7.2 Intel --- 7.1 PPC Compatibility

Ok so I remember reading in one of the recent upgrades about the compatibility moving from intel to PPC machines being improved. But at the moment I'm trying to get an album created in 7.2 on an intel macbook to be opened up by a mixer who's using 7.1 on a G5. What steps will we have to take to get this to work. Of course there's the option of him upgrading to 7.2, but will that fix it?
I don't have my macbook here as it's being repaired, but when I get it back is there a way I could save the sessions as 7.1 files to regain compatibility?
Thanks all!!!!

provided you don't have any new features required of the logic song, the 7.2 song will open fine in 7.1.
in general it is not advisable to use files created in one version in another because the files have become so much more complex. in practise though, it is generally fine (99% of the time).
i recently had to do a recording using my logic file created in 7.2.1 on a different machine with 6.3.1 and OS 9.2!! it was running DAE, and everything was fine apart from an error message when opening the file. there were no crashes or glitches at all. never-the-less its not how i would prefer to do it.

  • Bootable clones for both iMac (Intel) and G5 (PPC) on same external drive??

Is it possible to format and partition one external firewire drive to accept a bootable clone of my iMac (Intel) on one partition and my G5 (PPC) on the other? I seem to remember that in order to be able to boot, the Intel and the PPC require something different in formatting on the drive.
If this is not possible, could I as a second choice format/partition an external firewire drive to place a bootable clone of the G5 on one partition and a Time Machine backup of the iMac on the other? I am looking for a way to store just one rather than two drives in my safety deposit box. Thanks

I put up instructions and a picture showing how to select the partition scheme:

Scroll down to about the middle of the page.
Frankly I was surprised to find out you can boot an Intel machine from a drive that is APM rather than GUID. I'm not sure that what you want to do is going to be as easy as one would hope. Anyway, the instructions I found for dual booting off a firewire drive sounded a bit complex!

  • Connecting to Exchange works with Intel, but not PPC machines????

I work in an office with several Macs, Intel and PPC. Using Mail.app, we can connect fine to our exchange server with the Intel boxes, but the PPC machines have problems. Connection Doctor actually shows that you are connected, but you don't see anything in the Mail.app UI. The mailbox is grayed out. And if you try sending a message out anyway, it does go out and can be viewed via Web Access. The Mail.app configuration is identical, so the only differences I see are Intel vs. PPC and the version of Mail on Intel is slightly newer. Intel has Mail 2.1.1 (252.3) whereas the PPC machines have Mail 2.1 (252/252.2). All machines run 10.4.8.
    Any thoughts?

Hey man I figured it out. If you have too many emails in your inbox its causing the server to timeout or something.
The solution is to move all the emails from your inbox to a temporary folder. Then move back only what you need. Within five minutes push was working for me again and my battery problem went away because it wasn't constantly trying to pull down email.

  • Installation problems on Intel Mac. claims PPC

I'm trying to install the current Flash Player 10.2 on my Macbook 6,1 (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.26GHz) with 4GB RAM, running OSX 10.6.6
    Browser is Firefox 3.6.13 {Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6.13}
I got the installer from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
The installer puts up a message: "Devices with PowerPC processors are no longer supported"
How can I convince the installer that this isn't a PPC machine ?  Why might the installer think so ?

Hi, What browser are you using to try to Uninstall/Install FP vs 10.2? And when you Install 10.1, what browser are you using?
There is no Flash Player support for a 64bit browser. I have been very busy on the Forum and have not had time to check on the 10.3 beta. Not sure what it refers to. Have you? Just asking as I've seen it mentioned on another thread, but it's from those complaining about 10.2 not working. Why anyone would want a beta Installed unless they are involved in the testing and are Developers I don't know.
Any beta is a work in progress, so as long as a user is aware of that it's ok with me. Microsoft has their IE9 in beta too, but with an beta one can expect problems.
Since the 10.2 is not Installing, then I don't think you'd receive any code, do you?
I'm not as familiar with the Mac, but is it possible to upgrade the OS from a PPC to the edition you have now?
I'm going to check a couple of things while you let me know on the above browser info. Also any comments would be welcome:-)
    Thanks,

  • Can both an intel and a PPC mac use time machine on the same TC?

I just got a TC and have successfully used time machine with a MBP. I was about to install Leopard on my PPC eMac in order to use time machine on the TC but I wondered if they could both use the TC hard drive as it is currently formatted.
As I recall, intel macs use journaled GUID and PPC machines use another format.
    Am I deluded?

I don't think there is a problem, and I believe others have reported in these forums that they're doing it.
There is a lot of confusion in this area compounded by a number of people who say that some of the Apple KB articles are wrong/misleading.
But in this case it's more a case of it doesn't matter - here is why.....
The Time Capsule disk comes formatted, you can erase the disk via the Airport Utility. That's the closest you can come to formatting and you don't have options - so it does whatever it needs to do to get it right.
The machines being backed up don't access the Time Capsule's disk(s) directly as they do on a locally attached disk. They do it via AFP network disk protocol and the Time Capsule disk is in effect insulated from the machine being backed up.
(As an aside, it's because of this - the differences in what can be done over AFP - that the Time Capsule stores the backups in a different file format)
If you add a USB attached drive to the Time Capsule you can also erase it with the Airport Utility as above. In my case, I've attached a USB drive to my Time Capsule. I never had the Time Capsule erase it, but before attaching it I attached it locally and formatted it GUID and HFSJ and it work just fine when attached to the Time Capsule. Does it have to be formatted that way - I don't know - all I know is in this one case what I did works which doesn't prove it has to be that way.

