6th Gen Nano- which part needs replaced?

My wife's 8GB Nano went through the wash. Currently, if plugged into the computer, it is recognized in iTunes and I can interact with it appropriately. Several times, without any consistency, the screen will work and the iPod functions correctly. This lasts ~30 min, at the longest, then the screen again becomes unresponsive. The battery can charges to full based on the indicator in iTunes, and does hold a charge (possibly sub-optimally) based on the level during the times when the screen works. My goal is to fix it using aftermarket parts. My question is, given the information above, should I start out with a new screen, assuming the connection to the main board is faulty? Should I replace the board itself, despite it functioning well in iTunes when the screen is off?

I've had good luck drying out all different iDevices with the exception of the 6th Generation Nano, I put in in a baggie with silica gel, let it dry for 7 days in a warm, dry spot (skip putting it in the sun) and I was not able to revive it.
My recommendation would be to do an out-of-warranty replacement with Apple. The Nano is small and difficult to work on and your parts will probably come to a hire pice than just doing the OOW replacement.

  • Which parts need replacing?

Hello, am on a G4 with 10.4. I can only boot from an external dvd now but once I get tiger install disk going and go to disk utilities or to install it can't find the imac hard drive anymore.
If I go to system profiler most of the stuff looks okay except ATA which just shows a "~:" sign , for Disk Burning it says "no device found" and also says "no device found" for Parallel SCSI and Serial ATA - whether these should be there or not is a mystery to me, but the hard drive doesn't show up anywhere.
I suspect the hard drive has gone kaput but could it be anything else?
any advice short of "chuck it out of the window" which is what i feel like doing gratefully received, thanks

    Anne,
I can understand your confusion. The basic problem is likely faulty capacitors on your logic board which is part of the Midplane. Power supply could also be a problem. When we bought our iMac's the midplane and power supply were user installable parts. This no longer applies. There are very few user installable parts now, see: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86812
The midplane has many parts and now instead of replacing the whole thing only the faulty parts are being replaced. Sometimes running diagnostics are better done in a repair facility. Various tests were done on mine over a 4 day period.
Speak with Apple Customer Relations they may be able to help you with this or speed up the process. I was able to take mine to the Apple Authorized Service Provider of my choice.

  • 6th gen nano not syncing all tracks from library

Can anyone tell me what the little exclamation mark beside unsynced tracks means?  I have a 6th gen nano which will only sync 491 tracks out of 1026 in my library.  I didn't have a problem when I had a 3rd Gen nano, it only seems to have happened since getting the new one.

It means that iTunes can no longer locate that particular track in the location it is pointed at on your PC's hard drive. See this article for more information and assistance.

  • HOW do I get the "watch" to stay on and not shut off on my 6th GEN  NANO?

After purchasing a $70 cool watchband for my new 6th GEN NANO, I'm very disapointed that I can't get the "watch" function to stay on more than 15 seconds.  AppleCare says that it isn't meant to stay on, it would run down the battery.  Then why put on 16 watch faces, and show it as a "watch" on everything you publish?  Doesn't make sense you can watch TV shows and movies, but doesn't have enough battery to run a watch face.   BAD design, and shame on APPLE for selling a dozen different watchbands in their stores.  Now don't you think the store salesman would say "are you thinking of wearing this as a watch, or to hold your NANO while you are at the gym"?   15 seconds is often not enought time to get setup and take someone's blood pressure.  I don't think I need to offer an explanation of WHY a watch should work more than 15 seconds without pushing a button, do I?

