7.0.1 shared library/shuffle by album bug
Has anyone encountered this issue?
I have run into a very bizarre bug since upgrading to iTunes 7.0. It was not fixed in 7.0.1.
I have a large iTunes library shared from my Power Mac G5. Our household has two Mac laptops (1 MB, 1 MBP) from which we play that shared music through various Airport Expresses. We mostly listen to classical music (i.e. multi-movement/track works), so I organize the music collection with the work name in the Album field and then Shuffle by Album within the classical playlist.
Since upgrading to 7.0, the machine refuses to Shuffle by Album -- but only when playing from a playlist from a shared library. Instead, it will begin with the first album and play them in alphabetical order. Playing the same playlist, shuffled by album, locally on the sharing G5 works as expected. As I like to listen to my music in exactly this way this is a very irritating bug for me.
Another related but less irritating bug: when playing from this same shared library set to "Shuffle by Album," hitting "Play" while nothing is playing will play the first album alphabetically in the list, no matter what is selected. If I want to play a different track I have to select it and then double-click it.
Dual 1.8 G5, 15" CD MBP, white MB Mac OS X (10.4.8) iTunes 7.0.1
I have also experienced this problem, but it has acted a little different.
I have a large music library stored on an external hardrive (Lacie d2 Extreme) & have my iTunes playback settings for shuffle by album. I don't use playlists, I only like iTUnes to shuffle playback from my entire library.
iTUnes will begin @ song 2 or 3 of the album, play a couple songs from the album & then move to another album without playing the 1st album in it's entirety.
This is extremely annoying. Please help, anyone.

Music from shared library will not display by artist or album.
How do I set up home sharing to display music from shared library by artist and album?
I am not sure if the fix that cuatro476804 suggested is the issue here. I have also been experiencing freezing issues with my Apple TV since the latest Apple TV/iTunes updates. Here is the bug report I just submitted to Apple:
Since the last update to Apple TV or the last updates to iTunes (not sure which is the culprit) Apple TV freezes when trying to play music streamed from iTunes on a Mac.
I have an iMac running iTunes [11.01 (12)] and a 3rd gen Apple TV running the latest OS release as of 12-20-2012. Since the last software update for iTunes and Apple TV, the Apple TV will freeze when playing a song after about 10 - 20 seconds. This happens whether I am using my computer directly or when using the "remote" app on my iPhone 5. I can restart my song again by pressing play, but the song will freeze again after another 10 - 20 seconds.
I can temporarily cure the bug by unplugging my Apple TV for 5 seconds to cold start the gizmo, and then both iTunes and Remote seem to be able to stream without any issues.
but when I try to play music the next day, the same freezing issue occurs again like clockwork.
I thought this was just a rare buggy issue, maybe even a WiFi or other communication problem, but I have been playing tunes on my Apple TV for a couple years streamed from my iMac with not problems. This only started happening after the last software update. Again, not sure if this is the Apple TV update, or the iTunes 10.01 (12) update causing this.
Daily rebooting of the Apple TV is not an acceptable solution. Were this a Microsoft product, sure, but Apple product... its just supposed to work :-)
I hope others will report the same issue so this gets repaired soon.

I am using IPAD Mini. When I am searching for any particular song or album from my shared ITUNES folder, the search is conducted in the apple store and not on the shared library. How to search for the song in the shared library
Search for shared library is impossible, as far as I know. Searches supported - are local and internet.

Party Shuffling a shared library
Dear All,
Does anybody know if there is a way of party shuffling a shared library?
My music library lives downstairs in the living room, at my iMac, and is shared wirelessly with a windows laptop elsewhere in the house.
I don't generally listen by any method other than Party Shuffle - but I can't seem to do that on the itunes on the laptop.
I can play all the music in the shared library randomly by pressing the random button at the bottom left and double clicking on 'all artists', but this is really not as good as Party Shuffle (I like to sit down and prune the upcoming list depending on my mood / company).
If anybody can help I'd be much obliged.
Cheers,
Doug
iMac, purple, CRT Mac OS X (10.3.9) 512MB RAMIt's been that way ever since Party Shuffle appeared in iTunes.
One way I used to do it when I had my music library on a desktop computer and I was using a PowerBook was to use remote desktop software like VNC to control the remote computer.
Or if you quit out of iTunes on the remote computer and use file sharing to mount the remote file system you could hold the Option key down on your local computer and then select the library on the shared volume. I haven't tried this but I think it may work. Changing libraries was something introduced in the latest version of iTunes, although I don't think this was what they had in mind when introduced it. -
Party Shuffle with shared library
Is there anyway to use Party Shuffle on a remote computer with a shared library as the source? I have all my music on my G5 but my laptop is what I use during parties.

