6GB RAM in MacBookPro ???

I clicked thru to Ramjet site (www.ramjet.com) and found their sales pitch for 6GB RAM in more recent MBP models. My Profile:
Hardware:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
SMC Version: 1.16f10
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
appears to meet what they claim as the requirements to properly run the 4/2=6 combination.
Has anyone else verified this in practice? I am newer to MAC so am not comfy with a sales site providing critical info. I run Vista under Parallels and MAC simultaniously all day with several programs always running under each, so the memory can't hurt (I assume). Guess this also introduces the question If Parallels will recognize & utilize the added RAM.
Sorry for length of post. Any advice sure is appreciated!
Kevin

Si I went ahead and ordered the 4GB RAM after the Apple tech said he had never heard of it, but what the heck, it's returnable. (BTW: Fri, 01.30.09 it was $199 on the Ramjet site, Wed, 02.03.09 it was $225, so watch prices!).
Installed the 4GB with the 2GB and the MacBook Pro recognized (and presumably is using) all 6GB. Further, I split the RAM with Vista under Parallels, and Vista recognizes 3GB when I set the split to 50/50.
So it does work!!!! And with 50% more RAM the performance of both sides should be improved.

  • 6GB RAM on MacBookPro 4,1 (early 2008)

    Hi everyone,
i've browsed around the discussion board and found that many of you are having the 6GB (1x4GB + 1x2GB sticks) of ram configuration on the MBP 4,1 model, which is the maximum amount supported by the hardware, as opposed to the 4GB recommended by apple, i'm tempted to upgrade my MBP from 2GB of ram to 6GB and i'd like to know the following:
    1. has anyone experienced any problems with the 6GB configuration?
    2. does it work fine in snow leopard?
    3. any suggestion on what combination of type and or brand for the two sticks?, considering you cannot get identical sticks bundled since they are of two different sizes (or are there bundles for this? i'd like to know).
thank you very much in advance,
    cheers

As far as apple ram, any kingston, corsair, crucial, name brand ram is very similar. Just make sure it comes with a warranty! You are right that you cannot get a matched pair with the 2,4 configuration but I am certain that it will be significantly faster than the 2GB that you have. Snow Leopard will make things even faster not only because of your ram but because it will also take advantage of your video card's processing speed.

  • Illustrator and Photoshop lag in i5+6gb RAM

I own Lenovo Z510 laptop with configuration - i5 4th gen, 6GB RAM, 8GB SSD(hybrid). and Nvidia GeForce 740M. Even in this configuration Illustrator and Photoshop CS5 is lagging (Even when working without textures, just plain colors). How can I optimize the settings? In Photoshop for hardware acceleration it uses onboard Intel 4000 graphics. Is that the reason? I am not getting Nvidia on drop down (switchable graphhics?).
    Please help. Its painfully slow!

You definitely want Photoshop taking advantage of your video card (Nvidia) instead of your chipset (Intel). You like will have to configure you graphics settings so that the chip set is turned off to get things working correctly.

  • Vista x64 and 6GB RAM?

    Howdy,
I've had the new 2.8GHz 8 Core Mac Pro since launch, and only, today, got another 4GB of RAM for it, bringing it to a total of 6GB.
Well upon installing the RAM, OS X saw all 6GB of ram which was great, but my Boot Camp installation of Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit only saw 2GB. I didn't know about this issue originally, but found out about it then
I have the Retail copy of Vista Ultimate, therefore I have the 64bit version sitting here, but my question is, how much of my 6GB ram would I see if I installed the 64bit version of Vista? Would I still only see 2GB... or may I even see the full 6GB?
Any help will be appreciated, I don't want to waste time installing the 64bit version, if it will only see what the 32bit version does!

    See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6245994&#6245994
But all I know is that XP Pro (32 bit) sees 3 of my 4GB on my MBP.

  • 2008 MacPro, 6GB Ram, Running Slow-Slow response

The MacPro has 6GB ram and 3 internal drives installed. It responds very slowly to keyboard input, often shows the cursor as a spinning wheel due to processing input. Does this even after a fresh restart with. Using Activity Monitor, I see a process named "addressbooksource.sync" that is running excessively, using up to 50% of CPU capacity and shows over 4GB of my wired ram. Address Book is not running. I do not know what is causing this process to be running. When I force quit it within Activity Monitor it does not change the resonsiveness of the MacPro. The machine was doing this under LION and now also under Mt. LION.
Does anyone have suggestions on how to solve this?

    mhermsen-
If just 2GB is showing, the rest has failed. You do not need any more diagnostics or work to determine this.
Pull it out and return to the Vendor for replacement.