This is getting silly, but I'm not too young to remember the early digital watches.  The difference is that we knew what we were buying .  jThey were upfont about the FACT that the watches didn't stay on.  And how well did they sell as watches?  Hmmm    I don't think any of us said that Apple was pushing Nano primarily as a watch.  That said, this is not a third party "app" either .... 18 clock faces come with the Nano as a "feature" of the product. It's not a "digital time read out"... it's made to look and act like a watch.   Apples own website touts that you can change its face "to match your mood or your outfit".... The  bands they sell range from $20 bucks to like $150 bucks....   This is a HUGE money maker for them.   It is THESE KINDS OF FEATURES that brings people back buying new ipods, because like I said, without them, I have plenty of devices that already "record music", or "store pictures".    And your other points have zero merit.  Go to the Apple website to the Nano 6 page where Apple touts all of its merits. This is where Apple explains the features of their product.  There is a whole section:
    http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/features.html
Clock faces. Time to match your mood. Or your outfit.
    (copy below)
    It’s all in the wrist.
Do you wear your iPod nano on a watchband? With 18 different clock face designs to choose from, you can have a new watch style whenever the mood strikes you. Sport an analog face for a formal event, go digital for a retro feel, or choose a whimsical, animated character like Mickey Mouse or Kermit the Frog. There are also color options so you can match the color of your iPod nano. iPod nano watchbands are available in a range of styles and colors from theApple Online Store.
And last, for the record Sir, I have probably purchased 50 Apple products for myself, my business, and as gifts in the last 10 years.  I have had my manufacturing issues which Apple always responsibly took care of.  But I have NOT ONCE complained in this forum about ANYTHING. I am a HUGE Apple fan.  I felt strongly enough, that this issure warranted warning others about.  Mostly, I wanted APPLE to understand the gaff and perceptual problem which was created. Perhaps not to all (like to you), but certainly to some (obviously like me). Let's face it, we BOTH represent groups of the public, like it our not.  Especially, since I rarely talk to Apple staff, I'm an early adopter, and for some reason, I hesitated on this product and did talk to a couple staff members when I was in the store FOR OTHER THINGS. I bought one for myself, and three for gifts.  I've already returned the ones I bought as gifts, because when I showed my neices and nephews MINE, and the disfunction of the watch, they all lost interest in keeping theirs, and opted for other Apple devices instead.  And if you still don't think they are marketing this Nano as a watch more than  iphone, touch, pad, or classic, then I throw up my arms, and say Happy New Year.  You are Apple washed and whipped beyond repair. NOBODY is perfect, not even Apple.  Or, you.

  • No sound from JBL speaker/charger with new 6th gen nano

I just received my ipod original replacement with a 6th gen, but when I put it into my old JBL on stage speaker/charger It did nothing,
Will I need a new speaker/charger or do they make a adapter from the old original to the new 6th gen ?

    All I need is fact.
The fact of the matter is you won't know unless you at least try it just as the previous poster suggested that you do!

  • 6th Gen nano,

    2) Bigger screen - gone
I believe that the screen is bigger.
I predict the Nano to be an epic failure. One has to wonder how the iPod team could possibly trash the elegant and highly functional G5 and replace it with......@#$%
That's very similar to what people said about the Mini. Smaller, too expensive. Turned out to be the one of the best selling iPods ever.
The new Nano was the only new iPod that really grabbed me. I ordered one as soon as the speech was over. I have one of the, I believe, 3rd gen Nanos, which was also squarish. Loved the shape. As I primarily use my Nano for running, video capture and playback never really mattered to me. I like the small size. I have a couple of Shuffles which are nice enough but I really don't like the lack of screen.
I think this Nano has huge potential.

  • Shutting off and battery life 6th gen nano

I tried every way possible to get 24 hours battery life on the new 6th gen Nano, and the most I got was 12 hours. That was without touching the device, just letting it play music at 128bit rate. and everything off!. what is wrong! Also there is no way to turn off the Nano completely, only pause it. Please Apple send us all a software update that will fix this problem!! Don't let this product be another flop like your Iphone 4th gen was. To many flops and you will start going from number 1,to the worst company to purchase from.Your products in the past have been to good to let issues like this ruin your reputation. Please keep up the good work in your past, and don't let your products go to the garbage bin. thank you sincerely.

    Mad Man,
I'm with you on these concerns. The "shutting off" of a device should not be a guessing game, nor should the user need to jump through hoops, particularly if the user is a child. Seems if the customer base has concerns, or is at least unclear on the topic (which the countless complaints on the web would indicate they are), I would have hoped that apple would have at least dignified it's customers with a response.
I've read other posters respond to this line of question, with short answers, and attempt to dismiss the issue and question through shaming someone for even questioning the functionality, but these are legitimate questions. If apple can not, or will not respond, I suspect there will be more returns of the product than anticipated.

  • My 6th gen nano never works unless connected to my computer

my 6th gen nano never works unless connected to my computer. I already restored factory settings twice, it's still not working. It automatically turns off when I unplug it from pc.

