6GB iPod mini formatting at 4GB

I've just replaced my venerable iPod mini 6GB which is less than a year old with a brand new iPod video 60GB. The mini works just fine and I used it on my Mac but now that I have the new one, I've moved the mini over to my PC. It formats to a full 6GB (minus overhead ofcourse) with the Mac and HFS+ but on the PC it only formats at 4GB. The PC formatted mini claims it's filesystem is "RAW". Could this be because somehow it has been formatted with FAT16 instead of FAT32? I should also say that the PC is running Win2k3.

  • IPod mini 1st gen 4gb

I have an iPod mini 1st gen 4gb. When I click the wheel to advance to the next song nothing happens. The wheel works fine otherwise. I have reset and restored the iPod several times. What am I not doing?

    Robert,
Besides the scrolling feature built into the click-wheel, there is a microswitch button for each function.  In other words, Menu, Forwards, Backwards, Play/Pause and Center Button each have their own switch that’s activated when you press that part of the wheel.
It’s possible that the switch for the Forward function has failed.  Does that button work in ANY menu area.  Do the other buttons work?  If you’re in the middle of an album, can you go backwards in the list of songs?
I was just working on the click-wheel on one of my Mini a couple of days ago.  I bought a used one and the prev other had some kind of decal over the scroll and the adhesive virtually glued the center button to the rest of the wheel.
Hopefully, it’s just the Mini’s click-wheels are they’re available on eBay for about $10 and can be user-replaced, if you’re VERY careful.
I also have an old 1st gen Mini that could be a parts donor and could do this for you.  I could also replace the harddrive with a 32gb Compact Flash card and new battery  while the Mini is opened, if your interested.  I’ve done a BUNCH of those and they work great.  I'm even selling one of them on eBay now.

  • Ipod mini formatted for mac not recognized by PC

    Hi,
    Thanks in advance for help.
I have an ipod mini that was formatted on an ibook at work. i no longer have access to that computer and tried to connect the ipod to my PC. my pc does not see the ipod either under my computer or in itunes. i think it's a mac formatted ipod and i would like to restore it to windows, but it appears i need to have itunes find it in order to restore it. what do i do now?
    thanks.

First, put the iPod into forced disk mode.
See: How to put the iPod into disk mode.
    Now can iTunes see it?
If not, you could try a format of the iPod in Windows.
On your PC, go "my computer" and right click on the iPod, then choose "format". Ensure the settings are at "default" and choose "quick format".
When that's finished, restore the iPod using the updater in iTunes.
To exit forced disk mode, reset the iPod.

  • PLEASE HELP - iPod mini formatted...

I formatted my ipod mini with windows and now the only thing I get on the screen is a picture of a "folder" with a "hazzard" sign and the url: www.apple.com/support/ipod. A lot of good that's done me.
So now in essence it's acting like a removable HDD and nothing more.
I don't need to update the ipod because the updater tells me i have the latest software (1.4) on the ipod and when i try to restore the ipod i get the message "Firmware update failure. Disk write error"
I did manage to get the ipod up in itunes and uploaded a few songs onto the ipod but as soon as it was disconnected the picture of a "folder" with a "hazzard" sign and the url: www.apple.com/support/ipod came back up on screen and the ipod still won't restore.
I've tried practically everything on the apple ipod support pages and i don't know what else to do...
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciacted.

  • New Ipod mini formating forever

I am not sure if I am doing something wrong. I just got the IPOD mini 4g today and I put in the install disc, it told me to connect the IPOD and then said the IPOD needed to be formatted. This was over 30 mins ago.
The setup screen shows no avail buttons to click with a bar that says "waiting for ipod.." and keeps recycling. My IPOD shows do not disconnect and shows a circle thing with arrows in the top left.
Is it working right? I mean its been over 30 mins? Should I disconnect the USB and try a different port? Just wondering if the "waiting for IPOD..." and time is normal on a new one.

    I just saw this:
"If 1 still not able to recongize your iPod by the computer then you have to put your iPod to DiskMode i.e. plug your iPod to the AC charges, do a RESET and press "Select"+"Play" keys, you will see the message "Disk Mode" in few sec. Then you need to connect your iPod with your computer, and hope that it will be recongized. If you are lucky to reach this stage then you simply need to restore your iPod updater, and your iPod should be back to normal. Please note that You may need to plug and unplug few times in order to let your iPod to be recongized."

  • Windows formatted iPod Mini

    Hey everyone,
Basically, i came on here looking for info on how to change my windows formatted iPod Mini to Mac... and found how to do it! But I have one main concern, will a Mac formatted Mini still show up on a Windows machine? I know that my mini shows up on my mac at the moment formatted as windows, but still, will it work the other way round i wonder :S.
    Cheers, Ben
    iBook G4 - 12inch - 1.33GHz - 1GB DDR   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   6GB iPod Mini in Green

An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. However here are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, this is one for instance: XPlay 2

  • What? How do I dowload the "latest ipod mini update"?

