694D Pro-A (MSI-6321) issues

Just bought a 694D Pro-A v. 1.0 in retail box off Ebay.  There are several confusing issues that I would like to ask about.  This board has the "B" chipset version (so there is no separate ATA-100 chip),  no RAID, and onboard sound.  Running Dual PIII 700, 1 Gb SDRAM, 2 WD HD on primary IDE, and a Matsushita DVD and TEAC CD-ROM on the secondary IDE.  GeForce MX2 64Mb AGP graphics card.
1)  The BIOS says v. 3.3 01/30/01 but the MSI website says that this version is only for the Pro-AR or -AIR?  But this board is NOT RAID equipped!
2)  The system will not boot from a CD-ROM, even with it configured properly in the BIOS, where the same CD will boot on my other computers.  I found a note somewhere that says that some boot scriptors have problems because some older BIOS versions have a bug with regards to booting from CD.
3)  I tried to FLASH the BIOS to v. 3.7 using an NTFS boot disk and following the appropriate directions on the website for non-FAT drives.  The FLASH utility started, and allowed me to save my old BIOS, but then nothing happened.  When I manually rebooted the old BIOS was still there.  There is no BIOS protection in the BIOS itself, and the pins that are supposed to be on jumper J5 (per the manual) to lock/unlock the BIOS do not exist!
4)  The system will not restart, either by pushing the reset button or doing restart through either W2k or XP.  This also happened during set-up of those systems independently.  The only way to get the system to boot is to completely power it off and on again.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

No luck flashing the BIOS with the new boot disk.  I am able to get the flash utility to work, but it comes up with a message saying "flash type - unknown flash" and then when I try to install the BIOS it says "error message - unknown flash type"
I also tried the LiveBIOS auto-update, but it could not find a proper BIOS, despite the fact that the MSI website says all MS-63xx boards are supported, but there are not MS-6321 BIOS listed?
Is it even possible to flash this BIOS?

  • 694D Pro-A (Onboard ATA100)

    Hi!
    I have an 694D Pro-A (Onboard ATA100)!
    My w2k configuration was:
    P.Master - 40GB
    P.Slave - CDROM
    S.Master - 160Gb
    S.Slave - 160Gb
    ATA100 - empty
    (all HD are maxtors)
    I have the latest BIOS.
I didn't managed to install the 160GB drives on the ATA controler (neither as Boot nor as storage devices, true pitty, i bought em for this purpose!).
I really loved to have em installed there but with w2k I just couldn't boot afterwards!
(first I installed the OS-w2K on the 40 GB hard disk, then i used maxtors big disk enable utility, after that i connected the 2 160GB disks. If I try to install 'em on the ATA100, i won't boot, so i place em on the second IDE)!
Now I am considering upgrading with a new hard disk [between 200-250GB i do need the space]!
I would prefer using it as boot disk on the ATA100 controller, i f there is some way doing so, but i am afraid that this might won't work for me either this time!
I also wish to use Mandrake 10.2 as OS.
Do you know if presents the same limitations about the 137GB HD barrier?
Do you think i might find some trouble using the disks?
Can you provide me a more healthy hard disk setup, in case you think i place the disks in wrong positions?
    Please I need your help!

Finally my MSI 694D Pro A (MS-6321) full functioning!
I read almost everything on the net about Bios settings, irq's, hard disk's, LBA 48bit etc etc...
After hours of testing and moving pci's on the motherboard.
After a great loss [my Deskstar 80GB, used as external device, is dead, excessive mechanical shock (crashed, falling from the case to the pavement  )]
now i can say that the problem was IRQ conflicts!!!!!
I assume that this was making my system to halt and even produce corrupted files!!
The motherboard's promise controller shares the same IRQ with the multimedia device (audio on board DirectSound AC'97)!
So when the sound is enabled via bios the controller recognizes the hard disks as PIO MODE 4!!!!
I also used to have a USB 2.0 pci controller which was sharing the same IRQ [total 3 devices with the same IRQ] no matter in which PCI i was installing it!!
All this make the promise controller NOT to work well
    Solution
I bought an extra pci terratec audio card [18euros] and now everything works just fine!!!!!
I disabled the audio from the bios!
THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE MORE THAN 2 HARD DISKS ON THE PROMISE ATA100 RECOGNIZED AS ULTRADMA 5[AND NOT PIO MODE 4]!
It seems that only the audio on board creates THIS problem with the promise controller when shares the same IRQ with it!!
Sharing IRQ with my pci USB 2.0 card doesn't seems to bother THE PROMISE!!!!
For now i am a happy user of linux Mandrake 10.2
    and from the console

