6th generation nano/ windows 8 snafu deluxe

Hello,
I am a proud owner of a 6th generation ipod nano.
It, and my iphone 3GS (yes, it lives), are both not recognized my my laptop or iTunes.
I have unplugged and re-plugged. Nothing
I have removed and re-installed iTunes. Nada.
I have gone into device manager and found USB Mass Storage Device wih an exclamation (no indication of the iPod there). I have attempted updating the driver and reinstallation. No dice.
What else can I do? Is this a common problem since the update. My laptop is new (6 months old). Is there a patch from Microsoft/Apple that I must download?
Thanks,
CV

To anyone who sees this I managed to solve my own problem. After doing everthing recommended online unsuccessfully I tried this. Bear in mind this is with a 64 bit Windows 8.1 OS.
Here it is:
1.Control Panel
2.Programs
3. Uninstall or Change Programs
4. Uninstall iTunes
5. Uninstall Apple application support, mobile device support, software update (I even removed Bonjour and Quicktime).
6. Go to apple.com and download iTunes again from the beginning.
7. See if it works (hope it does)
You'll have to download Quicktime again, but no big deal. After I did this my laptop and iTunes finally recognize my nano and iPhone 3GS. In my control panel it appears that the other applications have also been restored (as you would expect). For those of you still stuck despite the recommendations online, I hope this helps you out.
Good luck!