Hello. I have an Ipod Mini (2nd Generagation 4GB). I had put it away a few years ago when trying to reformat it. It had been on Mac, and I was switching to Wondows. I had trouble downloading itunes for some reason. I dont think i was on dialup, but I had problems and just quit trying in frustration. I plugged it in to charge a few hours ago. The screen was blank. I googled and looked through forums at how to boot it up. I couldnt remember. Well, after just under 2 hours of charging at the wall, I connected via USB to my PC, and it doesn't even get recognized. My PC just says it's searching. I tried to hold the MENU & SELECT buttons for the suggested time until th Apple logo comes up. Nope. Nothing doing. Nothing comes up. I keep trying.
I found the Apple Support info that is dated 2004, where it tells me to go to the Apple Support slash Ipod, to download the latest Ipod Mini software. What is that? There isn't such a thing. I can't even find a mention of it anywhere on the internet. This support manual info on Apple tells me I need to do this to be able to rest my Mini.
I should be able to see the Mini pop in my iTunes, if I open it, if I have it connected via USB. But I don't.
Maybe there is a battery inside the Mini that won't charge? Should I take it apart to look? So far, no Apple logo no matter what I try. Nothing on the screen at all to show a battery charging or anything.
If I take it apart, what should I look for? I'd like to take it apart to see. I couldn't find any YouTube videos on that either.
    What would you try?
    Thanks.

I know, I really REALLY wish that firefox would keep the security and cosmetic updates SEPARATE!

  • Ipod Mini - Mainboard - SMD Chip Q10 ? what is it ? damaged when reassmblng

When re-assembling my Ipod Mini , 2nd Gen , 4Gb , I damaged the 6-pin chip Q10 which mounts on the back of the main board near the bottom . I'd like to try to find out what it is in order to try to replace it . It's a Surface Mount Device or SMD . Thanks for any responses .

I've come to the realisation that this discussion group is for the use of Ipods that are in working condition , and not for the repair of Ipods . Sorry to have bothered you .

  • Problem w/ipod mini reseting/charging

I've been having a problem with my ipod mini (2nd. gen 4gb) not fulling charging even after 8 hours and then shutting itself off and reseting after a few minutes of use. I've read some of the posts and couldn't really find a solution yet. I've tried reseting manually while plugged in to my computer (I don't have a wall plug-in adapter) I made sure I'm fully updated (v. 1.4) and have not yet reset it to factory settings, I'm hoping not to have to do that because I have a huge library of music on my computer and do not want to have issues reloading some of it onto my ipod. I have started the process to send it in for repairs but an afraid I will be charged the diagnostic fees (I can't afford the possible $100) I've got a dark spot in my lcd screen in the upper corner and a few scratches on the case from being transported in my purse with my keys but other than that it hasn't been traumatized in any way (never dropped etc.) I'm thinking about going to my local apple store tomorrow to see if they can help. I just want to know that if I cancel my repair order before sending in my ipod that I won't be charged anything and also if I do end up sending it back that it won't be sent back with a bill unrepaired. Please help me I got this a few months ago for my birthday and cannot afford to buy a new one if this ones broken and not repairable!

Ok so I charged it all night and took it off this morning and as soon as I turned it on and toldit to play a song so I could try calibrating the battery it said low battery and shut off again! It showed it was still charging on the screen, I unmountedit from my computer showed an almost full battery then jumped to half full then shut off. I'm getting so incredibly frustrated with this thing, somebody please help me out here!

  • Apple logo on ipod mini screen

I have a question that I really hope it will get answered.
I have had my 6GB Ipod mini for about 7 months now, and I experienced no problem until last month.
If I try to turn my Ipod mini on after at least 2 days of non-use, the apple logo will appear and erase the shuffle function (meaning that I lose where the shuffling was), and the battery decreases about 1/2 way.
I tried restoring and updating, but no luck.
    Can someone please help me!
    Thanks!

    Yes it is normal.

  • IPod Mini -becoming extinct?

Is Apple still selling the iPod Mini? or did they pull the promo's back to clear the stage for the Nano?
I was on the apple.com site and couldn't find any information where they're selling Mini's -only refurbished ones!!!!
I own a 6GB, iPod Mini in Green. Being on a modest income and resourceful in nature, I scored mine off the CompUSAautcions.com site.
check this out, only the iPod, iPod Nano & iPod Shuffle are listed on the Store site: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/70503/wo/Lu5OnVk GTWCp3yKwf4KUKUyQKUo/0.SLID?nnmm=ipod&mco=A6951E92
What does this mean for us Mini owners? Why the dramatic withdrawal? What gives? Are we being dumped?

Apple is not selling minis any more, they are not evem making them. The iPod Nano has replaced the mini.
Why the dramactic withdrawl? The Nano is so much better than the mini, in some things. In others, it's not.
You are not being dumped, you can always post your problems here and we'll try to help you (although I don't know who the others are when I said we lol)

  • Did I just kill my iPod Mini?