  • BIG: differences between intel-safari and PPC-safari...

I just want to say and discuss this phenomenon because I was unable to find anything about this. I do a bit of web development and I can say that Safari on power-pc machines handles CSS differently than Safari with Intel based Macs .
The bottom line is that there is a lot of website that look a bit screwed within PPC-Safari! And I am not sure that the people producing these websites are aware of that.
Did anyone notice that and does anyone know what causes such trouble? I wish these bugs would disappear.
    Please Apple clean your mess!
PS: If someone is interested I could post pictures.

PS: If someone is interested I could post pictures.
I think links might be helpful as well. Those of us with PPS Macs and Intel Macs can then look to see if we also see what you're seeing.
Two questions come to mind. Are you comparing on only one PPC Mac and one Intel Mac, or is this something you've seen on multiple Mac of both types? And are you using the same version of Safari on both types of Mac?

  • CS4 Master suite; can I install non intel applications on PPC G5?

Hi, I would like to install the CS4 Master suite on both my Intel G5, but also, if possible, Photoshop and Indesign onto my old PPC G5 too. I know the Master suite is specified as Intel only, but does anyone know if it is still possible to install the UB applications it contains?
    Thanks in advance!

    Andy,
    >To my horror, I read on the box it only works on Intel machines. Would have been helpful if Adobe had made it clear on main page of web site.
If you spend that kind of money for anything, you simply do your due diligence
    before purchasing. And Adobe
does have a clear link to system requirements for each app on its pages.
For the Master Collection, on the main page: http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/mastercollection the link is near the top of the white panel on the right. That link takes you to: http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/mastercollection/systemreqs where the very first bullet-point is "Multicore Intel® processor"
And the specs do not say, "Also runs on PowerPC G5 computers" because some of the included apps don't. The minimum system requirements to run
all included apps includes the multicore Intel Mac.

  • Install Intel Leopard on PPC Tiger iMac?

My G5 iMac PPC hard drive needs to be replaced. It came with Tiger. I have the Leopard Install Disc that came with my other new Intel iMac. Can I install that Leopard onto the new internal hard drive on my PPC iMac?

This is not strictly true. Here is my earlier post on the matter:
I don't know much about the various Apple license agreements but I suspect these matters may not be as black and white as some appear to believe.
It is certainly the case that Apple require normal single licenses to be transferred with all associated media but this may not be completely enforceable in all jurisdictions.
It would be wrong to assume that possession of a DVD etc is any indication of license ownership or the right to use it. For example Apple state that AMP agreements revoke the earlier license but they don't recover the old DVDs. My understanding is that educational software can be transferred and used legally by other educational users so here again possession of the DVD may not confer the right to use it, ie the person with the DVD may not be associated with education - what happens at the end of a student's course?
I am not sure if any of the volume licensing agreements permit licenses to be transferred. A quick investigation indicated that they are probably not transferable although this did not appear to be so clear for school licenses. Those unfamiliar with volume licenses may not be aware that the media and license are separate, eg a 1,000 seat license is supplied with only one media set although further media can be purchased at a nominal price.
Whatever the strict terms of their licenses eventually large concerns often sell their old computers with at least a working, although perhaps old, OS.
In my volume licensing world I do not assume that:
1 - possession of a DVD implies any right to use it
2 - the lack of a DVD implies software is unlicensed.
As long as we don't intend to promote or commit an illegal act I can see little reason to be too concerned with whether other contributors possess a particular DVD.

  • Put intel chip into PPC mini?

Is it possible to put a Intel chip into my PPC mini? I got my Mac mini in late Jan, and really want to get the new Intel Mac...

Nope not at all, your dealing with apples and oranges - sorry couldn't resist the pun
Seriously the cpu is one small piece of a computer. You have the chipset, and controllers that direct the communication between the components and subsystem. There's the firmware, the software to interact with the hardware.
Then there's the physical placement of the cpu, is it soldered onto the motherboard, if not are the pin assignments the same between the ppc and intel cpu? I doubt it.
As you can see there's many hurdles to jump. Your best bet is to by a core solo they're cheap enough (relativly speaking) or sell your current mini and get a core duo or an iMac
    Regards
    Mike

  • Uh, is my G4 MDD-model an intel, or a PPC??

Yes, that may seem like an incredibly naive question, but I'm trying to download a program (the Photoshop-like app Gimp), and the website is asking me if my Tiger-running computer is Intel, or PPC. How can I tell?? Thanks.
    http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Download.html

It's a PPC. No Mac model that includes G3, G4, G5, or Power in the name is an Intel Mac.