but i guess this is a linux question
I do assign an IRQ to my VGA card, do you thing that this is useless?
Anyway, i am really happy about the all thing
my hard disk's are almost full with data [all with the same as precaution]
with NO corrupt files and i feel
secure enough to empty 'em and start using them!
some photos, sorry for the bad quality
to my "new machine' based on the msi 6321
to msi's manual that lack's of everything, but most important...correct and valid information to setup the board correctly.
On my next buy the first thing i am going to check is the manual online...just to be sure....
thank you for your time Grayone
    Till the next time!
PS my promise controller still recognizes the hard disks as 131GB as you can see on the last photo but now it recognizes as ATA100 [UDMAmode5]!!!
linux doen't seems to bother about it, i am not sure if this is true also for windows...

  • WinXP problems with MSI 694D Pro v1.0 (MS-6321)

Greetings, i have some serious problems with WinXP install with my "brand new" MSI 694D Pro, PCB Rev 1.0 motherboard.
Running with one cpu is just fine, installation and inside windows it's completly stable after chaning a few leaking caps.
However, if running with both cpus I have serious problems installing as well as running Windows.
Once I manged to get in, and then it was 100% 2xPrime95 stable for 6hours.
Latest BIOS, no issues with ram etc.
I narrowed the problem down (I think) to the ACPI identification of the secondary processor on startup. Is this a known problem to v1.0 PCB's of this board, is there a workaround, can one set the ACPI ID manually.
I'd prefer to run WinXP Pro SP1 on this computer, and sure hope I will not have to be forced to Win 2000 Pro for this issue.
Does anyone have any tips or workarounds?
    Specs;
MSI 694D Pro (MS-6321) with latest BIOS that's supposed to fix WinXP issues
    2x512 133mhz SDRAM doublesided
    2x866/133 256mb cache Coppermine w matching stepping
    More then enough cooling
    HEC 400w PSU
A handfull of HDD's and a few optical units.
WinXP Pro (early release without any SP on install), don't recall build atm sorry.
So far I have tried with diffrent ram, diffrent BIOS's, diffrent PSU's, inside and outside the case, Memtest86 error free, a horseload of diffrent BIOS settings, minimum hardware installed and most things in diffrent compinations.
I'm a hardware geek and is well versed in those checklists so I don't think I have missed anything and is pretty convinced that the other hardware is working as it should, I'm pretty lame on OS handeling thou.
    Anyone?

Everything was just fine once I was in WinXP, thats where I ran Prime95  ... But I only managed that once, I havn't managed to replicate that.
That once I installed with once CPU and the added then second one then rebooted. Realy wierd that I can't replicate that...
    EDIT;
    Some clarification

  • Dual CPU prob w/ MSI 694D Pro-AIR v1.0 (MS-6321)

I am having some difficulties with my MSI 694D Pro-AIR V1.0 (MS-6321). It will only boot up when one processor is installed (in CPU1 Socket).  Both CPU's work in CPU1, when only one processor is installed.  I haven't powered up the machine in over a year, but everything worked fine then.  I have tried different video cards, etc...  When I have two processors installed the DLED light alternates green from 3 to 4 continuously.  What does this mean?

Re-flashing BIOS does not seem to help the situation.  I am experiencing the same problem.  If I set the FSB manually to 66/83/100 with both processors installed the board will start POST and then freeze after memory is tested and '2 CPUs' is printed on the the screen, I am not able to get into the BIOS.  Motherboard works great with one processor (Either one).  I don't get it.  All of the other components check out (both processors, memory, and video adapter tested in a ASUS CUSL2-C), there MUST be a problem with the motherboard.  I am sending it in, unless you have any other suggestions.

I just got an old 694D Pro to play with but it came without manuals or a battery.  Can anyone tell me what battery is supposed to be on the board?
Addtionally, anyone with any advice on building a dual 1.0G processor Windows or Linux OS or any hurdles to ocvercome would be greatly appreciated.

