7.1.5 update disabled my MPEG-2 Component?

i recently updated to the 7.1.5 version of quicktime
everything seems to be working fine, i still have my pro capabilitys and the internet plug-in functions fine, but now the MPEG-2 component appears to not be working/missing. I frequently am working with video projects, and the MPEG-2 component that came with my Final Cut installation isn't working in some applications since i updated quicktime. Final Cut itself works just fine, but i am trying to use some footage from a DVD i burned awhile ago, and the program i use to convert the VOB file into a DV stream, MPEG Streamclip, is now telling me that i need to install the MPEG-2 Quicktime 6 component
any ideas?
thanks

There are two versions of the MPEG-2 Playback Component (6.3 and 6.4) and QT 7 needs you to use 6.4.
You can get a free copy by logging in at the Apple Store and reviewing your "Software Downloads History.

  • Is it possible to update only the Shared Install component?

We are running MDM 7.1 with all components at 7.1.06.211.  We opened an OSS ticket due to an issue with CCMS monitoring and SAP told us to upgrade the MDM Shared Install component to at least 7.1.06.230.  We want to use sapinst --> update to apply the patch but cannot find a way to select only the shared install component.  Is the correct procedure to:
    1. In sapinst on the "Update - MDM Instances" screen, select  "Update all MDM instances of the SAP system" (MDS00, MDIS01, MDSS02)
    ...and then...
    2. In sapinst on the "Update - Content Archives" screen, extract only the shared.sar archive and deselect the others (mds.sar, mdis.sar, mdss.sar).
Will this procedure update the shared installation component only and not the others?  Is this possible?  If not, will all of the other components have to be updated even though SAP said to update only the shared installation component?
We have searched OSS and SDN but cannot find a clear explanation of how this should work.  Note 1481741 states that all components within the same SP level (e.g. 7.1.06.xx) are compatible and recommends upgrading only the component affected by the fix, which is what we want to do.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks and regards,

Camoracer got it - my work computer has limited hardware/system resources. It can handle iTunes audio, but iTunes video slows it to a crawl and makes it so I can't get any work done. There are video podcasts I'd like to listen to at work, but can't for that reason. So I'd like to just play the audio stream from the podcast while disabling the video stream. The video portion isn't necessary anyway, it's usually just a talking head and not anymore informative than the audio portion alone.

  • MPEG-2 Component issue, no playback

Hey all, any suggestions are appreciated!
I had a recent hard drive failure so I had to re-install all my apps (G4 Al PB 1.25GHz 10.4.11). I author showreels in DVD SP4 so I have a lot of .m2v content. I had the MPEG-2 Component on my old system, so just purchased it again: installation went fine but QT Pro 7.5.5 still won't play any of the .m2v files. All those files were on an external so they weren't corrupted by the drive failure - DVD SP4 still reads them fine, just QT won't play them (says 'can't open'/'this is not a movie file'). The 'QuicktimeMPEG2.component' is there in the /System/Library/Quicktime folder, so I don't know what's wrong. It's not a major issue, just an annoyance. Strangely, I can export to .m2v just not play them. Any ideas?
    Dee

The only difference I noticed was Quicktime version, it worked on ver 6.7.2 but didn't on ver 7.6.9 and both have the same mpeg 2 component version 6.4.1.
QT v7.6 and later (excluding QT X) requires the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component v7.6 update.

  • Quicktime MPEG-2 component missing

Hi, I've purchased MPEG-2 component a long time ago but it's now gone from my hard disk, got a receipt and everything, but unfortunately it's not in my purchase history (its span being only 18 months) - how am I able to redownload the codec without buying it again? Whom should I contact?
Please don't ask me to find the appropriate helpdesk email or phone number, as the Apple web site is a mess and really not too helpful, I wouldn't be writing this here otherwise.
    Thanks for understanding my agony.

My original purchase was back in 2002 and the last update is still available in my download area. (I believe QTKirk's purchase even pre-dates my own and was still available to him the last time someone asked this same question.)

