7.0.2 Stuttering problem

Hello all,
I know this problem seems to be common but my music and videos are stuttering badly in iTunes 7.0.2.For some reason iTunes (or quicktime) shoot my CPU usage up to 100% and I get really choppy playback. I have a 3Ghz processor, which should be able to handle running iTunes.
I've searched the forums and have tried many suggestions offered to fix the problem, but it persists.
Have their been any break-throughs in this area?
If not, can I e-mail Apple for support? I've been unable to find an e-mail address to direct my concerns to.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I have recently posted a similer question under using Itunes with windows XP. I too, have experienced significant playback issues after upgrading to v7.0 then 7.0.1 then 7.0.2.
The last 5 seconds of playback sends my computer into never never studders and 100% cpu usage. I too have cleaned, reinstalled, made sure all drivers were the latest including sound and xphome, followed all setting change suggestions on these bulletin boards etc. etc. etc. Nothing solves the issues.
Soo, I like many others, have had to revert back to v6 after much frustration trying to get any version of 7 to work. I am in the proces of taking my entire 3500 song library and converting to windows media player 11. I don't like having to go over to the "dark side" but I have been left with no choice by the folks at Apple who seem to be in denial that anyone is having issues with v7. My guess it is their attempt at gapless playback that is really sending my computer to the brink.
As Itunes "customers" one might think Apple might take a more proactive approach and let us all know really what they are doing to solve all these issues. I do realize that for some folks v7 works. I am definitely NOT one of them.

  • Stuttering problem after update to 6.0.6

I'm getting that annoying stuttering problem for the first time. Whenever the playhead gets close to the end of a clip, it freezes up and then picks up a few frames after the start of the next one.
I've tried everything, including cleaning up my hard disk, tinkering with playback preferences. Oddly, this seems to have appeared after the update to 6.0.6. Before that, everything was working brilliantly. Am I missing something?

No way to revert back as far as I know.
I believe I was able to correct the problem. I'm not exactly sure how but this is what I did. I went through and cleaned up every project and all stray FCP files that were no longer in use. I then loaded a project off an external drive with a very large project on it, and what do you know, everything worked fine.
I went back to the projects I was having trouble with and completely deleted them. The only thing I saved was the raw footage I had pulled off a DVD. I started a new session, imported the footage and everything worked.
I don't know if perhaps the format of the footage was the issue but I seem to be back in business.
    Good luck Elliott.

  • Avoiding preview stuttering problems

I am creating a new post here as I marked the last one I posted on this subject as answered.
In that post I asked would a new graphics card help to eliminate the severe stuttering caused by my windows xp machine (2 intel P4 processors 3.2) failing to decompress the MP4 files from my Sony NEX-5 quickly enough? The answer was an unequivocal NO as it was the processors, not the card.
Since then I have been doing some experimentation:
I downloaded trial versions of Cyberlink Power Director and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10. The latter stuttered worse than PE but the Cyberlink app had almost faultless previews - no stuttering. Unfortunately it is a pretty horrible programme otherwise, and any case I am used to Premiere having use an early version of PP for years, so I experimented some more:
In PE I created a project with a project setting of PAL-AVCHD-HD 1081i25, loaded some MP4 clips taken with theNEX 5 on the MP4 1440 x 1080 setting and then burnt the project to DVD.
I then saved the movie as an AVI, removed the original MP4 clips and imported the AVI file I had just made. The project asked me if I wanted to change the project settings to match the clip and and I said yes. I then burned this to a DVD.
I then deleted the AVI clip and imported the original MP4 clips (into what is now effectively a PAL-DV-Widescreen 48KHz project setting I imagine). This time I was not asked if I wanted to change the settings but a red line appeared above the clips indicating they needed rendering. I rendered them and  - voila! No stuttering - perfectly smooth preview of the MP4 clips. I then burned this to DVD.
Next I compared the DVDs on a Sony 42inch HD TV. No difference! All three of very good quality, at least to my eyes..
So what is happening here? When I rendered the clips in the PAL DV project was it turning them into  AVI files because of the project settings? And is it that the first DVD (with the MP4 clips straight from the camera), which I would have expected to be of better quality than the other two, was not actually producing a HD DVD inspite of the camera and project setting?
Is the only way I am going to get true HD to set the camera to AVCHD and burn to Blu-Ray?
If any one has knowledge of these things I would love to hear from you as while I seem to have found an answer to the stuttering I would love to know what is going on and if I am fooling myself. Many thanks.