Remote app on iPad2 not showing iTunes interface on ATV2 shared library
I have an AppleTV 2 that's sharing an iTunes library via home sharing over Ethernet from a Mac Mini. Running Remote App on my iPhone 5S, I can control that library as expected. Running Remote App on my iPad2, however, I'm unable to see the main iTunes-like interface that lists songs, albums, artists, etc. on the shared library. While I can see the currently playing song at the top of the screen and have access to the Back, Pause, and Forward buttons, the main pane below that only shows the icons for Home Sharing and Using Gestures. Under Home Sharing, where it says "Tap the Apple TV button in the bottom left...," there's not Apple TV button, only "Devices." I can use the gestures interface in Remote App on the iPad2 to control playback, but I never see the main library interface. Any thoughts you have for remedying this would be really appreciated!
Well the response I got to the above post was outstanding!
Shall we put this in the bracket along with "If a tree falls in the forest with no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?"
If anyone is wondering, for my party I ended up using my Mac as the server for the iTunes DJ. And I discovered that if more than 5-7 people try to get onto it, it crashes the whole system and the music stops. Glorious. -
Is it possible to Sync an iPod (or iPhone) with a Shared Library?
I know this is a silly, basic question, but 6:30 AM is just too early for me to keep digging for the answer.
So, I have several computers at home. ONE of them is used to purchase and store all of my iTunes music. This same computer is used to sync several iPods. The entire library on this computer is shared. Two other computers in the house are Authorized on the same account and regularly play music stored on the "first" computer.
So here's the rub.
My duaghter just got a new iPhone. She has her own MAC. I'd like her to begin using her own computer to sync her iPod and iPhone.
Is it possible to sync her iPod and iPhone using HER computer (that is authorized on my account) and MY shared library?I don't think it is possible to sync an ipod to a shared library for copyright reasons. Sharing is great and simple for accessing and listening to other computer's music over a network, but to sync your ipod - I believe can only be done from that particular itune's music library. But here's how I work around this so that I don't have to have my 90 GB Music Folder copied on multiple computers:
Copy these files from your main computer (the one that has and controls your master itunes library) into the same location on any other computer on your network (say your daughter's computer): user/music/itunes/iTunes Music Library.xml & iTunes Library. Before copying them over to daughter's computer, remove the old files (maybe keep somewhere else just in case) and have itunes shut down. Then start up itunes on your daughter's computer and it should look identical to the main computer's itunes (and the same as the shared library). What you've esentially done is created a separate itunes library data base that can be managed on your daughter's computer but one that accesses the same actual music files that are on the main computer's Music Folder. To check go to Preferences/Advanced and you'll see that the Music Folder location is pointing to the same file as on the main computer (whose Music Folder is now being used as a sort of network music despository). You'll notice that when your daughter's computer starts itunes and plays a song, the main computer's hard drive where the Music Folder is stored will mount on her computer. So the main computer obviously has to be turned on, or more accurately, the location of the Music Folder (could be on an external hard drive) must be accessible over the network. Your duaghter can now create her own spearate playlists and sync her ipod to her own library which is accessing the same song files (Music Folder) as the main computer. And both of you can be playing from itunes at the same time independantly.
Here's the tricky part that takes some coordintation: Since you'll both be accessing and adding to the same huge Music Folder, you'll need to coordinate with eachother if you want to be able to have each computer's itunes database "see" any music that the other person has added or purchased. For purchasing or adding music to the music folder, both of you should have in Preferences/Advanced the "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" selection checked when purchasing music or adding music via burning. If your daughter, for example, buys an album and has this preference selected, then it will go to the Music Folder and she will have access to it. But the other computer doesn't know that this was added to the music folder and it won't show up in that computer's itunes. For itunes to knwo a song is in it's Music Library it has to add it to it. SO, from this other computer, go to File/Add to Library and navigate to the location within the Music Folder and then select the newly purchased album and it will now show up in this itunes as well - BUT before you do this you should UNcheck the "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" preference so that the album is not duplicated in the Music Folder. Then if this computer wants to purchase an album, you need to have this checked again. Basically if your doing the original adding you have to have the "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" checked. If your simply letting your itunes know that something was added then have the "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" unchecked before you add it to your library. And if someone creates a playlist that the other wants, you can still share eachother's libraries (even though your accessing the same Music Folder) or even export the playlist and import it into the other computer.
Sounds tricky but it's actually pretty easy and allows each person to sort of control his/her itunes and sync their own ipods/iphones all from the same Music Folder. -
IPhoto 9.4.3 Crashes when importing from Shared Library
I have an early 08 Mac Pro with Mountain Lion running iPhoto 9.4.3. I'm attempting to import a good nubmer of photos from a shared library which resides on my MBP also running 10.8.2 and iPhoto 9.4.3. It starts to import, but after about 10-20 photos (Nikon Raw) it crashes. Consistently. Deleted plist, didn't fix it. Created a new test library, same issue. I'm attempting to copy over several hundred at a time, which I know is ridiculous, but a) I have too many to import going one by one or 20 by 20, and b) it didn't have a problem earlier when doing the same thing. I was importing >300 at a time last week.
My library is large, >100gb if that helps.
Here is the crash report. Please help me figure out what is going on!!!!