  • Bootable Drive - GUID and PPC Compatibility?

    Hi,
I'm planning to make a bootable clone of my Macintel onto an external USB drive. I want to make two partitions: one for the clone, another for extra storage. If I format the disk as GUID, will it be readable/bootable from a PPC Mac? Or will I just have to use APM instead? As an aside, I was also wondering if a 12" Powerbook G4 (867mhz) had a compatible USB connection for my Seagate drive. Any help would be appreciated.
    Many thanks.

It will be readable on a PPC Mac but you will not be able to boot a PPC Mac. If you want to be able to boot both then you must partition the drive using the APM partition scheme and then clone each version of the OS X to their respective partitions.
You can boot an Intel Mac from an APM partitioned drive, but you cannot directly install OS X using the Intel OS X Installer Disc.

  • Intel to Quicksilver PPC

Hello, my friend is buying a new iMac for his workstation, and he is going to give me his old model to keep. Upon closer inspection it was a PowerPC and ran tiger (10.4.11). That can't run half of the applications i need for work. On the other hand, I have a rotten 2005 Mac mini that has an intel core 2 duo that I could salvage for parts. Any idea on how to port the chip into the PPC?

Part of the mystery in actual identification of your computer and the OS X it should run or could, is based in a mis-identification of that as a 2005 build year model...
See some Mini Mac models-series information here:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/index-macmini.html
For it to have a Core2Duo it would be a mid-2007 machine and in line with the usual lag of product in the online Apple special deals refurbished store; that is usually 1 to 2 years behind new at the most. Many are of the same year or the immediate prior model, in past instances when I bought from their refurbished store online.
Another resource to confirm specs and build model year, is to find the product serial number, even the remanufacture serial number that is on Apple refurbs that is different than it was when new, and enter that into an online 'indentify by serial number' site, such as one of three I have bookmarked. Identify almost any Apple Mac product by SN. Even my old refurbished G4 laptop from mid-2005, and my G4 late 2005 Mini...
    In example: http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
The other resource it to get and use the MacTracker free application, to help compare standard specs and upgrade specs, build model years in some detail, best after you identify the unit serial number. Product identification can tell you of product changes, kind/type of supported RAM, ceilings on OS X version, etc.
    {Likely you do not have a 2005 core2duo Mini. There were none manufactured that year. I have a first-model MacBook 13" coreduo from 2006, and the Mini in 2006 had a coreSolo and a coreduo; not core2duo. It would make sense that you actually have a 2007 Mini, if bought from Apple special deals online.}
The total RAM that unit may take could be higher than you find under an incorrect build year spec. Seems likely since the 2005 did not ship with OS X 10.5.x Leopard, and the Tiger 10.4 was included in mid to late 2005/early 2006. Some even had a 'Drop In Upgrade DVD to Leopard' in their box, when new; I have one from 2007. The Early-2006 Mini may have shipped with Tiger in the included install restore disc in the box, Mid/Late-2006 had Leopard included.

  • V10.3 says "can't install" because my Intel Mac is "PPC"

Something is really wacky. I DL'd the 10.3 Flash Player installer on my friend's Intel iMac (and, yes, it's a 27" Core2Duo 2009 model running 10.6.8). When I attempt to install it, the installer complains that I need the PPC version and won't install. It directs me to a link where I can DL the PPC installer which, of course, won't work on an Intel iMac.
    How do I resolve this?

    Jay,
I have the same problem when installing upgrades to existing programs.  I've searched the communities pretty thoroughly and there doesn't seem to be a permanent fix for the problem, but there are two work arounds that seems pretty robust.
First, some folks have reported if when you get the first "info.plist in use" error to clear the error message and simply wait instead of attempting to move the application into the application folder (or the icon in the dmg file for the application folder) again.  I have found personally that waiting about 30 seconds often solves the problem.
The other option is to "manually" open the application folder and throw the older version of the application into the trash and then drag the new version into the applications folder.  Be aware with this strategy that sometimes you will get the same info.plist error message when trying to discard the existing app.  Again, waiting seems to solve the problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I easily upgrade my 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo to the new quad intel i7? any compatibility issues?

Can I easily upgrade my 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo to the new Quad intel i7 processor? any compatibility issues?

Not only can it not be done easily... it can't be done at all.  For starters, the processor is soldered to the logic board and it is not replaceable.  However, even if the processor were removable, the new quad core i7 processor is not compatible with the chipset used in your current system.  The new processors use an entirely new chipset.  The new processors also have an integrated GPU on the processor.  Your current chipset wouldn't have any idea how to deal with that.  Basically... apart from the fact that you just can't remove the processor, there are a significant number of hardware incompatibilites between the new processors and the logic board in your current machine.

  • Don't know if I'm "intel" iMac or "ppc" iMac?

Whats the easiest way to tell which one I am?

If you have a G3, G4 or G5 imac you have a PPC or Power PC mac.
Anything newer than 2006 is an intel mac.
Easiest way to tell though is to click the apple icon in the upper left hand corner of your menu bar and hit "about this mac"
That will say if you have a PPC or Intel Mac.