    Thanks for the reply.
I have not explained myself very well.
There is no problem with the DVDs - whatever settings I use to edit, the DVDs play very well, smooth and reasonably high quality in my estimation..
And as far as I know there is no interlacing going on as I am not using the camera's highest avchd setting (which is interlaced), only the 1440x1080 MP4.
The problem is with the editing previews, which when I open an HD project and import my MP4 camera files is very jerky to the point of being almost unusable at times, with long waits during operations. A look in Window Task Manager shows both CPUs maxing out all the time. According to the reply I had from an earlier post, this is because my CPUs are not up to the job of decompressing the MP4 files on the fly.
What I have found is that if I import my MP4 files into a project with DV settings, I get a red line above the timeline. If I then render the clips, the editing improves dramatically - no stuttering at all and no long waits after mouse clicks or key presses and the CPUs only working at about 50%. Of course it can take a while to render a number of clips, but I can go and do something else while that is happening and when I return the editing goes like clockwork.
My question is - what is happening to the quality of the video? I cannot see any difference in output (DVDs) whatever project settings I use, they all seem equally good. So hopefully I have found an answer to the preview stuttering problem. But I suspect I am not getting real HD from any of them. To do this I imagine I need to set the camera to AVCHD rather than 1440x1080 MP4 and burn to Blu-ray. This I have not tried yet as I do not have a Blu-Ray burner.
My problem is my ignorance of what PE is doing to the MP4 files when it renders them. And why, if I set the project settings to HD 1080i25 instead of PAL DV and work directly on the unrendered MP4 clips (and put up with the stuttering) do I not see a visible increase in quality when I burn the DVD? Is there some sort of levelling going on during the DVD coding?

  • The stuttering problem is solved, I think, I hope, Oh I hope so!

Thanks to a lot of help form people on this forum and an Apple specilist on iMovie here is what I have done.
I spent over an hour hours on the phone with a specialist on iMovie today. We ran tests to try to see what was causing the stuttering. He suggested that I try setting up another account and try to duplicated the problem in the test account. I found that impractical because I could not get to any of my sounds or movies that I had made in my profile.
Here is what I am going to try to do. I logged back into my profile and opened a movie that is stuttering. I deleated the music that I had in the lower sound track. that did not stop the stuttering. Next I opened a new movie and copied half of my voice narration into the upper sound track in the new movie. No stuttering. I copied the other half into the upper sound track, the stuttering is back. Discouraged.
Next I deleated the second half of the narration and no stuttering. I copied and pasted all but the last 9 clips of the narration and no stuttering. I saved the movie and quit iMovie. I reopened the file and NO STUTTERING. Next I will copy and paste the 59 photographs. Everything is working great, NO STUTTERS. I also copied some narration from another movie and still NO STUTTERS.
Karl Perersen described how to copy music files to a disk in the AIFF format and I have done that. I am going to finish the movie pictures, effects and narration before I put the music into my movie. And you can bet I will rename the file and make a backup.