  • Why is 6GB ram being used with barely anything going on?

So I'm looking at my Activity Monitor for the first time since I got the late 2013 Macbook Pro.
To my amazement it's showing 6GB being used or 75% of my 8GB?!
But looking at the activity monitor is showing that the highest ram use is Kernel Monitor at 600MB.
    After that it's com.apple.ServiceAgent @ 170MB and Google Chrome at 140MB.
Than there are like 15 "Google Chrome Helpers" ranging from like 100-30MB. What in the world is "Google Chrome Helpers" this seems like some kind of operating system bug to me...
I have about 13 Google Chrome tabs open but even more Helpers than tabs in the Activity Monitor...
There's no way a small Google Chrome session should take up well over 1gb ram?!
Even still, if I estimate all the Memory usage displayed in my Activity monitor it should be low 2GB, defenitely less than 3GB.
So why is it saying 6GB in use? The MAC OS couldn't possibly be 3 GB right???
This is crazy and I've noticed my MAC is pretty sluggish today while I'm trying to work. What in the world is going on here?
Can I manually cancel all those " Google Chrome Helpers" for starters?
On Windows 7 I could have literally 100's of internet tabs open and see less than 6GB ram useage no joke! Need help here please.

That all sounds great in theory but I'm looking at my Activity Monitor right now and it says:
    Compressed: 0 bytes
So it sounds like I'm not getting any of the benefits with the compression from that article?
My other stats are looking like:
    App Memory: 3.41 GB
    File Cache : 2.05 GB
    Wired Memory: ~1GB
My memory pressure looks about 20% at least even with 6.65 GB active.
Is there a reason why I have no compressed memory? It sounds like that was the whole point of this system but it's not doing anything for me? Or does that only kick in once you use up all 8GB?
I'm not sure about all this. I've been a PC guy all my life and overall I'm EXTREMELY satisfied with both my macbook pro and the iPad air I just got. But I got this stuff so I can develope games for iOS using Unity 3D, and I need a laptop. So I didn't make this purchase for the heck of it, this is business to me. And recently I've noticed that Unity 3D and Monodevelop are becoming increasingly sluggish. Because I'm having some lag problems even with just using Monodevelop which is a simple IDE for my C# work, I have been trying to figure out what's the problem here.
Apparently lots of others are having trouble with Mac OS Maverick when using Unity 3D. I'm just hoping this stuff gets sorted out and doing my best to see if I can improve the performance.
Are there any guides for optimizing a macbook pro for faster performance? It's not acceptable for me to have lag while I work. Right now I'm trying to work only on the macbook pro so I get used to it and can hopefully work nearly as fast as the PC even without using duel monitors so I can work on the go.
Just such a big difference from PC where I am quite profficient. On MAC I have no clue what I can do to fix lag.
Is there a way to modify what progams launch on start up similar to on PC typing "msconfig" in start bar allows you to edit this kind of thing?
Unity 3D is a pretty big deal for iOS and MAC development so hopefully if it is just some kind of code problems with Unity and Maverick this get's sorted out ASAP. Until then I'm doing my best to see if there's any thing I can do on my end.
The huge RAM usage was a big red flag to me on first glance, but I guess you guys are saying this is fine. Still seems strange to me how much RAM is being used, on PC I can't imagine ever needing more than 8GB Ram, on Mac it seems like this could be pretty easy to accomplish, which explains why there is 16GB RAM models which to me seemed excessive.
So I'm guessing it's normal to have that many "Google Chrome Helpers" active at once?