OK. Dropped it. About three feet to a concrete floor.
Almost like dropping a baby off the diaper-changing table. Not quite, but almost.
    Tried to activate it.
    1) Got the black Apple logo;
    2) Took longer than usual to kick in, but then got a skeleton icon of an iPod, with an +unhappy face+ and *explanation point* in a triangle;
    3) Underneath, said: www.apple.com/support/ipod
Problem: If I've murdered my iPod Mini, I've got a problem.
I am running Panther (10.3.9) on an iMac, which is about five years old.
I have not upgraded operating systems for a variety of reasons. For example, I do not want to learn new commands/menus/and what, in effect, represent "new" programs; I do not want to find out a new operating system is not compatible with the variety of "old" programs I have been using (successfully)...a fact I've picked up in several forums right here.....and, since my computer is five years old (apparently a dinosaur in the computer world) I'm not about to invest any more money into it, or its compatibility with other programs/accessories.
Incidentally, if there's one key problem with +Apple+, this is it: Whenever a new operating system is released, we poor, loyal Mac users seem to be screwed. Have to upgrade ($), buy other new programs ($), even equipment. I have never met a PC user who has run into that problem.
So: Any suggestions regarding my 6GB iPod Mini? Before I give it its last rites and bury it, is there something I could do to bring it back to life? If not:
Where can I get a "new" iPod Mini. That's compatible with Panther (10.3.9)? Apple Store doesn't have any other iPod that's compatible with Panther. At least that has a minimum of 6 GB.
    Suggestions appreciated.

    What's with the baby-dropping analogy...?
See if you can put it into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
If that works, connect it to your Mac. Run iTunes and see if it is recognized. If so, do a Restore to erase the iPod and initialize its software.
If you broke the IBM/Hitachi MicroDrive inside, you may be able to fix it and upgrade it at the same time. The tiny drive it uses is the same form-factor as a compact flash card, with the same connector. You can supposedly replace it with a compact flash card and get a flash-based iPod mini. 8GB compact flash cards are getting pretty cheap.
    http://geektechnique.org/projectlab/753/how-to-turn-your-ipod-mini-into-a-flash- based-ipod
There are online videos for taking apart the iPod mini, for example
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVin-kUSHd8
If you do take it apart, you may want to replace the battery, less than $10 on eBay including tools and shipping for a higher cap battery, while you have it open.

  • Dead iPod mini -- now what?

Hi, I have a 6GB iPod mini that suddenly went completely dead. Absolutely no signs of life on its LCD panel, even when plugged into a USB jack or a charger/speaker device. When I turned it on a few days ago I saw the "low battery" icon flash briefly, but it went dead immediately after that and has stayed dead. I am wondering if this means the battery has gone completely dead -- but if so, shouldn't it power up when plugged into an external power source? Or would a dead battery prevent even that from happening? How can I find out for sure what is wrong with it? I've seen battery replacement kits for very little money so I wouldn't mind giving that a try, but obviously if it is going to be much more expensive then I suppose I'd be better off getting a new iPod (though the mini meets all my needs so I'd rather not have to do that!)
    Thanks,
    Samizdat

    Hi,
Have you connected it to your computer? If not, connect it, then try resetting the mini. Hold down the Menu and Select (Center) buttons for 6 seconds, or until you get an Apple logo on the screen. See if that works. If not, post back.
Even if the battery is dead, the iPod should be recognized on your computer. Sometimes plugging it into an external power source doesn't do the trick.

  • Mac Formatted iPod Mini, want to use on PC then back to Mac?

I want to use my Mac formatted iPod Mini on a PC when I'm away for Christmas, but when I return home I want to use it on my Mac again. Is formatting the iPod to a PC required to do this? I don't want to lose all my music when I'm away because there will be no way to get it back till I return home. And, if I must format for a PC, what will happen when I plug it back into a Mac? Do I have to reformat again? Has anybody accomplished this successfully?

An iPod formatted with Windows will work with Windows or Mac.
An iPod formatted with Mac will not work on Windows. WIndopws cannot read Mac.
If you format with Windows, you will not need to reformat with Mac.

  • Old iPod mini can't be recognized after formatting, and iTunes 'Apple Mobile Device Driver not found.'

My roommate gave me an old iPod Mini a few days ago. It was working fine 'til I plugged it into my computer and it asked me to format it. I did, and now it cannot be recognized by iTunes or my computer. My computer views it as a "removable disk" which cannot be accessed. In devices, it is listed as an Apple iPod though, so I'm hoping not all is lost. I have tried many quick fixes I've read on internet (including changing disk letter) but to no avail. I have reinstalled the new iTunes and now that is telling me it has not installed properly, and when I ran diagnostics, it reads that the Apple Mobile Device Driver not found. I will copy & paste all the info from the diagnostic run below, and if anybody can help me with my new (old) iPod, I'd be everly greatful!