I am making several movies of old family pictures that I will use to make a DVD. I have been working on this project for about a year and a half so I have used several versions of iLife. This current movie is only about 7 minutes long, it has about 60 photos and just over 100 clips of narration. the narration is my voice using the iSight camera as a mic.
I am trying to keep good records of the problems that I have experienced making these movies. Maybe this will help someone else. There have been several posts to this forum of other people having similar problems. I had no problems until I updated to iLife 6.0.2. Once I started trying to use iMovie 6.0.2 everything fell apart. The first thing that happened was that I got a dialog box as iMovie is loading that tells me that one of my video cards is not "Quartz Extreme" compatible.
My computer is one of the first Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5's that were sold. I don't remember the year. It has 2 GB of memory. I have two internal hard-drives, the 150 GB that came in the machine and I installed another 250 GB internal hard-drive. I also have a 115 GB and a 400 GB hard-drive, these are external drives. I have used three monitors since well before I bought the G5. The video card that Apple installed is a Radeon 9600 Pro, it is Quartz Extreme compatible. I had a Radeon VGA added when I bought the computer, it is not Quartz Extreme compatible. iMovie would run but the effects would not work properly.
The first problem that I had to deal with was the problem with the non-Quartz Extreme compatible video card. I called Apple, explained my computer system to a "specialist" upon his recommendation I bought another Radeon 9600 Pro video card only to find out that the board only fits in the AGP. There is only one AGP slot in the G5, all of us users should know that "Right" ? I called Apple back, got another "Specialist", he tells me he knows all about a Mac because he is a "Specialist", he says get a Radeon 9200. I will fit into one of the PCI slots and it is Quartz Compatible. I got the video card and installed the card, same problem, it is not Quartz Extreme compatible. I am a bit irritated at this point so I call Apple back and get another "Specialist". After explaining the problem he tells me that Apple does not test any of the video cards to see what will or will not work. He suggests that I call Radeon and nVIDIA since they make most of the video cards for the Mac. I learned nothing from them. Some one on the forum suggested that I disconnect the monitor cable from my third monitor. I did not think that it would work but it did. Now I can use iMovie and the effects do work. However, I am short one monitor. Once you use three you are spoiled with all of the monitor space.
Once I got the hardware to work I opened one of the movies that I had not completed before upgrading to 6.0.2. It had the "Stutters" so bad that I could no longer work on it. I opened a movie that I had completed before the upgrade, it stuttered also. I opened several others and they all stuttered. They will all burn to DVD and play just fine but I could do no more editing on them because of the stuttering.
If you have read the first posts in this discussion you know that I think that I have found a work-a-round to the stuttering problem. I hope that Apple will correct the software problem with an update before I have to redo all of my movies.
I had to start over this morning on the movie that I was working on yesterday, my narration was all out of sync with my pictures. But, it will be a good test to see if I can repeat the process and not have the stutters. For some reason if I copy and paste all of the narration at one time it has a slight stutter. So I had to copy in about thirds.

  • Audio stuttering problems with certain exported MP4 files

I'm currently running Captivate 6.1.0.319 on my old and decrepit Pentium 4 machine that has 4GB of RAM and is running Windows 7 SP1. I'm developing an online training course on RoboHelp 10 for Udemy, and they require all lecture files to be in MP4 format. Unfortunately, some of the MP4 files I generate from Captivate have audio stuttering starting a few seconds into the generated video and nothing I try fixes the problem.
All the videos are being recorded with video dimensions of 1360 x 978 pixels. I import the .cptc file I recorded into the .cptx file, and then I import an MP4 audio file into the .cptx file. When I finish editing the .cptx file, I publish it to an MP4 file using the highest video settings and the highest variable bitrate audio settings.
I have tried the following to try to fix the problem:
    Turned off SWF compression.
Created a new .cptx file and copied the slide from the problem .cptx file into the new one, and published that new .cptx file.
Disabled all software operating in the foreground and the background.
Tried generating the MP4 file on my laptop; the laptop runs the same version of Captivate on Windows 8.
As I said, Captivate generates some MP4 files perfectly without any stuttering, and others have the stuttering problem. If this problem sounds familiar, it's because I wrote a couple of messages about this a few months ago and despite some good suggestions, I wasn't able to solve the problem. I've spent my time during the past few months trying to find another program that will convert SWF files to one of the formats Udemy supports -- MP4, MOV, or FLV -- without success. Captivate exports to SWF and HTML5 format files without any trouble at all. But MP4 generation is spotty and I need to get this resolved so I can get this project off my plate and start making money off it.
If you have any further questions, please let me know. I look forward to hearing your suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Eric Butow

    Hi,
I am having the same issue and cannot figure out what is causing it, as it occurs randomly - but fairly frequently  - when I publish to mp4. And it is not tied to the project - seems to be something happening during the publishing. The issue might occur one time when pubishing a project and if republished again it may or may not occur again. I would be very interested in finding exactly what is causing this and any step that are tested and proven for getting away from the problem.

  • Any stuttering problems in FCE like there is in iMovie6?