  • Extremely slow rendering. i5, 6gb RAM, CS6 PRO

    Hi guys!
So I got really tired of insanely long render times. I usually use 1-2 video tracks, no keying, no special effects, commonly use Warp Stabilizer, Cineon Converter and PRO Camp, of course some colour correction (usually RGB curves, but sometimes a three way). Usually it ends up being about 3-4 tracks. On last project it took 2 hours to render a two minute video. Below i'll post info on that.
And today its taking about 12 hours to render a 40 minute video.( I am frustrated and sad of this(
    My usual composition layout:
    Titles
    adjustment layer
    video 2 (rare)
    video 1
    sound one
    sound two
    sound three (rarely)
    My laptop^
    i5 2n gen 2.5-3.2Ghz dual core (4 logical cores)javascript:;
    6GB Ram 1333 MHz
GT 525M 1GB (i've enabled CUDA GPU acceleration. works like a charm on all 96 little silicon cylinders.)
    540rpm 640 GB, practically empty (Partition D)
Use Canon for video recording, so it is UP TO fullHD .mov files. Usually FHD @ 70-100MB/s (canon's standart) Screenshots were taken at the moment of rendering (70% through)
    My export settings are:
    .h264
    FullHD
    29.97FPS/30FPS
    VBR Pass 2
    Target bit rate 8-10 mbs
    max - 15-20
"Use Max rendering quality + use max bit depth"
Can someone point out my idiocity? Please let me know what shoud I do to avoid this.
PS, 8 core MacPro or an 8 core i7 extreeme, are neither an option here(... just sain'
English is not my native, so sorry for mistakes.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks mate!
I kinda knew all of what you said, but i guess now i am more sure of suckingness of my machine... funny thing is, load goes up to 90% maybe three times during a render and it stays loaded for a short periodof time... i loogged one of my renders back when i had Win7 x64 (ultimate) (same machine) and it showed that neither of devices were loaded more than 90%
    it was something like this:
    CPU <92%
    GPU <95% (exception)
    disk <30%
    memory <50-65%
I know that with VBR 2 there are 2 passes, thus twice as long in render... but god damn, almost 2 hours for a 2 minute video??? its awful. and all of those procesess take up less than 7% for all of them. Finally, since i got only 6 GB of physical memory, my adobe is able to only use 4gb. so there is nothing bad.. I've never had any issues with such low RAM. If i had an i7, then yes, i'd need about 12-16 gb to get the most, even though, its the, SATA to Hard drive that bottlenecks the stuff. I wish I could get an SSD, but they are hellishly expensive. i got my drive thru sata3, but still, the drive is kinda sad and broken (old) so this is why i must be getting such low speeds... even when i copy info using USB3<-->USB3 device, the speed never goes over 20MBs for downloading and 5MB to uploading to a USB device.
PS... sucks to wotk an a low end machine.

  • IF it's true one can install 6GB RAM in a early 2008 MB Pro (Penryn) then..

    ..why limit to 4GB?
    Hello All,
I'm the sort of person who tinkers, takes apart and breaks the rules now and again and I'm curious if 6GB RAM can indeed be installed in a Penryn MBPro!? If so, why have Apple placed a limit of 4GB?
Being of a curious nature, can anyone inform me..?

It is possible according to some sources, but I doubt it will dramatically increase the macbooks performance and could even cause a slight loss of speed.
I don't really care what you "thought" the Discussions were for, my response and quote were to the OP and particularly his tag line, which I quoted, "feel free to speculate." I responded with a quote of the rules here, to him, saying that one of the things they do not allow us to do here is exactly that, speculate. And as I stated in my follow-up, I should have known better, and let the moderators send him an email quoting that same section reminding him you cannot speculate here. Usually I do try to refrain from getting involved and pointing out terms in the ToU that new members, like yourself, obviously did not read. And can you tell me how my response to his invitation to further speculation, "missed the point."
Sorry, don't wear a Stetson hat, I do know proper capitalization and punctuation, I will try to refrain in the future, and I hope you take the time to properly read and understand the ToU here. If it is not to your liking there are other places you can participate that might more closely fit your opinion of what a discussion site might be, this one is Apple's and we all have to follow their rules.
I again remind you I was responding to the OP, you are the one who butted in here, and fully 1/3 of your posts include this moronic one that I am responding to, so who is actually the pedant and the one trying to stir up a debate?

  • Set up virtual memory for 6gb ram

    hi ,
can any one please tell me how to set the virtual memory custom size for 6GB ram?

