7.2-10-15k

Can someone tell me why 10-15k drives aren't very popular. Why isn't there a merge from the slow 7200 to the 10-15k, is there a problem with the fast rpm drives? Thanks
Power G5 Dual 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I'm not sure about "not popular", but in my experience, right now they have a very specific, useful role: they are excellent small, fast boot drives. Splitting your system into the operating system and applications on a fast drive, and your data on another drive, is a great way to optimise the speed of your G5.
The 10/15K-rpm drives don't reach the same sizes as their slower cousins, so they aren't really suited for expandable storage media.
There have been reports that the 150GB Raptor has issues transferring very large files in a G5 system (search on the forums to find them), but the 72GB Raptor has been very good to me so far.

Hello (hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue)
I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
    could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY  from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?
thanks for your help in advanced.

hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar  problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
    (nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this?  bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"

  • Add board to a Sunfire 15K domain

    Hi,
I have SunFire 15K with a number of domains. I have got a systemboard already physically exists in the cassis and now I need to add it to server. The showboards command shows the board in this status.
SB16 Off CPU Available Unknown Isolated
CI would like to add this to domain B. Could someone tell me the command sequence I need to use and any other suggestions please.
    TIA
    Shahul

    That may+ work...
... depending on OS, patch level of that OS, firmware level of the system, firmware level of that available board, and a boatload of other presumed conditions.
    So ...
    Not so easy.
The point I was trying to pass to the original poster is whether they should entrust all that investment they have to some anonymous advice in an Internet discussion forum.
Should something untoward occur afterward, what recourse would they have?
    To a forum contributor? None.
To the contractually obligated support agreement they have with their Sun service contract? There is tons of responsibility that the advice from a techsupport engineer must be accurate.
    Ultimately it's their choice.
They are the ones that posted to the forum to begin with.
If I were in their place it would have never occurred to me to seek such advice for such a computer system.
Alas, we may never know what happens.
They are likely to never return and describe the results.
It's what I think of as a "drive-by-posting". They throw it out while driving by the forum and disappear into the horizon.
(they also posted the same question to the SMC forum, on the same original day, and never returned to that forum either)

    welcome to the forum!
"aren't supported" means that the particular drive in question hasn't been tested and qualified on thinkserver systems and won't be covered by support calls that directly relate to issues originating from the use of non-lenovo drives.
however, i'm sure they'll work fine.   all SAS drives are intended for RAID use.   and, old drives have a better chance of working on new controllers than new drives on old controllers.   that's typically where you run into conflicts (and typically in the controller firmware, not the drive).

  • K9A2 Platinum/ problems adding 15k SAS to existing 15k SAS with Vista64 OS

This is my first build. I am trying to add a Fujitsu 15k SAS max3147rc to the existing max3147rc which has the Vista64 on it. Both disk are currently setup in the array under LD1 and LD2. This is the only way I was able to see the 2nd HD without formatting the existing HD which has the Vista 64 on it. Both show up in the arrray as Promise 1+0 Stripe/RAID0. The mode is 1+0 and raid is 0 for both drives.
Only the HD with Vista 64 shows up under my computer. Both drives show up under Disk Management. The one with OS is listed as NTFS and the other is listed as unallocatedand only has the option to make it a New Simply Volume.
Shouldn't both of these drives be on LD1 in raid0 for the fastest speed? How can it be done without formatting the drive with Vista 64 on it
Also, here is a link to a diagram of the SAS cable pinout.

Bandwidth is useless when latency kicks in.
As IDE drives have a typical latency of 8~10 ms where SAS has 3~4 ms, there is no way IDE will pass SCSI bandwidth or not.
Except when you use 1 task, but a modern PC doesn't do that.
As for money on a decent RAID-controller, IDE (SATA) will not beat SCSI (SAS), no way on earth.
For click-open only access-time matters, bandwidth is second.
For AVI decoding/encoding bandwidth matters, as you have large continues files.
In my test you need to do more then 1 thing, as is common practice today, I used large files (you could use small) as they show you the difference enormously.
Try it and find out, most people that are not used to SCSI drives believe IDE can beat it.....sorry but it's not the case.
Raptors are old poor performing drives when it comes to SCSI, and the controller won't help you....try a real SCSI (SAS) Raid, it will blow you from your feet
Test under linux, gimme the results of your drives in seconds:
    Code: [Select]
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/export/out.dat bs=1M count=1024
Afer every test, delete the out.dat, show the result screen, then I will show the one for the forum, that has 2 SCSI drives in software-raid1
On a very old machine the result could be this:
    Quote
    1024+0 records in
    1024+0 records out
    1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 332.856 seconds, 3.2 MB/s

Wow!!! Can’t believe it. I was just approved for 15k LOC with Navy. In March, I was denied for the cash rewards credit card and LOC. So I decided to work on a few things and improve my scores. Last Thursday, I applied for the cash rewards credit and was denied 3 days later. I was successful with a secured message recon and was approved for 5k. I was going to hold off until December to apply for the LOC due to the initial denial, but this morning I said to myself --It is only a HPJ I applied and requested for 15k!!!!!! I was trying to be a good girl and hold off until my AR review and hopeful increase on my card... but you have be extra excited LOL!For the Navcheck, they pulled EQ. Although they pulled EQ and TU for the cash rewards credit card. Best of luck

  • Which SAS 15k rpm internal audio hard disk for new MacPro running Logic Pro

For my new Logic MacPro machine, I'm planning to have a 7200 rpm drive for programs and a 300gb 15k rpm drive for audio.
Are there any other drives out there that I could buy which are as good (and quite) as the £510 one that Apple supply, but for a little less cash?
    Cheers

Save your money on the 15k drive.. You won't need it. The SATA drives are plenty fast enough, unless you are wanting to stream HD vision along with your session, in which case another drive in one of the spare SATA bays will kick along just fine.