There are several people experiencing severe stuttering problem in iMovie HD 6.x -- jerky video and stuttering audio during playback in iMovie. It's so bad, that it makes editing impossible. (See the iMovie HD forum and a topic heading called "Lousy iMovie HD ....."). This has nothing to do with HD video, but seems to be triggered by too many extracted audio clips in the edited movie. There may be other triggers that may cause the stuttering.
As a result, I think some of us are glancing towards FCE for salvation. For many amateurs, FCE may be overkill, but it's very frustrating not knowing when (or if) Apple will fix this problem. They've been informed of it through feedback.
Are any FCE users experiencing similar stuttering problems?_____
(I've seen a couple of instances -- of jerky motion -- in this forum, but those problems seemed to have been resolved).
I'm also concerned by a comment made within this FCE forum about common problems importing iMovie projects into FCE. Is this really a problem?____

I don't think anyone can give a definitive answer to using iMovie projects in FCE.
Some people may get away with it but to use it on a regular basis would be tempting fate.
So the answer to this question is a rather unsatisfactory "yes and no".
Regarding stuttering in FCE - this is not a common problem and I suspect that whenever it occurs it is down to user-error - either doing something wrong or using unsuitable equipment.
I am assuming that your references to stuttering are NOT due to interlacing problems. If they are , FCE has several quite efficient Deinterlace and Flicker Filters.

  • Stuttering Problem

    Hello,
Recently, my project started "stuttering" whenever I play it. When I first open it, it works smooth -- but after about 30 min of editing, it plays back jittery like a scratched DVD would. I'm hoping someone has an idea or maybe a setting to fix it.
I am running FCP 7.0.2 off of a quad core MacPro running 10.6.4. My sequence settings are 1920x1080 HDTV60i. I have tried normal restart program/computer. I have used 2.83TB of a 4TB drive.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Shane.
Were you able to help this person sort out his stuttering playback problem? I have searched this forum for an hour, and I can't seem to find much about it... which amazes me, because there are about 500 posts about on Creative Cow.
In a nutshell, from a fully rendered timeline, containing straightforward MiniDV footage and nothing fancy, the playback stutters in what appears to be a perfectly regular pattern... about once a second, it seems to me. Almost looks as though it is connected to the dropped frames in the timecode or something. The playback blinks like a ticking clock. Not just on my external monitor either... the timeline playhead itself seems to stutter.
If Apple has released an update to FCP that fixes this issue, I must have missed it. As far as I am aware, I have loaded all updates that Software Update has offered to install, and the problem persists.
I have also tried trashing the preferences and reinstalling the little Quicktime file suggested by many on the Cow's thread as fixing the problem. While it seems to work temporarily, my stutter always returns.
I'm not sure how to find out the number of the last ProAps update I installed. Perhaps if you know which update is supposed to have fixed this problem, and can tell me where to find some sort of history or installed updates or something, I can check to see if I am current.
Otherwise, I'd appreciate anything you can offer that might help. I'm moving into a busy time, and I simply can't stand not being able to playback my timeline and be confident that I'm seeing what it really looks like.
    Any ideas?

See if this is applicable to your situation...
If you have the HP Power Assistant/Power Manager installed, uninstall it and either live without (I don't see the real value in this program as W7 has plenty of power settings you can modify), or install an earlier version of the software.

  • AIR 2.7.1: Help with sound stuttering problem in IOS!

    Hi all,
I need to play audio in the background but unfortunately, it came out unstable:
    - On the 1st run after installing, it'll play fine until it loops, that's when the audio goes out completely.
    - On subsequent runs, the audio plays and loops but it stutters.
I have scoured the forums and googled but couldn't find much advice other than the audio settings to use:
    - MP3 Compression
    - 128 kbps Bit Rate
    - 44.1 kHz sample rate
The audio file is in the library and I call it up with the Sound object.
Some additional info, I wrote a custom script to loop my sound:
    - I have 2 SoundChannels
    - I use a Timer to track the audio progress
    - When the 1st channel is almost up, I  play the 2nd channel; the 'old' channel fades out and stops while the 'new' channel plays and fades in
I'm not sure what else I need to look for but any pointers will be great!
    Thanks!

    @pixelshocks,
This is strange. I am not able to reproduce the stuttering on the app you shared with the bug, https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=2988720, using the AIR 3.
I tried playing audio continuously in foreground, and then after bringing it back up from background. In both the cases, the stuttering doesn't happen anymore. Can you please list the steps to reproduce the problem?
    @saariko
For AIR on iOS, you need to download the Windows/Mac sdk. There is no separate runtime installer on iOS.