  • Msi 694D pro and newer Graphics Cards

    Hello.
    I have a MSI 694D pro MB with 2x P3@1Ghz, 1.5Gb ram (2x512(pc133) + 2x256(pc133), a raid stripe of 2x120Gb WD hdds and a 400W PS running Win2k SP4.
    Problem:
I had an Matrox G400 w 32 MB ram and I bought a new GF 6200 card since now even tbs games are 3d and the matrox couldn't keep up.
The GF 6200 is agp 8x but it sais it works well on 4x.
When installed, windows will freeze at startup unless i deactivate "enable agp 4x" from bios, in which case everything works fine except i have NO 3D hardware acceleration...  Wich sucks since it makes the gf 6200 a rather expensive 2D Virge lookalike with 128mb ram...
I tested the gf 6200 on a different system and works fine, even on a agp 4x only board (a kt333 msi).
I also put in a radeon 9600 pro borrowed from someone and the results are the same... Win freezes on startup
After some investigations i found out it crashes upon loading "viaagp*.sys"
I tried the latest availeble via drivers and noting...
Does anyone have any ideea what to do about it?
Thanks alot for any possible information.

Well it's old... it was taken from the server along with the mobo...
It is a very solid design and quiet, even after years of work.
Should I buy a new PS?
To get a complete picture of how much power it is used in my box:
     msi 964D pro MB
     2xP3@1Ghz
     1.5 Gb ram - 2x512Mb + 2x256Mb (pc133)
     2x120Gb WD stripe
     two maxtor 120Gb standalone drives
     - all 4 hdds have add-on coolers
     1 x LG dvd-rw
     gf 6200 graphics card
     audigy2 zs audio card
     intel pro gigabit lan card
     usb2/firewire controller card
     1x system fan
... i guess this covers it, but... how come it works when i disable agp 4x mode in bios?
does the graphics card "power down" parts of the gpu?

  • Need help with 694D Pro (MS-6321 ver 1.0)

Hi there, I'm having problems with my 694D Pro, I have installed 2x Piii 1Ghz at 133 x 7,5 (auto-detect). RedHat 8.0 smp mode doesn't boot, but hangs during boot, single cpu boot works, Mandrake 9.0 boots with 1 cpu in smp mode, Windows XP only shows 1 cpu in the taskmanager graphs, 2 are listed in device manager, what is wrong?
I'm not able to boot in smp mode in Lunix...

Some comments.  For Windows XP Pro to work correctly with SMP, you need to make sure to install it (XP) after both processors are in place.  If you do not, it will install a single-processor kernel.  Other than that, I have no clue why it would only use one processor.
As for Redhat/Linux, the default kernel that they provide has problems with the promise raid controller on this board.  I would suggest getting someone to compile a custom kernel for you and using that.  It makes it a pain to install as you can't just boot into their install CD, but it is very possible (I've done it too many times ).
If Mandrake 9.0 works, (haven't tried that one) then install with that, then build your own custom kernel.  Then you'll have both processors up and running.
As far as kernel configuration goes, make sure you disable APM and ACPI (yes!), enable Promise PDC20265 support and, if you like, software raid support.  I think both of these are marked EXPERIMENTAL, although both are very stable on my system.  Finally, of course, enable SMP
    Good luck.

  • BIOS for 694D Pro V1.0 [MS-6321] WHICH ONE? HELP?

Motherboard says 694D Pro V1.0. Board has Promise ATA 100 Raid Controller and sound.
BIOS version displayed on BOOT is W6321MS V3.0 092900
{I upgraded BIOS successfully initially as Windows XP would not load without the BIOS upgrade.
System is running fine except that it just doesn't seem to like any Adaptec SCSI card I put in it [Card and System says everything is fine but devices don't work well at all.
And to complicate matters, I've got a USB 2.09 card in it and a SIIG PCI ATA 133 card in it too.
On boot I get the following errors in the SYSTEM Event log
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0xcf8), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to read from an illegal IO port address (0xcfc), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 00D0B720C465.  The following error occurred:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.
The NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller service failed to start due to the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
The NATCAP service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.
So, first I upgraded the BIOS on the SIIG PCI ATA 133 IDE card and this appeared to go away. but it camr back. Suspecting the SCSI card I tried another one and even removed it, still the same errors.
So I went for the motherboard BIOS upgrade as w6321vms.370 indicates it corrects an ACPI error in Windows XP.
Problem is, the flash BIOS app says this is not the right BIOS for my board.
DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THE RIGHT BIOS IS?? Or have a clue?
    HELP!