  • Upgrading UltraSparc III processor board to UltraSparc IV on 15K

Can the UltraSparc III processor boards on a 15K server be swapped out and upgraded to the UltraSparc IV processor boards?
Also, can MIXED processor boards be used on the 15K? In other words, can I use both UltraSparc III and IV boards on a 15k? If so what are the parameters? Are separate domains necessary for each processor type?
    Thank you!
    Terry

I had a question like this from a 12k customer and I provided the info from the public handbook:
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFire15K/comp onents.html#SystemBoard
Mixing of US III, US IV and US IV+ is supported, but there is no information external to Sun, furthermore we recommended that the customer contact Sun directly, from what I understand upgrade work on these systems is to be carried out by Sun FE only ( like Bill! ). As Bill suggested use your support contract to confirm upgrade options for your system.

Looking for some insight on the installation of the domain agents and monitoriing for SMC on the 12K and 15K domains.
Each attempt at installation results in just the non-English locale message files being installed for the monitoring agent and no DR agent installaion. It appears that es-inst does not find the correct information on system type.
We are using SunMC 3.5, update 1.
    Thanks!

Are you sure your system is correctly patched? We had similar problems on a SF15k. Especially the DR pack was never recognized to be installable. The problem was that a string compare failed (15000 <-> 15K). Be sure youve download the latest version for the 12/15k! If I remeber it correctly, it should be version 4.

  • S20 15K SAS Drive noise

    Hi,
    I have purchased the following:
    Lenovo ThinkStation S20 Xeon W3550 Quad-Core Processor (3.06GHz 1066MHz 8MB) 4gb (2 x 2gb) udimm ddr3 1333MHz, 300GB SAS (15k) with SAS Controller Card NVIDIA Quadro 2000
This is a brand new system and its really noisy the case itself is fine, all the noise comes from the SAS drive. I've used other SAS drives before and there quiet like a normal HDD is the SAS drive broken or is it meant to sound like there is a little jack hammer inside the case everytime the drive reads or writes?
The performance seems fine, the drive has the following part number: Hitachi HUS156030VLS60 SAS 15KRpm 6Gb/s 3.5"

jdeb - my current setup is a 160GB intel 320-series SSD for OS, swap space, and scratch disk.   for data storage i use two 1TB WD10JPVT 2.5" notebook drives in RAID 1.   i have a third WD10JPVT inside for daily backups.   then, i have an external thinkpad eSATA+USB secure HDD enclosure with a fourth WD10JPVT inside.
i use windows server 2008 R2 SP1 enterprise edition as my OS.   backup is handled via windows server backup performed twice daily using a custom shell script triggered by the task scheduler.   backups run at noon and 6pm, imaging both the SSD and 1TB data array.   the only drive at risk is the SSD since it's not in RAID 1 with another unit.   i've been waiting for intel to introduce an RST driver capable of handling RAID+TRIM.   currently there are two 6-hour windows where the drive could fail and recent data might not be backed up.   otherwise i have multiple images for recovery.
the SSD is silent and the WD10JPVT drives idle at 22db with 25db seek acoustics and minuscule heat output.   you can hear the drives when they seek but it's very subtle.   otherwise the C20 is imperceptible in my environment.
for a personal workstation deployment i'm done with noisy SAS drives.   at slightly more than 100MB/sec sequential transfer speeds, the WD10JPVT drives are great.   any files needed more quickly can go on an SSD if the need arises.

  • Satellite A300-15K: Polish character does not appear using shortcut key

    Hi,
I am a fresh user of A300-15K and from the start I have discovered that it has combination of Alt+Ctr+C assigned to starting up ATI software (Catalyst Control Centre). Unfortunatelly this combination normally should produce Polish character "?" ( it doesn't look properly on this page somehow after I have copied it from Word - it is "c" with stong accent over it - here is its capital version "?").
I entered Catalyst Control Centre and unmarked the use of so called HotKeys (first this particular hotkey and then the use of hotkeys generally), but all I achieved was that Catalyst Control Centre stopped starting up after the combination usage.
However, the needed Polish character did not appear. I can get its capital version with Alt+Ctr+Shift+c, but no normal version.
A guy from service centre advised me to assign a different letter as startup combination for Catalyst Control Centre and I did, but it still did not make the Polish character appear.
I guess there must be a fault in regional settings so I tried to change them to English and back to Polish with zero result.
Please help with some word of advise.
    Message was edited by: Koster62

    Its easy to turn off.
Just enter the catalyst driver and there must be option like 'shortcut'. Turn it off.
    I had the same problem.
I remember only it was really easy to turn off.
You shouldn't have problem with that.
