 120° cap but .... is there a way to log the core temp , for example, while running an heavy bench ?
Just to see how much get close to the 120 .... let's say 100 °   cap.
I just found a great tool for monitoring alot of temp sensor (hdd, cpu,mb). I think it also monitor the ambient temp from the gc, but not the core

  • 6800GT problem

    Hi,
my PoV 6800GT doesn't have a good performance can this be due to it is sharing his irq with the onboard network card?
Also my sound card is making noise when i move my USB mouse can this also be because it has it irq shared with the USB controller?

The answer to your question is probably not.  For the 6800 GT, most likely your power supply. which you didn't list, does not have enough +12V amps.  You power supply should be rated for at least 20 amps on the +12V rail.  If it isn't, stuff can happen.  Also, make sure that you have connected the supplemental power connector to the edge connector on the card, otherwise it will work badly if at all.  If the power supply is good and is connected correctly, then you might have a bios setting incorrect.  The things to look for are the primary vga setting.  For some odd reason, the BIOS on the NEO Platinum resets itself to PCI instead of AGP when you flash.  This is stupid since 99.9999999% of people use an AGP video card as their primary video card these days.  The next thing to look at is the AGP aperture size.  It is a good idea to set this to the amount of RAM on the card.  In most cases, for a 6800 GT, that would be 256 MB, but there are some 128 MB cards out there!  The PCI settings should be left at auto unless you know what you are doing.  It is best to let the BIOS/Windows handle the interrupt assignment.  If you mess with this and do it wrong, your system will not work right.  At this point in time (as opposed to the old DOS days) it is best to leave it to the machine to do the right thing.
If none of this works, post again and maybe there is something else we can try.