If a complete restore of the Nano failed to resolve the issue, the issue is hardware related.  In your case it sounds like the battery is shot and in need of a replacement as it can no longer hold or rebuild any sort of charge.  You can choose to have Apple swap out the battery for a flat fee or you can send it to a third party service to have them replace the battery for a little less.
If the Nano is less than a year old, it should still be covered under Apple's 1 year warranty against manufacturing defects.  In that case, bring to your local Apple Store/Genius Bar and show them what is going on and they should swap it out for you at no cost.

  • 6th Gen Nano skipping songs

    Hi all
I have a 6th Gen Nano that i recieved as a replacement for a 1st gen.  It has been working perfectly until recently when i noticed that it started to skip some songs.  It is not all songs that are affected but a significant proportion of them.  The songs play fine through iTunes and are also ok on my iPhone 4 and also used to play fine on the Nano but not any more.
The songs affected come from different places (CD Rips, Amazon etc) and looking at the file i can see nothing that could cause the problem.  I have created a blank itunes library and added the affected songs to it before syncing with my Nano but this still causes the same problem.  The Nano has been wiped but this doesnt help.  It is running version 1.2 of the software which i think is the latest.
I have taken it to the Genius Bar where it was wiped and some diagnostics run on it but this didnt help either.  I paid for a replacement 6th Gen Nano (it was out of warranty) but this nano exibited the same problem with the same songs.  I have been refunded the cost of the replacement but still have a very tiny brick at the moment that i cannot use.
It seems that the Nano doesnt like some of the songs for some reason and when going through the sync process it doesnt sync all of them even though they appear on the iPod the mp3 file may be missing when i look at it in finder.
As the song plays in iTunes and on my iPhone it is perplexing as to why it doesnt on the Nano.  Does anyone know of a way to identify if a song will not play on the Nano as at the moment i am putting them on there and seeing which work and which dont.  As they used to work on there i am not sure what to do.
Any suggestions would be greatfully recieved.
    Cheers
    Simon

  • Power Button Stuck on 6th Gen Nano

    Hi,
If the Power button gets stuck (in the "ON" position) on my 6th gen Nano, and the device is less than a year old, can I still get Apple to replace it with a new one --- even if all I have is just the serial number on the device and nothing else?
Or do I need the receipt, and original box & packaging, etc...
    Thanks.

You are still under warranty for a repair.  Call Apple tech support and report the problem to them.
Have you considered purchasing AppleCare?  Extends your warranty 2 more years.

  • 6th gen nano - headphone jack won't hold.

I just got the shiny new 6th gen nano from the 1st gen replacement program. I tried 3 different headphones and the connector won't stay in. It feels like the jack is too big. I was  using these headphones just fine with the 1st gen nano. Is the jack on the 6th gen different, or did I perhaps get a defective replacement?

Nothing wrong with that. Glad to hear that it resolved the issue.

  • 6th Gen Nano - Sound Check doesn't work

    Hi
The sound level on my 6th Gen Nano is all over the place. There is a big variance in volume from one song to the next which is both annoying and dangerous to my hearing. The Sound Check function is turned on in both the Nano settings and iTunes.
Does anyone know a fix to this before my ear-drums blow out?

Sound check is basically useless. Hasn't worked effectively on any model I've purchased. However, as others have pointed out, you can adjust the volume of a song so that your playlists don't cause public embarrassment. Simply do a control "i" on a particular song. In the "info" tab, you can increase or decrease the volume of a particular tune. However, if you make the adjustment, be sure to adjust all of the tune from that album. Otherwise, when you play the album, the song you tweaked will have a different volume from the rest of tunes on the album. It ain't a great fix... but it's better than what the programmers have done with sound check.

  • Is there anywhere I can still buy a 6th gen nano?

    Hi there,
My 6th gen nano was recently stolen. I'm desperate to replace it as I found it perfect for exercise. Does anyone know if there's anywhere I can buy another one? I've been looking online, and there are ebay options, but I'd rather buy one instore somewhere.
I'd really appreciate any feedback or guidance.
    Thanks!

I don't know of any store that is selling the 6th Gen and Apple has not offered refurbished models for a few months. You could try pawn shops, outlet stores, etc.