The easy part: The ACPI error messages turn out to be Microsofts's way of dealing with older motherboard BIOS that use AMLI direct hardware reads and writes. In XP the came up with _OSI The error message is a non event. XP blocks the read or write and all is OK as XP does what the read or write was trying to do.
So, to make it co away, [cosmetic] one needs a BIOS upgrade and we're back to the question....WHICH BIOS IS RIGHT FOR THIS MOTHERBOARD? {So many BIOS choices, so little clear information.....]
The other NAVCAP boo-boo looks like innocous garbage like the errors you get when you try to remove Real player 8 and it fails.
RAID controller is active and working. SIIG ATA133IDE controller is active and working. NEC USB is active and working inspite of the error message. No SCSI card in right now but it wasn't working before. [That could be a whole 'nother problem though.]
MORE IDEAS? KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT WHICH BIOS IS WHICH?
    and thanks for the input.

  • 694D Pro - Dual turned single?

    Hi,
I've got a strange problem: my mb (ms-6321) can't complete the diagnostic test. It gets up to stage 6 (0110) and starts all over. I tried removing some memory / changing memory slots - same problem. I tried removing a few cards - same problem. Last, I tried removing the secondary processor - and it worked. I switched processors in the main socket (to make sure it wasn't the secondary processor's fault) - and it worked again. So, I seem to have a problem with both processors installed. This machine has served me flawlessly for 4 years, and only lately, following some renovations in my study that generated lots of dust, this problem occured.  I also tried disassembling the machine, dusting all the parts and re-assembling. Nothing.
    Can this problem be fixed?
    Sincerely,
    Erez Hadad
    https://forum-en.msi.com/images/msi/smilies/crying.gif
    BTW: my configuration:
    MS-6321 (694D Pro) + BIOS v1.9
    512MB ECC memory
    HD WD 80GB/7200RPM/8MB buffer
    Graphics: Voodoo 5 5500

    Hi Wonkanoby,
First, thank you for your time. Second, How do you search for something like that? I have no experience in microelectronics and the board looks fine - no fluids or stains. Got any further hints?
    Sincerely,

  • 694D Pro-AR going dead

Ok... It looks like my motherboard, a MSI 694D Pro-AR has died, I'll know for sure later today. This is what I'm getting:
I have verified that my ram/hard drives/video card, network card, and sound card are all good.  I have reseated everything and nothing has helped.
Both Windows and Linux now reboot sometime before I have completed logging in (or sometimes before it makes it that far) so it's not a software configuration issue as both were stable a week ago and my configuration hasn't changed.
I have yet to try each processor as a single which will help me determine for sure whether or not it is one of the processors or the motherboard.  I have good fans and a nice powersupply so neither of those should be at fault.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Need Help, i killed my AIR 694D-Pro Motherboard

    hello,
somedays ago i bought a server with very fine hardware.
the motherboard was a MSI 694D-Pro AIR, very fine - i got very excited. i pulled out the ati agp graphics-card and put in an asus V6800 AGP2x. Some Reboots were OK and Linux was very happy...
I powered down my computer and went out of the office, 1 hour later i came back and pushed the powerbutton .....there was coming smoke out ofthe case 8o i examined everything, and at least i screwed out the motherboard and had a look on the backside.....
There was a 'copper-line' i mean a 'path' on the board (my english is bad) which was melted! X(
i followed the line and saw i goes from the agp-powerPIN.
UPS! the connection for power was melted down, now i know why the server wont boot up. the status-leds on the motherboard are all on and ugly red.
can please somebody help me reparing my computer? i think of simply connecting a cable to the agp-powerPIN to bridge the melted 'line'
sorry for my bad english....i hope somebody could understand
thanks in advance for any help
    volker

I don't believe it can be fixed.
Check the card, it might also be burnt, and open the power supply to see if that's burnt.
Then remove the board from the case and look for extra stanoff's under the boards ( the metal pins that hold the board in place ).
The board is probably dead, but you need to be sure your not going to burn up anything else...