    Frederic,
Those rules of thumb stem from the era when is was common to have 2 or 4 GB of memory, but with memory in the range of 12, 16 or 24 GB, I think we can forget about that rule of thumb. I would use a rule of thumb that the sum of installed memory and pagefile need not exceed 32 GB. With disk space being so cheap there is no reason to skimp on pagefile size, but with increasing amounts of installed memory, the pagefile will be used less and less. The general rule that Windows applies would result in a pagefile of 36 GB on a 24 GB system and that is overdone IMO. On a 48 GB system, Windows suggests a whopping 72 GB pagefile! That makes no sense. So, on a 48 GB system even a 4 GB pagefile would likely not be used at all, but Windows requires one to be present, otherwise it will create one for you on C, which is dynamically allocated and that is worse than a fixed, static pagefile as the first file on another disk.
Of course, if you make it a habit to switch between AE, PR, Maya and other applications a lot and work on files with large pixel dimensions, the sum total can easily be increased to 48 GB.
My suggestion is to use common sense.

  • Is the apple laptop with 4gb ram and i5 better than other laptop with 6gb ram and i5

is the apple laptop with 4gb ram and i5 better than other laptop with 6gb ram and i5

Well it depends on the age.     http://www.everymac.com/ should help you identify the age of the two models.
Apple may use two processors called i5, but newer models have different optimizations than older models.
The processor is usually not the main affect on speed.  RAM helps, but barely unless everything is on an SSD already.   Hard drive speed is usually the limiting factor of speed on computers.   eSATA hard drives with higher RPM can often yield the fastest results because notebook hard drives tend to be slower that are not SSD, but for those you need either Express/34 or Thunderbolt based adapters.

  • System crashing with 6GB RAM, fine with 4GB

    intel i7 920
    6GB RAM
windows 7 home premium 64 bit
    MSI x58 platinum motherboard
    nvidia GTX 260 graphics
    750w power supply
got my system being fixed by a professional, but we're stuck right now trying to find a solution to my problem. The system is fine with 4GB in any slot, but when the third stick is put in, the system crashes.
I'll go into some more detail of my troubles, this should help in the solution.
system was built out of Fry's Electronics 2 years ago. From the moment that I took it home I was having this problem. I thought it might be a faulty RAM stick at the time, so I had them replaced, but to no avail. The soluton if I remember was to reformat. Everything was fine for 2 years.
last month I opened up the system and cleaned the dust out of the inside. I removed the RAM and the CPU fan. Hooked everything back up and the system starts crashing and rebooting like crazy, and there's the problem again. It would crash while it's booting up, while it's sitting at the desk top, while I'm on the internet, any time it wanted to crash, it would do so. Not only that, but my BIOS and graphics drivers were suddenly out of date for some reason. I keep my drivers up to date, so this was weird to me.
I'll forward the ideas that you guys come up with to my guy, thanks ahead for your assistance.

Quote from: tcourchaine on 14-September-11, 02:59:59
I can't provide you guys with anything, it's been with this guy for over a month. I've been running with 6GB for the past 2 years with no problems until I dusted out the inside of the case. Obviously it aggravated the problem I had two years ago.
i agree, maybe that wasn't the solution. it was after all 2 years ago and my memory was fuzzy. After a month and a half with this guy I got my comp back today. He reinstalled windows 7 and updated the BIOS. That helped out a lot, but it still froze twice, and reset it's self once with 6GB RAM in it. I took the 3rd RAM stick out, givign me 4GB, and noticed that my graphics drivers weren't updated yet, so maybe that was the reason for the crashes? I'm not so sure about that either though, because after I updated the GPU drivers it froze not too long after that. Maybe I needed to reboot for the drivers to take full effect? it didn't prompt me to restart, so I'm a little uncertain there.
I was thinking of trying it with 6GB RAM again, now that my graphics drivers are up to speed and the system has been rebooted.

  • IMac late 2009 with 6GB RAM, slow with Yosemite

Have you ever used that small pc computers with slow processors, called netbooks? This is what my super fast iMac late 2009 (6GB RAM) with Mavericks turned into, after upgrading it to Yosemite OS X.
I mean, processor itself doesn't look to busy, but user experience is click and wait (when nothing happens, I almost want to click again but then action happens). Opening window animation is like slide show - it is not smooth as it was before, with Mavericks.
Anybody with iMac late 2009 can confirm this or is it my setup only?
I have the basic late 2009 model, except I upgraded it to 6GB RAM soon after I purchased it.
This is how my About this Mac looks like:
And this is how my hard disks look like:
Nothing specially busy here, just slow Yosemite. When I open Safari, Mail, iPhoto and iTunes, it is not good to open any other app, because I might wait much more. I caught my self using iPad while opening fifth app on iMac (just to get an idea, how very slow it feels).