If that's the case make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory. -
Shuffling iPod albums through iTunes7
Hi everyone,
I am ready to tear my hair out - since upgrading to iTunes 7, I can no longer shuffle by album when playing songs from my iPod. What I like to do is keep all of my music on the iPod and listen to music with the iPod in disk mode. The iTunes library works fine - it remembers my sort settings, it shuffles randomly by album (as I have it set to do), it keeps the browser window open. However when I switch to my iPod device, it does not do any of those things. Every time I plug my iPod in, the browser is closed, the sort order is back to a default, and when I try to shuffle by album, it just starts playing the first song on the list and goes straight through! I have checked to make sure the Preferences are set correctly (they are), and I have ensured that the shuffle button in the bottom left corner is lit.
I know I saw posts about this when iTunes 7 first came out, and as far as I can tell nothing has been done about it. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks!Hi there,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

Shared Library Doesn't Display Events
I want to share my iPhoto library with another user on the same computer. So in Preferences I turned on sharing. When the other user logs in and selects the shared library they just get a panel with thousands of loose photos unlike the original library that has them separated into Events. How do I fix that? Thanks!
There's nothing to fix, you can't share the Events. What you can do is share Albums. You can quickly create albums from Events simply by selecting all the pics in an Event (command-a) and going Shift-command-n (or File -> New Album from Selection)

Have new iMac with iPhoto sharing turned on. When the shared library is clicked the library disappears or starts to load then disappears? What is wrong?
Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then your current library is damaged and needs repair.
Therefore make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If you experience the same problem with the test library then try this basic fix a try: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that fails a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/ folder,
Then install iPhoto from the source it came on originally.

Playlists not showing up in shared library
I just set up the iMac on which my entire music library resides in an upstairs room and want to share via my home network with the iMac downstairs which is hooked up to my hi-fi. Unfortunately most of the library doesn't show up. The majority of the library is single album playlists ripped in Apple Lossless. What is showing up is the remainder - various folders and their contents which were ripped in AAC.
Other contents are fine - podcasts and iTunes U materials - but most of my music is missing.
I could of course stream from the upstairs machine via an Airport Express to the hi-fi. But then I would have to go upstairs every time I want to change the playlist.....
Wonder if anyone else has encountered this problem. Could it be related to the fact that the source iMac is running 10.5.8 and the relay iMac is running 10.6.2?
Thanks in advance for your help.Apologies - the problem was that there are two user accounts on the source iMac and I had set iTunes on the wrong user account to Sharing on the network. All fine now.

Sharing library between computer over a network
Hi,
I'm trying to share 2 different ip libraries on 2 different computers. But one has ip4 and the other one has ip6. Do both iPhoto have to be of the same level (ip4 vs ip6) to be able to share?
Reason is that I see the icon of the other library on each iphoto, but on the ip6 on my laptop, (trying to access my G5 with ip4,) i see the icon of the G5 ip4 and as soon as I click on it, it disapear and I get a message that there was an error with sharing library.
On the other way around, when I try to access the ip6 laptop from the ip4 G5, I click on it and the icon remains in the album sections, and it get de-selected automatically, and it reverts to the root ip library being selected. The Macbook/laptop icon remains in the album column, but cannot remain selected. I get NO sharing error on this one.
Apple website and help menu claim that to share you only need 10.2.6 and iP4 and above!
Please advise!
michelHi Brie,
I'm not sure exactly what are the 6 steps exactly.... but I did all the check box in ip preferences of both computer.
I found this in the iP help menu
To share your photos on a network:
1-Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
2-Click Sharing at the top of the Preferences window.
3-Select the "Share my photos" checkbox, and then choose your entire library or only the albums, slideshows, or books you want to share.
4-Type a name for your shared items in the "Shared name" field, and a password if desired.
The shared name you enter appears in the iPhoto Source list on computers set up to look for shared photos on your network. If you select "Require password," users will need to enter that password before they can see your shared photos.
DONE ( did not use password)
To look for shared photos:
1-Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
2-Click Sharing at the top of the Preferences window.
3-Select the "Look for shared photos" checkbox.
DONE
Not sure what other step there are to do if any!