  • MS 694D Pro - problem with ata100 controller

    Hi,
I bought a new hard drive (Ibm 60GB, 7200rpm), and have a  serious problem. This new drive is intended to be a system drive ( master ) and off course I plugged it in the ata 100 /raid controller (on board promise fast trak 100) . I've installed msi promise driver from the floppy ( the only one that worked ), and set up win xp .
The problem is that now I have blue screens every time I try to read/write to hard drive ( the other words every 2 minutes)  X(
I think it is a controller issue, because when I plug the drive into the primary ide channel, everything works fine ( but much slower ).
Any help would be much appreciated ....

reading bios link the intergrated raid bios has been updated several times,3.4 and 3.6 both mention it
you must all ways use the raid driver that relates to the bios
any raid bios upgrade means updating the driver

  • 694d pro

My friend has a 694d pro...when i saw that he had win98 installed told him that it was completly useless because win98 doest support duel cpus..so i told him i would install xp..the dos part of the installations goes well, but as soon as windows boots for the first time, and goes through the installation steps...it finishes the "installing devices" part most of the times and when i get to entering the name and company, it automatically reboots...so figured needs a bios flash, when to the site and downloaded it...the thing is, installed v 16 and now the pc doesnt boot at all...gest past first boot screen detects ide, then stop says doest have the correct drivers to boot...helpppppppppppppppp lol

make sure you updated using the correct bios update, which vers of the 694D pro do you have A,I,AI,AR or AIR..The AIR & AR use bios update 3.7 while the rest only go up to 1.9....http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/bios/bos/spt_bos_detail.php?UID=83 ...after you verify that try changin the boot menu in bios so as to boot from cd...then see if your previous winxp install kicks in and resumes..other wise reformat (if thats an option) and start over. or try using a win 98 boot disk..install win98..then upgrade to winxp while in windows.

  • Howto use onboard Promise Raid Controller pdc20265 on 694D PRO AR Ver1

Currently I'm running Win2k on my MSI 694D Pro AR Ver 1.0 board with Bios version W6321VMS.310 and the included Fasttrack-Family Win2k Raid-Controller driver for my Promise Raid Controller pdc20265 with lite bios.
Due to software updates I'm now absolutely required to switch to Windows XP Prof. However this is the cause for my inquiry:
I downloaded and installed the latest available Bios version W6321VMS.370 from MSI site.
On installation of XP I tried to include the pdc20265 Fasttrack raid driver from MSI site to get access to my HD's. However WinXP couldn't find any HD's. Remark: XP with SP1 and VIA 4in1443v.exe installed.
So I repeated this procedure with the original drivers Fasttrack family and pdc202065 which were attached on floppy. Unfortunately no success as well.
Then I have put the HD on the Ultra66 channel and installed XP first without raid and ultra 100 support.
Later I re-enabled the on-board promise device in bios and unfortunately WinXP didn't recoginze the device by itself. So I provided the latest pdc20265 driver from MSI site. XP complained that the driver is not digitally signed. After reboot the promise device reported an error under WinXP.
I repeated this procedure with the original drivers Fasttrack family and pdc202065 which were attached on floppy. Unfortunately no success as well.
Why MSI-Site says this pdc20265 driver supports WinXP if there are only the Win2k and WinME,98... drivers included?
Currently I can't use the promise device at all under WinXP. This means even I don't have an Ultra 100 controler available.
Has anyone an idea how to install HD's on WinXP with the corresponding promise raid drivers for my pdc20265 onboard chipset?
    I'd really appreciate your help!

Some of the suggestions I don't understand quite well. Please could you explain further:
    > remove the other two drives leaving the raid pair
    > and cd only
    >
    > put raid 2nd in boot order
What do you mean with that?
    > reboot press the key you need to get in to raid bios
    > create the array and make it bootable
array is already created (Note: there is important data on it, can't recreate it! Only Segate 80GB is free and empty)
I don't want to boot from raid.
    >
    > now boot to cd to install, right at beginning it will say
    > press f6 to install mass storage drive you need the
    > driver on floppy to install it
I already tried the XP-Install routine to specify additional mass storage drivers. (Note: 1 single 80GB Drive was attached)  Which are the suitable ones? As mentioned I tried the following:
    1. Attached floppy 'Fasttrack family drivers'
Result: Message: Driver is for Win2k only. Not a single  Harddrive shows for installing XP.
    2. Attached Floppy (Promise Ultra 100 lite, 256 only)
Result: Driver is for Win2k only. Installation procedure hangs.
    3. Driver from MSI-Site for pdc20265. Same as 2.
    4. Extracting via4in1 drivers and putting WinXPIDE drivers on floppy:
Result: Installation routine doesn't recoginze drivers on floppy.
    > rest should be the same as normal
    >
    > this should be similar as well

Which is the right driver for WinXP to specify for mass storage device at WinXP installation?