You would have to contact Customer Service (i.e., Apple Store Customer Service 1-800-676-2775). Be sure to have a copy of your receipt handy when you call as they will probably need both your account and purchase information.

  • MPEG-2 component doesn't work anymore

    Hi,
I now recognized, that the MPEG-2 component doesn't work anymore. I don't know since which moment, but maybe since the last QuickTime update. I reinstalled it, but it didn't solve the problem.

I can open a m2v fil but there is no content and it displays like a sound file.
If there is no display screen above the controller (i.e., looks like an audio file), check the Inspector (or Properties) window to see what the QT player thinks is contained in the file. Also, what is the source of the file? Files split by windows users and posted on the internet frequently open in this manner without a display screen. Basically, if the QT MPEG-2 Playback component is not working, the file will not open at all. Also, M2V files are normally paired with a separate AIFF file. If you have QT Pro, open the Properties window and check the "Resource" pointer for your M2V track.
I can't find where it is installed either.
Did you check the root "Library > QuickTime" folder on your start-up drive? Also, did you install the correct codec? Two versions should be contained in the image file. You want the one that says "For QuickTime 6.4 and later & Intel Macs."

  • Mpeg 2 component

The mpeg 2 component I purchased does not appear to be working.  Here is the background.  I have a file that is mpeg 2, I am trying to open it, in the past, I have done everything short of buying the quicktime component.  The only program that can successfully [and I say that with a grain of salt] open the video is VLC.  Every time I try to convert it it comes out skittery with the VLC frame around it.  I finally broke down and bought the QT component but I still can't opent he video in QT, there is just no video at all.  I am crazy confused and hope that I am missing something very obvious.
    Thanks

    Cheers Kirk,
It`s slightly confusing, you`d expect a brand new purchase/download to be the latest version!
    Many thanks

  • Mpeg-2 component not working

    Hello,
I have some footage that requires the mpeg-2 component. As I do not have final cut I bought this off apple and installed, but it doesn't work. I have searched many forums and followed the advice and made sure it is in the right folder but nothing works.
How do I get this to work?
    thanks.

When I open them in Quicktime 7 or 10 it says additional software required and it comes up black but with sound. Mpeg streamclip it comes up white and with sound. I have tried the vlc player and it does work on that, but I have had problems in the past with converting movies to usable footage so this isn't a solution. I know that this can work as have read lot's of posts hwere it is resolved but none of the solutions work for me. I think maybe it's the type of mpeg-2 component I have.
The format of the footage is MPEG-2 Video, Linear PCM, Timecode.
    thanks.

  • Can anyone help? I have downloaded and installed the QuickTime MPEG-2 Component but it doesn't work.

I purchased the QuickTime MPEG-2 component for Quicktime as I am using Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and I want to be able to via MPEG-2 transport streams.
I paid £14.00 - everything downloaded and installed fine but it doesn't work and I am still unable to view the transport streams in Quicktime even though according to the website this is want the component will let me do.
I have rebooted several times, reinstalled both Quicktime and the MPEG-2 component and still nothing.  I have then spent ages going around and around in circles on the website trying to find a way of emailing customer services or technical support to get some assistance but I just always end back in the same place no further forward.
Please can anyone else offer any suggestions - either how I can get it working or how I can get my £14 back from Apple!!

    1) Suggest you reread the "Feature" details for the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component paying particular attention to the paragraph titled "Can transport streams be played?" which clearly states that this codec does NOT support the playback of transport stream (TS) files.
    2) This codec can only be used with "classic" QT apps such as the QT 7 player, GarageBand, or third-party apps like the free MPEG Streamclip app.
    3) The VLC player intrinsically supports TS files. MPEG Streamclip with the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installed supports TS file playback.
    4) MPEG Streamclip with the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installed can also resave muxed TS file content as muxed program stream (PS) content which is then "playback" compatible with both QT 7 and QT X players (assuming you select an audio compression format compatible with both) or convert the muxed TS content to QT "edit" compatible compression formats if desired.
Please can anyone else offer any suggestions - either how I can get it working or how I can get my £14 back from Apple!!
Apple seldom makes refunds to people who successfully purchase software which they do not really understand how to use—cavaet emptor. It is difficult to make suggestions here without knowing more about your personal preferences and/or work flow requirements. I personally would keep the codec to enhance various playback, conversion, and editing options on my Mac.