Retaining View Options in Shared Library
FYI: i'm running Mac OS 10.7.3 & iTunes 10.5.3
i have my library on a Mac Mini in the house. i use my MacBookPro for everything. My library is too large to keep on my laptop, so when i'm home, i just pop open iTunes and select the Mac Mini's library in the SHARED section to listen to tunes.
essentially two issues...
1) i hated that every time i created a new playlist, i had to re-select the View Options as i wanted them to be. this was just solved by using the Assimilate View Options script that i found during my investigations. it works fine for whatever i have on my local library (which isn't much), but it does not work for anything in the shared library.
1b) sidenote issue with that: when using it on the local library, it does great with choosing all the columns that i have setup. it does not, however, deal with the column widths & order nor which view mode i want (Album List + Always Show Artwork). argh.
2) so i continued my journey to finding the right app/plug/help/hack/whatever and ran across the Change Hidden iTunes Preferences script/app. this too works great for creating new playlists with the view options i want already in place (by checking the Changing view settings is global option). but this also only works on my local library and not the shared library views.
2b) sidenote with this one: this has the same issue as 1b above - exactly. arghx2.
NOTE: i realize i cannot actually change the view options on my shared libraries iTunes on the Mini - i just want the iTunes on my MBP to retain either the view options i want/set when using the shared library -or- have the view options that i actually have on the Mini's iTunes Library to display when viewing thru my MBP.
does that all make sense?
any thoughts would be appreciated.
THANKS.This is by design. The artwork is not sent when browsing the shared library to avoid swamping the network. Sending the artwork for every track would generate a lot of network traffic.

Need help with Aperture library duplicating all 'Albums' under 'Projects' library
Fairly new to Aperture but I've tried to search many times for solutions to this issue.
Scenario: In the Library, I have 3 albums under the 'Albums' view at the bottom that I created. They were never associated with a project so they were always kept down here. This I believe is normal. What is not normal is that this morning the same 3 albums started showing up in an Albums folder under one of my projects in the 'Project' view above it. At first when I clicked on the project it showed the entire library (+20k photos) despite saying only 14 images were in this folder. I fixed this by moving the 14 photos into a different project with a different name. But the Albums folder remains. It is a direct mirror of the albums below (same name, same photos), and when I delete an album from the 'Projects' view it deletes the same album below. Same thing if I remove a picture from the album above, it does it below. I have other albums under specific projects that do not show up under 'Albums' view in the Library. Again I belive this is correct.
Making this more frustrating is that I can't just simply move or delete the duplicate Albums above and it is under a 'Project' that doesn't make any sense (e.g., under a Project named 'Travel' but all albums are related to 'Birthday Parties'). I tried creating new albums and then deleting the old ones, but then it actually removes the 'Album' section of my library and I don't know how to get it back as I'd still like to keep that functionality.
I have also repaired and rebuilt the database twice with no improvement. One other point is that I believe this is officially an iPhoto library, but this version of Aperture and iPhoto supposedly allows for sharing without any issues. I tried repairing via iPhoto as well, but no luck there.
Can anyone help or suggest solutions? Thanks in advance.léonie wrote:

The sections in the Library Inspector have hidden controls to Hided or Show them. The controls will appear, if you hover the mouse close to the right border of the Inspector panel. There you can toggle the visibility of the different sections on and off.
The whole Subsection (ALBUM in ALL CAPS) is gone, no remant left (so no Hide/Unhide button). I can hide the PROJECTS, SHARED, RECENT, ETC, but ALBUMS is again gone.
Just to be better able to understand what is happening in your library:
At first when I clicked on the project it showed the entire library (+20k photos) despite saying only 14 images were in this folder.
This looks to me, like your albums were "Smart Albums" and not regular albums. Regular albums don't change the contents, when you open them for browsing. Or reflect changes in other library items.
What do the icons of your "albums" look like? Is there a "gears" icon on it? Then your album is a smart album, and I'd try to update the smart settings for the album/
Nope. No gears and I've never used a Smart Album. They were all part of my old iPhoto library but that import was done 2-3 months ago and this issue just started today. Right now the Album is just a folder under PROJECTS, with each individual Album beneath having icons that look like two photos stacked (i.e., normal albums). Also, when I click on the main Album's folder it reads 'TopLevelAlbums' as the header on the top of the main section. When I click on any other project, folder, or individual album it just reads the same name as the header....this was the first clue to me that something was wrong...besides the ALBUM folder having +20k pictures in it.
Aperture 3.5.1 . I'm going to try creating the new library and see if it fixes it. Thanks for the help.