  • Animation stuttering problem in final cut 6

I am using some animations that I created in After Effects in a Final Cut Pro sequence. The sequence is set at DV/DVCPRO -NTSC 23.98. Every time i render the files they stutter. I tried to render the the animations out of after effects with a proress codec and they played fine in the timeline but when I did a final export the animations stutter again. I thought it might be a problem with my animations so I tried to use an old animation that I created a year ago with the same frame rate. It stuttered as well. I then opened an old final cut file created in FCP 5 and played that exact same animation in the old file. It was still connected to the old render files so it played fine. But if I dragged that exact same animation file into the the same timeline and rendered it again it stuttered. Something is obviously wrong with FCP 6. I took the animations two 2 other computers running FCP 6 and they all did the same thing. I then brought it to a Computer running FCP 5 and they rendered and played fine.
I have to get the project out but I have no way to render it out without it stuttering.
    Any ideas?

DV/DVCPRO -NTSC 23.98. Every time i render the files they stutter
You will need to precisely define "stuttering." The term gets thrown around here like everyone knows what it means.
It is physically impossible for a 23.98 clip from After Effects to not render properly inside a 23.98 FCP sequence, assuming the field settings match between the two projects. So, when you say stuttering, are frames repeating, holding, skipping, speeding up, slowing down? Is it always the exact same frames that do this stuttering thing or does the artifact move? The answers will make a huge difference on where we'd send you next. But I gotta warn you, debugging this stuff is almost impossible by remote control.

  • Audio stuttering problem/ solutions?

I am using the new mac pro 2013. I am routing my audio through the display port to HDMI direct into the receiver and then monitor out from the receiver.
But the audio is stuttering no matter the source. And it is making jobs especially video editing almost impossibe when i need to sync up sound. Worse after playing the clip for a few seconds, the audio even appears to be off.
Does anyone have this problem? And is anyone from apple aware of this? I tried turning the audio to using internal speakers and i could also tell the itunes playback music is stuttering.
    Any help?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Has anyone had any success solving the stuttering problem in iTunes?

A few months ago, my iTunes began skipping after playing fine for twenty minutes or so.  The skips or stutters then get closer and closer together until it is simply unlistenable.  A restart finds the tunes that skipped before now working fine, but with new ones eventually stuttering.  My RAM and HD space are in good shape.  Advisors have offered assistance, but to no avail.  (Neither was familiar with the problem).  Judging from the number of entries one gets when Googling "iTunes skipping", I'd say this is a well-documented problem, yet nobody connected with Apple seems to know exactly what I'm talking about.  I've tried fixing permissions, re-installing Snow Leopard, resetting PRAM, safe-booting;  my next step is uninstalling and re-installing iTunes, which disheartens me because of all the people who have tried it to no avail.  Any ideas?

To be honest if you had experienced it you would know exactly what i am talking about. I am running a top of the range retina display and get a bad laging issues when doing something a simple as maybe changing the volume of a kick in ultra beat and it will freeze for 30 odd seconds. it shouldnt be happening with such a powerful machine. I have reinstalled it, i have tried it in loew res i have tried it in 64 bit all of which still have the same issue. Even after being in to the apple store and being on the phone numerous times i still havent come to a conclusion therefore i was trying to gauge if anyone else had the same issues or if apple just need to hurry up and release an update.

  • Weird Netflix Stuttering problem

When using Firefox to watch video on netflix, I experience a bizarre stuttering (low framerate, motion is jerky) when viewing in fullscreen only. This problem is non-existant on Safari and Chrome, but FF is my preferred browser so I would like to use it for netflix. I have the latest version of silverlight, and am using an early 2011 MBP 13'', Lion 10.7.4. Any solutions?

I have noticed this too, and it seems to be because of too much stuff running on your computer. As Firefox isn't nearly as streamlined on the Mac as it is on PC, I'd stick to using Safari to use Netflix.
There really isn't anything you can do to help Firefox, except send them an e-mail about it and hope for the best.
    Hope this helped sloughricher!

    Good Day
I have a Toshiba Satellite p200 -mb1  PSPB 0C, MB105c       that has the subject problems.  After extensive reading and searching I continue to end up back here.
The problem is consistent, it occurs (the stuttering) when ever I move the pointer around fairly quickly, when I type, when the screen saver is active (it runs for a few seconds freezes then resumes continually) and when I play videos and music.
After reading many post about driver conflicts I began the extensive search for XP drivers for this model to no avail.  I was even at the European site recommended in on of the posts but it doesn't have the model in question.
I would appreciate any help you can render!!