  • MPEG-2 component issues

I purchased and installed QT MPEG-2 component into QT Pro 7.2. Some MPEG-2 videos play, some won't open at all ("The movie could not be opened. This file is not a movie file."), and some give audio only.
I note that on the QT MPEG-2 page
    <http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/>
the description says that only files with audio layers I and II are supported (see footnotes), but the ones I'm trying to view are of these types (VideoHub has a great "Info" window to help identify video formats).
As a test I downloaded these MPEG-2 files and tried to open them in QT:
    <http://www.techex.co.uk/vbdown.asp>
(scroll down to "MPEG-2 samples"). Some will open and some won't. These play fine in VLC, but since my goal is to edit my MPEG-2 videos, this isn't a solution for me.
If only certain types of MPEG-2 (eg, only certain bit rates) are supported by Apple's MPEG-2 component, what are these limitations?
    Any suggestions are welcome.
    Thanks

    QT MPEG-2 Component 1.0 (v211)

So I guess the $20 I spent for the MPEG-2 component was wasted. It doesn't allow, reliably, playing of MPEG-2 videos in QT Player. Some do play, but not knowing which will and which won't, doesn't encourage its use for -2 videos.
I didn't know that even if the MPEG-2 component would enable a video to be played that I wouldn't be able to edit in QT P. Quite a failure all around.
A word to the wise: save your bux and download MPEG Streamclip:

is there an MPEG-2 component for Lion?

    Jon Walker wrote:
Doesn't need to be. It just needs to be recognized by and compatible with your version of iMove.
Yes, I'm aware of this. I replied because you mentioned AVCHD, but I misread the “to “muxed MPEG-2” part, my mistake here.
    Jon Walker also wrote:
Not sure what you mean by "shortened" here.
When I open my VOB files with thar Codec, QT usually shows the first seconds/minutes of the file (the controller also thinks the video is of that length). If I “go to end” (e.g. by using Option-Right arrow), I sometimes see the real end, but then moving the “time handler” (sorry, english isn't my native language) to the left, it will eventually jumps to the start half (=true relative time from 0, given the controller's total time) past a given place. No matter how, I can't usually see more than a couple of seconds/minutes from the start.
    Jon Walker followed and wrote:
However, as to never having any audio track, what compressed data is contained in the VOB file? As noted above, AC3 audio is not natively compatible with QT 7 Pro and, since most VOB files contain MPE-3 video multiplexed with AC3 audio, there is little wonder at not being able to play the audio.
Mine seem to be A52 encoded-audio, which turns out to be some kind of AC3. I'll try this codec: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/21875/a52codec
(AC3 isn't recognized, but perhaps its subtypes can).
    Jon Walker lastly wrote:
Either demux the VOB to an MPEG file containing MPEG-2 video multiplexed with MPEG-1 layered audio or demux the VOB to paired M2V and AIFF files. Both options preserve the original video quality but have QT 7 compatible audio. (I prefer the paired elementary stream files as they can also be edited at the frame level in QT 7 Pro (but not iMovie) and do not have the 4 GB file length restriction of the MPEG file container.
In any event, that is why I specifically mentioned the use of MPEG Streamclip above. It can handle the "muxed" AC3 audio which QT 7 natively does not handle and, together with the QT MPEG-2 Playback component, acts as a bridge to make the VOB content fully compatible with QT 7 Pro playback and/or editing without actually re-transcoding the video and thus, preserves its original quality. Plus, if the VOB title set contains multiple files, the data can be merged as part of the demuxing/repackaging process by MPEG Streamclip.
    All good advices, thank you!

  • QT with MPEG-2 component & MPEG Streamclip VOB sound problem

    It's two separate problems:
    1) I can view VOB file but no sound using qt pro 7 with mpeg-2 component downloaded
    2) that same vid opens fine in mpeg streamclip and converts nicely to .mov
BUT mpeg streamclip only sees the vts011.vob file
how do i process the _2.vob file? also the _3.vob file?
i do want 3 separate .mov files so I can upload to BlipTV.
the first .mov file was 860MB converting from the _1.vob file.
    many thanks

It's two separate problems:.. 1) I can view VOB file but no sound using qt pro 7 with mpeg-2 component downloaded... 2) that same vid opens fine in mpeg streamclip and converts nicely to .mov
Everything is working correctly. The QT MPEG-2 Playback Component, as stated on the Apple web site, is a "video" component. It allows you to play the "video" portion of MPEG-2 "program" streams such as found in "muxed" MPEG, MPG, or VOB wrappers, as well as, elementary M2V and MOV files. Whether or not the audio is compatible depends on the audio compression format used. For instance, a "muxed" MPEG file containing MPEG2/MP2 data would play both video and audio because the MP2 (MPEG 1, layer 2) audio is natively supported by QT while a VOB file containing MPEG2/AC3 data would only play the video because the AC3 audio format is not natively supported by QT. On the other hand, the same file will play both the audio and video in MPEG Streamclip because MPEG Streamclip has built-in AC3 support. Further, MPEG Streamclip has the ability to "fix" timecode breaks frequently present in VOB program streams and can bridge the gap between content consiting of blocks of audio and video data interspesed in an single, spatially synchronized data stream without an extertal timing reference to multiple track streams of audio and video data which are, more or less, in an "averaged" synchronization at the frame level in terms of an external time reference. I.e., MPEG Streamclip provides a bridge between one form of multimedia technology and another. Contrary to the popular opinion held by many novice users here, "not all video technology is created equal."
BUT mpeg streamclip only sees the vts011.vob file... how do i process the _2.vob file? also the _3.vob file?
VOB files are simply file containers which are limited in size to approximatly 1 GB each for DVD use. A single VOB may contain multiple "TITLES" (representing independent movies) or multiple VOBs may constitute a single "TITLE" (representing an single movie). If you load (import or drop) a single VOB into the processing window, then MPEG Streamclip will process the individual VOB file independently. If you load (import or drop) multiple VOBs into the processing window, it will process all of the files as a single file. In addition, if the single or multiple VOB file(s) contain multiple TITLES, you can set "in" and "out" points to re-save and/or process the contained TITLE(s) as independent movies. In short, you should probably read the MPEG Streamclip Help file to better understand all you can do with this very powereful (but free) application.

  • Stuttering Playback With MPEG-2 Component

I recently installed the Quicktime MPEG-2 component for Windows. I'm trying to play muxed MPEG-2 files that are encoded at 6MB/s (DVD quality). The video stutters at the beginning of the clip and also if I pause and then resume playing. The same file plays smoothly in Quicktime on a Mac with the MPEG-2 Component. The PC I'm using has 1GB of Ram, an excellent video card and processor, so it's not a speed issue. The MPEG-2 file will play fine in Windows Media on the PC, but I need to use Quicktime.

I'm in the same boat, except i'm not getting any audio with my stuttering-at-the-beginning video. my mpeg2 in question works with all my other media players (and on DVD), but i need to make it work with quicktime 7 so that i can utilize the mp4 converter. sorry i've got no solution to this problem.

  • Mpeg-2 Component for Windows

okay, so i bought the mpeg-2 component for windows, so i could use .TS and M2TS files, and it hasn't really done anything, i have installed it, it wont open mpeg-2 in quick time, so does anyone have any solutions?

It also allows transcoding of MPEG-2 content when used with software like the free MPEG Streamclip app.
Many new camcorders now record directly to DVD using the MPEG-2 format. If you need to get these "home movies" into a DV editing app like iMovie or Final Cut or even Windows Movie Maker you'll need the component to convert the DVD contents back in the DV Stream format.
